• Wireless keeps disabling or stays disconnected (Realtek RTL8191SEvB)

  I have Realtek RTL8191SEvB wireless card on Ubuntu 10.10: $ lspci -v | grep Network 03:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8191SEvB Wireless LAN Controller (rev 10) When I load its driver, according to the Network Manager it sometimes blinks with a list of available networks but it keeps disabling itself or it stays disconnected. So, I can't connect to any wi-fi network (which results in frustration). • How to connect to my own WiFi using Broadcom STA drivers?

  I'm trying hard to switch to Linux from Windows because of my engineering project. Unfortunately, everything is against that change! Before I have installed Broadcom STA proprietary drivers, I was seeing on NetworkManager and nm-applet only local radio-internet-access networks. After I installed Broadcom STA, I see my neighbor's wireless network (channel 11, WEP) Neither before nor after the installation is own wireless network available. Computer: Asus Lamborghini VX6 Ubuntu: 12.04 LTS 64-bit Router: ASUS N55U (A1) with newest AsusWRT firmware Network: Channel 5 (tried also 10 and 11, both on 20 and 40MHz bands), WPA2 Personal, 2,4 + 5 GHz (what is not very important, 'cause the wlan card in VX6 is only 2,4GHz). Network works fine on Windows, also through D-Link repeater on the other floor. Unfortunately, same network is invisible to Ubuntu on same machine. I have tried some combinations with other GUIs but it did not work. Are there any better drivers for Ubuntu? I need that network badly, but I'm an Ubuntu newbie, so I don't know how to solve that problem. Please help.

  Two linux servers, server1 and server2, are on the same local network (they also have access to an external network). Server2 has a local IP of 192.168.0.2 and a host name of host2.mydomain.com. QUESTION 1: If an application on server1 sends traffic to server2 using a host name of host2.mydomain.com, what determines whether this traffic is routed to server2 using the local or external network? QUESTION 2: To ensure that all traffic sent from server1 to server2 always uses the local network, could I simply include in the server1 /etc/hosts file the following? 192.168.0.2 host2.mydomain.com ...the thinking being, if the servers are always on the same network there should never be a need for server2 to send traffic to server1 via the external network (that I can think of anyway). Is this done in practice, or is some other method preferred?

• How can I get a user account back?

  With all my computers I make one partition for the root and another for /home. This is useful for disasters where I need to reformat the root for ubuntu, but leave my /home data untouched. With the upgrade to 13.10 I had troubles on my wife's computer so I reinstalled 13.10. My own /home files came up, as expected, as if nothing had happened. For my wife, it is a different story - and that is the part where I need help. If I go into Files, computer I can see the home directory. There I can see ilan (my files) and yona (my wife's files). I can open yona, documents and see all her work. This means that all is well and I just need to hook up to her files. So the problem is that I need to create a user called Yona or yona, but something which will get me to exactly the files of interest. I'm not sure if I created her account as standard or an administrator. Is there any way I could tell by looking at the files in /home? I created a new user called Yona as a standard user (hoping that this is the right guess). The account came up as disabled. I pressed on the disabled button so I could change the password. I put in her password but it was refused as too short. Too short, too short, but that is what was used and that is what I need. Can anyone help me before my wife comes home and shoots me?   I have a self hosted server with Apache2 pointed with the domain example.com. I have also some virtual servers www.example.com, cloud.examle.com, etc. This server is in my LAN, and when I try to acces to my server within the lan throw www.examle.com y get my router's configuration page. From outside the LAN www.example.com and cloud.examle.com works properly. From inside the LAN 192.168.1.33 (server internal IP) shows the default webpage (www.examle.com), but I can not get cloud.examle.com I also have a LAN name server in 192.168.1.33 with bind9. • Wifi won't connect to certain networks

  As I write this, I'm in a coffee shop on my laptop, and I am trying to connect to the free wifi network they offer. Every time I select their network from the wifi applet drop down menu, it connects for a second and then disconnects. At the same time, I have my Android phone with me, and it connects to the coffee shop's network without problem. There are a couple of people around me also using the same network with no issues. I asked the staff to check and as far as they can tell there is no problem with their router or anything. I have tried rebooting, but it has not made a difference. I have double and triple checked that I am using the correct WEP password. As an added wrinkle, when I connect to another network, it seems to connect (although I can't use them because they are paid gateway services). So I'm able to ask this question now because I have tethered my laptop to my phone, but it's slow and a workaround, not a solution. All indications are that it's a problem with my computer against this one network. Why would that be and how can I fix it?

  I've just taken a new role in a school and am still familiarizing myself with their network, how ever I have recently been given a task and I'm having a little trouble finding out the fundementals of it. I have an admin network/domain 10.49.x.x and a classroom network/domian 192.168.1.x both connect to a Proxy server 10.49.202.231/192.168.1.51. Each domain has it's own shared folders as you'd expect, files and software installs etc, how ever there is a folder "staff" on the classroom network that all the teachers on the classroom network can access. The users on the admin network would like to access this same folder. How do I go about making this happen?

  I am developing a web site that has a lot of large, high-quality images on the home page. On the home page, there is an image carousel that pulls ten high quality images from a database. The images can be 1 meg each. The carousel images aren't my problem (right now), but it has something to do with it. The problem I am trying to address right now is that I use a high quality background image that I want to continue using, it's about 180k. If I have the background in cache on the home page, I want to use it. If not, then I don't want to use it on the home page. I'll load it from a different page. When the user returns to the home page, and the background image is in cache, I want to use it. Can I test whether an image is already in cache and if so, dynamically load or NOT load based on that? • OpenVPN Chaining

  I'm trying to set up an OpenVPN "chain", similar to what is described here. I have two separate networks, A and B. Each network has an OpenVPN server using a standard "road warrior" or "client/server" approach. A client can connect to either one for access to the hosts/services on that respective network. But server A and B are also connected to each other. The servers on each network have a "site-to-site" connection between the two. What I'm trying to accomplish, is the ability to connect to network A as a client, and then make connections with hosts on network B. I'm using tun/routing for all of the VPN connections. The "chain" looks something like this: [Client] --- [Server A] --- [Server A] --- [Server B] --- [Server B] --- [Host B] (tun0) (tun0) (tun1) (tun0) (eth0) (eth0) The whole idea is that server A should route traffic destined to network B through the "site-to-site" VPN set up on tun1 when a client from tun0 tries to connect. I did this simply by setting up two connection profiles on server A. One profile is a standard server config running on tun0, defining a virtual client network, IP address pool, pushing routes, etc. The other is a client connection to Server B running on tun1. With ip_forwarding enabled, I then simply added a "push route" to the clients advertising a route to network B. On server A, this seems to work when I look at tcpdump output. If I connect as a client, and then ping a host on network B, I can see the traffic getting passed from tun0 to tun1 on Server A: tcpdump -nSi tun1 icmp The weird thing is that I don't see Server B receiving that traffic through the tunnel. It's as if Server A is sending it through the site-to-site connection like it should, but server B is completely ignoring it. When I look for the traffic on Server B, it simply isn't there. A ping from Server A -- Host B works fine. But a ping from a client connected to Server A to host B does not. I'm wondering if Server B is ignoring the traffic because the source IP does not match the client IP pool that it hands out to clients? Does anyone know if I need to do something on Server B in order for it to see the traffic? This is a complicated problem to explain, so thanks if you stuck with me this far.

  I use SVN for my work at home and office, but I usually forget to commit the changes before shutdown. Therefore, I wish I could turn on my home/office PC at office/home. I already have TeamViewer installed on both PCs, so it will be okay as soon as the power is turned on. I have read many articles about this, I found both my PC and office computers support Wake-on-LAN. However, I don't know much about other config. And I need to turn on my computers through the Internet, not on LAN. My office Internet connection has static IP, however, my home Internet connection has dynamic IP, it changes as soon as I reset the modem, but it is not a big problem, I rarely turn the Internet modem off. And I don't have privilege to config office Internet connection, but I have Administration privilege on both PCs. Please give me details steps to turn on my office PC from home, and turn on my home PC from office.

• Linux Permissions

  I am running Fedora 12 and I've setup a partition separate from my root partition to keep shared files and home directories. Now, I've been having permission issues where it says the user cannot chdir into their home directory (/files/home/*). Now, I fixed this originally by chmodding / to 0755 and the home directories also to 0755. And yes, the user is the owner:group of their home directory. Now get this, I didn't change a thing, rebooted, everything still works. Great, right? I boot the server up a day later, and now same ol issue. This is a home server that wasn't on at all at any point in between the working state and non-working state. Also, nothing else was modified. Any ideas? Thanks!

  I'm creating a library libgdata that has some tests and non-installed programs. I am running into the problem that once I've installed the library once, the programs seem to be linking to the installed version and not the local version in ../src/libgdata.la any longer. What could cause this? Am I doing something horribly wrong? Here is what my test/Makefile.am looks like: INCLUDES = -I$(top_srcdir)/src/ -I$(top_srcdir)/test/ # libapiutil contains all of our dependencies! As far as I can tell, it is linking against the newly built library (../src/libgdata.la) based on the make output, so I'm not sure why this would be happening. If i remove the installed files, the local changes to src/* are picked up just fine. Once I have installed the library, though, it creates test/.libs/gdatacalendar instead.   I'm building a simple proof-of-concept for an iPad-specific website that would use video transitions to bring users from section to section. For purposes of the proof of concept, each "section" is just an image with a semitransparent content text box positioned above it. There are just 2 sections, "home" and "contact", and they've got a transition video sandwiched between them via z-indexing. The idea for the proof of concept is that clicking on the "home" section causes it to disappear, followed by playback of the transition video, which (upon completion) disappears to reveal the "contact" section. Everything is working fine with this version of the demo on the iPad and on Safari for Windows and OS X. Here's the JS: var myVideo = document.getElementsByTagName('video')[0]; $('document').ready(function() { $('#home').click(function() { $(this).css('display','none'); myVideo.play(); myVideo.addEventListener('ended', function() { $('#transition').css('display','none'); }); }); }); What I'd like to do is use a jQuery fadeOut() effect to fade out the text box prior to starting the video when the "home" section is clicked. • What's the best subversion client to use for a working copy on a network share that's being modified by other users without a subversion client?

  That probably sounds confusing. Here's my situation: I have a software project I'd like to version control with Subversion. The project files are on a network share which is modified by several users. I'd like to version control the directory with caveat that many of the users are not going to be using a SVN client when they add, modify, move, and rename files. I'll be doing all the version control myself along with one or two other users. When I commit the changes with an SVN client I'd assume that all changes made to file, all deletions, renames, etc are intentional. So how do I detect these changes if as user made them without using a client like TortoiseSVN? Can anyone recommend a client that could determine possible renames, deletions, and moved files?   I have heard perl is a good language at doing regex but i am a bit confused at the characters that requires escaping I tested the code on http://regexlib.com/RETester.aspx and got the result I want //home/dev/abc/code/hello/world.cpp#1 //home/dev/((.*?)/[^/]+).*# Match $1 $2 //home/dev/abc/code/hello/world.cpp# abc/code abc However, I am not quite sure how do i translate this to perl code I tried, \/\/home\/dev\/\(\(\.\*\?\)\/\[\^\/\]\+\)\.\*\# and \/\/home\/dev\/((.*?)\/[^\/]+).*\# and both failed Don't you think the escaping makes the regex very unreadable? Am i using something wrong?
