  Hi, I have recently signed up for a travel affiliate program and I create a module with search fields to search in the affiliate program. What I need is a component with ..., so when I make a search the search results to shows in the ... in the component. • How do I Benchmark RESTful Service with Variable Parameters?

  I'm currently working on benchmarking a RESTful service I've made, and part of that is making sure it runs in a reasonable amount of times for a large array of parameters. For example, let's say I have RESTful API of the form some_site.com/item?item_id=y. In that case to be sure my service is working as fast as I'd like it to work, I'd want to try out many values for y one by one, preferably coming from some text file. I can't figure out any way of doing this in ab or httperf. I'm open to using a different benchmarking program if I have, but would prefer something simple and light. What I want to do seems like something pretty standard, so I'm guessing there must already be a program that let's me do it, but an hour or so of googling hasn't gotten me an answer. Ideas?

• Seperate compilation in C++

  Suppose you are creating a class with multiple .cpp files (which each contain the implementation of a member function) and have the class' declaration in a .h file. Also, each .cpp file includes the .h file via the include directive. I was told that if you change the implementation of any of the member functions (.cpp files) that you will have to recompile every .cpp file in order to run the program. That is, if I had 5 member functions (each implemented in a .cpp file) and I changed the implementation of 1 of the .cpp files I would have to compile the 1 .cpp file I changed AND the 4 other .cpp files I didn't change in order to correctly run my program. My question, if the previous statement is true, is why is the statement is true? Any insight on this concept would be helpful.

• Are macro definitions compatible between MIPS and Intel C compiler?

  I seem to be having a problem with a macro that I have defined in a C program. I compile this software and run it sucessfully with the MIPS compiler. It builds OK but throws the error "Segmentation fault" at runtime when using icc. I compiled both of these on 64 bit architectures (MIPS on SGI, with -64 flag and icc on an intel platform). Is there some magic switch I need to use to make this work correctly on both system? I turned on warnings for the intel compiler, and EVERY one of the places in my program where a macro is invoked throws a warning. Usually something along the lines of mismatched types on the macro's parameters (int to char *) or some such thing.

• Fastest way to move records from a oracle DB into MS sql server after processing

  Hi.. Ok this is the scenario...I have a table in Oracle that acts like a queue... A VB.net program reads the queue and calls a stored proc in MS SQL Server that processes and then inserts the message into another SQL server table and then deletes the record from the oracle table. We use a datareader to read the records from Oracle and then call the stored proc for each of the records. The program seems to be a little slow. The stored procedure itself isnt slow. The SP by itself when called in a loop can process about 2000 records in 20 seconds. BUt when called from the .Net program, the execution time is about 5 records per second. I have seen that most of the time consumed is in calling the stored procedure and waiting for it to return. Is there a better way of doing this? • problem in reading output of dd command using pipe

  There are many open-source libraries that can be compiled with Visual Studio. I'm porting a program from Linux to Windows, but it depends on a number of libraries. I don't know what the best practices regarding libraries are on Windows. On Linux, these libraries are typically part of the distribution. To use sqlite on Debian, for example, you need only to install libsqlite3-dev and the include files and libraries (both static and dynamic) are automatically installed and available to your program. If you need a different version than your distribution supplies, you can compile it in your home directory, install it to ~/include and ~/lib, and set the appropriate environment variables so that your compiler includes those directories in its search path. What is the best way to use libraries that are distributed as source on Windows? If I link dynamically rather than statically, is there an easy way to copy required DLLs into the output directory to ease redistribution (assuming license requirements are met)?

  Hey all, I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and trying to run a Java program I wrote whose source code is located on a remote machine. I'm using ssh to connect using the following command from the terminal: ssh -X username@hostname When running the program, one of the GUI frames has its buttons missing from view, but they are clickable and work as expected when I can guess accurately where they are. Running the code from my local machine they are present, and running from another windows machine using X-Windows they are present. Been trying to solve this problem for a few hours now but to no avail. Anyone have any helpful insight how to resolve this issue? Thanks!

• Best approach for using Scanner Objects in Java?

  Although I'm more of a C++/ASM guy, I have to work with java as a part of my undergrad course at college. Our teacher taught us input using Scanner(System.in), and told us that if multiple functions are were taking user input, it would be advisable that a single Scanner object is passed around so as to reduce chances of the input stream getting screwed up. Now using this approach has gotten me into a situation where I'm trying to use a Scanner.nextLine(), and this statement does not wait for user input. It just moves on to the following statement. I figured there may be some residual cr/lf or other characters in the Scanner that might not have been retrieved are causing the problem. Here is the code. while(lineScanner.hasNext()) { if(isPlaceHolder(temp = lineScanner.next())) { temp = temp.replace("<",""); temp = temp.replace(">", ""); System.out.print("Enter "+aOrA(temp.charAt(0)) +" " +temp + " : "); temp = consoleInput.nextLine(); } outputFileStream.print(temp + " "); } All of the code is inside a function which receives a Scanner object consoleInput. Ok, so what happens when i run it is that when the program enters the if() the first time, It carries out theSystem.out.print, does not wait for user input, and moves on to the second time that it enters the 'if' block. This time, it takes the input and the rest of the program operates normally. What is even more surprising is that when i check the output file created by the program, it is perfect, just as i want to be. Almost as if the first time input using the scanner is correct. I have solved this problem by creating a new system.in Scanner in the function itself, instead of receiving the Scanner object as a parameter. But I am still very curious to know what the hell is happening and why it couldn't be solved using a simple Scanner.reset(). Would it be better to just simply create a Scanner Object for each function? Thanks, Devjeet PS. Although I know how to take input using fileinputstreams and the like, we are not supposed to use it with the homework.

• NSXMLParser 's delegate and memory leak

  Hello, I am using a NSXMLParser class in my program and I assign a delegate to it. This delegate, though, gets retained by the setDelegate: method resulting to a minor, yet annoying :-), memory leak. I cannot release the delegate class after the setDelegate: because the program will crash.   I teach a sort of "lite" C++ programming course to novices ("lite" meaning no pointers, no classes, just plain old C, plus references and STL string and vectors). Students have no previous experience in programming, so I believe that using an interactive debugger would help them understand program flow, variables, and recursion. The course is taught in Linux. Teaching them to use gdb is just overkill (they will not use nor understand most features). I just need something simple but easy to use: to see at which line the program is now, what is in the stack (local variables, previous calls, etc.). I look something similar to old Turbo Pascal or Turbo C++ Borland's debugger, or Visual Studio debugger. Thank you,

  Hi StackOverflow, I have a Java application that makes heavy use of a large file, to read, process and give through to SolrEmbeddedServer (http://lucene.apache.org/solr/). One of the functions does basic HTML escaping: private String htmlEscape(String input) { return input.replace("&", "&amp;").replace(">", "&gt;").replace("<", "&lt;") .replace("'", "&apos;").replaceAll("\"", "&quot;"); } While profiling the application, the program spends roughly 58% of the time in this function, a total of 47% in replace, and 11% in replaceAll. Now, is the Java replace that slow, or am I on the right path and should I consider the program efficient enough to have its bottleneck in Java and not in my code? (Or am I replacing wrong?)   Here is an example that illustrates my question. I have a program that lists 1000 items. I select 10 of 1000 items. The program enables a button indicating that a command is available for my selection. I click the button, and a window appears. I make some change in the window and click OK. The command changes 5 of the 10 items in my multiple selection, and those 5 changed items now reflect a modified state in my list. My question is: How do I indicate to user that the command affects a subset of a multiple selection before clicking OK? Can anyone cite examples of existing products that handle this scenario well?

  I need to start a program every time the user logs in, but I cannot do this without being met by a UAC dialog asking for permissions for that application. Is there any way to have an application start up on user login without the user having to answer the UAC prompt? I was thinking about running a service, but this would be a last resort. I saw something about an Application Compatibility Toolkit to disable UAC for certain applications, but I feel this is too big of a hassle - even services would be easier to program.   I want to port an open source program to iPhone, the license prohibited any commercial use of the code. I emailed the author and he sent back an email saying freeware is ok. Of course I cannot (should not) charge anything on top of the code. Still, I want to get compensation for my work on UI design, graphics and integration work. So I wonder: Is donation (via PayPal) OK for my case? Is in-app purchase OK? i.e. the program is free, the user has the option to buy addition theme graphics? Thanks
