  • How To: Using spatial data with Entity Framework and Connector/Net

    One of the new features introduced in Entity Framework 5.0 is the incorporation of some new types of data within an Entity Data Model: the spatial data types. These types allow us to perform operations on coordinates values in an easier way. There's no need to add stored routines or functions for every operation among these geometry types, now the user can have the alternative to put this logic on his application or keep it in the database. In the new 6.7.4 version there's also this new feature incorporated to Connector/Net library so our users can start exploring it and could provide us some feedback or comments about this new functionality. Through this tutorial on how to create a Code First Entity Model with a geometry column, we'll show an example on using Geometry types and some common operations when using geometry types inside an application. Requirements: - Connector/Net 6.7.4 - Entity Framework 5.0 version - .NET Framework 4.5 version - Basic understanding on Entity Framework and C# language. - An installed and running instance of MySQL Server 5.5.x or 5.6.10 version- Visual Studio 2012. Step One: Create a new Console Application  Inside Visual Studio select File->New Project menu option and select the Console Application template. Also make sure the .Net 4.5 version is selected so the new features for EF 5.0 will work with the application. Step Two: Add the Entity Framework Package For adding the Entity Framework Package there is more than one option: the package manager console or the Manage Nuget Packages option dialog. If you want to open the Package Manager Console, go to the Tools Menu -> Library Package Manager -> Package Manager Console. On the Package Manager Console Type:Install-Package EntityFrameworkThis will add the reference to the project of the latest released No alpha version of Entity Framework. Step Three: Adding Entity class and DBContext We'll add a simple class that represents a table entity to save some places and its location using a DBGeometry column that will be mapped to a Geometry type in MySQL.   • Windows 7 file sharing password protecting or making stuff available to just me

    Even with the new Homegroup feature I'm still finding the way Windows deals with folder sharing utterly baffling. Here's what I want to do. I have two computers, a PC Desktop and a laptop. I also live in a shared flat with other computer users. I have set up a Homegroup and a Workgroup on the desktop and joined them on the laptop and in the home group I have shared video, music and pictures. This is so that anyone on the network can view pictures and listen to music etc. But I want my Documents folder from my desktop to only be available to me on my laptop and not to anyone else that may be on the network. The Homegroup only allows (from what I can gather from the baffling array of options) sharing with everyone or no one. Is it possible to only allow the laptop to access the documents folder on the desktop? The user name and password are the same on both computers.

  • Ubuntu Server running VNC

    I have access to four computers: 1 Ubuntu Server desktop (Version 10.04) 1 Mac Mini (Snow Leopard) 1 Windows desktop (Windows 7) 1 Windows laptop (Windows Vista) The first three will always be on the home network. My goal is to SSH from the laptop into the server and be able, through VNC (or another remote desktop software), to control the windows and mac computers. The goal of this would be a slightly heightened network security over using VNC to directly access the mac or windows desktop. I have successfully used SSH to connect to the server, but have not been able to successfully implement the remote desktop connection. I would appreciate help doing so. Here's what I've done so far: As per instructions here: http://www.stuartellis.eu/articles/vnc-on-linux/ I installed the following: vnc4server – the main VNC server software vnc-java – enables access from Web browsers with Java support xvnc4viewer – a basic VNC viewer I then set up a password using the vncpasswd command. To attempt to connect to the mac, I followed directions I found in a thread at superuser. com and went to "System PreferencesSharing" and enabled "Screen Sharing". Subsequently, I tried entering the following commands into Ubuntu: vncviewer mac_ip_address::5904 vncviewer mac_ip_address:0 vncviewer mac_ip_address:1 They all returned the following: VNC Viewer Free Edition 4.1.1 for X - built Apr 9 2010 18:41:55 Copyright (C) 2002-2005 RealVNC Ltd.   • Connecting a limited user to win server 2003 through LogMeIn

    Logmein support can't help me, maybe someone here can. I have a user on a windows 2003 server (non administrator). When I first created him and tried to connect through remote desktop I got the error "The local policy of the system does not permit you to logon interactively." I looked up the error and saw that this user was not a member of the Remote Desktop Users group. I added him to the group and was able to remote desktop in just fine. Then I tried to connect this user to the server through LogMeIn (pro trial version). I got the same error as when the user was not a part of the Remote Desktop Users group ("The local policy of the system does not permit you to logon interactively."). Can anyone tell me any other groups the user must be a member of in order to be allowed access through LogMeIn? I would image this is a common requirement logmein support seemed to have no idea.

  • Win7 glass-like Aero feature - unable to enable

    I have a 4 months old PC with Win7 Home Premium x64. Windows Experience Index is 5.4. Intel i5 processor 6GB memory nVidia GT220 video card. During games, Windows reported shortage of system resources, so switched the desktop back to "Windows 7 Basic" desktop theme. After game-over, I could switch back to the normal theme and enjoy all Aero eye-candies. However, lately the glass-like window transparency feature got disabled, and I found no ways to enable it again. There is a Troubleshouting option in Control Panel saying: "Find and fix problems with transparency and other visual effects". If I launch that, it does not find anything. Event viewer is full with the following warnings: The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention. Scenario : The Desktop Window Manager responsiveness has degraded. Taskbar, window borders, etc, none of the other transparent features work, and I cannot turn them on. Any thoughts?

    I've got a main desktop computer at home, I'd like watch movies using it but able to control it afar. For example, I would like to lay on my bed and control the desktop using my own laptop via wireless. I've been looking for solutions to my question. I tried to use remote desktop, I can pause the movie but I then have to go to the pc to log in the OS again. I also tried to bind my desktop to my mobile phone over bluetooth, this works as I can control the mouse etc. but I found I can barely see the mouse pointer when at long distance. I still wish I can use my laptop as a remote control, is this possible?

  • Windows 7 search doesn’t find text strings

    I’m not able to find any text strings starting not from the beginning of word in filename or in file content using Windows 7 search. My Windows 7 search configuration: Let’s say I’m searching for a documents containing word “content”. I’m able to find those documents when searching for “content”, “conte”, “con” (as long as the string includes the beginning of the word). "content" "con" But if I search for “ontent”, “tent” or any other combination that doesn’t include the beginning of the word, Windows search won't find it. I've tried other indexing/searching software such as Copernic Desktop search, Google desktop search. Those programs also weren’t able to find part of the word starting from the middle of the word. For instance, it finds “conte”, but doesn’t find “onte”. Finds “conte” Doesn’t find “onte” I got the same problem using Copernic desktop search. On the other hand, when I use non-indexing content search software such as Agent Ransack or FileSeek, I get the same results when searching for “conte” or “onte”: “conte” “onte” Why do all pre-indexing content search applications (Windows search, Google desktop, Copernic desktop search) fail to search for a string inside the words? Why do non-indexing applications find text strings wherever they are: in the beginning, middle or end of the word? I’ve tried wildcards and other constructions with no luck. *onte onte “onte” content:onte content:onte content:~onte All these searched doesn’t find the word “content”. How can I make Windows search find strings from any part of words? Could you try these searches and see if they work for you? Or is this normal behavior? Thank you.     I'm wanting to control my laptop from my desktop. I've been doing this with VNC (PC desktop to Macbook pro) - but I want to remove the 'viewing' aspect of it on my desktop. I.e. I don't want to have the viewing screen on the desktop.. but be able to control the mouse/keyboard via VNC. Is this possible? I'm using realVNC viewer and connecting to the default in-built VNC server on Mac OS X Lion. Cheers for any help.

The situation is as follows: TS idle timeout is disabled via GPO TS terminating disconnected sessions after 1hr (via GPO) My users can log on to the Terminal server, and get a full desktop, OR via rdp files that give access to a few remote applications. When a user connects to a full desktop, everything is fine and dandy, they will remain logged on indefinately, and when they disconnect the session is terminated after an hour. however, when a user connects using a remote application link, the client seems to disconnect after only a few minutes of inactivity, when you click the window, the session reconnects. EventID's on TS server: 4779: This event is generated when a user disconnects from an existing Terminal Services session, or when a user switches away from an existing destop using Fast User Switching. 4778 : This event is generated when a user reconnects to an existing Terminal Services session, or when a user switches to an existing desktop using Fast User Switching users are connecting directly to 3389, not using a TS-gateway at the moment. This behavior is consistent on different clients that we have, Full desktop is fine, RemoteAPP constantly disconnects. The .rdp file used doesn't list any interesting parameters, aside from what application to launch, and where to find it. Can someone explain to me how there can be a difference in behaviour between full desktop, and remoteapp ? since essentially they use the exact same client ? Regards Jeroen

The computers are joined to a domain, so any user can log in any desktop, and his profile is created in every desktop.   • How do special folders work on Windows 7?

    Hello, I did something silly and accidentally moved my my special folders (My Documents, My Music etc.) to the Desktop. Once I noticed my mistake I quickly moved them back. But now my System acts erratically. It continuously creates new empty folders on my Desktop. And I have now two folders named "My Pictures" in my home directory. One of which is magically linked to the one in Desktop while on the command line one one is actually visible. If I delete the superfluous folders on Desktop then the explorer crashes. It is all a big mess. Of course I checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\User Shell Folders and it looks all ok there. So here the question: As anybody got any informations on how Windows 7 handles the special folders which might help be clean up the mess? I am well versed in using both the command line or the registry editor.

  • Vista machine hardwired cannot see xp laptop on wireless

    I have a laptop with windows xp, connected to my wireless router. I am trying to view the shared files on the laptop with my vista desktop computer. The desktop computer is hardwired to the same router. I can see the desktop pc fine on the xp laptop, and view the shared folders. I cannot see the xp laptop when on the desktop pc. I have tried installing the link update for xp, that is not the issue. I have also tried turning off firewalls, no dice. I have scoured google for this issue, and do not see any resolutions. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • OS X can't copy files from Windows Home Server...over wifi.

    I'm a brand spanking new user of OS X, coming from a lifetime of Windows use. I've been setting up my new Macbook Pro and have run into a very unusual problem. Over wifi, I am unable to copy files to or from my Windows Home Server. The problem seems to exist only over wifi, and only to WHS. Here are the details of my setup: 2010 Macbook Pro (Core i7), OS X 10.6.3 Windows Home Server PP3 (virtualized in XenServer 5.5) Windows 7 Ultimate x64 desktop Windows 7 Ultimate x64 in Boot Camp D-Link DIR-655 wireless N router Here is what I've done to narrow down the problem: Files copy fine from WHS to OS X when using gigabit ethernet Files copy fine from desktop to OS X when using gigabit ethernet Files fail to copy from WHS to OS X when using wifi (error -51) Files copy fine from desktop to OS X when using wifi Files copy fine from WHS to Boot Camp when using wifi Files copy fine from desktop to Boot Camp when using wifi From what I can tell, it seems to be some sort of issue between OS X and WHS, but I can't for the life of me see what would be different between shares on WHS and my desktop. They are both connected using smb://ADDRESS (I've tried both by IP and name). I can browse the shares on the WHS, but copying to OS X fails. I originally found the issue while installing VS2010 off an ISO from WHS, mounted to a Windows 7 VM using VMware Fusion. During the installation the VM was unusable - even the clock got behind the host be about 8 minutes. Once I plugged in the ethernet and disabled the wifi things picked up and finished quickly. The Fusion 3.1 RC is the only I think of that I installed that may have messed with the wifi driver. I've also tried resetting the wifi router, and have changed it from being G & N to N-only. Under Boot Camp I get similar speeds as my wife's N laptop. Any ideas? Thanks!

    I would like an old desktop box to use my laptop as a router to access the internet. Here is my setup: I have one ethernet port in the side of my laptop which I want to use to get internet access to my desktop computer. The laptop is connected to the LAN via a wireless link. Both systems run Linux. The desktop autoconfigures itself using DHCP. The laptop is a Kubuntu system. I do not have any crossover cables, though wireshark on the laptop sees the DHCP requests from the desktop just fine, so I doubt that I need one. What do I have to do to make this work?

  • Windows 8 - IE 10 Metro - How to print or save a webpage

    I'm running Windows 8 Pro. My default browser is Internet Explorer 10 (and hence opens as a Modern Windows 8 app). I want to know how to print or save a webpage. There are no related settings available in the browser. The only option is to select "View on Desktop" and the browser interface familiar to IE 9 opens up on the desktop, through which I could access the above said options and additional settings. I know the Desktop is not going away anytime soon and that its still an important part of Windows. But if Microsoft is pitching for the Modern Windows UI, why would they leave out important options such as print & save from it and force a user to access the "old" Desktop mode for the same? Even Windows 8 RT supports plug-and-play access to Printers & Peripherals. So not being able to Print from a tablet or access the File System is definitely not an answer.

    We have a windows file storage (don't ask) and now I want to rsync with the machine from Windows, Mac and Linux. So I installed freeSSHd (login shell is set to C:/cygwin64/bin/sh.exe), set up certificates and testing from Linux the test.dat has 0 bytes: ssh myuser@winmachinename "C:/cygwin64/bin/true.exe" > test.dat Even double checking with actual output works fine: ssh myuser@winmachinename "C:/cygwin64/bin/ls.exe" > test.dat Now, when I call rsync: rsync --progress -avz -e ssh myuser@winmachinename:/c/Users ~/test it fails with: protocol version mismatch -- is your shell clean? (see the rsync man page for an explanation) rsync error: protocol incompatibility (code 2) at compat.c(174) [Receiver=3.1.0] As far as reading the docs, this should not happen, when the first test is successful!? I am by now out of ideas - any recommendations how to debug this?   • Ubuntu 10.04 not detecting multiple monitors

    I have 2 graphics cards, the output from the lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] I have one monitor connected to the 4850 and 2 connected to the 4350. However when I go into System Preferences Monitors the only monitor shown is the one connected to the 4850. Is there something I need to enable for it to be able to use the other card? How do I get this to work. Thanks.   • PSQL 64bit driver error

    I have an Ubuntu 12.04 64bit server setup under Hyper-V. I have installed Pervasive 64bit SQL drivers so that a stock-updater script can run daily (Updates external MySQL database from another local server running Exchequer software / PSQL database).     I have two computers in my house they are laptop and desktop and I use internet which is of wired connection and it has a modem. The modem has 1 LAN port and 1 USB port. So what I did is that I connected the desktop to the LAN which had Windows 7 Home Premium OS and Laptop to the USB which had Windows 7 Home Basic. As home group can be made with windows 7 home premium and above versions I made it via desktop. The home group was established and the data can be exchanged.But one problem I was able to access internet in desktop but not in laptop. So I tried to share internet but I am not able to do so..... So anyone there to help me ???????

  • My NetGear router suddenly started showing limited access for all wifi connected laptops

    I have netgear n300 router which I had installed about 6 months back. Here is how the setup is, I have a local internet provider by the name of "Hathway" they have this modem which is in turn connected to the router and a wire from router is connected to my desktop. As shown in this pic below, except for the laptop I use a desktop rest all the connection is same So with this connection and the below configuration, every thing worked fine. The desktop would work also all my laptops and mobile devices would connect and be able to access the internet without any problem. Now suddenly since yesterday (with no changes made whatsoever to this config) all my laptops start showing the limited connection message and cannot connect to the internet. However the desktop which is connected can access the internet. Can someone please guide me on this.
