  • HTML/Javascript: Is it possible to remember the filename from a fileupload field ONLY and then later

    - by Pieter Breed
I have a HTML file upload field from which I'm reading the file name of the file that the user specifies. The actual contents of the file is never uploaded. At a later stage, is it possible to construct a link using this file name information so that if the user clicks on this link, the original file is launched into a new browser window? If not, what are the reason for disallowing this behaviour? The purpose of such a feature is to store links to documents that are available on a mapped local drive or a network share.

  • Javascript looping only through defined properties of array. How?

    - by Beck
For example if i'm keeping array of references via id like that: if(typeof channel_boards[misc.channel_id] == 'undefined') { channel_boards[misc.channel_id] = $('<div class="channel" channel_id="'+misc.channel_id+'"></div>').appendTo('#board'); } And then i'm looping through array to find required reference. I'm looping through undefined properties as well. Is it possible to loop only through defined properties? for(i=0;i<channel_boards.length;i++) { if(channel_boards[i] != undefined) { if(channel_boards[i].attr('channel_id') != visible) {channel_boards[i].addClass('hidden_board');} else {channel_boards[i].removeClass('hidden_board');} } } Maybe i should change the way i'm storing references? Via object for example, but how i'll be able to find proper reference via id number.

  • How do I get the user info of a twitter user using javascript?

    - by user187809
    Using jquery's $.ajax function, I'm not able to parse the results. For example, I used it like this $.ajax({ url : "http://api.twitter.com/1/users/show.json?screen_name=techcrunch", dataType : "json", success : function(data) { // parse the JSON here }, error : function() { alert("Failure!"); }, }); This doesn't work. Do I need a callback function?

  • Javascript: How to calculate the exact position of the viewport?

    - by batmanfu
My problem is I need to get the position of the viewport relative to the extent of the entire document. I am only concerned with Firefox. My issue is that everything I have read says that: viewport height is window.innerHeight scroll position is window.pageYOffset document total height is document.height So, I would expect that if I scrolled to the bottom of a page that window.innerHeight + window.pageYOffset = document.height But it doesn't! Can someone please explain to me why this is?

  • Fade in an HTML element with raw javascript over 500 miliseconds.

    - by Juan C. Rois
Hello everybody, Once again I find myself stuck by something that I just don't understand. Any help would be appreciated. I'm working on a modal window, you click something and the background is masked and a modal window shows some content. I have a div with "display:none" and "opacity:0", and when the user triggers the modal, this div will overlay everything and have certain transparency to it. In my mind, what I need to do is: Set the opacity Perform a "for" loop that will check if the opacity is less than the desired value. Inside this loop, perform a "setInterval" to gradually increment the value of the opacity until it reaches the desired value. When the desired value has been reached, perform an "if" statement to "clearInterval". My code so far is as follows: var showMask = document.getElementById('mask'); function fireModal(){ showMask.style.opacity = 0; showMask.style.display = 'block'; var getCurrentOpacity = showMask.style.opacity; var increaseOpacity = 0.02; var finalOpacity = 0.7; var intervalIncrement = 20; var timeLapse = 500; function fadeIn(){ for(var i = getCurrentOpacity; i < finalOpacity; i++){ setInterval(function(){ showMask.style.opacity = i; }, intervalIncrement) } if(getCurrentOpacity == finalOpacity){ clearInterval(); } } fadeIn(); } As you all can guess, this is not working, all it does is set the opacity to "1" without gradually fade it in. Thanks in advance for your help.

  • What's the differenct between passing a function and the function call itself in javascript?

    - by Mingus Rude
In the application I'm building I'm polling for a status update and I have noticed that if the call is made as follows the timeout fires continuously: setTimeout($.get("http://localhost:8080/status", function(data) { UpdateStatus(data);}), 1000); While if use a function instead the timeout fires every 1000 ms: setTimeout(function() {$.get("http://localhost:8080/status", function(data) { UpdateStatus(data);})}, 1000); Why?

  • is it possible in javascript to create shortcuts with sequence like 123,345 instead of combo?

    - by frankB
I already used some script to implement the shortcuts in my web page but i was wondering if could be possible to associate some combination not syncronic like Ctrl+X but more like a sequence typing 1..2..3 or any other combination to execute a script... lets assume this example: you have a long list with numbers: you could type 3..5...6, so you can go to the item 356 passing trough the item 3 then 35 then 356 more or less like when you type while selecting a select box i hope it was clear, id not easy to explain...

  • Is it okay to rely on javascript for menu layout?

    - by Ryan
    I have a website template where I do not know the number of menu items or the size of the menu items that will be required. The js below works exactly the way I want it to, however this is the most js I've every written. Are there any disadvantages or potential problems with this method that I'm not aware of because I'm a js beginner? I'm currently manually setting the padding for each site. Thank you! var width_of_text = 0; var number_of_li = 0; // measure the width of each <li> and add it to the total with, increment li counter $('li').each(function() { width_of_text += $(this).width(); number_of_li++; }); // calculate the space between <li>'s so the space is equal var padding = Math.floor((900 - width_of_text)/(number_of_li - 1)); // add the padding the all but the first <li> $('li').each(function(index) { if (index !== 0) { $(this).css("padding-left", padding); } });

  • best way to store php data on a page for use with javascript/jquery?

    - by Haroldo
Ok, so im trying to work out the fastest way of storing data on my page without slowing the page load: I need to store information in the page to be later used by jquery. My page is an events page and i want to attach data to each event anchor. there are 100+ events to attach data to. The events anchors are created with a php loop, so i could create the data elements within this loop using either use un-semantic tags ie *rel="some_data"* create a jquery.data() for each iteration of the loop or i could run the loop again, separately, this time inside script tags with jquery.data(); would really appreciate any thoughts on this!

  • Drupal: Javascript + SWFObject: could you help me to understand why the video is not displaying in I

    - by Patrick
hi, I cannot solve this issue with the video at this link: http://www.sanstitre.ch/drupal/portfolio?tid[0]=66 It displays correctly in all browsers but not in IE8 or IE7. The IE8 debugger doesn't give me any error message. If I'm not wrong the video object is not added in IE. So, for some reason the Drupal module, jQuery Media and the library SWFObject are not adding it in IE browsers... any tip ? thanks

  • Should Javascript's "for in" construct iterate the length property?

    - by Eric
I'm making a bookmarklet, but I've encountered some wierd behaviour in IE8. The code causing the problem is this: var els = document.getElementById("my_id").getElementsByTagName("*"); for(var i in els) { alert(i+","+els[i]) } The first thing that is alerted is "length, n". This isn't the case in chrome: just in IE8. Interestingly, it seems to behave differently depending on whether the code goes in the console/address bar or the page itself. Is this standard behaviour?

  • Javascript: Taking the highest 2 numerical values out of a series of 4 possible values.

    - by Bodhi
What I'm trying to do is to take the highest two values out of 4 possible variables and add them together, while ignoring the lesser two values. My values will be anywhere between 1 and 5. So, for example, if I have Trait1, Trait2, Trait3 and Trait4 with the following assigned values: 3, 3, 2, 1, the script will pick up the 3 and the 3, but not the 2 and the 1. If I change the values around so that I have 4, 3, 1, 5, the script will pick up the 4 and the 5, but not the 3 and the 1. How would I go about doing this? Thank you in advance.

  • javascript: How to assign a function to an element.

    - by Tom
Hi, Here's what I want: I have an element in my html code, and I want to assign a function to the onClick event, depending on some conditions to be known down the road. For example <a href="" id = "element"><img .....> //other code </a> Then I want to do something like this <logic:equals some_condition> <script> var e = document.getObjectById("element"); e.onClick = my_function(); </script> </logic> But I cant get it working. Is there any special syntax? I've tried with e.onClick = my_function; e.onClick = function(){my_function();} Sadly i'm in IE 6. Thanks in advance.

  • When (and why) is {} undefined in a JavaScript console?

    - by JS_Riddler
In the console of both FF and Chrome, {} is considered undefined until explicitly evaluated: {}; // undefined ({}); // ? Object Actually, it's a bit less defined than undefined -- it's apparently bad syntax: {} === undefined; // SyntaxError: Unexpected token === {}.constructor; // SyntaxError: Unexpected token . But not if it's on the other side, in which case it's fine: "[object Object]" == {}.toString(); // true Or if it's not the first expression: undefined + undefined; // NaN {} + undefined; // NaN undefined + {}; // "undefined[object Object]" What gives?
