• Ubuntu 12.04 upgrade (from 11.10) removed all packages installed

  I upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 using bootable USB. After upgrade, all non-default packages from 11.10 are gone. For ex, I did not have Chromium, Eclipse etc. Although, I could see these in the History in the "Ubuntu Software Center". Is there any way I can retrieve all these packages (even reverting back to 11.10 is also fine with me)? What could be a possible reason for this (We plan to upgrade a few more machines)? During the upgrade process, I had unchecked the box which asked permission to look online for upgrade/packages. Co

  In some computer master program online application, it says: Please list the programming languages in which you have written programs. For each language, indicate the length in lines of the longest working program you have written in that language. You may approximate, but only count those parts of the program that you wrote yourself. I don't quite remember that, and I have never counted the lines of each program. Do programmers always know approximately how many lines in each of his programs, and keep record of them? What is the relation between " lines of the longest working program " in a language and familiarity with it? Typically, how many lines will indicate the programmer being excellent, good, fair, or unfamiliar with the language? Is knowing "lines of the longest working program" really helpful?

  I'm an experienced web developer in PHP, HTML, Javascript, MySQL, CSS and I'm running communities where people can register to be able to login and do some stuff. Now more and more people are requestion an App, I told them that I have no time and experience to develope Apps with many functions for such complex communities I am running, but then the users told me what would be enough for them and this sounds already simpler to me: An app to install on Android / iOS just to be able to login (+ autologin), so they appear always online in the community when they have internet connection. Then only 1 function like a counter of new activities regarding their user account (new messages, new replies, etc..), and if they click on the app then a browser window will open to read the info at the main website. So, what you think, it will be a big thing to develope such an app for the members? Is there a big diffrence between developing for Android and iOS? How to test the App if you don't have an Android or iOS phone in example?

  I want to create a big multiplayer world in UDK and I'm having a few difficulties. I created the biggest terrain possible but then any terrain related action I do takes forever. However, I've seen videos of people make same size terrain and working without a problem. My pc is strong enough, so maybe someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong. I want to make it even bigger then the biggest terrain size, so I was thinking of doing level streaming but then I read that streaming is working server side which means if I have a player on every terrain all terrains will still be loaded and I want to save as much memory possible so it will work well online.   I'm using Ubuntu 12.10 64Bit. How to disable ubuntu enter password for keyring default to unlock prompt ? Every time I open Chrome or ubuntu software center, this annoying window jump out. I have being searching online for a long time, most of the answers are like delete ~/.gnome2/keyring XX , but I don't have such directory or go to password and keys , disable some option, but this window is empty in my case, very strange , even I add a new password keyring, it is still empty. • How do I recover a BTRFS partition that will not mount?

  The installation for 12.04 kept failing, and the solution was to have the installer ignore the btrfs partition that I have previously been using for /home. Now that it's installed, I've been trying to get it to mount the btrfs partition so that I can access my 70GB of files.   This being my first time going to TechEd and I want to make sure that I get the most out of it.  The first goal is to make sure that I get to the sessions that cover as many topics as possible.  This is important for me as a Solution Architect consultant specializing in Microsoft technologies.  To this end I have spent some time going through the sessions on the myTechEd site. The other reason for the trip is to connect with the Microsoft development community.  This includes both members of my local Midwest community and the global communities that I have only had online connections with.  Sharing the experience and getting a chance to exchange ideas with new and old friends is a great part of any convention.   I've been very interested in the last few months about getting in to audio programming (I'm from a musical background). I've been a .NET developer for two years and have also done some objective c for an iPhone app recently. I realise I would probably need to work on my C++ chops and have been having a play around with FMOD EX and doing a lot of research into the industry. I was just wondering if anyone could suggest some good resources for audio programming (be they websites, podcasts, books, videos, online courses etc). • Flowmotion Running on Ubuntu Server [migrated]

  I am trying to configure Flowmotion to work on my Ubuntu Server. At present I use LAMP to serve pages from a Virtualbox installation. I will be moving this to a dedicated server but would like to enable true streaming of videos using this installation. I am only interested in open source streaming for a research project and although I have installed Flowmotion via apt-get I don't know how to start the service so that embedded videos located on the server will stream. Can anybody provide any information regarding this or online resources I may have missed? I have checked the documentation however if appears far too complex. Just clarify I'm running VirtualBox 4.2.1 on Mac OSX 10.6.8 and Ubuntu Server 12.06 64-bit

• Writing drivers for a printer?

  My goal is to be able to fax 20 page pdf documents for free. I've looked online, and there are some free fax services, but all of them have their limits. I do have an old fax machine, but the documents that need to be faxed are on the computer, and to print them would be far from free. Unfortunately, the only way to send a fax with the machine is by scanning it. What's strange is that it can scan to the computer and print from it, but it won't fax from it... :(. Is it possible to write something (preferably C#, but it's going to take some learning anyway) that will allow me to send a fax from the computer? I have very little software experience, and none in anything like this, so I have no idea where to start. If it is possible, where can I find all the information needed to write the program?

• How do I read my PDFs and watch videos properly again?

  Whenever I watch videos, either online of local via Totem and/or open PDF files using evince. The system gets really, really bogged down. All apps get really slow, menus take forever to display, switching windows gives me time to make a coffee, etc. I have a couple of bug reports open on this, but what do I need to do to really troubleshoot the issue? I've purged Adobe Flash from the system, but YouTube HTML5 videos still have the issue. A bunch of PDFs saved locally trigger the problem. And to (temporarily) remove the slowness, I need to shutdown the computer, breath for a few minutes, then restart. A simple reboot does not do the trick. How can I identify the cause? This only started on 13.04. I've had Ubuntu on this machine for a year without a problem until "upgrading" to 13.04. I am not a programmer, but I suspect an issue with the Intel video driver.

• ClearTrace Supports SQL Server 2008 R2

  It was a long time coming and I hope worth the wait.  If you have SQL Server 2008 R2 installed on the same box as ClearTrace and you download the latest ClearTrace build (36) you’ll be able to read SQL Server 2008 R2 traces.  I also fixed a bug handling very, very large SQL statements.  I encountered an INSERT statement that was 12MB in size.  It was storing XML in a database.  ClearTrace uses regular expressions to clean up the SQL it finds.  Running two dozen regular expressions over this 12MB string caused the application to crash.  In this build I’m just skipping any statement over 1MB.  I’ll do something a little nicer in the next build. • Should I understand SVN before I jump to GIT?

  I work in a department where no one has ever used source control before, including myself. I am trying to push the concept. I have spent a little while researching SVN. I some basics learned. I can Create/update/checkout/commit with command line and from Tortoise. I am starting to learn how to tag and branch but still confused a lot about conflicts between branches and trunk etc. I am still learning, but I do not have a physical person who can show me anything. Its all from books/tutorials and trial and error. From what I have read online it seems like git is the better thing to know, but its also more complicated. I don't want to overwhelm myself. Should I continue to master svn before moving to git or would I be wiser to just jump to git now? Are there pros and cons to both approaches?

  I am looking for beginner books into PHP 5 (Maybe with a bit into MySQL?) and HTML 5. I started self-teaching myself PHP although it has become a problem as the tutorials online are either outdated or just crap. I also managed to start learning with very little HTML knowledge so I am looking to brush up on my HTML knowledge and get more into PHP. I also am unsure weather I should be looking into XHTML or HTML5, or both so an answer to that would be splendid. I just want to become more self-sufficient and less reliant on other for my programming needs. I've searched Google for books but I'm just not sure which one is the "best" for me and makes for good practice and habits which brings me here.

• Edubuntu - Java Iced Tea and Carnegie Learning

  I've recently built a computer lab running various forms of Ubuntu. I'm testing out Edubuntu to see if it is a better fit for our school, but I'm running up against a problem I can't resolve. One of the programs we use is Carnegie Learning Online, a Java program that I've managed to get working on both Ubuntu 10.04 and 12.04. After updating Java (all distros), when you access the website a .tt applet file is downloaded. With Java installed you can select the IcedTea plugin to open it. On 10.04/12.04, this then opens a new window, Java runs a setup of some sort, and then a new window with the Carnegie program opens. On Edubuntu however, once you've told IcedTea to run it....nothing happens. No errors, just nothing. I've tried this with an older update of Java as well as the newest. Any ideas?

  I'm trying to install opensync-plugin-synce to sync my wm6 phone with Evolution, but when I try (from synaptic, also with ap-get), is: Depende: opensync-module-python but it is not installable In fact, I haven't found opensync-module-python in repositories. Any hint? Is there any way to sync WM6 and Evolution (preferably without intermediate online syncs as Gmail, for instance)? Update: opensync-module-python exists in the repositories for previous versions of Ubuntu (mine is 10.10).... could I install it from there or would I ruin something? Update: should I mark this as impossible? Seems to be no way to sync WM6 phone with Evolution right now....

• How to get familiar with "what happens underneath of Java"?

  I did not study CS nor IT. I just became a developer, now working with Java. Actually, since I now work with a big company writing high-scalable web applications, I think I need to be better with details. I have no understanding of what happens underneath of Java. Java Performance, Server-Side Java might be the buzz words?!! I am very poor with those more of low-level details but I do not know where to look honestly. I started looking for some keywords in Amazon, ended up reading books like "pragmatic programmer", "clean code", "code complete" which IMO they are not what I am looking for. Could you please give me some learning resources (books, articles, blog posts, online trainings) for this matter? I also read this post as well: Approaching Java/JVM internals But I think I need a pre-step before jumping into the OpenJDK, right?!
