  • What makes static initialization functions good, bad, or otherwise?

    - by Richard Levasseur
Suppose you had code like this: _READERS = None _WRITERS = None def Init(num_readers, reader_params, num_writers, writer_params, ...args...): ...logic... _READERS = new ReaderPool(num_readers, reader_params) _WRITERS = new WriterPool(num_writers, writer_params) ...more logic... class Doer: def __init__(...args...): ... def Read(self, ...args...): c = _READERS.get() try: ...work with conn finally: _READERS.put(c) def Writer(...): ...similar to Read()... To me, this is a bad pattern to follow, some cons: Doers can be created without its preconditions being satisfied The code isn't easily testable because ConnPool can't be directly mocked out. Init has to be called right the first time. If its changed so it can be called multiple times, extra logic has to be added to check if variables are already defined, and lots of NULL values have to be passed around to skip re-initializing. In the event of threads, the above becomes more complicated by adding locking Globals aren't being used to communicate state (which isn't strictly bad, but a code smell) On the other hand, some pros: its very convenient to call Init(5, "user/pass", 2, "user/pass") It simple and "clean" Personally, I think the cons outweigh the pros, that is, testability and assured preconditions outweigh simplicity and convenience.

  • C++ iterators, default initialization and what to use as an uninitialized sentinel.

    - by Hassan Syed
The Context I have a custom template container class put together from a map and vector. The map resolves a string to an ordinal, and the vector resolves an ordinal (only an initial string to ordinal lookup is done, future references are to the vector) to the entry. The entries are modified intrusively to contain a a bool "assigned" and an iterator_type which is a const_iterator to the container class's map. My container class will use RCF's serialization code (which models boost::serialization) to serialize my container classes to nodes in a network. Serializing iterator's is not possible, or a can of worms, and I can easily regenerate them onces the vectors and maps are serialized on the remote site. The Question I need to default initialize, and be able to test that the iterator has not been assigned to (if it is assigned it is valid, if not it is invalid). Since map iterators are not invalidated upon operations performed on it (unless of course items are removed :D) am I to assume that map<x,y>::end() is a valid sentinel (regardless of the state of the map -- i.e., it could be empty) to initialize to ? I will always have access to the parent map, I'm just unsure wheather end() is the same as the map contents change. I don't want to use another level of indirection (--i.e., boost::optional) to achieve my goal, I'd rather forego compiler checks to correct logic, but it would be nice if I didn't need to. Misc This question exists, but most of its content seems non-sense. Assigning a NULL to an iterator is invalid according to g++ and clang++. This is another similar question, but it focuses on the common use-cases of iterators, which generally tends to be using the iterator to iterate, ofcourse in this use-case the state of the container isn't meant to change whilst iteration is going on.

  • Why does my array initialization code cause a StackOverflowException to be thrown?

    - by MCS
    The following line of code in my class constructor is throwing a StackOverflowException: myList = new string[]{}; // myList is a property of type string[] Why is that happening? And what's the proper way to initialize an empty array? UPDATE: The cause was in the set method, in which I was attempting to trim all values. What's wrong with this code: set { for (int i = 0; i < myList.Length; i++) { if (myList[i] != null) myList[i] = myList[i].Trim(); } }

  • Where is the best place to run initialization code for a UITabBarController?

    - by bobobobo
I have a UITabBarController in my application. I have to perform some customization to the NIB file using code the first time a view embedded in that UITabBarController gets loaded. When applicationDidFinishLaunching occurs, the UITabBarController's views apparently are not loaded -- if I try to modify the view controllers inside a tab bar that the tab bar is to load in applicationDidFinishLaunching, then those changes are ignored. I'm assuming this is because the tab bar didn't finish loading yet. So, I need a good place to put code that will run immediately after a tabbar is fully ready -- i.e. after it has loaded all the views from their respective nib files. I'm finding the only place I can do this is to track the first time viewDidAppear on each individual view controller. Note I can't use viewWillAppear because I need the value of tabBarController.selectedIndex to be accurate, and it is only actually updated after viewDidAppear gets fired, not when viewWillAppear gets fired.

  • Why would I use Dropbox *and* Git for my Emacs initialization file?

    - by Michiel Borkent
I hear a lot of Emacs users have their init file under git version control and sync the git repository over Dropbox, when they run Emacs on multiple systems. Why would you use git in this situation exactly? Usually checking which system you're on and which things to load and set depending on that can happen in one and the same init file for all systems, right? So, isn't it simply enough to put your init file in a Dropbox directory and load that one directly from Emacs then?

  • C: Why does gcc allow char array initialization with string literal larger than array?

    - by Ashwin
int main() { char a[7] = "Network"; return 0; } A string literal in C is terminated internally with a nul character. So, the above code should give a compilation error since the actual length of the string literal Network is 8 and it cannot fit in a char[7] array. However, gcc (even with -Wall) on Ubuntu compiles this code without any error or warning. Why does gcc allow this and not flag it as compilation error? gcc only gives a warning (still no error!) when the char array size is smaller than the string literal. For example, it warns on: char a[6] = "Network"; [Related] Visual C++ 2012 gives a compilation error for char a[7]: 1>d:\main.cpp(3): error C2117: 'a' : array bounds overflow 1> d:\main.cpp(3) : see declaration of 'a'

  • How to automatically trigger the App Object initialization in Powerpoint ?

    - by asksuperuser
It is said here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa211599%28v=office.11%29.aspx Before the procedure will run, you must connect the declared object in the class module (App in this example) with the Application object. You can do this with the following code from any module. Dim X As New EventClassModule Sub InitializeApp() Set X.App = Application End Sub Run the InitializeApp procedure. Run HOW ? By hand ? I want it to automatically run when opening the powerpoint rather. Is there any way ?

    - by Pedro
My speakers work correctly, but when I plug in my headphones, they don't work. I am running Ubuntu 10.04. My audio card is Realtek ALC259 My laptop model is a HP G62t a10em In another thread someone fixed a similar issue (headphones work, speakers not) folowing this: sudo vi /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf (or some other editor instead of Vi) Append the following at the end of the file: alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel options snd-hda-intel model=auto Reboot but it doesnt work for me. Before making and changes to alsa, this was the output: alsamixer gives me this: Things I did: followed this HowTo but now no hardware seems to be present (before, there were 2 items listed): Now, alsamixer gives me this: alsamixer: relocation error: alsamixer: symbol snd_mixer_get_hctl, version ALSA_0.9 not defined in file libasound.so.2 with link time reference I guess there was and error in the alsa-driver install so I began reinstalling it. cd alsa-driver* //this works fine// sudo ./configure --with-cards=hda-intel --with-kernel=/usr/src/linux-headers-$(uname -r) //this works fine// sudo make //this doesn't work. see ouput error below// sudo make install Final lines of sudo make: hpetimer.c: In function ‘snd_hpet_open’: hpetimer.c:41: warning: implicit declaration of function ‘hpet_register’ hpetimer.c:44: warning: implicit declaration of function ‘hpet_control’ hpetimer.c:44: error: expected expression before ‘unsigned’ hpetimer.c: In function ‘snd_hpet_close’: hpetimer.c:51: warning: implicit declaration of function ‘hpet_unregister’ hpetimer.c:52: error: invalid use of undefined type ‘struct hpet_task’ hpetimer.c: In function ‘hpetimer_init’: hpetimer.c:88: error: ‘EINVAL’ undeclared (first use in this function) hpetimer.c:99: error: invalid use of undefined type ‘struct hpet_task’ hpetimer.c:100: error: invalid use of undefined type ‘struct hpet_task’ hpetimer.c: At top level: hpetimer.c:121: warning: excess elements in struct initializer hpetimer.c:121: warning: (near initialization for ‘__param_frequency’) hpetimer.c:121: warning: excess elements in struct initializer hpetimer.c:121: warning: (near initialization for ‘__param_frequency’) hpetimer.c:121: warning: excess elements in struct initializer hpetimer.c:121: warning: (near initialization for ‘__param_frequency’) hpetimer.c:121: warning: excess elements in struct initializer hpetimer.c:121: warning: (near initialization for ‘__param_frequency’) hpetimer.c:121: error: extra brace group at end of initializer hpetimer.c:121: error: (near initialization for ‘__param_frequency’) hpetimer.c:121: warning: excess elements in struct initializer hpetimer.c:121: warning: (near initialization for ‘__param_frequency’) make[1]: *** [hpetimer.o] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/alsa/alsa-driver-1.0.9/acore' make: *** [compile] Error 1 And then sudo make install gives me: rm -f /lib/modules/0.0.0/misc/snd*.*o /lib/modules/0.0.0/misc/persist.o /lib/modules/0.0.0/misc/isapnp.o make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/alsa/alsa-driver-1.0.9/acore' mkdir -p /lib/modules/0.0.0/misc cp snd-hpet.o snd-page-alloc.o snd-pcm.o snd-timer.o snd.o /lib/modules/0.0.0/misc cp: cannot stat `snd-hpet.o': No such file or directory cp: cannot stat `snd-page-alloc.o': No such file or directory cp: cannot stat `snd-pcm.o': No such file or directory cp: cannot stat `snd-timer.o': No such file or directory cp: cannot stat `snd.o': No such file or directory make[1]: *** [_modinst__] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/alsa/alsa-driver-1.0.9/acore' make: *** [install-modules] Error 1 [SOLUTION] After screwing it all up, someone mentioned why not trying using the packages in Synaptic - so I did. • Installing a clean Python 2.6 on SuSE (SLES) 11 using system-wide libraries

    - by optilude
Hi, I've spent most of the day on this, and it is driving me absolutely insane. On all other Unixes I've used, this is a walk in the park, but SLES 11 has me dumbfounded. I need to build Zope on SLES 11 64 bit: Linux <name> 2.6.27.45-0.1-default #1 SMP 2010-02-22 16:49:47 +0100 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux I first tried to just use the YaST-installed Python 2.6. I've also installed python-devel, libjpeg-devel, readline-devel, libopenssl-devel, libz2-devel, zlib-devel, and libgcrypt-devel. The global python2.6 has a lot of cruft in it, and seems to execute stuff in /etc/pythonstart when I use it, which doesn't help. However, the error I get is this: Getting distribution for 'Zope2==2.12.3'. src/AccessControl/cAccessControl.c:596: warning: initialization from incompatible pointer type src/AccessControl/cAccessControl.c:598: warning: ‘intargfunc’ is deprecated src/AccessControl/cAccessControl.c:598: warning: initialization from incompatible pointer type src/AccessControl/cAccessControl.c:599: warning: ‘intargfunc’ is deprecated src/AccessControl/cAccessControl.c:599: warning: initialization from incompatible pointer type src/AccessControl/cAccessControl.c:600: warning: ‘intintargfunc’ is deprecated src/AccessControl/cAccessControl.c:600: warning: initialization from incompatible pointer type src/AccessControl/cAccessControl.c:601: warning: initialization from incompatible pointer type src/AccessControl/cAccessControl.c:602: warning: initialization from incompatible pointer type src/AccessControl/cAccessControl.c:606: warning: ‘intargfunc’ is deprecated src/AccessControl/cAccessControl.c:606: warning: initialization from incompatible pointer type /usr/lib64/gcc/x86_64-suse-linux/4.3/../../../../x86_64-suse-linux/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/lib/libpython2.6.so when searching for -lpython2.6 /usr/lib64/gcc/x86_64-suse-linux/4.3/../../../../x86_64-suse-linux/bin/ld: cannot find -lpython2.6 collect2: ld returned 1 exit status error: Setup script exited with error: command 'gcc' failed with exit status 1 An error occured when trying to install Zope2 2.12.3. Look above this message for any errors that were output by easy_install. I don't know what "incompatible" is referring to here; my guess would be the hardware architecture, but I'm not sure what's incompatible with what in the statement above. I've had problems with system-installed Pythons before, so I tried to compile my own (hence the list of -devel packages above), downloading the Python 2.6 tarball and running: ./configure --disable-tk --prefix=${HOME}/python make make install This installs, but it seems to be unable to find any system-wide libraries. Here's a sample interpreter session: Python 2.6.5 (r265:79063, Mar 29 2010, 17:04:12) [GCC 4.3.2 [gcc-4_3-branch revision 141291]] on linux2 Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. Traceback (most recent call last): File "/etc/pythonstart", line 7, in <module> import readline ImportError: No module named readline >>> from hashlib import md5 Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> File "/home/osc/python-2.6/lib/python2.6/hashlib.py", line 136, in <module> md5 = __get_builtin_constructor('md5') File "/home/osc/python-2.6/lib/python2.6/hashlib.py", line 63, in __get_builtin_constructor import _md5 ImportError: No module named _md5 Both readline and hashlib (via libgrypt) should be installed, and the relevant -devel packages are also installed. On Ubuntu or OS X, this works just fine. On SuSE, no luck. Any help greatly appreciated! Martin

  • How to crawl a webPage with dynamic content added by javascript

    - by blunderboy
I guess there is a news that Google bots have the capability to understand our javascript code. It means this is possible to fully crawl a webpage which has lazy loading feature enabled. I am using Apache Nutch to crawl websites but I don't think it has the capability to fetch the URLs being injected in HTML page by javascript when the page is scrolled down. I see a lot of websites doing lazy loading for performance issue. So Can somebody please explain me how can i crawl the data which comes in HTML page on lazy load. (On scrolling the page down).

  • Are there any surveys on to what degree developers like or hate scrum ?

    - by dparnas
Background: During a conference an analyst pointed out in a tweet that developers hate scrum. Myself and another person responded that this was not the case, and started discussing different scenarios on why developers would dislike scrum. One of the scenarios where that lazy developers are not able to hide in a scrum project. They are constantly challenged by the team to contribute. This discussion resulted in a blog post and video http://elsewhat.com/2010/05/20/lazy-developers-hate-agile-and%C2%A0scrum/ I've gotten three comments which I've tried to answer in a neutral way, but they comments do point out that there are some people who loathe scrum (and I am always 100% certain they are not lazy developers). Question Have there ever been a survey among developers on to what degree developers like or hate scrum ?

  • SQL IO and SAN troubles

    - by James
We are running two servers with identical software setup but different hardware. The first one is a VM on VMWare on a normal tower server with dual core xeons, 16 GB RAM and a 7200 RPM drive. The second one is a VM on XenServer on a powerful brand new rack server, with 4 core xeons and shared storage. We are running Dynamics AX 2012 and SQL Server 2008 R2. When I insert 15 000 records into a table on the slow tower server (as a test), it does so in 13 seconds. On the fast server it takes 33 seconds. I re-ran these tests several times with the same results. I have a feeling it is some sort of IO bottleneck, so I ran SQLIO on both. Here are the results for the slow tower server: C:\Program Files (x86)\SQLIO>test.bat C:\Program Files (x86)\SQLIO>sqlio -kW -t8 -s120 -o8 -frandom -b8 -BH -LS C:\Tes tFile.dat sqlio v1.5.SG using Is this enough to say there is some sort of bottleneck with the shared storage? I need to know if I can take this evidence and say we need to launch an investigation into this. Any help is appreciated.

  • In Objective C, what's the best way to extract multiple substrings of text around multiple patterns?

    - by Matt
For one NSString, I have N pattern strings. I'd like to extract substrings "around" the pattern matches. So, if i have "the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" and my patterns are "brown" and "lazy" i would like to get "quick brown fox" and "the lazy dog." However, the substrings don't necessarily need to be delimited by whitespace. I have a hunch that there's a very easy solution to this, but I admit a disturbing lack of knowledge of Objective C string functions.

  • How to make every word in the text clickable and send it to the script

    - by fakson
I have a text for example "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." When i click on word i must get data from XML or from mysql about this word. How i can make every word active for click and send it to another script for example: I click on dog, and in new window i get information about dog? on fox about fox? every word must be clickable Any ideas, links or examples? Using php, mysql, jquery, ajax

  • Deferred execution and eager evaluation

    - by babu M
Hi Could you please give me an example for Deferred execution with eager evaluation in C#? I read from MSDN that deferred execution in LINQ can be implemented either with lazy or eager evaluation...i could find examples in the internet for Deferred execution with lazy evaluation ,however i could not find any example for Deferred execution with eager evaluation....please help me....its urgent... Moreover, how deferred execution differs from lazy evaluation? In my point of view, both are looking same.Could you please provide any example for this too?

  • How to compare 2 similar strings letter by letter and highlight the differences?

    - by PowerUser
We have 2 databases that should have matching tables. I have an (In-Production) report that compares these fields and displays them to the user in an MS-Access form (continuous form style) for correction. This is all well and good except it can be difficult to find the differences. How can I format these fields to bold/italicize/color the differences? "The lazy dog jumped over a brown fox." "The lazy dog jumped over the brown fox." (It's easier to see the differences between 2 similiar text fields once they are highlighted in some way) "The lazy dog jumped over a brown fox." "The lazy dog jumped over the brown fox. " Since we're talking about a form in MS Access, I don't have high hopes. But I know I'm not the first person to have this problem. Suggestions?

  • Linux tail only whole words

    - by Andrew
Hello, I need to print last 20 characters of string, but only whole words. Delimiter is a space "". Let's consider this example: string="The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" echo $string | tail -c20 returns s over the lazy dog. And I need it to return over the lazy dog instead. Do you know how to accomplish that? Thanks!

  • How to improve performance of non-scalar aggregations on denormalized tables

    - by The Lazy DBA
Suppose we have a denormalized table with about 80 columns, and grows at the rate of ~10 million rows (about 5GB) per month. We currently have 3 1/2 years of data (~400M rows, ~200GB). We create a clustered index to best suit retrieving data from the table on the following columns that serve as our primary key... [FileDate] ASC, [Region] ASC, [KeyValue1] ASC, [KeyValue2] ASC ... because when we query the table, we always have the entire primary key. So these queries always result in clustered index seeks and are therefore very fast, and fragmentation is kept to a minimum. However, we do have a situation where we want to get the most recent FileDate for every Region, typically for reports, i.e. SELECT [Region] , MAX([FileDate]) AS [FileDate] FROM HugeTable GROUP BY [Region] The "best" solution I can come up to this is to create a non-clustered index on Region. Although it means an additional insert on the table during loads, the hit isn't minimal (we load 4 times per day, so fewer than 100,000 additional index inserts per load). Since the table is also partitioned by FileDate, results to our query come back quickly enough (200ms or so), and that result set is cached until the next load. However I'm guessing that someone with more data warehousing experience might have a solution that's more optimal, as this, for some reason, doesn't "feel right".

  • How to index a table with a Type 2 slowly changing dimension for optimal performance

    - by The Lazy DBA
Suppose you have a table with a Type 2 slowly-changing dimension. Let's express this table as follows, with the following columns: * [Key] * [Value1] * ... * [ValueN] * [StartDate] * [ExpiryDate] In this example, let's suppose that [StartDate] is effectively the date in which the values for a given [Key] become known to the system. So our primary key would be composed of both [StartDate] and [Key]. When a new set of values arrives for a given [Key], we assign [ExpiryDate] to some pre-defined high surrogate value such as '12/31/9999'. We then set the existing "most recent" records for that [Key] to have an [ExpiryDate] that is equal to the [StartDate] of the new value. A simple update based on a join. So if we always wanted to get the most recent records for a given [Key], we know we could create a clustered index that is: * [ExpiryDate] ASC * [Key] ASC Although the keyspace may be very wide (say, a million keys), we can minimize the number of pages between reads by initially ordering them by [ExpiryDate]. And since we know the most recent record for a given key will always have an [ExpiryDate] of '12/31/9999', we can use that to our advantage. However... what if we want to get a point-in-time snapshot of all [Key]s at a given time? Theoretically, the entirety of the keyspace isn't all being updated at the same time. Therefore for a given point-in-time, the window between [StartDate] and [ExpiryDate] is variable, so ordering by either [StartDate] or [ExpiryDate] would never yield a result in which all the records you're looking for are contiguous. Granted, you can immediately throw out all records in which the [StartDate] is greater than your defined point-in-time. In essence, in a typical RDBMS, what indexing strategy affords the best way to minimize the number of reads to retrieve the values for all keys for a given point-in-time? I realize I can at least maximize IO by partitioning the table by [Key], however this certainly isn't ideal. Alternatively, is there a different type of slowly-changing-dimension that solves this problem in a more performant manner?

  • sybase - values from one table that aren't on another, on opposite ends of a 3-table join

    - by Lazy Bob
Hypothetical situation: I work for a custom sign-making company, and some of our clients have submitted more sign designs than they're currently using. I want to know what signs have never been used. 3 tables involved: table A - signs for a company sign_pk(unique) | company_pk | sign_description 1 --------------------1 ---------------- small 2 --------------------1 ---------------- large 3 --------------------2 ---------------- medium 4 --------------------2 ---------------- jumbo 5 --------------------3 ---------------- banner table B - company locations company_pk | company_location(unique) 1 ------|------ 987 1 ------|------ 876 2 ------|------ 456 2 ------|------ 123 table C - signs at locations (it's a bit of a stretch, but each row can have 2 signs, and it's a one to many relationship from company location to signs at locations) company_location | front_sign | back_sign 987 ------------ 1 ------------ 2 987 ------------ 2 ------------ 1 876 ------------ 2 ------------ 1 456 ------------ 3 ------------ 4 123 ------------ 4 ------------ 3 So, a.company_pk = b.company_pk and b.company_location = c.company_location. What I want to try and find is how to query and get back that sign_pk 5 isn't at any location. Querying each sign_pk against all of the front_sign and back_sign values is a little impractical, since all the tables have millions of rows. Table a is indexed on sign_pk and company_pk, table b on both fields, and table c only on company locations. The way I'm trying to write it is along the lines of "each sign belongs to a company, so find the signs that are not the front or back sign at any of the locations that belong to the company tied to that sign." My original plan was: Select a.sign_pk from a, b, c where a.company_pk = b.company_pk and b.company_location = c.company_location and a.sign_pk *= c.front_sign group by a.sign_pk having count(c.front_sign) = 0 just to do the front sign, and then repeat for the back, but that won't run because c is an inner member of an outer join, and also in an inner join. This whole thing is fairly convoluted, but if anyone can make sense of it, I'll be your best friend.

  • Making a jQuery selection in IE on html added via .load()

    - by Joel Crawford-Smith
Scenario: I am using jQuery to lazy load some html and change the relative href attributes of all the anchors to absolute links. The loading function adds the html in all browsers. The url rewrite function works on the original DOM in all browsers. But In IE7, IE8 I can't run that same function on the new lazy loaded html in the DOM. //lazy load a part of a file $(document).ready(function() { $('#tab1-cont') .load('/web_Content.htm #tab1-cont'); return false; }); //convert relative links to absolute links $("#tab1-cont a[href^=/]").each(function() { var hrefValue = $(this).attr("href"); $(this) .attr("href", "http://www.web.org" + hrefValue) .css('border', 'solid 1px green'); return false; }); I think my question is: whats the trick to getting IE to make selections on DOM that is lazy loaded with jQuery? This is my first post. Be gentle :-) Thanks, Joel
