• XP Pro SP3: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL on hibernate

  Hey all I'm running XP Pro SP3 on a Late 2007-era 2.2Ghz Macbook. Unfortunately, it's recently started giving me a Blue Screen of Death when I try to hibernate it. It gives me the error "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL", and at the bottom says that it's in "hiber_atapi.sys". Most of the Googling I've done thus far turns up things referring to Windows Server 2003, which is obviously less than useful. Anyone know any way to fix this short of a full re-install?

• Software to manage "application profiles", which services are running, etc., on Windows?

  I am looking for a particular type of program. I use my computers in various "modes", like gaming, programming, just plain surfing, etc. What I'd like to find is a program that can help me manage these modes. For instance, while programming I might use SQL Server, but while gaming I don't want those services running, but perhaps I'd like Steam to run instead. Basically, the program type I'm looking for is a visual program that allow me to quickly switch modes, and when I do, the program would start and stop the necessary services and applications in order to leave one mode and enter another. I've looked at the programs related to startup management, and I haven't found one that lets me do what I want. At the moment I have batch files, but they're not very good at conveying problems or other things, I'd like a more visual program.

• Unknown redirect & slow page load

  Hello: I am hosting a website with GoDaddy's "Deluxe Linux" package. Of late, I noticed my website is loading nearly 10x slower. As I begin to debug, I noticed the following redirect occurring however nothing in my script would be causing it. It hits the URL, www.domain.com, then a 302 fires to www.domain.com/39dnda, then another 302 back to www.doamin.com ??? The first 302 is random each time... • Windows 7 Goes to Sleep in conflict with Power Option Setting

  My Del Dimension E521 running Windows 7 puts itself in sleep mode each night -- despite the fact that I have chosen a power option that specifies NEVER Each morning I find the monitor blank and I have to hit the power button on the PC at which point Windows "resumes". The system event log shows this: Source: Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power Date: 3/27/2010 3:21:10 AM Description: The system is entering sleep. Sleep Reason: System Idle My specific power options are: Turn off Display : 20 Minutes Put the computer to sleep : Never Is there some other setting coming into play here?

• Has there been a Firefox update recently?

  Trying again to ask a PROGRAMMING question because of the over-zealous closing off of what is equally a programming question before allowing the poster to clarify. The latest version of Firefox (v3.6.3) is breaking websites, mine included. I make heavy use of the Infragistic NetAdvantage controls. These, because of their heavy JavaScript reliance and occasional lack of quality control, tend to suffer through browser updates sometimes requiring a hotfix. So the question is... has there been a Firefox release recently that has either introduced a bug, tightening up of some standard, bug fix which might have broken a previous workaround (often the case) etc? I'm guessing around JavaScript but that's a guess hence the reason for asking a group of programmers...

• foswiki: use genPDF extension with topic templates?

  I have a foswiki installation for keeping ISO and other documents. I would like to create a PDF from each page. How can I create a topic template with different headers and footers for each topic template? More info: When a user creates a new topic, they can choose a template. I've made several templates for Functional and Programming specs. The functional spec and programming spec require different document numbers. I would like for the software engineers to be able to create a new topic, choose the template, then be able to generate a PDF from the wiki page, pulling the appropriate document number, and some other text into the headers and footers. I am not very familiar, and haven't been able to find any examples on doing this. Any help would be appreciated!

• Quicksilver quit launching Xcode

  Hi everyone, I've been launching Xcode from Quicksilver quite happily for weeks. Suddenly late yesterday, without changing either Xcode or Quicksilver, it started appearing like this: Screenshot There's no "open" option in the action list anymore. I rebooted with no joy. All my other applications launch. Xcode still launches from Spotlight. It just seems to be any app under /Developer/Applications. Any suggestions? cheers,Step

• Which e-reader for O'Reilly books?

  Most of my programming books are from O'Reilly. Several of them need to be updated, and I'm thinking of going for an e-reader this time. O'Reilly sell their e-books as a multi-format bundle (PDF, EPUB and Mobipocket (Kindle)). Has anyone done a comparison of the formats as for suitability on a small e-reader screen? In Europe, the Kindle DX is not (yet?) available, so I'm not sure whether a Kindle or a Sony (or some other reader) is best suited for these books. Disregarding other advantages/disadvantages of the different readers for now, which one in your opinion gives the best experience with O'Reilly books in particular (or programming books in general)?

Will be doing this on a Saturday night to, leases renew every 24 hours so by Monday morning all the machines will have valid DHCP leases with correct DNS servers. • Default soundcard per application in Vista?

  I use a USB headset during the day, then at night I use my speakers to watch video. I constantly have to use the windows playback list to change the default soundcard before I run the program I want. I did some google research but it doesn't seem to help much, mostly because of false positives. I tried to use "Sound Card Manager" but it didn't seem to work properly. Has anyone had any sucess dealing with the Vista sound system?

• LTSP keeping sessions active whilst turning off thin clients

  I'm using LTSP on a Ubuntu 10.04 64bit box with 8 thin clients. I would like to save power by automatically turning off the thin clients at night, but I would like to have the ability to resume the staff's session in the morning. Is it possible to keep a session running whilst turning off the LTSP thin client and resuming that session when you power up the thin client the next time? Could this work if you login to another thin client in the morning and resume your session?

• Turn on Laptop backlight without a keyboard shortcut

  I recently installed the latest drivers and my screen backlight turned off. The problem is that my Fn-F7 key combination doesn't work, so I can't turn it back on. I can see my screen at night if I hold a source of light next to the screen. So I can still do some trivial things with my laptop. Is there a way to turn the backlight on without using Fn-F7 key combination, either via the command line, or some other way?

• Adding Windows XP on a macbook pro running MacOS and Ubuntu

  My Macbook Pro already dual boots MacOSX or Ubuntu with ReFit. I would like to add Windows 7 in the mix. I can make enough space in the Mac partition to accomodate that, but just want to be sure the Windows installation is not going to wipe out anything and I will still be able to access both OS.   Hi We are running a Windows 2008 Small Business Server with Symantec Backup Exec. Last night the back up failed due to the Volume Shadow Copy service being unable to start. • Transferring dmg files from a PC to an Apple

  Hi all, I have dmg files on my computer that I need to put on my friends new macbook. When I try to put the files on an external hard drive it says that they are too large to transfer (each file is about 8 gigs). Just trying to figure out the best way to do this transfer. How to programmatically just turn off backlight on Acer Extensa 5220 laptop in Linux? It should work fast and should not touch image (unlike xset method). Ideally if I could rapidly switching backlight off and on emulate lower_than_minimum brightness level (ideally - to be hardly visible (but visible) at night).

• Problems after using migration assistant

  I had migrated from a Xenon Mac Pro to a late 2012 Mac mini, using Migration Assistant. Now, the Mac mini won't recognize PHP. I can't even open my user folder, through terminal neither. I was running Homebrew and PHP 5.4. The Mac mini came out of the box with PHP 5.3 what could be the source of the problem. Can someone confirm that it is a version caused problem or point me in the right direction?
