  • Checking media [Fail] on boot

    Lately I've been getting this black screen at boot time with 2 lines saying Checking media [Fail] And the time of booting has extended greatly due to that thing (like from seconds to a minute) I have a Dell XPS15 with SSD and I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 and it was not like this before. I don't have a clue what is it connected with - maybe it's due to a kernel update or something. And what do those 2 lines mean.

  • Vostro 3560 Wireless on Ubuntu 12.10

    I have been using Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS on a Dell Vostro 3560 for some time now. At first I had issues with the wireless but I was pointed to a driver from Ubuntu 11.xx for a Broadcom BCM43142 and that did work! however with the upgrade to 12.10 I find myself at a lost because the driver will not work anymore. When trying to reinstall it I get "Driver of bad quality" I still install it but it just wont work. I cant seem to find anything on this issue for 12.10 and didn't know if anyone had any advice or if someone could point me in the right direction on resources to write my own driver for it. As I know C/C++ but have never written a driver for a Linux machine before. Thanks for any help! To be more clear I installed Ubuntu 12.10 Desktop on my Dell Vostro 3560 laptop. When I log in, my wireless card isn't visible in the Network Manager popup menu, although the wired network shows up there.   • Webcam doesn't work in browser...?

    I'm running the latest version of Ubuntu, and I have a Dell Sp2009wfd monitor with built in microphone and webcam. I've gotten the microphone working on mumble and on sound recorder, and I've gotten the webcam to work on Cheese...but it WON'T work through the flash player//website webcam things. I -have- the flash plugin, and I have drivers installed for my video card. Could anyone help me figure this out? It's really frustrating. Thank you...!

I don't really know anything about the Shapefile format, and am having some trouble finding tutorials online -- but I basically want to take latitude/longitude pairs, and run it against the Shapefile data to determine the corresponding neighborhood(s).   • Internet stopped working suddenly on 12.04

    My laptop was running smoothly until yesterday. Today, I can't connect to the Internet at home anymore. I am only able to access the router, but no Internet access. A have a Dell Latitude E6320 with Ubuntu 12.04. At my job, I don't have any problems connecting this laptop both via Wireless and Ethernet. At home, if I try connecting it through Windows, it does work fine. I even checked the MAC address and it's OK. My other laptop, which also runs Ubuntu, is not facing this problem. I have already tried to restart and downgrade network-manager package and its dependencies. Can anyone help me please? I am afraid, I will have to reinstall everything.

  • Suggestions for Troubleshooting WIndows 7 lockups

    I've got a Dell Latitude E6500 that was working fine under Vista x64. I got one of the new Seagate 500GB Hybrid SSD/HD 2.5 drives and thought.. hmm.. let's try Win 7 x64 on it. Bottom line: It works great for hours and then it will hard lock. I don't mean BSOD (or whatever the Win7 equivalent is). I mean my screen is displaying a static image (if there is a clock displayed, it will be frozen at the time the lockup occurred) and the mouse and keyboard do not work. Control-Alt-Delete will not work. I have to hold down the power button to reboot. The event log records NOTHING at the time the lockup occurs. Obviously something is happening to the system to cause the lockup, but the default Windows 7 x64 doesn't log it. How can I log the things Windows doesn't normally log in Event Viewer ?

With this I use another lat/lng to find the distance of certain places in the database but it's not as fast as I want it to be especially with 100+ hits a second. Is there a faster formula or possibly a faster system other than mysql for this?     Hi, If I have a latitude or longitude reading in standard NMEA format is there an easy way / forumla to convert that reading to meters, which I can then implement in Java (J9)? Edit: Ok seems what I want to do is not possible /easily/, however what I really want to do is: Say I have a lat and long of a way point and a lat and long of a user is there an easy way to compare them to decide when to tell the user they are within a /reasonably/ close distance of the way point?     I have a table full of Dealers along with their latitude and longitude. I am trying to determine the top n closest dealers to any given lat and lon. I already have the function to calculate distance between locations, but I want to do as few calculations as possible (my table can contain many thousands of entries). Currently I have to calculate the distance for each entry then sort them. Is there any way to sort before I do the calculation to improve performance? This question is good, but I will not always know my range. Should I just pick an arbitrarily high range then refine my results?   • Dell Dimension 8400 Startup error

    Hello all, thanks first for taking the time to read this and possibly help me...... now I am pretty decent of a computer tech...but not enough. I am having an issue with my computer which is running windows xp and as I mentioned it is a dell Dimension 8400. as soon as I power the system up the fan goes into hyper drive (spins like crazy and is very loud) then the start up screen with dell comes up and the loading bar gets stuck on the process of "Bios Revision A00" and never loads beyound that. I have read alot about it and think that the main problem was that it can not locate the file (which does have an updated version) I think it is A09. I can not enter safe mode, Bios mode or anything. I do have the file on my other computer and I was wondering if there is a way that I can use a usb flash drive (as I have read on other sites) to create a bootable MS-Dos diskette but I am failing at creating as such....is this possible? or is there anything else I can do? I tried to remove the battery from the system for about 10 minutes while it was completely unplug and tried then to reboot it and go into the bios menu but the same thing keeps happening....can anyone help me :-(

A user might not have any idea where "12345 Pineapple" is located... so I want to show something like "Pineapple and Main"... or (larger, major roads) like "US-140 and Hwy 76". I don't really care what "major" is defined as... perhaps any road with higher speed limits... or more than 3 lanes... etc. I don't really care what "close by" is defines as... perhaps within 0-10 miles... or just "closest found".

  • Finding cities close to one another using longitude and latitude

    Each user in my db is associated to a city (with it's longitude and latitude) How would I go about finding out which cities are close to one another? i.e. in England, Cambridge is fairly close to London. So If I have a user who lives in Cambridge. Users close to them would be users living in close surrounding cities, such as London, Hertford etc. Any ideas how I could go about this? And also, how would I define what is close? i.e. in the UK close would be much closer than if it were in the US as the US is far more spread out. Ideas and suggestions. Also, do you know any services that provide this sort of functionality? Thanks
