virtual machines: optimal host os to run Windows XP guest os?

My department doesn't have the budget to upgrade my ailing Dell D620 laptop. However, I do have the option to buy my own personal computer, then use my company-issued ISO image to run Windows XP as my guest os using virtualbox or vmware. Therefore, last month, I bought an Acer AX3910-U3012 desktop that had Windows 7 as the host os (and 8G RAM). In short, I was disappointed with the performance while trying to run WinXP as the guest os. (It didn't perform much better than my laptop.) Just wondering what the optimal host os would be for running Windows XP as the guest os? (No, I can't use my company-issued ISO image to build the os for my personal computer.) FWIW, I'm willing to spend up to $2k if it's REALLY worth it, but would prefer to spend no more than $1k. Also, in an effort to cut costs, I'd prefer buy a desktop instead of a laptop. What is your favorite password storage tool?

Aside from personal passwords, I'm always juggling a number of project-specific passwords, including those for network, web and database authentication. Some authentication can be managed with ssh keys and the like, but everywhere I've worked I also faced the need for the management of passwords that need to be available to a number of different people. So what do you use, either for personal or team-based password management? Personally I'd like to hear about cross-platform tools, but I'm sure other people would be satisfied with Windows-only solutions. I know the stackoverflow podcast tackled this issue in #7 and #9, but I'm hoping we can come up with the definitive answer here. Update: Even though this question was asked before its sibling site existed, you should probably add your two cents to the more active question over at superuser, which is a more appropriate venue for this.

Hi, We have a windows server 2008 box at my work place. I want to map a drive from the server to my laptop. I use windows vista home premium x64. I am connected to my workplace through VPN. i can map the drive when I use the administrator account on the server. But the log on is unsuccessful if I use my personal account on the server to map the drive. My personal account on the server is part of Administrators group. Can any one help me with this?

Printer options follow Office documents

One person (John) creates an Office document, and prints this document to his HP printer which is using HP Universal Printing PS (v4.7) driver. He has got Job Storage (Personal job) enabled for this printer, with custom username and a personal PIN. He later sends this document in an e-mail to his colleagues. Another person (Anne) opens the document, and tries to print the document to her HP printer (also using HP Universal Printing driver), but is not able to fetch it on the printer. The Job Storage options from Johns computer follows the Office Excel document, so Anne has to change this manually to her username and her PIN before she can print. What on earth is causing this, and how do we fix it?

Pinning based on origin of a reprepro repository.

I'm on Ubuntu 10.04, and trying to set up a repository using reprepro. I'd also like the pin everything in that repository to be preferred over anything else, even if packages are older versions. (It will only contain a select set of packages.) However, I cannot seem to get the pinning to work, and believe it has something to do with the repository side of things, rather than the apt configuration on the client. I've taken the following steps to set up my repository Installed a web server (my personal choice here is Cherokee), Created the directory /var/www/apt/, Created the file conf/distributions, like so: Origin: Shteef Label: Shteef Suite: lucid Version: 10.04 Codename: lucid Architectures: i386 amd64 source Components: main Description: My personal repository Ran reprepro export from the /var/www/apt/ directory. editing automated SharePoint emails

Sharepoint sends out an automated email when a site collection has reached its quota warning level. The email says: You are receiving this e-mail message because you are an administrator of the following SharePoint Web site, which has exceeded the warning level for storage: https://mysite.xxx.ac.uk/personal/xxx/. To see how much storage is being taken up by this site, go to the View site collection usage summary: https://mysite.xxx.ac.uk/personal/xxx/_layouts/Usage.aspx. The problem is that the usage summary link needs to point somewhere else instead. How can I edit the body of the email to change the link? Thanks.

Vista laptop won't connect to airport extreme

Our previous router died, and to replace it I procured an apple airport extreme. My mac, my wrt54gs (with ddwrt acting as a bridge) and a linux machine have had no problem connecting to the wireless. None of the wired clients are having a problem obviously. The problem is one of my roommates can not connect. That's not strictly true. He can connect to the network, and will, infact, get a dhcp lease. However he cannot get any packets out. Can't ping the router, can't access any web sites, nothing. However he's fine if we switch to an unsecured network. Which is obviously not acceptable. The airport only allows for 'wpa/wpa2 personal' and 'wpa2 personal' (and of course the enterprise versions there of) I keep reading about this problem in multiple spots on the web, but never see any actual answers... How can I move mysites to a new location

I recently restored my content and was instructed to create mysites in a different location than was originally used. Now I have several users mysites in /personal. The new desired location is /mysites. From what I found in the documentation I should back them up and restore them to the new location. Here's what I've done: Backup individual site collection for user mysite stsadm -o backup -url "https://myUrl/personal/john_smith" -filename johnsmith.bkup Restore individual site collection for user mysite stsadm -o restore -url "https://myUrl/mysites/john_smith" -filename johnsmith.bkup -overwrite The result of this and the problem is when i enumerate sites i end up with this: <Site Url="https://myUrl/mysites" Owner="domainname\john.smith" ContentDatabase="WSS_Content_MySites" StorageUsedMB="1.6" StorageWarningMB="90000" StorageMaxMB="100000" /> it leaves off the username part of the url. and if I restore more that one they want to overwrite each other.

How can I get a data usage/access log for an external hard-drive?

Hello, I'm working in an office with many people and sometimes I leave my external hard drive with my personal data inside. I would to know if there is some way to see if my hard disk was used during my absence. I'm not the computer administrator, so I can't use exclusive file permissions and I would really like to know hard disk is opened from another computer. I am using a Mac. Does exist some other way to protect personal data on usb device like an hard-drive? If yes can you write some link to possible guides? I hope there is some ploy!!

virtual machines and cryptography

I suspect I'm a bit offtopic with the site mission, but it seems me more fitting for the question than stackoverflow i'm in preparing to create a vm with sensible data (personal use, it will be a web+mail+... appliance of sorts), i'd like to protect the data even with cryptography; the final choice have to be cross-platform for the host basically, I have to choose between guest system-level cryptography (say, dm-crypt or similar) or host level cryptography with truecrypt. do you think that the "truecrypt-volume contained virtualized disks" approach will hit the i/o performance of the vm badly (and therefore dm-crypt like approaches into the vm would be better), or is it doable? I'd like to protect all the guest data, not only my personal data, to be able to suspend the vm freely without worrying for the swap partition, etc

Getting bounced mail in OS X terminal

I just noticed when launching my terminal a message "You have new mail." I would like to know if someone is trying something malicious with my email and name. The mails are all returns from the same server. avoid dupllcate copies in thunderbird when using gmail labels

I like the system of multiple gmail labels but am concerned about space used. I think that TB stores a separate copy of the whole email in every folder corresponding to a gmail label [including a copy in the "allmail" folder along with a separate copy in the each of the other folders]. Can I arrange to store a single copy of the email in TB,[perhaps in the allmail folder] with a shortcut type pointer from the individual folders to that single copy.[i.e for every email with one gmail label [eg personal] there are already 2 copies in TB, one in the allmail folder and a second in the "personal" folder

Creating multiple profiles in Windows Mobile

I have a HTC HD2 which runs Windows Mobile 6.5. The way you can integrate different accounts is just amazing. You can integrate facebook,twitter,youtube. You can also sync your mail, and calendar from Hotmail or Gmail. It all works just great. Now my problem is that I have different profiles. I have my personal profile, and on the other side I have work profile. My work email is on Gmail Apps, so I have a mail and calendar there also. I also have a personal facebook account, and one I use for work. So my question is if there is a way of switching between these profiles quickly.

Remove Outlook 2007 Calendar from Calendars List

In our company, we use personal folders with Outlook 2007 and make it the default method of downloading messages to keep our mailbox size on the server side small. Under calendar view, i see both calendars, my personal folder one and my server one. How can I remove from the list of calendars my server one since I do not use that one and it only creates confusion and problems such as adding entries onto that one instead of the other or disabling one and not getting alarms? I tried googling on it and read there is a utility to do that but couldn't find the name of it. Thanks in advance for your help.

How can I create an appointment on a shared Outlook calendar

This isn't as basic a question as it may seem. Hence all the descriptive text... I and my team use Outlook 2007. I have my own personal calendar and also I share a calendar with others in my team (which is mainly used to notify everyone of vacations etc.). The others in my team are NOT technical people. I would like to create a shortcut or template that any of us can use to create an appointment in the shared calendar. My initial though was to create a new appointment, but rather than actually put it in the calendar, I would save it as an Outlook Template (.oft) file. Once created, I would send this to my team and tell them to put it in their Templates file and put a shortcut on their desktop. Then, if they want to put a vacation in the shared calendar, they just double-click on the shortcut, change the dates etc. and then save & close it. However, when I do that, it doesn't save the fact that it's an appointment on the shared calendar - it just adds the appointment to the team member's personal calendar. There doesn't seem to be a way to specify a calendar in the template. I've also tried this by saving the template as a .ics or .vcs file, with no better luck. Additionally, if a team member adds an appointment to the shared calendar, other 'sharees' aren't notified, unless the appointment is actually created as a meeting and the other sharees are explicitly invited. I found this online (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/keep-everyone-informed-about-time-away-from-the-office-HA010209819.aspx) which APPEARS to say that what I want to do isn't built in functionality (since it shows a bunch of steps to go through. I'd PREFER not to have to add this stuff to everyone else's personal calendar directly. So... Is this possible to do, natively (i.e. directly in Outlook)? Would a Sharepoint calendar make more sense and allow this functionality? Is there a way to do what I want which will allow the other team members to be notified? Like I said, I'm looking for as simple an interface as possible - these people aren't going to want to do much more than open something and change dates. Additionally, they're probably not going to have any fancy software on their PC's, although they will be up to date with Java and (maybe) .NET frameworks. Also, before anyone gets funny, yes, this has to work with Outlook 2007, as it's a corporate standard - we're not able to change that, even though e.g. Google Calendar would do this wonderfully. Obviously if this functionality is available in Outlook 2010, then fantastic - we might be able to upgrade. Thanks!

I would like to edit the code so that instead of using the currently selected folder as the source for the messages, there would be a hard-coded folder - something like Set Messages = NS.Folders("Personal Folders").Folders("Moved"). I'm a VBA rookie and tried just replacing the Set Messages line with this which resulted in a Run-time error '13': Type mismatch which I think refers to a mismatch of the Dim Messages and the Set Messages commands. I've tried using different Dim definitions with no luck. I'm guessing that someone who knows VBA will see the way to do this right away. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Is it possible to view Facebook news feeds page by page rather than loading it all as I scroll?

If you want to scroll through your Facebook news feed (be it on the main feed, your personal feed, or in groups) to older parts, you have to scroll to the bottom, wait for the ajax load of the next part of the feed, and repeat. The problem with this is that, if you're scrolling down very far, the HTML document just gets bigger and bigger until your browser starts to die due to the overload of resources brought on by added HTML, text, and even images. This pretty much sets a limit to how far back you can scroll. Clicking on months and years on your personal feed has the same effect of cumulatively adding feed segments to the HTML document. I notice that this month/year feature is not available on the main feed and for groups. If there were a way to literally page through the feed so that only a single page's worth of feed data is loaded at a time, that would make scrolling through it much more doable.

Does SQL Server Management Studio 2008 Activity Monitor work with SQL Server 2000?

I am trying to use SQL Server Management Studio 2008's Activity Monitor with an SQL Server 2000 instance to diagnose some query performance issues. I can connect SMSS 2008 to the db fine, and use it to browse objects and run queries. But when I press the Activity Monitor button, it pops up an error message saying: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio This operation does not support connections to Microsoft SQL Server Personal Edition version 8.00.818. This MSDN article implies that Activity Monitor works with SQL Server 2000. Is it the fact that it's Personal Edition that's preventing it from working? The error message isn't clear whether it's the edition or version that's the problem.

What I want is to have a partition for my personal files that works across these systems - so, if I start with Windows or Linux, there's the same "Videos", "Pictures", "Projects" folders. Is it possible? Is there a hd filesystem capable of having writes from both systems without too much risk of corrupting or something?

Is it possible? Is there a hd filesystem capable of having writes from both systems without too much risk of corrupting or something? (Can't be FAT32, I need to store 4gb files). I've read some horror stories of corruption, and would like to know from a sysadmin POV all the risks involved in such scenario.
