• trying to setup multiple primary partitions on ubuntu linux [migrated]

  I currently have ubuntu desktop installed on a harddrive. I want to partition the harddrive so that I can reserve 30 gigs for ubuntu server and 30 gigs for ubuntu desktop. The drive has 300 gigs available. Right now I am booting from dvd drive and installing ubuntu server. I selected "Guided partitioning" and created a 30 gig primary partition of Ext4 journaling filesystem, set "yes, format it" for format partition and set bootable flag to on. I intend to use this 30 gig partition to hold ubuntu server and allow me to boot from it. Now I have two other partitions. They are both set to "logical", one is currently using 285.8 gigs and is using ext4 (when I try to set bootable flag to true, it gives a warning "You are trying to set the bootable flag on a logical partition. The bootable flag is only useful on the primary partitions"). More alarming it says "No existing file system was detected in this partition". Actually, Im thinking that this is the parittion that is supposed to be holding my current Ubuntu Desktop. And of course I want this to be bootable and be a primary partition, so I could dual boot from this and the server partition. Now the third partition is also set to logical and it is being used as swap area. My question is regarding that second partition. Its supposed to be a primary partition thats holding my existing ubuntu desktop edition. How do I switch it to primary and to make sure that its pointing to my existing desktop installation?

• Is there a way to replicate a very large file shares in real-time?

  I have an hourly cron job that copies about 40GB of data from a source folder into a new folder with the hour appended on the end. When it's done, the job prunes anything older than 24 hours. This data changes very often during work hours and is on a samba file share. Here's how the folder structure looks: \server\Version.1 \server\Version.2 \server\Version.3 ... \server\Version.24 The contents of each new folder compared to the last one usually doesn't change very much, since this is a hourly job. Now you might be thinking that I'm an idiot for setting dreaming this up. Truth is, I just found out. It's actually been used for years and is so incredibly simple, anyone could delete the ENTIRE 40GB share (imagine that dialog spooling up... deleting thousands and thousands of files) and it would actually be faster to restore by moving the latest copy back to the source than it took to delete. Brilliant! Now to top this off, I need to efficiently replicate this 960GB of "mostly similar" data to a remote server over WAN link, with the replication happening as close to real-time as possible -- think hot spare, disaster recovery, etc. My first thought was rsync. Total failure. Rsync sees it sees a deletion of the folder that is 24 hours old and the addition of a new folder with 30GB of data to sync! I also looked at rdiff-backup and unison, they both appear to use similar algorithms and do not keep enough meta-data to do this intelligently. Best thing that I can find "out of the box" to do this is Windows Server "Distributed Filesystem Replication" which uses "Remote Differential Compression" -- After reading the background information on how this works, it actually looks like exactly what I need. Problem: Both servers are running Linux. D'oh! One approach to this I'm looking at is this, say it's 5AM and the cron job finishes: New Version.5 folder arrives at on local server SSH to remote server and copy Version.4 to Version.5 Run rsync on the local server pushing changes to the remote server. Rsync finally knows to do a differential copy between Version.4 and Version.5 Is there a smarter way to replicate Samba shares as close to real-time as possible? Anything out there that does "Remote Differential Compression" on Linux?

How do I secure the internal hard drive so that no access is possible while using the external drive? Primarily I want to avoid accidental modification of the hard drive. The desktop runs Vista. • Cannot SSH into Virtual Machine

  I am running a CentOS VM on my desktop that I use for development testing when coding in python. At my school I have a dedicated IP setup for the VM and my desktop so I never seem to have an issue ssh'ing from desktop into VM. I am now at home for winter break and cannot seem to SSH into the VM using the local ip address behind my router, the external IP with port 22 forwarded to my VM, or anything. Strangely enough I can ssh into my production server and then fromt here ssh into the VM, but not from my desktop to the VM directly What should I do to get this to work? Thanks

• Is it possible to use different zsh menu selection behaviour for different commands?

  I'm using the menu select behaviour in zsh, which invokes a menu below the cursor where you can see the various possibilities. The .zshrc option i have set for this is zstyle ':completion:*' menu select=2 By default, pressing Return to select a possibility in this menu only completes the word — it does not actually send the command. For example, I might get a menu like this ~ % cd de<TAB> completing directory: [Desktop/] Development/ Pressing Return here will result in ~ % cd Desktop/ I then have to press Return a second time to actually send the command. I can modify this behaviour to make it so that pressing Return both selects the completion and sends the command by doing this bindkey -M menuselect '^M' .accept-line However, there's a problem with this: sometimes I need to complete a file or directory without sending the command. For example, I might need to do ln -s Desktop Desktop2 — with this bindkey behaviour, trying to complete Desktop will result in ln -s Desktop/ being sent as the command, and obviously I don't want that. I'm aware that just pressing space will let me get on with the command, but it's now a habit. Given this, is there a way to make it so that only some commands let you press Return once (like cd), but all other commands require pressing it twice?

• Windows 7: Shared folder over wifi working for ONLY "Guests"

  Hi, I have a desktop and a laptop connected to same wifi router. Desktop is connected with wire and laptop with wifi. Both the system runs windows 7 and are on the same workgroup. I have shared some folders on desktop and can view the shared folder list on laptop under "network places". But when I try to open a folder, a prompt appears for username and password. When I enter BOTH username and password, It does not authenticate when I enter ONLY username, I get:- "Windows cannot access \WIn71\Setups you do not have permission to access ..." Now to get around this message I have to give access to "Guests" group on my desktop shared folder. Cant seem to figure out why It cant authenticate username with password. And giving access to "Guests" does not sounds safe!

• GIT: clone works, remote push doesn't. Remote repository over copssh.

  Hi all, I've "setup-a-msysgit-server-with-copssh-on-windows", following Tim Davis' guide and I was now learning how to use the git commands, following Jason Meridth's guide, and I have managed to get everything working fine, but now I can't pass the push command. I have set the server and the client on the same machine (for now), win7-x64. • How to Upgrade Your Netbook to Windows 7 Home Premium

  Would you like more features and flash in Windows on your netbook?  Here’s how you can easily upgrade your netbook to Windows 7 Home Premium the easy way. Most new netbooks today ship with Windows 7 Starter, which is the cheapest edition of Windows 7.  It is fine for many computing tasks, and will run all your favorite programs great, but it lacks many customization, multimedia, and business features found in higher editions.  Here we’ll show you how you can quickly upgrade your netbook to more full-featured edition of Windows 7 using Windows Anytime Upgrade.  Also, if you want to upgrade your laptop or desktop to another edition of Windows 7, say Professional, you can follow these same steps to upgrade it, too. Please note: This is only for computers already running Windows 7.  If your netbook is running XP or Vista, you will have to run a traditional upgrade to install Windows 7. Upgrade Advisor First, let’s make sure your netbook can support the extra features, such as Aero Glass, in Windows 7 Home Premium.  Most modern netbooks that ship with Windows 7 Starter can run the advanced features in Windows 7 Home Premium, but let’s check just in case.  Download the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor (link below), and install as normal. Once it’s installed, run it and click Start Check.   Make sure you’re connected to the internet before you run the check, or otherwise you may see this error message.  If you see it, click Ok and then connect to the internet and start the check again. It will now scan all of your programs and hardware to make sure they’re compatible with Windows 7.  Since you’re already running Windows 7 Starter, it will also tell you if your computer will support the features in other editions of Windows 7. After a few moments, the Upgrade Advisor will show you want it found.  Here we see that our netbook, a Samsung N150, can be upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate. We also see that we had one issue, but this was because a driver we had installed was not recognized.  Click “See all system requirements” to see what your netbook can do with the new edition. This shows you which of the requirements, including support for Windows Aero, your netbook meets.  Here our netbook supports Aero, so we’re ready to go upgrade. For more, check out our article on how to make sure your computer can run Windows 7 with Upgrade Advisor. Upgrade with Anytime Upgrade Now, we’re ready to upgrade our netbook to Windows 7 Home Premium.  Enter “Anytime Upgrade” in the Start menu search,and select Windows Anytime Upgrade. Windows Anytime Upgrade lets you upgrade using product key you already have or one you purchase during the upgrade process.  And, it installs without any downloads or Windows disks, so it works great even for netbooks without DVD drives. Anytime Upgrades are cheaper than a standard upgrade, and for a limited time, select retailers in the US are offering Anytime Upgrades to Windows 7 Home Premium for only $49.99 if purchased with a new netbook.  If you already have a netbook running Windows 7 Starter, you can either purchase an Anytime Upgrade package at a retail store or purchase a key online during the upgrade process for $79.95.  Or, if you have a standard Windows 7 product key (full or upgrade), you can use it in Anytime upgrade.  This is especially nice if you can purchase Windows 7 cheaper through your school, university, or office. Purchase an upgrade online To purchase an upgrade online, click “Go online to choose the edition of Windows 7 that’s best for you”.   Here you can see a comparison of the features of each edition of Windows 7.  Note that you can upgrade to either Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate.  We chose home Premium because it has most of the features that home users want, including Media Center and Aero Glass effects.  Also note that the price of each upgrade is cheaper than the respective upgrade from Windows XP or Vista.  Click buy under the edition you want.   Enter your billing information, then your payment information.  Once you confirm your purchase, you will directly be taken to the Upgrade screen.  Make sure to save your receipt, as you will need the product key if you ever need to reinstall Windows on your computer. Upgrade with an existing product key If you purchased an Anytime Upgrade kit from a retailer, or already have a Full or Upgrade key for another edition of Windows 7, choose “Enter an upgrade key”. Enter your product key, and click Next.  If you purchased an Anytime Upgrade kit, the product key will be located on the inside of the case on a yellow sticker. The key will be verified as a valid key, and Anytime Upgrade will automatically choose the correct edition of Windows 7 based on your product key.  Click Next when this is finished. Continuing the Upgrade process Whether you entered a key or purchased a key online, the process is the same from here on.  Click “I accept” to accept the license agreement. Now, you’re ready to install your upgrade.  Make sure to save all open files and close any programs, and then click Upgrade. The upgrade only takes about 10 minutes in our experience but your mileage may vary.  Any available Microsoft updates, including ones for Office, Security Essentials, and other products, will be installed before the upgrade takes place. After a couple minutes, your computer will automatically reboot and finish the installation.  It will then reboot once more, and your computer will be ready to use!  Welcome to your new edition of Windows 7! Here’s a before and after shot of our desktop.  When you do an Anytime Upgrade, all of your programs, files, and settings will be just as they were before you upgraded.  The only change we noticed was that our pinned taskbar icons were slightly rearranged to the default order of Internet Explorer, Explorer, and Media Player.  Here’s a shot of our desktop before the upgrade.  Notice that all of our pinned programs and desktop icons are still there, as well as our taskbar customization (we are using small icons on the taskbar instead of the default large icons). Before, with the Windows 7 Starter background and the Aero Basic theme: And after, with Aero Glass and the more colorful default Windows 7 background.   All of the features of Windows 7 Home Premium are now ready to use.  The Aero theme was activate by default, but you can now customize your netbook theme, background, and more with the Personalization pane.  To open it, right-click on your desktop and select Personalize. You can also now use Windows Media Center, and can play-back DVD movies using an external drive. One of our favorite tools, the Snipping Tool, is also now available for easy screenshots and clips. Activating you new edition of Windows 7 You will still need to activate your new edition of Windows 7.  To do this right away, open the start menu, right-click on Computer, and select Properties.   Scroll to the bottom, and click “Activate Windows Now”. Make sure you’re connected to the internet, and then select “Activate Windows online now”. Activation may take a few minutes, depending on your internet connection speed. When it is done, the Activation wizard will let you know that Windows is activated and genuine.  Your upgrade is all finished!   Short version: the latest available version of MDX Studio can be downloaded from http://www.sqlbi.com/tools/mdx-studio/ Long version: Last week Stacia Misner twitted that the online version of MDX Studio was no longer available. It was hosted on http://mdx.mosha.com. It was a sad news, and it is also not good that nobody is maintaining the desktop version of MDX Studio. The latest release is the 0.4.14 and as I am writing it is still available on a SkyDrive link provided by Mosha Pasumansky, who wrote MDX Studio. Mosha does not work in Microsoft now and the entire BI community hopes that somebody will continue its work on this product. Unfortunately, it cannot be published on CodePlex because of some IP restrictions. Only bad news? Well, I hope no. The first good news is that MDX Studio also works with Analysis Services 2012 in Multidimensional mode. The second news is that, after having checked that we can do that, we created a web page on SQLBI web site to download the latest available release of MDX Studio. I hope it will be necessary to update it in the future, by now it is just a way to simplify the finding and download of this precious tool, and to grant that it will not disappear in case the current SkyDrive using to host the download would be discontinued, like it happened to the MDX Studio online version. Now a question to the BI Community: I know that there was some content available regarding tutorial on MDX Studio. I’d like to gather it and to put all in a single place. • Set Firefox to Be On Top of Other Windows

  Sometimes you need to keep a close watch on a website and have Firefox remain in view regardless of the other apps running. See how you can keep Firefox in constant view with the Always on Top extension. Before If you have a webpage that you like to watch throughout the day but have a very busy desktop then Firefox can get lost in all of the clutter. Note: You can read about the ReloadEvery extension here. Even with a widescreen monitor sometimes there is just not enough room to keep everything in easy view while you are working on something. Always on Top in Action Once you have installed the extension you will notice that a new Toolbar Button has automatically been added to your Navigation Toolbar. At the moment this is the only on/off switch for the extension. Clicking on the Toolbar Button will enable Always on Top and the button will change to a blue color to indicate its’ active status. Click on it again to disable it. Do anything that you like in the other windows…Firefox will still be the topmost window and easy to view. Conclusion The Always on Top extension was made to do just one thing and it does it very well…keeping your Firefox window on top. Being able to turn it on or off without digging through a bunch of menus adds that extra level of convenience. • Nautilus can't start due to segmentation fault

  Out of the blue I can't start nautilus today. When I try to open any directory it tries to open it, and sometimes I even can see the content of directory, but finally it's closed, after that there are no icons on desktop. When I tried to launch nautilus from terminal, I got: $ nautilus . • Unity 3D (with Nvidia driver) becomes very slow and laggy

  How can I prevent my Unity 3D desktop from becoming slow after a while, given that I have an Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 graphics in TwinView mode? The desktop starts out fast on login, but becomes slow / lagging / hesitant / high latency after a while, symptoms being spikes in CPU usage by /usr/bin/X whenever I cause any graphical activity with the mouse or keyboard (e.g. typing, changing tabs, dragging windows). The desktop remains slow even with all windows (except htop in Terminal) and extraneous processes killed. Detail: Changing tabs in Terminal takes about a second, and X spikes to 76% CPU. As I type into Firefox, X spikes to 95% CPU. Dragging Termiinal window, X goes to 70% CPU. Basically, every graphical action sends CPU usage of X through the roof. Device: Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 Driver package: binary driver nvidia-current-updates (280.13-0ubuntu5) Dual Monitors: Pair of DELL UltraSharp 1908FP in TwinView (X screen 2560x1024) OS: Fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 amd64 Desktop with all updates. Hardware: Dell Precision T5400 Workstation Pastebin of Xorg.0.log Pastebin of xorg.conf Pastebin of nvidia-xconfig -t output (easier to read than xorg.conf) Output of /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p: To obtain the following htop screenshow I typed "asdf" several times in in this text box, alt-tabbed to Terminal and took a screenshot of the high X CPU usage. This also happens when firefox is not running: Quadro NVS 290 has "No" thermal sensor according to sensors-detect: Next adapter: NVIDIA i2c adapter 0 at 2:00.0 (i2c-0) Do you want to scan it? (YES/no/selectively): Client found at address 0x50 Probing for `Analog Devices ADM1033'... No Probing for `Analog Devices ADM1034'... No P robing for `SPD EEPROM'... No Probing for `EDID EEPROM'... Yes (confidence 8, not a hardware monitoring chip) I tried the nouveau driver by disabling the nvidia-current-updates under Additional Drivers, but Ubuntu and xrandr -q fail to detect the second monitor. This may be issue 737349. Funniest thing is that Nouveau wiki says that XRandR 1.2 dual-monitor is supported so it should work with a second monitor.

  I have a WCF Service and a Main Lib1. Say, I have a Save Profile Service. WCF gets data (with predefined data contract) from client and pass the same to the Main Class Lib1, generate response and send it back to client. WCF Method : SaveProfile(ProfileDTO profile) Current Version 1.0 ProfileDTO have the following UserName Password FirstName DOB (In string yyyy-mm-dd) CreatedDate (In string yyyy-mm-dd) Next Version (V2.0) ProfileDTO have the following UserName Password FirstName DOB (In UnixTimeStamp) CreatedDate (In UnixTimeStamp) Version 3.0 ProfileDTO have the following (With change in UserName and Password length validation) UserName Password FirstName DOB (In UnixTimeStamp) CreatedDate (In UnixTimeStamp) In simple we have DataContract and Workflow change between each version 1. How do I name the methods in WCF Service and Main Class Lib1? 2. Do I have to go with any specific pattern for ease development and maintenance? 3. Do I have to have different endpoints for different version? In the above example I have a method named “SaveProfile”. Do I have to name the methods like “SaveProfile1.0”, “SaveProfile2.0”, etc. If that is the case when there is no change between Version “3.0” and “4.0” then there will difficult in maintenance. I’m looking for a approach that will help in ease maintenance
