  • I'm an experienced PHP programmer, how would it be for me to learn and use Django and Ruby on Rails?

    - by João Paulo Apolinário Passos
I'm an experienced PHP programmer, I still have lots to learn but I consider myself experienced. I sometimes use pure PHP and sometimes some framework like CodeIgniter. I always wanted to learn new technologies like Python and Ruby, and their best frameworks for web are Django and Ruby on Rails, but I want to ask to persons like me who migrated from PHP to some of this technologies if is it worth it; Thank you

  • Is possible to create an intranet site in Ruby on Rails? [closed]

    - by Akromyk
I'm just coming out of a .Net course and I'm wondering whether it is possible to create an intranet site using Ruby on Rails, and if so, would it even be a good idea. I plan on creating a web site for a vendor that hopes to open up a physical location and it would be beneficial for us to go with a technology that could tie their web front into their intranet for helping them manage orders and logins, but at the same time still have a low cost.

  • How to start Rails from a shell script on Debian?

    - by dsp_099
I don't really have any need to mess with passenger or capistrano at the moment. I simply want to run rails on boot on port 3000. I've attempted to replicate this tutorial for node as much as I could to run rails: I've a railsup script in /etc/init.d/ that goes something like: #!/bin/sh export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/bin case "$1" in start) cd /root/rails_app; /usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-2.0.0-p247/bin/rails server -d -p 3005 ;; # starting other stuff *) I've also included it with update-rc.d I got it to work, but only if I run the script manually - it doesn't seem to run on boot. Is there any reason why ../bin/rails is unavailable on boot? I imagine there's something about ruby path \ rvm \ rails that I'm unaware of? Is there a way to use crontab's @reboot for this?

  • Unable to configure Rails with readline

    - by Liam Berg
    1) ./configure --prefix=$HOME/.packages --with-readline-dir=$HOME/.packages 2) configure: WARNING: unrecognized options: --with-readline-dir I am trying to setup the most up-to-date version of Rails on my webhost (I do not have sudo access). Line 1 is the configure command I used for Ruby and Line 2 is the first printed line after executing 'configure'. I've googled this issue and found other people with the same problem but there aren't any real solutions. There are no warnings or errors when configuring/compiling readline-6.1. I am pretty stumped, any help/insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.

  • How do I access site.project.rails (running on host) from VMWare fusion?

    - by Johnny Mnemonic
I have a rails app setup and running on my snow leopard MacBook - the app is being served by Passenger. As part of the setup they had me add entries for 127.0.0.1 site.project.rails in my hosts file so I could reach the site from site.project.rails I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the app show up in VMWare. I have XP setup and browse to http://site.project.rails and I can't get it to show up. I setup a basic rails app, being served at localhost:3000 by webrick, I can get that to load by visiting my hosts ip (http://192.168.1.1:3000/). I added the same hosts I added on my Mac to Windows. I also Bridged the network under settings for the VM. What am I missing?

  • Rails time stamps on images in CSS

    - by brad
Just posted this on Stack but realized it may be more appropriate here: So Rails time stamping is great. I'm using it to add expires headers to all files that end in the 10 digit timestamp. Most of my images however are referenced in my CSS. Has anyone come across any method that allows for timestamps to be added to CSS referenced images, or some funky re-write rule that achieves this? I'd love for ALL images in my site, both inline and in css to have this timestamp so I can tell the browser to cache them, but refresh any time the file itself changes. I couldn't find anything on the net regarding this and I can't believe this isn't a more frequently discussed topic. I don't think my setup will matter because the actual expiring will hopefully happen the same way, based on the 10 digit timestamp, but I'm using apache to serve all static content if that matters

We had a site developed using on ruby on rails. It had Website Web services for mobile app Admin panel to manage data. We started using wordpress to manage site content. We have finished development, have to move to production now. This is the current virtual host code for wordpress to work under /wordpress URI. <Location /wordpress> PassengerEnabled off <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteBase /wordpress/ RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule . /wordpress/index.php [L] </IfModule> </Location> I want to make phusion passenger work for the /admin and /api URIs. And / to go to wordpress. Can we change the document root based on the URI? or any other better solution?

  • Determine Server specs for a Rails with MySQL database (on AWS)

    - by Rogier
I developed a intranet applications with Rails (3.2) for one of my customers. There will be around 30-40 employees working with it. Backend is MySQL (5). What would be the best way to determine the servers specs needed? Given: max. load will be roughly 2400 (40*60) HTTP requests (mixed GET / POST) per hour. 15% of these calls are JSON calls (iOS) avg request will make between 5-10 database calls 500-800 SQL INSERTS per day webpages are fairly simple (no images, just text) avg webpage is 15 request (css/js/etc) and total size is 35-45 KB More specific, since they need access from multiple geographical locations, we are thinking of running a bitnami Ruby stack in the AWS cloud (uptime is important). Any thoughts on a AWS Instance (small/medium) and Utilization (light/medium/heavy) ? Thanks!

  • consulting a network admin for rails and php applications

    - by Karo Devos
Hi I'm a web developer who writes most of the time rails applications. Next month I'm going to switch from my current VPS to linode. I'm wondering how much it would cost to properly set (or teach me how to do it) everything to get my app up and running. My requirements are probably: nginx/apache, REE/ruby, passenger, full blown php environment, system wide RVM, search engine such a sphinx, being able to perform cronjobs. I have some knowledge of unix and I was able to install everything I needed on my development system. However I had quite a few issues setting up everything on my production server.

  • NGINX - Two different rails apps under same domain

    - by Murkin
    I have two different Rails (passenger) apps that I wan to host on one server: somehost.com/ <-- App #1 somehost.com/admin <--- App #2 Tried playing with the 'location' directive, but failed to have both operate. Can someone suggest the correct approach ? (I would prefer both to share same environment, only launch from different directories) EDIT: Sample (desired) config Trying to do something like: server { listen 80; server_name myhost.com; rails_env production; passenger_enabled on; location / { root /opt/main_site/public/; } location /dev { root /opt/admin_site/public/; } }

  • Access Rails under /app/, not /app/public/

    - by blinry
I'm trying to deploy Rails 2.1.2 with Apache 2.2.10 and FastCGI (yeah, bad, ancient, ugly, I know). My application can be accessed via example.com/app/public/, but I want to access it via example.com/app/. In my .htaccess-File (in the app/-directory!) I have: RewriteEngine On RewriteBase /app/ RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^(.*)$ public/dispatch.fcgi [QSA,L] How can I forward each request going to app/ to app/public/? Every time I try this (like, with RewriteRule ^.*$ public/$1 [QSA]) I get a routing error: No route matches "/app/" with {:method=>:get} Help?

  • options for physical architecture of rails site regarding caching server or cdn

    - by timpone
I have a rails app that is set on a single server currently. On production, I force_ssl for everything. I am interested in using a caching server for images (I'm fine with css and js being served from origin for time being). Would nginx or varnish (which I have no experience with) be a better solution (for October 2012)? I'd imagine that it would be easy to switch these around while still on this single server architecture. Or would something like cloudfront (which I also have no experience with) make sense for hosting image files? I know this is a vague question but appreciate any current feedback. thx in advance

  • Ruby on Rails tutorial problem

    - by RailAddict
Quick question which I hope is easily answered.. I am following this tutorial: http://oreilly.com/pub/a/ruby/archive/rails.html?page=2 and all is going well until I try create a controller and view it in my browser. The server is running and it shows the default page okay (http://127.0.0.1:3000). I ran ruby script\generate controller MyTest in my command line and it generated the correct folders and files. The problem is, when I go to http://127.0.0.1:3000/My%5FTest/ it says: We're sorry, but something went wrong. We've been notified about this issue and we'll take a look at it shortly. This must be something I have overlooked somewhere. Any help is appreciated! ruby 1.8.6 rails 2.3.4 Just checked my development logs. • How to store Ruby method references in a database?

    - by Mad Wombat
I am writing my first rails app. It needs to aggregate some data from multiple sites and for each site I have a unique way of getting the data (some provide RSS, some JSON, for some I scrape the HTML etc.). These will run on schedule, probably as a rake task from cron. It seems logical to store the sites and relevant information in a model, but I am not sure where to put unique data retrieval methods. Do I store method names in the model? Do I just name the methods the same as site name and call them that way? Basically, I need a way to read a list of sites and call appropriate method for each site. What is the Ruby on Rails way to do it?

  • Email sent by ActionMailer is taking six hours to deliver mail.

    - by grg-n-sox
So I have been asked to help maintain a website that uses Ruby on Rails. Now, let me just say I've been programming Ruby for awhile but I am still new to Rails. The first problem brought to my attention is how the activation email takes about six hours to arrive. It would be one thing if the email was not being sent due to errors but it is being send correctly, just slow. Also the server this is running on is also its own SMTP. I checked how the email was being formatted before calling the setup_email method and everything looks okay. I even dug into the ActionMailer lib and read through the files there and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. So what is most likely causing the email to take six hours to deliver?

  • has_many :through on self?

    - by Glex
I have a User model. A user can be either a dj, a club, or a clubber (this is controlled by the User#account_type attribute). A club can have many djs, and a dj can have many users: enumerated_attribute :account_type, %w(^clubber dj club), :nil => false do label :clubber => "Clubber" label :dj => "DJ" label :club => "Club" end has_many :dj_club_relationships, :class_name => "User", :dependent => :destroy has_many :dj_user_relationships, :dependent => :destroy has_many :djs, :through => :dj_club_relationships, :class_name => "User" has_many :users, :through => :dj_user_relationships However, this doesn't work as well as expected, since Rails doesn't know, for example, that it needs to destroy all dj_club_relationships with club_id when the user being destroyed is a club, and with dj_id when the user is a dj. How can I help rails know about it?

  • Rails3 and `cd somehwere && do something`

    - by Samer Abukhait
I have a rails project that has other projects under it, sub-projects have rake and bundler files. When I do ruby -e `cd sub-project && rake`, or ruby -e `cd sub-project && bundle`, commands work as expected and use the sub-project rake/bundler files. However, when I do the same thing from a Rails3 console (rails 3.0.3), rake gives the error no such file to load -- initializer, and bundle operates as if it was fired from the root directory. I tried the same commands from a Rails2.3.10 console and they worked as expected. Is Rails3 doing something wrong here? I am using Ruby 1.9.2 via RVM. $ ruby -v ruby 1.9.2p136 (2010-12-25 revision 30365) [i686-linux]

  • undefined local variable or method 'acts_as_gmappable'

    - by MRJ
I attempted to install the gmaps4rails gem. I added gem 'gmaps4rails' to my Gemfile, and ran 'bundle install. It said that my bundle installed successfully. I can find "Using gmaps4rails (0.8.8)" with 'gem list'. I added the specified columns to my users table with rake db:migrate and added acts_as_gmappable and the gmaps4rails_address method to my User model. Visiting pages that involve the user model gives me "undefined local variable or method 'acts_as_gmappable'"error. Is there something that I am missing? For greater context, the code I am using is from the Rails 3 Tutorial. OS X 10.6.6 ruby 1.8.7 rails 3.0.7 passenger 3.0.7

  • Rake migration aborted

    - by user2537714
I'm running Ruby 2.0.0 and I installed it correctly. Just loaded up a gem 'devise' and as I tried to migrate my database changes, it wouldn't work: $ rake db:migrate rake aborted! attr_accessible is extracted out of Rails into a gem. Please use new recommended protection model for params(strong_parameters) or add protected_attributes to your Gemfile to use old one. Then, following another Stackoverflow post, they recommended installing Bundler. I did that successfully and got this: $ bundle exec rake db:migrate rake aborted! attr_accessible is extracted out of Rails into a gem. Please use new recommended protection model for params(strong_parameters) or add protected_attributes to your Gemfile to use old one. Is anyone up to the challenge to help?

  • Controller not accepting params value but the same value hard coded is accepted

  • rake db:migrate and rake db:create both work on test database, not development database

    - by geography_guy
I am new to Stack Overflow and Ruby on Rails. My problem is, when I run the command rake db:create or rake db:migrate, the test database is affected, but the development database is not. rails (3.2.2) my database.yml: # Warning: The database defined as "test" will be erased and # re-generated from your development database when you run "rake". # Do not set this db to the same as development or production. test: &test adapter: postgresql encoding: unicode database: ticketee_test pool: 5 username: ticketee password: my_password_here development: adapter: postgresql encoding: unicode database: ticketee_development pool: 5 username: ticketee password: my_password_here production: adapter: postgresql encoding: unicode database: ticketee_production pool: 5 username: ticketee password: my_password_here cucumber: <<: *test

  • Can I use accepts_nested_attributes_for with checkboxes in a _form to select potential 'links' from a list

    - by Ryan
In Rails 3: I have the following models: class System has_many :input_modes # name of the table with the join in it has_many :imodes, :through => :input_modes, :source => 'mode', :class_name => "Mode" has_many :output_modes has_many :omodes, :through => :output_modes, :source => 'mode', :class_name => 'Mode' end class InputMode # OutputMode is identical belongs_to :mode belongs_to :system end class Mode ... fields, i.e. name ... end That works nicely and I can assign lists of Modes to imodes and omodes as intended. What I'd like to do is use accepts_nested_attributes_for or some other such magic in the System model and build a view with a set of checkboxes. The set of valid Modes for a given System is defined elsewhere. I'm using checkboxes in the _form view to select which of the valid modes is actually set in imodes and omodes . I don't want to create new Modes from this view, just select from a list of pre-defined Modes. Below is what I'm currently using in my _form view. It generates a list of checkboxes, one for each allowed Mode for the System being edited. If the checkbox is ticked then that Mode is to be included in the imodes list. <% @allowed_modes.each do |mode| %> <li> <%= check_box_tag :imode_ids, mode.id, @system.imodes.include?(modifier), :name => 'imode_ids[]' %> <%= mode.name %> </li> <% end %> Which passes this into the controller in params: { ..., "imode_ids"=>["2", "14"], ... } In the controller#create I extract and assign the Modes that had their corresponding checkboxes ticked and add them to imodes with the following code: @system = System.new(params[:system]) # Note the the empty list that makes sure we clear the # list if none of the checkboxes are ticked if params.has_key?(:imode_ids) imodes = Mode.find(params[:imode_ids]) else imodes = [] end @system.imodes = imodes Once again that all works nicely but I'll have to copy that cludgey code into the other methods in the controller and I'd much prefer to use something more magical if possible. I feel like I've passed off the path of nice clean rails code and into the forest of "hacking around" rails; it works but I don't like it. What should I have done?
