• can't open web pages in google chrome

  When I type in google chrome "google.com" I receive such error: 404. That’s an error. The requested URL /cgi-bin/authme?s=0.2068704296834766 was not found on this server. That’s all we know. It seems I'm redirected somehow by some reason. Probably lenovo notebook problem? At the same time IE works fine. This problem reproducable with other webpages too, for example i'm redirected from vkontakte.ru to such web page which doesn't exist too http://www.vkontakte.ru/cgi-bin/authme?s=0.7140683813486247 Also I see such message when chrome starts "Lütfen yönlendirilirken bekleyin", this is very strange because I only have russian and english languages installed in system.

• Keyboard not detected when trying to install Ubuntu 10.10

  I tried to install Ubuntu 10.10 desktop edition on my laptop and unfortunately it didn't detect my keyboard (it detects my mouse) so I couldn't finish installation. Is it something wrong I'm doing? There isn't really much to specify during the installation process and I'm really disappointed that such a trivial task as installation cannot be done without asking a question on a forum. Maybe it's because I'm trying to install it on my laptop? Shall I the download the notebook edition? That sound silly to me.

• Audio recording background noise

  For a long time time I've been trying to get rid of the background noise that appears in every audio recording I make with my computer. Tried different microphones, different sound setting, drivers. Interesting fact - the volume of this sound is equal whether I use and internal notebook microphone or an external one. I tried really good mics, so I'm sure the problem is not in it. Laptop on which this problem appears in HP Probook 4720. OS - Windows 7. P.S. Read an answer to a similar question: Annoying sound from microphone in headphone. Tried everything that was mentioned there. Only I don't have a "DC Offset Cancellation option". And when I disable "Noise Suppression" and "Acoustic Echo Cancellation", noise only becomes more noticeable. What should I do? Update: Changed to ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE_ON_AC=1 in /etc/laptop_mode/laptop-mode.conf, now it is turned on always. But I can't turn it off with laptop_mode stop force, it stays turned on anyway. How do I turn it off again?

• Intel video driver upgrade now makes my external monitor display red-only with HDMI cable.

  I have an HP G60 notebook with a Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset video display (Driver version is 8.15.10.2021). OS is Win7 Home Premium. I also have an LG widescreen display that I was connecting to the laptop using an HDMI cable. It was working great, until I applied an Intel 4 Series Express Chipset update from Windows Update. After the update, if I plug the laptop to the monitor using the HDMI cable, it appears I only get the Magenta channel, cause that is all I see. If I connect with the VGA cable, it works fine. So, is it possible it is just the HDMI cable (which IS cheap in this case - fire sale at Blockbuster), and not related to the video driver update at all?

• Why TVs are costlier than Monitor for same screen size?

  Just wondering, why LCD/LED-backlit TVs cost more (almost double) than LCD/LED-backlit monitors for same screen size. Because I guess that TVs and Monitors, both use almost same technologies and both nowadays support some common connectors (HDMI/D-Sub/DVI etc). And since a Monitor has much higher resolution than a TV for that size, and they are used more closely than TVs, Monitors probably require more engineering effort. So, Monitors are supposed to be costlier than TVs, right? Ex: A ViewSonic (or any) 22"/26" monitor supports Full-HD resolution at 1080p (WSXGA+-1680×1050, WUXGA-1920×1200), while all 22"/26" HDTVs support HD-ready 720p (WXGA-1366x768) only, which is also the resolution of my Notebook's 15.6" screen.

  I just upgraded memory to 4GB for Sony Vaio VGN-SZ460N laptop and trying to install Windows 7 x64. All works fine with default drivers, except video - I am not able to set resolution more than 1024x768. Technical specification says that this model is using: Chipset : Intel® 945GM Processor : NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7400 notebook graphics processing unit (GPU) and Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 I was trying to use Intel 945GM driver, for Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and get error: This computer does not meet the mininum requirements for installing the software Also, I was trying to download nVidia GeForce Go 7400 x64 but it says that there is no compatible hardware. Actually, it has disclaimer that those drivers doesn't work for Sony vaio and recomendation to use OEM website. Sony website has only 32-bit version of driver which says that it cannot be installed and x64 should be used... Any ideas?

• How does the build quality of laptops compare?

  I'm looking to replace my 5 year old laptop. I want my next laptop to endure at least this long. I typically have Thunderbird, Firefox, Eclipse Java IDE, Skype, a ssh session, and Apache Tomcat running. I'm currently running Karmic Ubuntu, but am agnostic about operating system and would move to Win 7 or OS X. I frequently travel with this computer. I also value battery longevity and power conservation (if possible). Above all I'm looking to minimize cost. I think the hardware that best meets my needs is an Intel i7 processor, 8 GB RAM, 100GB @7200 rpm or SSD hardrive, and about 15 inch monitor. These specs are met by most brands. Does anyone know specific pros/cons and build quality for Macbook Pro, Lenovo Thinkpad (W510 or T510), Sony's VPC-F1190, and ASUS G Series G73JH-X1 NoteBook? Are all i7 processors created equal? Do you have other suggestion that meet my needs?

• Inverted question mark only on Microsoft Office applications

  My dad has a notebook and the key which has the "/?°" symbols acts like ctrl. Known factory problem. Anyway, his keyboard also has a "?" marked under the "w" key. Pressing ctrl + alt + w will display the "?" character (question, interrogation mark). Except on Office applications, like Word and Outlook, which will output "¿". I've searched Word and Outlook menus looking for a parameter that could be, somehow, remapping the notebooks keyboards, applying different regional configurations, language, or encodings. Since it only happens on Office apps, I believe the solution is within its options, but I was unable to find it where. Pressing ctrl + alt gr + w will display ? correctly, but I am stumped by this problem. I could remap the keys and make "/?° behave correctly, but my curiosity now is eating me alive. Why only on Office?

  I've accumulated a good collection of book snippets in pdf format from Safari Online and I was thinking about getting an ebook reader, specifically the Sony-PRS300, to hold them all for portable reference. If anyone has done this, two questions. Are there any DRM restrictions when the pdfs are put on the reader? I can't see any restrictions flat out in the pdfs on my notebook. There's a watermark that says the pdf is licensed to me. How good is the reader at rendering complex pdfs, with code snippets and illustrations? I read a previous post where it works fine in landscape mode. I can deal with that. Thanks in advance.

  I have been trying to build up a window's 7 and 2k8 EFI deployment ISO or USB. But struggling to to even get an ISO to boot from even VMware Workstation EFI implementation. The problem is there is no clear requirement to what the EFI bootloader is looking for, "e.g EFI boot file" even ISO's and USB's that are bootable don't find the required .efi file. I'd like to know what is the process EFI bootloader follows to boot the EFI file. e.g; in a EFI windows system its; C:\Windows\Boot\EFI\bootmgfw.efi From DVD it's; F:\efi\microsoft\boot\cdboot.efi from what people tell me it's on USB; G:\efi\boot\bootx64.efi (bootmgfw.efi renamed) I've been testing on a HP notebook with EFI 2.0 and VMware Workstation 8.0 with .vmx file firmware = "efi"

• Asus z53 laptop overheating problem

  hi all, wondering if anyone encountered overheating of asus laptop ? especially the z53 model ? usually the right side of the laptop and vent in the upper corner is blowing hot air when under even minimal load, the CPU temperature can easily get to 65-70C and GPU is even above 80C. I'm using NHC (notebook health control) to set to a higher conservatory power consumption but that helps only a bit, anyone opened up the case ? wondering is require a dust clean ...etc ? • Suggestion for boot manager in external hard disk

  Hi, I just bought an 1TB External Hard drive with eSATA, USB, FW400/800 (LaCie if you are interested). I already put the windows 7 installation in a FAT32 active partition so i can plug the HDD via USB, since my notebook or other computers doesn't support boot via eSATA commonly, and it works. Now i want to do more partitions so i'm looking for a way to have a boot manager as active partitions that allows me to boot from different partitions in my HDD (win7, ubuntu installations for example) I want to know if you know any software to do this or you already have this system. • OneNote can't connect to SkyDrive in Windows 8.1

  Since I installed windows 8.1 I can't open my OneNote notebooks stored on skydrive with the 2013 Office OneNote app. When I click in the office app to open from skydrive it gives back: "We can't get your notebooks right now. Please try again later." I can open them without trouble in the modern UI onenote app, but I can't open password protected pages there. Also if I try to open it from a browser the error message follows: "We couldn't open that location. It might not exist or you might not have permission to open it." Neither can I create new notebooks on skydrive with the office app. "...The specified location is not available. -You do not have permissions to modify the specified location..." Can it be fixed somehow? Or can I at least save a notebook to my hard drive without opening it in office? The backup file got deleted with the win 8.1 installation.

  I am using Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 with Toshiba Satellite Pro P300-1CG. Recently I have installed Windows 7 64-bit. Now once in a while when I plug-in or plug-out wireless mouse adapter, the computer freezes (image stays on the screen, but the computer is not responsive). I have noticed that it mostly happens after I recover my computer from sleep mode. To continue using laptop I have to shut it down by pressing and holding power button for 7 seconds and then booting it up again. What can be done to prevent this?

• Facebook doesn't work on computer, but work on mobile device, both use the same router

  I have a very strange problem and I'm thinking that can be problem with dns or something similar, but not sure and don't know how to solve. My computer is connected to router and every site works fine except facebook (Chrome and Firefox). Chrome shows "Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): The connection was reset." But, on mobile device witch is connected to the same router facebook works fine (Fb application and Delphin browser). Pinging facebook works fine. Clearing cookies and cache didn't help. Also, I performed antivirus and antimalware scan and there is nothing. What can be a problem? • Any way to disable specific CPU sleep modes?

  I just got a new Toshiba Tecra S11 notebook, which has a Core i5 520M CPU, and it appears to suffer from a well-known problem: a high pitched noise when the CPU is idle. Googling around revealed that this is caused by a specific power-saving mode in the CPU. In most cases, C4 mode is blamed for the noise. So my question is: is it possible to disable C4 mode (or any other "sleep" mode) using some utility or BIOS setting? I don't mind if it hurts battery life. I'd appreciate any advice on this matter. It's driving me crazy.

• Windows 8 - Ubuntu dual boot

  I bought a new Toshiba s855 notebook with windows 8 preinstalled. Secure boot feature was enabled by default. I installed latest version of ubuntu after disabling secure boot feature(it was not possible to install ubuntu without disabling secure boot). But now when I enable secure boot, the system automatically boots into windows 8, and it boots into ubuntu when I disable secure boot. • Sharing soundcard to network.

  Let's suppose I have a laptop (L) and desktop PC (D), both with Windows 7 onboard. It is SB X-Fi extreme soundcard with rather good 5.1 home theater connected. But it is not comfortable to watch video sitting on the sofa from my desktop (sofa is in the center of the room and D is in the corner), even though it is 23" monitor. So I'm watching everything from the laptop. So the question - is it possible somehow to "share" soundcard from D to L, so I will watch the video from notebook and listen the sound from the 5.1? The app is started as RemoteApp on server by user from his desktop computer (or, sometimes, he can work from notebook over VPN). Some details about environment: the server automatically shuts down every evening and automatically power-on every morning (this is a requirement) desktop application do some precalculations/precaching on startup and it can take lot of time mentioned application have some memory leaks, so I can't use hibernate instead of shutdown When user launching this app from his computer, he can't start work with it until this app finishes pre-initialization. Is there any way to start RemoteApp session at the server startup (without actual user logon), so that the user could connect to this session from his computer later? I don't want to involve the user's computer to make it work. I have tried to do it by Windows startup script, but have no luck - starting RDP session requires actual user session.

• Reboot loop after Windows XP Service Pack 3 update

  Recently I upgraded to Service Pack 3, and now it seems that something has gone terribly wrong with the update. After logging in, my computer will blue screen after about 5 minutes and then go into a reboot loop (I don't have the exact error message handy). I have a Sager NP2092 notebook, running an Intel chipset. I'd rather avoid having to reformat my XP, especially with my copy of Windows 7 arriving right around the corner. After doing some Googling, I came across this article: Does your AMD-based computer boot after installing XP SP3? However, it deals with the AMD chips, and specifically states not to use its fix on Intel based systems. EDIT After killing the reboot, this is the error that pops up: STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x8A187118, 0x8A18728C, 0x80604438) EDIT2 I have run Memtest86, and it reported 0 errors.

  a friend of mine asked me to re-install his Asus F5Z notebook with Windows XP. I installed succcessfully all drivers from assus driver download site. Everything is working fine but ethernet driver. The installation of Lan Driver for WIN XP finishes with strange message "Please shutdown & plug Realtech PCI-e card to complete the installation. • Can Windows 7 restore itself from image to a smaller HDD than original?

  I've created a full system image using the built-in Win7 utility, it was from a 300GB drive but there is only about 50GB of data. I then swapped disks in my notebook, the new one being 80GB SSD and now when I boot to the system restore applet, go through all of the settings (finding the backed up image on a network share, confirming that I'm willing to repartition my disk etc.), I get this: The system image restore failed. No disk that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found. [Details] Is this because I'm trying to restore to a smaller disk? (Even though the data should fit without any problems, there being only 50GB of it.)
