  which graphics driver will solve my laptop screen display problem? Recently installed Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS on my laptop and upgraded it to 12.10, through 12.04.1 LTS. I am not able to get the display right, from the beginning. During boot laptop screen is all green, and images / videos are not getting displayed properly when logged in. Actual problem started last week, when this laptop was with Windows Vista (preloaded), and I tried to update Nvidia graphics drivers. something went wrong and I couldn't find a way to fix, so decided to install Ubuntu. Over last week, installed / re-installed Ubuntu many times with various drivers with no success. Laptop : Dell Inspiron 1420 Installed OS : ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Current, Ubuntu 12.10) Nvidia driver : GeForce 8400M GS (tried in previous installations; not installed now) Print-screen was not able to catch this issue as mentioned in the comment, so I am posting screen photos.

• Wecam not detected

  after much research ang googling, my web cam is still not recognized. In the time of Ubuntu 11.04 it was working fine. I did a fresh install of 11.10 and not more web cam. All the cheese and camera monotor and V4L tests and all failes with "cannot connect to /dev/video0" or equivalent. The output of 'lsusb' shows the webcam Bus 001 Device 002: ID 05a9:2640 OmniVision Technologies, Inc. OV2640 Webcam What I noticed is that neither /dev/v4l nor /dev/video* exists. If I re-install the v4l package all the /dev/video* are created, but no /dev/v4l If I reboot the /dev/video* are NOT created. I think the trouble is that the device are not created at boot time. I have a DELL Inspiron 1525 and until this fresh install the web cam worked fine. Can somebody help ? Thanks a lot Richard

• Fan always spinning on Maverick

  I use Dell Studio 1555, after update to maverick my fan started spinning full speed allways. I use xserver-xorg-video-ati/radeon drivers because fglrx messes with my desktop resolution when connecting external screen. Processor is mostly idle. U use some desktop effects. On the same configuration on Lucid my fan worked slower. It eats lots of battery time :( Bug filed: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/675156 Any insights how to solve/debug it or work around it?

• Why does my Ubuntu freeze in the middle of something with a blank screen?

  I am facing a serious problem as my Dell Optiplex 745 loaded with Ubuntu 12.04 32bit freezes with a blank screen no mouse cursor no keyboard activity in many occasions. Sometimes when I open firefox, or software center, I really can't tell what the main problem is, but what i am certain about is it i have to do a hard reset to reboot. I tried to use a live-cd to boot but it did the same, tried the recovery console but couldn't find a way to fix from there (I am a new user) suspected a hardware problem but windows runs flawlessly so I believe its something related to ubuntu. Specs: Intel Celeron D 3.06 GHZ 3.0 GB ram Intel built in graphics Q965 1 TB HDD Bios Phoenex 2.6.4 Please help I really love ubuntu and I don't want to go back to windows!

  I've installed Ubuntu 11.4 on my dell xps m2010 using wubi. Then booted up and could not connect to the Internet using 3three huawei e122 usb mobile broadband (I would like this to work also). I've managed to connect through a wireless network, I went to my favorite sites and was told I needed to install adobe flash player.This what I did players run and picture is good. But there is no sound! Then I've tried to play songs in Banshee, but no sound. I have checked everything in sound preferences including test speaker, there is sound. I have sigmatel sound card. • New to Ubuntu - 12.04.1 Kernel Panic on Installation

  I'm a complete Ubuntu and even Linux newbie. I'm learning here, so I'm grateful for any info to help me learn more about this. I have a Dell Dimension 2400 with a Pentium 4 and 1GB of RAM. It's older but it's only going to be doing some small stuff for me when I get it up and going. I've tried installing several versions of Linux (but I really, really want Ubuntu) and I keep getting a similar kernel panic message. The problem is I don't have a clue what that means or how to begin fixing it. I would appreciate any help to get my machine up and going. I have already tried Installing alternate Ubuntu versions Burning multiple 12.04.1 disks Installing other versions of Linux I have a picture of the screen to share; however, I can't post due to the fact that I don't have enough reputation points on this forum because I'm a newbie. • Bad DMA/do_IRQ errors on suspend/resume, with occasional freezing

  Every time I suspend or resume my laptop (Dell Latitude E6520, bought this year), I get 2 messages of the form displayed on the console just before shutting down/starting up: [ 407.107610] ehci_hcd 0000:00:1d.0: dma_pool_free buffer-128, f6f18000/36f18000 (bad dma) On occasion, I get a message of the form: [ 3753.979066] do_IRQ: 0.177 No irq handler for vector (irq -1) On occasion, my machine freezes with a flashing Caps Lock button when suspending, after which I need to do a hard shutdown. This never happened before the messages started appearing (a while back), and I think it never happens without a do_IRQ message appearing (although I'm not sure about that). [There's nothing in the owner's manual on a flashing Caps Lock button; apparently it may be a kernel panic if the scroll lock also flashes, but the laptop doesn't have a scroll lock light, and there's no message on the console saying kernel panic.] Are these bad DMA/do IRQ messages serious, and what can I do to investigate/troubleshoot them and the freezing?   I started using Ubuntu 32 bit last week. I love it but I recognized there was a problem with the cooling system. the fan doesn't stop and slightly loud all the time (that wasn't the case while running with windows 7). I told a friend who claimed that it should be a drivers problem. My machine is dell inspiron n5110 and the official site recommends win 7 64 bit only. there's no support for linux. (the page showing the machine drivers and system recommendation I tried to fix the problem using the "additional drivers", it opens but it shows nothing (no drivers to activate, just the help and the close buttons) is there a way to fix this?

• Why is the Touchpad tab missing?

  So my Dell Vostro 3360 came out of the box with an Alps touchpad which was detected as PS/2. Through these steps, I was able to get as far as it appearing to be recognized as a touchpad. Howevver, I do not get the Touchpad tab in the Mouse/Touchpad settings. Two-finger scrolling appears to work, and the Fn-F3 does disable the touchpad, but the settings are so brutal that it is almost impossible to work with. Very difficult to scroll at all accurately. I'm hoping there's some settings which can be tweaked which will help with this. Any ideas? My xinput listing is as follows: ? Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)] ? ? • How reliable is the battery data in ubuntu the power statistics?

  Right now the power statistics show that: Energy when full: 25.5 Wh Energy (design): 93.2 Wh And indeed the battery doesn't seem to be lasting as long as it used too. My question: Is this data reliable? Does it really indicate that I should replace the battery, or could it be the charger, laptop, or OS that is stopping the battery from fully charging? Is any way of validating the battery is indeed to blame? I'd like to be sure before shelling out 90$ for a new battery. (If it helps, the battery is a 3 year old dell 9 cell rated at 90 Wh).

• How do I disable the "enable/disable wireless" shortcut key on my laptop?

  On my Dell Studio XPS 16, I sometimes accidentally hit this key. Wireless becomes disabled, and hitting it again does not re-enable wireless. I have to hit it an odd number of times, then restart my computer to re-enable wireless. I can't imagine a situation in which I would want to disable wireless from my keyboard. Is it possible just disable the key all-together, so I can avoid this problem? On a related note, what package do I file the bug against? I'm happy just disabling the key, but that's really just a workaround.

  I have an Intel corporation core processor integrated graphics controller (rev 18), and I am trying to get a proprietary driver for my graphics card so I can play Amnesia from the Humble Bundle. I am a female that can easily follow directions but doesn't know much about Linux yet. If you give me precise directions, I will follow them so you can help me fix the problem. I would really appreciate it! My laptop is a Dell n7010. Additional info: I believe that it is the graphics card that is causing Amnesia to crash, but I am unsure. I have tried running it on the lowest possible settings, and it crashes after the first loading screen. :( Also, I installed via the Ubuntu Software Center after purchasing the Humble Bundle. I have not tried the other games yet.

• Alps touchpad detected as a mouse, can't enable/disable multitouch

  Now I know that this has been asked several times here but I couldn't find any decent solution to it. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on my DELL N5110 and my touchpad is detected as a mouse, So I don't have the touchpad options availiable. Can't use multitouch and can't disable it either. I have tried the dkms driver from this link. But when I tried to install it with dpkg -i command, dpkg returns the following error: ERROR (dkms apport): unable to determine source package for psmouse-alps-dkms Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.2.0-25-generic-pae (i686) Consult /var/lib/dkms/psmouse-alps/0.10/build/make.log for more information. I have installed all the updates as well. Can someone help me out with this issue?

  Can hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and login but no fixes work. Tried nomodeset and everything else appears to have upgraded but can't see anything. I really need this computer to work. It is an old Dell with 1.6 processor with old school monitor. I don't know why people are giving my question negative votes. If you know how to fix this, then please help me, as I have read and tried all the solutions that I've found. Just for the record reformatting is not fixing it, and I can't get a boot CD to load either. If you know how to use the blank screen fix tutorial, please explain cos I'm lost. Most people don't understand this stuff and an easy "how-to" fix would be nice.

• CentOS - Add additional hard drive raid arrays on Dell Perc 5/i card

  We have a Dell Poweredge 2900 system with Dell Perc 5/i card and 4 SAS hard drives attached, with NTFS partitions on them. We installed CentOS on one raid array on this controller with a different controller and it is working fine. We are now trying to access the drives shown above and they are not being shown in /dev as sdb, etc. sda is the drive that we installed centos on and it has sda1, sda2, sda3, etc. The CDROM has been picked up as well. If I scan for scsi devices then the perc and adaptec controllers are both found. sg0 is the CDROM and sg2 is the centos installed, however I think sg1 is the other drive but I cannot see anyway to mount the partitions, as only the drive is listed in /dev. • SSD seems dead after wakeup from Windows Sleep, BIOS stalls but doesn't find it anymore

  The morning, the following scary scenario happened: I woke up my Windows system Typed in my username and got an error (something like "could not load security xxx", but unsure of exact wording) System auto-restarted after cliking OK It didn't boot up anymore to the SSD with Windows 7 OS (I have another disk I can boot to, but that doesn't see the disk either). Obviously, this happened right after I instantiated a backup procedure, which hasn't succeeded either. The BIOS can't find the drive when I connect to SATA. And it can't find the drive when I connect it to SAS. I have a Dell Workstation T7400, most recent BIOS (version A06), version of SAS Host Bus Adapter BIOS (HBA) is MPTBIOS 6.14.10.00 (2007.09.29) from LSI Logic Corp. Other findings: When connecting to SATA, the DELL Logo screen stays really long (5 minutes) and then at the end of POST it says that a drive is not found When connecting to SAS, the SAS HBA initializing phase takes long (2 minutes, against normally 15 seconds) When running Dell Diagnostics, it doesn't finish and gives the error Exception occurred in module MPCACHE.MDM file "IOAPICSP.ASM" line 1645. I contacted Dell. On their advice I tried different slots and different cables to no avail. I use an APIC battery power, spikes in the power are thus unlikely. My conclusion so far: the disk is dead. I need this disk very badly because it contains the last few days of important development of which not all code was checked in the moment this happened. Are there any ways to recover dead SSD drives? The drive is a new X25-M G2 160GB model SSDSA2M160G2GC 2.5" in an extension bay and has been running without issues for 3 months on SAS.

  First some background: I have a Dell Inspiron 15R M050, it is still under the Dell limited warranty and the Best Buy Extended warranty. I am currently dual booting Debian Squeeze and Windows 7, the only reason I go into Windows is to play video games specifically steam games. Issue: When I play my games in Windows I am capable of playing for anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours before I suffer a hard-lock. I cannot alt-tab, ctrl-alt-delete, ctrl-shift-escape do anything for 2-3 minutes. After this hard-lock period everything runs fine, I can continue the game for probably another hour at least before I suffer another lock. Games: Borderlands, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Starcraft 2, Garrys Mod What I have tried: Running the diagnostic suite in the dell bios, restoring the OEM Windows recovery partition on the HD, fresh installing Windows 7 Professional, updating BIOS, Calling tech support and having them run a software Hardware Diagnostics suite. The question: I think from the research that I have performed that it might be a lack of thermal paste on the CPU, would I be able to go to Best Buy and have them do a hardware diagnostic from the hardware level then have them be able to tell Dell that there is a hardware issue? Or would there be a different problem?

My questions being; why the connection is set up as 'ghost' and not 'ready' like an active/active configuration ?

• Storing high precision latitude/longitude numbers in iOS Core Data

  I'm trying to store Latitude/Longitudes in core data. These end up being anywhere from 6-20 digit precision. And for whatever reason, i had them as floats in Core Data, its rounding them and not giving me the exact values back. I tried "decimal" type, with no luck either. Are NSStrings my only other option? • Calculating distance from latitude, longitude and height using a geocentric co-ordinate system

  I've implemented this method in Javascript and I'm roughly 2.5% out and I'd like to understand why. My input data is an array of points represented as latitude, longitude and the height above the WGS84 ellipsoid. These points are taken from data collected from a wrist-mounted GPS device during a marathon race. My algorithm was to convert each point to cartesian geocentric co-ordinates and then compute the Euclidean distance (c.f Pythagoras). Cartesian geocentric is also known as Earth Centred Earth Fixed. i.e. it's an X, Y, Z co-ordinate system which rotates with the earth. My test data was the data from a marathon and so the distance should be very close to 42.26km. However, the distance comes to about 43.4km. I've tried various approaches and nothing changes the result by more than a metre. e.g. I replaced the height data with data from the NASA SRTM mission, I've set the height to zero, etc. Using Google, I found two points in the literature where lat, lon, height had been transformed and my transformation algorithm is matching. What could explain this? Am I expecting too much from Javascript's double representation? (The X, Y, Z numbers are very big but the differences between two points is very small). My alternative is to move to computing the geodesic across the WGS84 ellipsoid using Vincenty's algorithm (or similar) and then calculating the Euclidean distance with the two heights but this seems inaccurate. • Is there an algorithm for determining how much daylight there is?

  Is there a function/algorithm that allows me to input the latitude and the approximate orbital position of the earth in so that I can determine how long the sun is up? IE during the winter it would show that the sun is only up a few hours in the far north hemisphere. I did some basic Google search and didn't find much so I was thinking that I might have to do some trigonometry that would allow me to calculate how much the earth is inclined or not toward the sun then use that information along with the latitude to figure out how much sunshine a site would be getting.

  How do you get better than 1024x768 resolution? Just installed MS Server 2008 64bit on a Dell PowerEdge 64bit box (works OK - Previously running MS Server 2003 32bit) After install - gives a a max resultion of 1024x768 I want to change the reslution to 1280x1024 (Same LCD Worked OK on server 2003) When I down load a driver I get a messeage "Radeon 7000 does not recognise driver" Also have Have a new LG W1042 I'd like to use. This goes up to 1440
