• What's static.ak.fbcdn.net that appears on the status bar of my browser everytime Facebook is loading?

  I find the message: "waiting for static.ak.fbcdn.net..." on the status bar of my browser everytime I load Facebook and many a times even while loading other websites. I searched on net and found out that static.ak.fbcdn.net stands for static akamai facebook content delivery network. I reckon that static.ak.fbcdn.net is the server URL from where Facebook delivers contents to our browser. Am I right? Can anyone elaborate? Also, why does the above mentioned message appear while loading other websites too?

• Apache freezing, How to detect which virtual host is getting hit?

  I have a production server that in the last 24 hours has been hard rebooted 4 times due to freezes. Ping is fine but all other services time-out (Apache, SSHd, etc). I have now diagnosed it to Apache running out of memory due to an exorbitant amount of child processes forking suddenly within seconds of starting Apache. Stopping Apache just after rebooting keeps the server stable again. My two questions are: Is there a way to detect which of the vhosts is being suddenly hammered without looking into each vhost's access log one by one? Is there a way to quickly enable/disable vhosts without commenting (#) them all out in httpd.conf?

• Is there a way to get att.net email to stay connected?

  My att.net account at home (wireless connection) has been bad for the last several days: I have to hit F5 quite a few times to "unfreeze" it (I can read an email or two, then it freezes, etc.). At work (company LAN) it's even worse: I can connect to the site and see that I have email, but can't open any of the emails - and the screen constantly refreshes (every couple of seconds) with a "Connecting..." message. It apparently connects and disconnects over and over again, but never stays connected long enough to actually access the email. Is there a way either to fix this OR forward my att.net (from home) to my work email address (accessible via MS Outlook)? Or set it up from work using Outlook to pull in my att.net email? I have Outlook 2003 at work.

• Intel Rapid Start Driver Reinstallation doesn't work?

  I recently had to reformat my entire drive and reinstall Windows 7. Something that bothers me is that when I was downloading the Intel Rapid Start driver (I have a Lenovo Ideapad Y480, and it comes standard with the Rapid Start) and tried to install it, the installer claimed that my system did not meet the requirements in order to install, when it was previously installed by the OEM. My startup times have increased from 21 seconds to log-in screen to 50 seconds. Please help... Specs: Lenovo Ideapad Y480 Intel Core i7-3610 Ivy Bridge (quad-core) Nvidia Geforce 640M LE with 2gb VRAM 8GB RAM 1TB hard drive, 32 GB SSD (OEM installed)

• What is the minimum delay between two consecutive RS232 frames?

  I have been working on creating a UART on an FPGA. I can successfully transmit and receive single characters typed on PuTTY. However, when I set my FPGA to constantly write a large sequences of "A", sometimes I end up with a sequences of "@" or some other characters until I reset the FPGA a few times. I believe the UART on the computer looses track of the difference between the start bit and a zero. The delay between the two "A" is ~ 30us (measured with a logic analyzer) and the baud rate is 115200 8N1. Is there a minimum delay that must be maintained between two consecutive RS232 frames?

• How Can I Set the OS X Dock to Show Instantly Instead of Waiting Half a Second in Snow Leopard?

  Having a MacBook Pro 13" I find myself trying to maximize the screen real estate constantly which have led me to put the dock at the right hand corner of the screen. Now in an attempt to save a few more pixels I decided to give autohiding of the dock a go and ran into a problem that have plagued me all night... When you toggle the switch to automatically hide the dock you get stuck with a small delay before it appears when hovering the edge of the screen. I have learnt that this is one of the many design principles Apple have put in use. In this case it appears to be their mission to save me from seeing the dock those few times when it's not intentional to touch the screens edge. In Windows there was a way to tweak this setting to have the menubar appear instantly by altering some registry value. Is there some way I can do this in Mac OS X?

• How does pptpd (poptop) or pppd work with eap-tls and mppe-128?

  To create a VPN I've installed pptpd on an Ubuntu domU (Debian domUs can also be created). MSCHAPv2 isn't a very strong authentication protocol so I'd like to use EAP-TLS. I've set up a FreeRADIUS server and certificates for EAP-TLS before (for use with WPA), and I've also set up a pptp server with mschap-v2 auth, but I can't figure out how to combine the two. Maybe pppd can use EAP-TLS on its own, but I can't find support for it in the Ubuntu package. If I need to patch the package, that's fine, I know how to patch Debian packages (provided the patch applies cleanly). Also, can MPPE still be used when pppd is configured to use EAP? Because it says in the manual several times that MPPE requires MSCHAP. However, other docs like this one: http://www.nikhef.nl/~janjust/ppp/ seem to refute that. The clients are running Mac OS X Leopard and GNU/Linux, there's no need to fix anything for Windows.

• Excel chart won't update, based on calculated cells

  I have an Excel document (2007) with a chart (Clustered Column) that gets its Data Series from cells containing calculated values The calculated values never change directly, but only as a result of other cells in the sheet changing When I change other cells in the sheet, the Data Series cells are recalculated, and show new values - but the Chart based on this Data Series refuses to update automatically I can get the Chart to update by saving/closing, or toggling one of the settings (such as reversing x/y axis and then putting it back), or by re-selecting the Data Series Every solution I have found online doesn't work - I have Calculation set to automatic - Ctrl+Alt+F9 updates everything fine, EXCEPT the chart - I have recreated the chart several times, and on different computers - I have tried VBA scripts like: Application.Calculate Application.CalculateFull Application.CalculateFullRebuild ActiveWorkbook.RefreshAll DoEvents None of these update or refresh the chart I do notice that if I type over my Data Series, actual numbers instead of calculations, it will update the chart - it's as if Excel doesn't want to recognize changes in the calculations Has anyone experienced this before or know what I might do to fix the problem? • Does the upload file INPUT HTML element give any personal information away?

  I'm wondering what personal information the file input (<input type="file">) element gives the website. I noticed that it does show the file name and the website does seem to have access to it. What about the file's path? If the file is located in My Documents, they could find out the user name via the path (e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\Bob\My Documents) which many times is the actual user's name that is using the website. What information do most modern browsers allow the website to access when a user uses the file input element? Could JavaScript somehow be used to gain more information? What about when plugins (such as Flash or Java) implement file uploading?

• Unable to set NTFS permissions for ApplicationPoolIdentity on Windows 2008 SP2

  On Windows 2008 R2 I am able to set NTFS permissions for an application pool's synthesised ApplicationPoolIdentity account thus: ICACLS d:\websites\site1\www /grant "IIS AppPool\site1":(CI)(OI)(M) The website's application pool is named site1 and is configured to run as ApplicationPoolIdentity. The site's authentication is also configured to authenticate as ApplicationPoolIdentity. I've done this a thousand times on Windows 2008 Standard Edition R2 with never a hitch. However if I try to do the same in Windows 2008 Standard Edition SP2 I get the error: IIS AppPool\site1: No mapping between account names and security IDs was done. Successfully processed 0 files; Failed processing 1 files I also notice that this fails if I try to set permissions for the application pool identity via the security GUI as well. I've seen this before and a reboot has cleared this issue but I'd like to know why this happens periodically. Googling around suggests other folks have hit this problem but there's never a satisfactory explanation. Why would this be?

• Accidentally ejected my Verbatim drive and can't get the icon back

  Hi, I have time machine running on my iMac OSX v10.5.8 and also have a Verbatim 1TB attached that I use as a workspace/scratchdisk so I can manipulate large music files before I transfer them. However, when cleaning behind my computer the other day I think I dislodged the connection (or maybe one of the kids hit the eject button, i don't know) however, I've re-booted many times and it's not reconnected. It doesn't appear in my disc utility windown and I don't know how to get the icon back! I've looked in time machine but it doesn't appear there at all (cos it's not supposed to I think - it's not connected - my mate hooked it up for me and he won't return my calls!). Help. I don't know how to get it back! Sorry for being a plank.

• unable to install mysql completely on debian 5.0

  hi, its been a couple of days that I'm trying to install mysql on my vps which has debian 5.0 with 256mb ram. I've installed webmin also. here is the symptoms : after installing mysql using either webmin or apt-get I am trying to connect to mysql for changing root password but every time I cope with this error : ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES) so I start to investigate and I understand there is no root user inside mysql database when I use : UPDATE user SET password=PASSWORD('newpassword') WHERE user="root"; it says 0 row affected I reinstall mysql for several times but the same problem still exits. please help me how can I install mysql-server as well as mysql-client correctly. regards.

• Apps not starting on Mac OS X Lion

  I have a strange problem, some apps that I download do not launch. There are 2 scenarios The application starts but keeps bouncing, once I click the bouncing icon in the tray it disappears. The process also closes in activity monitor The application fails to start, how ever many times I launch it, it refuses. • Mouse(s) double clicks instead of single click (its not the mouse)

  I am aware of this very similar question: But I have tried with 3 different mouses and everyone of them exibit the same behavior. Simple enough, 1 out of 3 times I get a double click when single clicking). I searched the net a lot about this problem and have yet to find a solution. I have tried: 1- switch to another mouse 2- uninstall the mouse drivers + reboot 3- I do not have any special mouse drivers/software like intellisense and logitecs to uninstall. 4- verified that I was not in fact on some setting that says open files with single click. 5- everything is up to date including a antivirus 6- Installed fresh drivers from dell's website It is a dell vostro 260 computer running windows 7 pro 64. edit: added a 6th thing I tried. edit2: tried reinstalling every windows update I could find nothing Boss just said he'd buy me a logitech mouse hoping the drivers will fix my problems. • Terrible Performance with SATA Drives on Dell PowerEdge, steps to troubleshoot?

  I had asked this question earlier and the question went missing so here it is again. Bought a DELL Poweredge 2950 to use as in-house QA Server. Disk performance is beyond terrible, 1000-4000 ms response time on the drive with our SQL Server database .mdf. Sql Server disk queue upwards of 300 at times. I'm a software guy, can anyone help me with steps to determine the issue? I don't know what RAID controller it has, how can I determine that? I'm speculating it could be BIOS issue. Perhaps the server used to have another kind of drive in it and when I added SATA the ??? buffer size is wrong??? Perhaps I chose wrong options (chose defaults) when setting up the RAID 1 arrays? I thought RAID 1 was a performance array?

• How can I read a reel-to-reel tape from the 1970s?

  A close friend of my mother worked at DEC in the 1970s and 1980s. She recently passed away, and in sorting through her estate, my mother discovered some reel-to-reel magnetic tape. We are curious about what might be on it. I haven't yet seen a picture of it, but Wikipedia tells me this is most likely DECtape. Is there any chance the data on it is still good? It was not preserved with great care, but as far as we know it has also never been particularly abused. Just left in a box and moved a few times. If the data is still valid, do we need to dig up a PDP or VAX or read it, or is there a more modern option?

  Hi, I'm about to set up a server upon which a friend and I will be hosting web sites, and I'll be using Debian. I've set up a LAMP solution many times just to using for local testing purposes, but never for actual production use. I was wondering what are the best practices are in terms of setting the server up, in reference specifically to accessing the web root directory. A couple of the options I have seen: Set up a single user account on the server for us both to use and use a virtual host to point to the somewhere in the home directory, e.g. /home/webdev/www. Set each of us up a user account, and grant permissions in some way to /var/www (What would be the best way? Set up a new group?) I want to get this right when I first set this up as there won't be any going back for a while once our first site is up and running. Appreciate any guidance in advance.

• How to install a "virtual" network card on a virtual server?

  Hi, We have purchased an unmanaged VPS windows hosting solution from one of the UK based companies. We have Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition. We need to install certain third party applications on that server. Unfortunatelly, one of the applications requires a MAC address to be present at all times - this is their way of making sure that software is not pirated (which it isn't). We have tried installing a virtual loopback network card, but this has brought the server down - i.e. we couldn't connect using remote desktop any longer. At the moment we are limited with what we can try. This is an unmanaged solution, therefore any support including restarts is rather costly. Are you aware of any low-risk solutions? Thank you

• Prevent Windows 7 from installing a "critical" updates that crashes the system

  I am running Windows 7 home premium. Up until yesterday, everything was going just beautifully, until I received a "critical update". As soon as the critical update was installed, the system became extremely unstable and froze up every few minutes requiring me to restart the system several times, with the same results. I used system restore to roll back the * update, and everything went back to normal... except that I keep getting a message telling me to restart the computer so that it can install this "critical update". There is no "don't install that crap on my machine" option. Disabling the updates doesn't change anything, turning off the windows update service doesn't change anything either, and being on Home premium, I have no access to the group policies. Any ideas of what can be done to prevent Windows from installing this update the next time I reboot?

If i connect with other network like reliance data card, those websites are opening, if i connect bsnl the problem will be same again. I called to customer care many times, but no use. • Why is Windows Explorer not responding?

  I am having the seemingy popular problem with Widows Explorer not responding. I have tried the AUTRUNS and turned off everything recommended. I have run SCANNOW 3 times and it comes back clean. When booting in safe mode it appears to work. I read someplace that the problem could be a service program, but can't remember where I read it or how to do it. Something about turning off all service programs and then turning them back on one at a time. The problem is I don't remember what it said to do. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. as an FYI here is my system stats Sorry I can't access that part of control panel right now because windows explore not responding. I have an HPdesk top with a AMD quad core processor 1.8GB 1.5TB sata drives (a 1TB and a 500GB) Nvidia 8400 graphics card a 2mb internet connetion wireless 2 DBD R?W drives. • Set resolution of unattached display in OS X?

  I have an HDTV that I'm hooking up via DVI to HDMI from my Mac mini. In my struggle to eliminate overscan I managed to set the screen resolution to something not supported by the tv. How do I change the resolution without that screen attached? Specifically my tv says it's "720p and 1366 x 768 Resolution". The 720p resolution option in OS X made for a ton of overscan (couldn't see menubar or dock at all). So I tried something x 768 and managed to shoot myself in the foot with an unsupported resolution. I thought it was okay to experiment since a resolution change times out if you don't accept it. Apparently that didn't happen for some reason. I've already deleted the com.apple.windowserver.plist in /Library/Preferences as I saw suggested in other places, with no effect.

• Files slow to save sometimes after Ubuntu upgrade

  I haven't quite been able to track down why this happens sometimes in Ubuntu 10.04 and not other times. I'll go into gedit or OpenOffice.org and try to save files, and, during some sessions, it will take up to 10 seconds to save the file, sometimes causing the program to become unresponsive. But during these same sessions, the files sometimes save instantly. This didn't start happening until after the 10.04 (Lucid) upgrade. I suspect that something is reading all the changes I make, or that there's some other big file action going on, or something like that. I disabled Tracker a while back, before the upgrade, and don't see it under the settings - could it be back under a different name under Lucid? You probably don't already know the answer, but how can I go about finding the cause of this problem?
