Mirroring Ubuntu on several systems in a computer lab

I am working in a new refugee school where the only Internet service available is a slow satellite connection. We are about to set up a computer lab (already have desktop systems and am about to install Ubuntu on them). I'm a newbie when it comes to Linux, but it seems a better alternative than pirated copies of Windows. I'd like to set up one Ubuntu system, and then mirror that system on perhaps ten to twenty other systems (all of which would be on an ethernet network). I expect to have an internet connection on the one system that I set up, but then it may be difficult to have enough bandwidth to go through all the same steps on the other ten systems. Can I set up the other ten or twenty computers to get all of their updates/upgrades/configuration from one master system? Can I also set things up so that students cannot change the configuration, install new programs, etc.? Appreciate any help you can give. -- Harvey

How can I change the default location of content directories (eg Pictures, Templates, Music) in my home folder?

I have multiple users on my home desktop. I am content with most of the default user directories, however I would like to make one change. I would like to setup a common directory for Music (ie /home/common/Music/) that is writable to all users and Nautilus/Dolphin/whatever recognizes as the user's Music directory. I know that it would involve changing the xdg user directory setup, but everything I see points that it is relative to the user's $HOME. Is there a way I can specify an absolute path?

Compiz stop working

I'm on a laptop sony vaio, vng-nw330f with ubuntu 11.10. One day I used my computer normally, I shutdown and the other day when I turn on it again, all was different. Compiz effects is not working at all, it doesn't matter what plugin (from ccsm) i enable or disable, nothings happens, nothings changes. I tried next commands: unity --reset unity --reset-icons sudo rm -rf .config .gnome .gnome2 .gnome2_private .compiz .icons .fonts .nautilus .themes .qt .local (from my home directory) gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz-1 I try reinstalling compiz (I remove compiz from software center and installed it again). I have just a couple of weeks using ubuntu, I'm not sure if exist a desktop call it unity 3d, but I think that it's missing. I want the graphics interface of ubuntu 11.10 by default.

lock screen before hibernating [12.04]

So when i hibernate my laptop the screen doesn't lock automatically. To solve this if changed /etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh to contain: su - myUsername -c "gnome-screensaver-command -l" sudo pm-hibernate exit 0 When running this file from a command line it works as intended (ie, lock the screen and then hibernate). Unfortunately, when pressing the power button, it still just hibernates without locking the screen -what am I missing? EDIT: I've added the line whoami>>~/Desktop/test.txt to verify which user is executing the /etc/acpi/powerbtn.shscript. When pressing the power button, the file test.txt is created, but is empty. From this i conclude that the script is in fact being called when pressing the power button. What i do not understand is how the output of whoami can be empty...

Reinstall Ubuntu keeping my data intact

I have recently upgraded my desktop OS from ubntu 12.04 to 12.10 (complete reinstall). Before the switch i made a list of all programs installed on my Ubuntu 12.04. sudo dpkg --get-selections > file After that i reinstalled Ubuntu 12.10 and when all was done i performed the following command: sudo dpkg --set-selections < file sudo apt-get dselect-upgrade Here is when the problems start, I get several warnings like this when performing the commands above: dpkg: warning: package not in database at line xxx and many of the programs is not installed. I don't know what the line means. I have serched the web and it seems that I'm not the only one suffering from this but I have not find any solution that worked for me. Java 7 Adoption at 79%

According to a recent blog post from the cloud hosting company Jelastic, Java 7 adoption on their platform is now at 79%. While this is a single data point and should not be read too broadly, it does match other indicators we have that Java 7 is picking up, such as uptake among Oracle middleware customers, download statistics and online activity. The spike in adoption in April coincided with the release of JDK 7 Update 4. This is in line with our expectations since that release added Mac OS X support as well as java.com moving to Java 7 as the default download for end-users; two events that marked the maturity of Java 7 to the community. Since the original release of Java 7, Oracle has shipped 7 update releases, added ports to Mac OSX and Linux/ARM and expanded JavaFX to all common desktop platforms.

No Launcher, Messed Resolution and Artifacts!

I installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my desktop, and it boot up ok, but I was having some artifacts, so I read somewhere that I needed nvidia drivers, I downloaded them, along with compiz (I enjoy the nice effects), but after that, when I rebooted the computer, the resolution was all messes up, and now I can't access anything because there is no launcher! I inserted Ubuntu CD, booted from the CD, the resolution was fine and eerything was OK, so I repaired the installation, but after restarting the computer it was all messed up again! Please help me! I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 on a Core i7 and a GTX 460 + GTX 280! How Ubuntu looks as soon as I turn on my computer on:

Obtaining a HBITMAP/HICON from D2D Bitmap

Is there any way to obtain a HBITMAP or HICON from a ID2D1Bitmap* using Direct2D? I am using the following function to load a bitmap: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd756686%28v=vs.85%29.aspx The reason I ask is because I am creating my level editor tool and would like to draw a PNG image on a standard button control. Upgrading to Gnome 3.4 breaks Unity and gnome-shell

I have upgraded my gnome shell to 3.4 in Ubuntu 11.10 through sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ricotz/testing sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3 sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade sudo apt-get install gnome-shell But it broke my system. Gnome shell is completely broken - When I login it just shows desktop wallpaper and nothing else. And importantly Unity is also broken. Attaching the screenshot Some main issues 1)Two menus are appearing now - Global menu as well as application menu 2)Icons on top-right panel are appearing weirdly 3)My Default Ambiance Theme also got screwed. Instead of black color menus, I am seeing white color menus. How do I fix them? Or Do I have an option to revert back to original settings or will reinstalling Unity/Gnome Shell helps ?

How do I install the old sensors-applet package?

I want to install sensors-applet onto my Ubuntu 12.04 computer. The instructions on this (and other) webpages says to enter this command in a command terminal: sudo apt-get install sensors-applet This is a gnome applet and gnome isn't exactly obscure. Why can sensors-applet package not be found? Before you say "no", note that I was able to execute "gnome-panel" to add a bar/panel along the bottom of my desktop, add 8 cpu-frequency applets to the bar (one per CPU core), and add gnome-panel to my startup applications. So I've already done the basics, and believe all I need now is to be able to download and install the sensors-applet to have that temperature applet available on the panel too. See here.

Black screen after installing ubuntu 11.10 on new pc

Could anyone troubleshoot me please; After installing ubuntu on my fresh desktop, the ubuntu loading screen shortly appears and then I get a black screen and cannot access the login screen. When booting in failsafe modus, i get a message that ubuntu failed to load failsafe video drivers. I have a radeon 6850 video card and am able to start ubuntu live session. So I guess it loads the wrong drivers upon booting from hd. I remember a file in which you could change which drivers it should load, but forgot the exact location. Could this solve my problem (or another solution)

With the release of WebCenter Content PS5, a new folder architecture called 'Framework Folders' was introduced. This is meant to replace the folder architecture of 'Folders_g'. While the concepts of a folder structure and access to those folders through Desktop Integration Suite remain the same, the underlying architecture of the component has been completely rewritten. One of the main goals of the new folders is to scale better at large volumes and remove the limitations of 1000 content items or sub-folders within a folder. Along with the new architecture, it has a new look and a few additional features have been added. One of those features are Query Folders. These are folders that are populated simply by a query rather then literally putting items within the folders. This is something that the Library has provided, but it always took an administrator to define them through the Web Layout Editor. How do I resolve "No JSON object could be decoded" on mythbuntu live CD?

I have been running a MythTV frontend on my laptop for some time against a MythTV backend installed in Linux Mint 12 on another computer, and everything works fine. Now, I'm trying out the Mythbuntu Live CD (12.04.1 32-bit) on the laptop, to turn it into a dedicated front end. It's connecting to the network just fine, and I can see my server. When I click on the frontend icon on the desktop, it asks me for the security code, which I've verified against mythtv-setup on the server. However, when I test that code, it shows the error message "No JSON object could be decoded". I've looked in the control center to see if there's something else I should be setting up. The message above implies to me that it can't find the server, but I can find no place in the control center to tell it where to find my myth backend, which I find a little odd. Does the live CD not work against a backend server on another machine?

Adding a DLL to the GAC in Windows 7

I recently created a DLL and I wanted to reference it from a project I was developing in Visual Studio. In previous versions of Windows, doing so was simply a matter of dropping the DLL file in the C:\Windows\assembly folder. That would add the DLL to the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) and make it accessible in Visual Studio. However, as is often the case, Window 7 is different. Even if you have Administrator privileges on your machine, you still do not have permission to drop a file in the assembly folder. Undaunted, I thought about using the old DOS command line utility gacutil.exe. Microsoft developed the tool as part of the .Net framework, and it is available in the Windows SDK Framework Tools. If you have never used gacutil.exe before, you can find out everything you ever wanted to know but were afraid to ask here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ex0ss12c(v=vs.80).aspx . Unfortunately, if you do not have the Windows SDK loaded on your development machine, you will need to install it to use gacutil, but it is relatively quick and painless, and the framework tools are very useful. Look here for your latest SDK: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/search.aspx?q=Windows%20SDK . After installing the SDK, I tried installing my DLL to the GAC by running gacutil from a DOS command line: That’s odd. Microsoft is shipping a tool that cannot be executed even with Administrator rights? Let me stop here and say that I am by no means a Windows security expert, so I actually did contact my system administrators, and they were not sure how to fix the problem….there must be a super administrator access level, but it isn’t available to your average developer in my company. The solution outlined here is working within the boundaries of a normal windows Administrator. So, now the hacker in me bubbles to the surface. What if I were to create a simple BAT file containing the gacutil command? It’s so crazy it just might work! Ugh! I was starting to think this would never work, but then I realized that simply executing a batch program did not change my level of access. Typically in Windows 7, you would select the “Run As Administrator” option to temporarily act as an administrator for the purpose of executing a process. However, that option is not available for BAT files run from the command line. SOLUTION: Create a desktop shortcut to execute the BAT file, which in turn will execute the line command…..are you still with me? I created a shortcut and pointed it to my batch file. Theoretically, all I need to do now is right-click on the shortcut and select “Run As Administrator” and we’re good, right? Well, kinda. If you notice the syntax of my BAT file, the name of the DLL is passed in as a parameter. Therefore, I either have to hard-code the file name in the BAT program (YUCK!!), or I can leave the parameter and drag the DLL file to the shortcut and drop it. Sweet, drag-and-drop works for me…..but if I use the drag-and-drop method, there is no way for me to right-click and select “Run As Administrator”. That is not a problem…..I simply have to adjust the properties of the shortcut I created and I am in business. I Right-clicked on the shortcut and select “Properties”. Under the “Shortcut” tab there is an “Advanced” button…..I clicked it. All I needed to do was check the “Run As Administrator” box: In summary, what I have done is create a BAT file to execute a command line utility, gacutil.exe. Then, rather than executing the BAT file from the command line, I created a desktop shortcut to run it and set the shortcut properties to “Run As Administrator”. This will effectively mean I am executing the command line utility with Administrator privileges. Pretty sneaky. Now, when I drag the DLL file over to the shortcut, it starts the BAT file and adds the DLL to the assembly cache. I created another BAT file to remove a DLL from the GAC in case the need should arise. The code for that is: Give it a try. I can’t imagine why updating the GAC has been made into such a chore in Windows 7. Hopefully there is a service pack in the works that will give developers the functionality they had in Windows XP, but in the meantime, this workaround is extremely useful.

Removal of libsound2 file causes graphics loss

I was trying to install skype on ubuntu 12.10 desktop. but it was giving some error related to libsound2:i386 file. to overcome this problem i removed file libsound2 thinking that will install it later. but it removes all the graphics from my system. after removal of the file system started to give error that system is running in low graphics mode. I tried to install libsound2 file again but couldn't. After it i have upgraded the release of my ubuntu version using command do-release-upgrade think that it will install the missing file. But still there are no graphics on the system. I am using Dell Inspiron 15 . Please help me to tell that how can i get the graphics of system back.

Beginner Guide to User Styles for Firefox

While the default styles for most websites are nice there may be times when you would love to tweak how things look. See how easy it can be to change how websites look with the Stylish Extension for Firefox. Note: Scripts from Userstyles.org can also be added to Greasemonkey if you have it installed. Getting Started After installing the extension you will be presented with a first run page. You may want to keep it open so that you can browse directly to the Userstyles.org website using the link in the upper left corner. In the lower right corner you will have a new Status Bar Icon. If you have used Greasemonkey before this icon works a little differently. It will be faded out due to no user style scripts being active at the moment. You can use either a left or right click to access the Context Menu. The user style script management section is also added into your Add-ons Management Window instead of being separate. When you reach the user style scripts homepage you can choose to either learn more about the extension & scripts or… Start hunting for lots of user style script goodness. There will be three convenient categories to get you jump-started if you wish. You could also conduct a search if you have something specific in mind. Here is some information directly from the website provided for your benefit. Notice the reference to using these scripts with Greasemonkey… This section shows you how the scripts have been categorized and can give you a better idea of how to search for something more specific. Finding & Installing Scripts For our example we decided to look at the Updated Styles Section”first. Based on the page number listing at the bottom there are a lot of scripts available to look through. Time to refine our search a little bit… Using the drop-down menu we selected site styles and entered Yahoo in the search blank. Needless to say 5 pages was a lot easier to look through than 828. We decided to install the Yahoo! Result Number Script. When you do find a script (or scripts) that you like simply click on the Install with Stylish Button. A small window will pop up giving you the opportunity to preview, proceed with the installation, edit the code, or cancel the process. Note: In our example the Preview Function did not work but it may be something particular to the script or our browser’s settings. If you decide to do some quick editing the window shown above will switch over to this one. To return to the previous window and install the user style script click on the Switch to Install Button. After installing the user style the green section in the script’s webpage will actually change to this message… Opening up the Add-ons Manager Window shows our new script ready to go. The script worked perfectly when we conducted a search at Yahoo…the Status Bar Icon also changed from faded out to full color (another indicator that everything is running nicely). Conclusion If you prefer a custom look for your favorite websites then you can have a lot of fun experimenting with different user style scripts. HD Video on Pandaboard ES

I am running Ubuntu 11.10 on my Pandaboard ES. I attempted to playback a 720p / 1080p video. In both cases, the videos were highly jittery and the audio seemed to be plagued with something that seemed to be white noise (sounds like white noise, but it definitely is not white noise). I was using VLC media player for playback and was running XFCE4 as the desktop ewnvironment. The system monitor graph indicates both the CPU cores running ~100%. Lower resolution videos seemed to play without problems. How do I play 1080 / 720 HD videos on pandaboard? Thanks in advance.

Automatically select headphones when plugged in

When I plug headphones into my desktop computer, they are not automatically selected for output, instead all sound still goes through my S/PDIF output to the stereo. The headphones alternative is added in the sound settings, and I have to manually select it as output device. $ cat /proc/asound/pcm 00-00: ALC898 Analog : ALC898 Analog : playback 1 : capture 1 00-01: ALC898 Digital : ALC898 Digital : playback 1 00-02: ALC898 Analog : ALC898 Analog : capture 2 I have done a Google search, as well as search askubuntu.com, but none of the answers in the hits I found seems to help. Also, after listening with the headphones and then unplug them, the previous output is not automatically selected, so I have no sound at all then. I have to manually select the correct output in the settings.

Is "no installation" software a good thing?

I am building an application that will, hopefully, be used by developers. To be appealing to developers I want it to be lightweight, small in size, and with no installation (e.g. xcopy). I trust more an application without installation to not put garbage in my registry, to be lightweight etc. My friend thinks the opposite: An installer puts shortcuts on the desktop / menu for me, it ensures cleanup via the uninstaller, and seems more official. I'm curious - what is everyone's take on this?
