• The RPC services keeps stopping

  For some reason, the RPC service keeps stopping which prevents me from remoting into the server. When this happens I have to manually make my way to the server to restart it as simply starting the service (which does not complain when starting), does not let me remote into the server. I have to restart the server manually to be able to remove into the server again. It seems to be happening a few times a day. Does anyone know why this might be happening?

• Postfix SMTP auth not working with virtual mailboxes + SASL + Courier userdb

  So I've read a variety of tutorials and how-to's and I'm struggling to make sense of how to get SMTP auth working with virtual mailboxes in Postfix. I used this Ubuntu tutorial to get set up. I'm using Courier-IMAP and POP3 for reading mail which seems to be working without issue. However, the credentials used to read a mailbox are not working for SMTP. I can see from /var/log/auth.log that PAM is being used, does this require a UNIX user account to work? • Uninstall php and nginx or fix setup

  First off, I'm a huge linux noob - sorry... I'm trying to setup nginx with php-fpm on debian and I'm pretty sure that I've completely screwed it up. nginx seems to be running fine because I can it it from a web browser and it load the stock "Welcome to nginx!" page. I'm not so sure about php-fpm though. When I try something like # restart php-fpm I get: bash: restart: command not found First off php-fpm some how got installed as php5-fpm when I do root@server:/etc/init.d# ls, which seems to contradict every tutorial and help doc I've read (supposed to be 'php-fpm'). I would like this folder to be in my user's home directory ie: /home/administrator/www or /home/nginx/www. I know in order to do this I need to modify nginx.conf, but I find that configuration file difficult to understand. I suppose the fact that my .php scripts aren't being handled is my bigger problem anyways. When I try to see what running on port 9000 (php-fpm default port) with lsof -i :9000 it returns nothing - I guess indicating that it isn't listening. then I head over to vim /etc/php5/fpm/php-fpm.conf and there is no where to designate a port number. So should I just uninstall everything and start from scratch? If so, how do I clean it all up? Any suggestions for a tutorial once I'm ready to try again? Should I attempt to troubleshoot this mess? If so where should I start? Sorry guys, I'm feeling pretty stupid and lost right now. I'm not sure what my next steps are in trying to resolve this issue are. I realize that this is a horrible question for this type of Q&A site, but I'd really appreciate any guidance.

• php info not effect when edit value in php.ini on nginx webserver

  I've already installed php, fcgi, nginx, the system running as no problem, but the problem happen when: I update memory_limit in php.ini, then restart php-cgi, nginx, but when use phpinfo, theo memory_limit is not effected. I install 2 new extensions: curl and memcache, add 2 lines: extension=curl.so and extension=memcache.so, restart php-cgi and nginx, phpinfo also not show up the value curl and memcache in phpinfo. So, how should i do?Please help me.

  I am pretty terrified right now. I'm scared I'm going to get a call in a couple minutes from a hundred people saying the website doesn't work. I was at the terminal changing some configuration files when I went to restart the server to update the .conf files with this command: /etc/init.d/apache2 graceful After I ran that, none of the websites work and I have no idea what to do. There are about 100 errors I am getting according to the log files. They all begin with "PHP Notice" and most relate to "use of undefined constant" Also, I just spoke with a coworker, describing what I did, and he noticed that there are two installations of apache on the server and that I restarted the one that we don't use. • Add Mirror for volumes other than the last one in Windows 7 (disk "not up-to-date")

  I'm using Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. I have an existing 4TB disk with 3 NTFS volumes, a new 3TB blank disk, and I'm trying to mirror the volumes onto the new disk. My Windows install is on an SSD which is Disk 0. The 4TB disk with volumes is Disk 1, and the new blank disk is Disk 2. I can add a mirror successfully for the last volume, but when I try to add a mirror for the first volume I immediately get errors (see below). Is there something I special I need to do to add a mirror for a volume other than the last one? More info: I opened Disk Management, right-clicked on the first volume on the existing disk, went to Add Mirror, and selected the new disk. The first time I did this I was prompted to convert the new disk to a Dynamic Disk, which I approved. Subsequently I got a message: The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-to-date. Refresh the view by using the refresh task. If the problem persists close the Disk Management console, then restart Disk Management or restart the computer. I've refreshed disk management, restarted the computer, and converted the new disk to basic and back to dynamic, but I still get that error message. Looking around for suggestions of a workaround, I saw a suggestion to use the diskpart command line tool. Running diskpart from the Start Menu as Administrator, I did select volume 2 (the first volume I want to mirror) and then add disk 2 (the new disk), and received a somewhat similar error: Virtual Disk Service error: The disk's extent information is corrupted. DiskPart has referenced an object which is not up-to-date. Refresh the object by using the RESCAN command. If the problem persists exit DiskPart, then restart DiskPart or restart the computer. A rescan appears to be successful: DISKPART> select disk 2 Disk 2 is now the selected disk. DISKPART> rescan Please wait while DiskPart scans your configuration... DiskPart has finished scanning your configuration. but attempting to add the mirror again resulted in the same error. The only similar report I found online was this: http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/335780-unable-mirror-all-but-last-partition-drive.html Based on that I attempted to mirror the last volume on the disk to the new disk using diskpart, and that started successfully -- it is currently resynchronizing. More Background: In the course of dealing with a failing 3TB hard drive, I bought a replacement 4TB drive and installed it, then copied the partitions from the failing drive to it using Minitool Partition Wizard Home, and then removed the failing drive and was up and running again normally. Now I've received a warranty replacement for the failing drive, and installed it, and now I'm attempting to mirror my partitions to it.

• Why can't I get Apache2 mod_dumpio working under Lucid Lynx Ubuntu?

  I'm trying to capture all of the traffic to and from an Apache2 web server for troubleshooting purposes, so I did the following to try to set mod_dumpio up properly: Used a2enmod to enable mod_dumpio Changed LogLevel to "debug" in apache2.config Added "DumpIOInput On", "DumpIOOutput On" and "DumpIOLogLevel debug" to apache2.config Issued "/etc/init.d/apache2 restart" to restart Apache Issued "apache2ctl -t -D DUMP_MODULES" to make sure mod_dumpio was loaded I'm watching /var/log/apache2/error.log, but not seeing much there, and certainly not a dump of all input and output. Can anyone help?

• Launchctl: how can I configure a service to stop restarting automatically until next reboot?

But sometimes I want one of the services to quit and not restart for a while. • Gedit opens on all workspaces?

  Im using Fedora 10 with XFCE. Every time I open Gedit, it opens a instance on every workspace. The circle icon on my window border is selected (meaning, enabled on all workspaces). When I disable it to appear on one workspace, then close and restart, Gedit opens normal (current workspace). Question is: How to keep this current configuration? If I restart my system, and start up Gedit, it appears on all workspaces again.

• Apache server completely freezes until it gets restarted

  My server does this every few days. What sucks is that it always seems to do this right after I go to bed, so when I wake up, I'm greeted with the fact that my server has been down for the past 6 or 7 hours. When I first noticed this, I added a cronjob that tries to restart the server every 15 minutes, but I guess that didn't fix it. Once I noticed the server was down, I can this command: /etc/init.d/apache2 restart * Restarting web server apache2 apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName ... waiting ...........................................................apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName httpd (pid 17597) already running ...which is odd, because a restart should restart the server, even if it's already running, correct? I eventually had to "stop" then "start" to get it working again. I then looked through the logs, and found something very weird. It seems that around the time the server crashed, the logs have entries that are wildly out of order.   How can I set the hard disk to never turn off permanently?And the sleep to never, together with the hibernate. Because the options resets to their default values when I turn off, log off or restart my computer. I am using granola on my laptop and it is set to lowest speed. When I restart it turns to full power again. Does it have something to do with the power options resetting to their default values?

  I'm running Windows XP SP3. After automatic updates are installed, there shows up an annoying pop-up window every 10 minutes that tells me whether I want to restart the machine now or later. This interrupts my work as it pops up in the middle of an important process. I don't want to disable automatic updates. I just want to disable this annoying pop-up window and restart the machine without having to see this warning. Thanks.

• mac + parallels and https site test = router restarts

  Ok I have an interesting & very frustrating problem happening. I'm going to explain it the best I can. I work as a graphic designer & web designer on a mac and have a Comcast internet connection that comes through a Comcast branded router (SMC8014) which then ties into an Airport Extreme Base Station which runs my office network. I run OS 10.5.7 and also run Parallels 4.0.3 (running Windows XP) for testing websites in Internet Explorer and so on. Ok, so that the basic background. Here's my issue. I've been collaborating an ecommerce website with another designer/developer and when testing the site on the PC side we have started to run into some sort of network problem. The site is https if that matters at all I suspect it may. Basically when I run parallels for testing I am constantly having to restart the router in order to connect to the test site (it's hosted). Funny thing is I can access the rest of the internet fine, just not this site I'm working on until I restart the router (It's sorta like the site is timing out). This never happens when just running the Mac side of things. It only becomes an issue when Parallels is open and I am doing page refreshes while making css or HTML edits via something like Coda or CSS edit (connected to the hosting server via ftp). The real problem is that once the problem starts I only get about 2 or 3 page loads before I have to restart the router again. It's absolutely crippling. I cannot get any work done when I have to restart the router every couple of minutes. So, if you think this problem is isolated to me, the answer is no. The designer/developer I'm collaborating with has an office a couple miles away and experiences very similar problems under slightly different setup. He also has Comcast as his internet provider and connects his router to an Airport and primarily works on a mac. The main difference is that rather than using a visualizer like parallels to test the website on the PC he uses a real live PC that is on his network. Once he fire up the PC to do testing he runs into the same issue described above. After a couple of page refreshes in Internet Explorer or other browser on the PC the site becomes unresponsive and the router has to get restarted. Any thoughts on what is going on here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• My hard drive can only boot once every two times

  Hi all, I just installed a Kingston 64 GB SSD into my laptop, replacing the old 80 GB 5400 RPM one. The drive starts up and works fine every other time. For example, if I'm running normally, and press "Restart", I get: 2100 Initialization error on HDD0. I turn off the computer manually, restart, and...it boots into Ubuntu again. This happens every other time without fail...anyone know what the problem could be?

  I have a number of User Defined Data Collector Sets running on a Windows 2008R2 server, collecting perfmon stats from various servers. Whenever there is a network interruption, or a server rebooted (at worst, when the server which is running all these DCSs is rebooted), I have to manually restart some or all of the Data Collector Sets. Is there a way to configure them to automatically restart, or otherwise be more resilient?

• Document stuck in printing queue

  My sister still has Win XP. She tried to print a document on her USB printer and now it's stuck in the printing queue. I tried the following: Restart the computer Restart the printer Delete the entry from the printing queue From the printing queue choose Printer\Cancel All Documents Right click the print job and choose Pause The status of the printing job now reads "Deleting - Paused - Printing". Nothing I do seems to get rid of this stuck printing job. What should I do?
