• Cannot boot from Yumi multiboot USB stick

  I've just created a multiboot USB stick using Yumi. I tried to start my notebook (Asus K70IO) using it, but all I see is just a black screen with blinking underscore even after waiting for minutes. If during this time I remove the USB stick I get the message: "Operating system load error". How do I properly load my Yumi USB stick and use it? I've tried formatting it using Yumi's checkbox to format the stick in FAT32 too, but it didn't help. Now I tried to use Sardu 2.0.5 and met same problem: black screen and blinkin underscore, if I remove stick I see "Operating system load error" and my OS starts to boot. At the same time if I create bootable USB stick from ISO using UltraISO it boots smoothly.

• Grub os-probe showing deleted Windows installation

  I recently purchased a Dell Vostro notebook with Ubuntu Netbook edition 10.04 pre-installed. I tried adding a partition and installed Windows XP but it didn't work out due to too many partitions in the system already. Now I have restored the laptop to factory setting using Dell Utility partition and the Windows partition is completely deleted, however my grub2 still shows Windows on /dev/sda2 sudo os-probe Microsoft Windows XP Professional (on /dev/sda2) Any ideas how to remove it from grub? I know I can remove /etc/grub.d/30_os-probe but I am more interested in why os-probe is showing the deleted partition.

• Ubuntu server loses network connection after ADSL2+ modem reset

  I am using an ubuntu 10.04 server (running on a Lenovo Thinkpad notebook) as my webserver. It is performing well in terms of handling the traffic etc. However my internet connection is ADSL2+ (using Thomson TG782T modem-router) and if the modem is reset, then my server loses network connection. The networkmanager icon shows a red exclamation mark showing that is has no connection. But as soon as I click on it and tell it to connect to eth0, the connection is back on. It must be something that networkmanager is failing to do and because of this, the reliability of my webserver is suffering. Any advice on how this can be fixed?

  i have an HP dm3t notebook which normally comes with windows 7. after some time i figured out how to install Windows XP on it. but now i am facing a problem that the brightess controls dont work so i am unable to change the brightess. the strange thing is that all the other buttons (sound volume, mute, sleep , etc... ) works but not the 2 brightess controls. i already downloaded the "HP Quick Launch Buttons" so i am asking about suggesitions how can i enable these two buttons in windows XP or even if i can change the brightess using some kind of software. thanks

• CPU sometimes hangs at 50% maximum on Windows 8

  Recently I installed Windows 8 on my HP ProBook 6450b and it appears I've got problems when using more than one program at once. Sometimes, when I run multiple programs at once, CPU hangs at 49% and never goes up. I suspect it has something to do with CPU throttling, because sometimes it just goes over 49%. I've got my notebook connected to charger and my plan is set to "Active cooling". The weird thing is that this happens only occasionally. I found nothing in my BIOS that could change this kind of things.

• prevent use of 'net user' command to change passwords on windows vista / xp

  hello the point is, if i'm logged in (and as almost every windows user, i've got an admin-account), and someone comes across my not locked pc, it is possible to change my password the pro-way through using: net user Admin %NEW_PASSWD% what can i do to prevent that, besides not being logged in as admin. i once saw a way, where the 'net user' command was substituted by a .bat file. so if you call 'net user Admin ...', it runs this .bat-file instead, which locks the notebook immediately. problem is, i honestly don't know how i could let windows substitute eg net.exe with a .bat-file. (too little windows knowledge) do you know any way how to do it? i'd appreciate it.

  I have an Ethernet connection that requires 802.1x authentication (TTLS, MSCHAPv2, name+password). My goal is to connect that to something that would then act as an WiFi AP, so I can use the connection on more devices (iPhone, notebook, etc.) Would it be possible/good idea to use Raspberry Pi for this purpose? Or are there better-suited devices to do this? EDIT: found some alternatives but because of low rep can't post more than two links... OpenWRT + wpa_supplicant guide Carambola - works with OpenWRT (but probably not standalone?) Hornet-UB - works with OpenWRT Asus RT-N10+ + OpenWRT how-to EDIT 2: probably going to try TP-LINK TL-WR740N. It's a classic router, but can be flashed with OpenWRT, and the price beats everything else I've seen.

• Auto-crop black margins dynamically of scanned images?

  I have a notebook photocopied and the photocopy scanned, about 200 pages. For various reasons I need to print this material. There are large amounts of black areas at the sides of the page (after the page itself ends), "black margins". The image looks like this: I would like to remove the black places, but keeping all text. * The even and odd pages have the black part at different places. * Notably, there is a white edge outside the black one, too! * Most notably, the black areas has no fixed width (I've tried to overlay all the images for even and odd pages separately). It's width varies. The batch algorythm should be able to detect it. Is there a way to remove these black-white margins automatically, keeping the text?

• Linux kernel startup problems: how to analyze?

  Hello, everyone! After manually updating the kernel from 2.6.33 to 2.6.34 on my OpenSuse 11.2 Notebook, it stops after the message Loading drivers, configuring devices... This stop can be interrupted with Ctrl-C, but when the system enters runlevel 5, no partitions are mounted (but the root partition), many services fail to start, and other strange things are going on. No X11. NOTE: I manually updated the kernel many times before, it worked. Yes, I know, in case of NVidia, the driver has to be recompiled. The question is: How can I analyze the cause of the problem? Doing dmesg gives me soooo much output, I can't "map" it to the output which I see at startup. The output does not contain the string Loading drivers, configuring devices, or similar.

• RDP connections keep dropping

  I have an odd problem on my notebook (HP Pavilion dv7). My Internet connection seems OK for the most part. But lately I've been having trouble with Remote Desktop connections. While I can connect to remote computers, the connection is very flaky, and usually drops after a few seconds. Sometimes it'll successfully reconnect automatically, and sometimes not. But even after successful reconnection, it'll just drop again after a few seconds. This appears to be independent of which RDP host I'm connecting to, and which network I'm connected to locally, whether wireless or wired. Other remote control apps like TeamViewer and Ammyy seem to work fine. Any ideas?

• Can I make Firefox ignore/interpret font sizes specified in pixels?

  Hi all, I have an 11.1" notebook display with 1366x768 resolution, which gives it a DPI of 141. I'm running GNOME and have configured the DPI. Everything works OK except web browsing - far too many websites specify their font sizes in pixels, which ends up with very small text on a high DPI display. My ideal solution would be for Firefox to interpret an absolute pixel size in terms of normal DPI and display it appropriately for my DPI (eg scale it by 141/96). Obviously this would cause problems on the occasion where graphics had been pixel-aligned with fonts in some way, but I imagine that would cause me far less of a headache than either reading minute text, or scaling the text manually each time.   I bought Dell Vostro 3360 notebook with Windows 7 It has 128 GB SSD hard disk, it is already has 4 partitions: Dell partition, Recovery partition, OS partition, Hibernate partition. Here is screenshot (Russian language, but I made some marks): I want to split OS partition, because I need c:\ and d:\ . Reason is that I have a lot of difficulties with administration mode on c:. So I tried to split OS partition but I already have 4 partitions. Can I remove hibernate partition without consequences? I have Hibernate disabled in settings, but I have hiberfil.sys file on c:\ If I can remove it, how can I do this, I can't do this with standard GUI disk managment tool

• Automatically connect to 3G dialup connection

  I have a notebook with an internal 3G modem (a HUAWEI Mobile Connect) which appears to the system as a dialup modem. When I want to connect to the Internet, I need to open the charms bar, click settings, network, the modem and "connect" to open the dialup dialog on the desktop. When the connection is interrupted for some reason, I need to repeat these steps. Is there a way to configure Windows 8 to automatically (and preferably silently in the background) connect with this modem at system startup and automatically restore the connection should it get interrupted? As an operating system which is developed for mobile devices, I would expect it to be able to somehow be able to manage a always-on 3g connection.

  I've just bought a new Asus n55 laptop. It has 2 graphics cards from Intel and NVIDIA. But when I try to install CUDA's developer driver for my GPU I get this error: "This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware". Unfortunately, the only way into the network I have at the moment is SSH to another machine on the same network. me ---|---SSH Box----Home Router My Google foo seems to have abandoned me, I couldn't didn't find anything helpful. Any ideas? Thanks! To clarify: I'm not at home right now. I do however have access to one machine on the network (a QNAP NAS) over SSH. • Cannot delete movie on iTunes for iPhone 4?

  I was on vacation and took some videos, and now the iPhone 4 memory is near full. So I tried to delete other experimental movies I made using Handbrake, so that I can take more video or photos, but if I plug the iPhone 4 into my Notebook computer, I can seem to delete it on iTunes? Maybe because the computer I sync with the iPhone 4 is at home (a desktop), but not with me on vacation. I can't delete it on iTunes, can't delete it on iPhone itself. I am stuck during the vacation, or is there a way to handle it?

• Backlight dimming don't work

  My Packard Bell EasyNote TS11HR notebook does not have an option for dimming the display backlight. At night, my eyes begin to hurt because of the strong light from the screen. My laptop is 2-3 months old and I am sure it has worked before. When I click on the battery icon in the notification area, it says in my language (Danish): "the setting for light does possibly reduce the life of the battery". However, I cannot dim the backlight. I have tried downloading programs for dimming the screen but they only make the screen darker, instead of dimming the backlight. I have tried updating my drivers and looking in the BIOS for a setting. I also plan to use an Ubuntu LiveCD to try controlling it. As of now though, the backlight is locked at maximum. Any ideas?

  I have a D Link router which works in providing a wireless internet connection for my main PC and secondary notebook. I have been advised that the internet connection to the main pc will be better if I wire the router directly to the PC. I have tried this and can not get a connection. I just keep getting the message network cable unplugged. I have had the ethernet adaptor checked out on the pc and the cable is good ( also checked out). Anything I can do or do I have a bad router.   I am not sure but I can't seem to turn on my webcam to record videos which I would broad cast somewhere later on. I have a HP G62 Laptop, and the cam turns on when I use programs like Skype and other Video Calling clients, other wise I can't turn it own, as I don't seem to know how.
