    Hello everybody, Once again I find myself stuck by something that I just don't understand. Any help would be appreciated. I'm working on a modal window, you click something and the background is masked and a modal window shows some content. I have a div with "display:none" and "opacity:0", and when the user triggers the modal, this div will overlay everything and have certain transparency to it. In my mind, what I need to do is: Set the opacity Perform a "for" loop that will check if the opacity is less than the desired value. Inside this loop, perform a "setInterval" to gradually increment the value of the opacity until it reaches the desired value. When the desired value has been reached, perform an "if" statement to "clearInterval". My code so far is as follows: var showMask = document.getElementById('mask'); function fireModal(){ showMask.style.opacity = 0; showMask.style.display = 'block'; var getCurrentOpacity = showMask.style.opacity; var increaseOpacity = 0.02; var finalOpacity = 0.7; var intervalIncrement = 20; var timeLapse = 500; function fadeIn(){ for(var i = getCurrentOpacity; i < finalOpacity; i++){ setInterval(function(){ showMask.style.opacity = i; }, intervalIncrement) } if(getCurrentOpacity == finalOpacity){ clearInterval(); } } fadeIn(); } As you all can guess, this is not working, all it does is set the opacity to "1" without gradually fade it in.   • Is it okay to rely on javascript for menu layout?

    I have a website template where I do not know the number of menu items or the size of the menu items that will be required. The js below works exactly the way I want it to, however this is the most js I've every written. Are there any disadvantages or potential problems with this method that I'm not aware of because I'm a js beginner? I'm currently manually setting the padding for each site.   • What is the best way to pass server side variables to JavaScript on the client side?

    Our application uses a lot of configuration options. Those options need to be reflected on the client side in the form of User preferences, site wide preferences, etc. Currently, we pass server side settings down to the client side in the form of JSON that is stored in custom attributes in the markup for a specific element (and no, our application currently doesn't worry about W3C validation). We then retrieve the data from the custom attribute, and parse it into a JSON object for use in script using jQuery. One drawback to this is referencing attributes on elements from within event handlers. I know this is frowned upon, as it can create circular references, and subsequently memory leaks. I would much prefer to use jQuery's data function, but you can't invoke this from the server side at page render time. What does everyone else do in this type of scenario?

    Ok, so im trying to work out the fastest way of storing data on my page without slowing the page load: I need to store information in the page to be later used by jquery. My page is an events page and i want to attach data to each event anchor. there are 100+ events to attach data to. The events anchors are created with a php loop, so i could create the data elements within this loop using either use un-semantic tags ie *rel="some_data"* create a jquery.data() for each iteration of the loop or i could run the loop again, separately, this time inside script tags with jquery.data(); would really appreciate any thoughts on this!

    I already used some script to implement the shortcuts in my web page but i was wondering if could be possible to associate some combination not syncronic like Ctrl+X but more like a sequence typing 1..2..3 or any other combination to execute a script... lets assume this example: you have a long list with numbers: you could type 3..5...6, so you can go to the item 356 passing trough the item 3 then 35 then 356 more or less like when you type while selecting a select box i hope it was clear, id not easy to explain...

  • Should Javascript's "for in" construct iterate the length property?

    I'm making a bookmarklet, but I've encountered some wierd behaviour in IE8. The code causing the problem is this: var els = document.getElementById("my_id").getElementsByTagName("*"); for(var i in els) { alert(i+","+els[i]) } The first thing that is alerted is "length, n". This isn't the case in chrome: just in IE8. Interestingly, it seems to behave differently depending on whether the code goes in the console/address bar or the page itself. Is this standard behaviour?

    hi, I cannot solve this issue with the video at this link: http://www.sanstitre.ch/drupal/portfolio?tid[0]=66 It displays correctly in all browsers but not in IE8 or IE7. The IE8 debugger doesn't give me any error message. If I'm not wrong the video object is not added in IE. So, for some reason the Drupal module, jQuery Media and the library SWFObject are not adding it in IE browsers... any tip ? thanks

    What I'm trying to do is to take the highest two values out of 4 possible variables and add them together, while ignoring the lesser two values. My values will be anywhere between 1 and 5. So, for example, if I have Trait1, Trait2, Trait3 and Trait4 with the following assigned values: 3, 3, 2, 1, the script will pick up the 3 and the 3, but not the 2 and the 1. If I change the values around so that I have 4, 3, 1, 5, the script will pick up the 4 and the 5, but not the 3 and the 1. How would I go about doing this? Thank you in advance.

    I pretty much stated what I have to ask. But is taking all of your external .js files and putting them before the closing body tag on your master pages okay on an asp.net website? I'm just going off of what yslow and google speed have been showing. I can't combine these javascripts, so I'm trying to load them "after page load", but doing so makes them useless; some of my jquery things don't work. I moved my .js files above the opening body tag, and they work. What am I doing wrong? And what could I do to load my .js files after page load? Thanks for any advice anybody can offer!

  • Using Javascript to detect the bottom of the window and ignoring all events when a request is loading

    I have an anonymous function to detect the user has scrolled to the bottom of the window. Inside of the anonymous function, I have a call to a database that takes a while to complete. var allowing_more = 1; $(window).scroll(function() { if (allowing_more == 1){ if ($(window).scrollTop() + $(window).height() == $(document).height()) { allowing_more = 0; //query allowing_more = 1; } } }); In this time, if the user scrolls to the bottom of the window again, it seems a queue is made holding the occurences the user scrolled to the bottom of the window while the query was loading. Upon completing of the query, these occurences are then executed. I have a boolean statement to detect if the anonymous function is accepting more query requests but this seems to be ignored. Is there some sort of way to ignore an anonymous function temporarily and re-enable it?
