• How to Implement AutoSize

  I'm trying to figure out a good way to auto-size a Rectangle that has text drawn inside of it. I basically want the size to have a ratio of width/height and then "grow" according to that ratio to fit the text. I've looked at Graphics.MeasureString but I don't think it does what I'm looking for (maybe it does and I'm just using it wrong). I don't want to specify a specific width of the rectangle to be drawn, instead I want to say find the smallest width/height to fit this text but the found rectangle must have some specific ratio of width and height. This doesn't have to be specific to C#, any idea for solving this problem I'm sure can be mapped to C#. Thanks!

• Using TDD: "top down" vs. "bottom up"

  Since I'm a TDD newbie, I'm currently developing a tiny C# console application in order to practice (because practice makes perfect, right?). I started by making a simple sketchup of how the application could be organized (class-wise) and started developing all domain classes that I could identify, one by one (test first, of course). In the end, the classes have to be integrated together in order to make the application runnable, i.e. placing necessary code in the Main method which calls the necessary logic. However, I don't see how I can do this last integration step in a "test first" manner. I suppose I wouldn't be having these issues had I used a "top down" approach. The question is: how would I do that? Should I have started by testing the Main() method? If anyone could give me some pointers, it will be much appreciated.

  Hi people, Is there a friendlier way to get an instance of FontMetrics than FontMetrics fm = Graphics.getFontMetrics(Font); I hate this way because of the following example: If you want to create in a game a menu and you want all the menuitems in the center of the screen you need fontmetrics. But, mostly, menuitems are clickable. So I create an array of Rectangles and all the rectangles fits around the items, so when the mouse is pressed, I can simply use for (int i = 0; i < rects.length; i++) if (rects[i].contains(mouseX, mouseY)) { ... } But to create the rects I also need FontMetrics for their coordinates. So this mean that I have to construct all my rectangles in the paint-method of my menu. So I want a way to get the FontMetrics so I can construct the Rectangles in a method called by the constructor.   I have vast programming knowledge; C++/C#/ActionScript/ASM/PHP..... so learning the language of SilverLight itself isn't of an issue. To keep long story short, when asking this question I'm asking it as a developer who's coming from Flash world - great graphics/sounds/media support, fully cross-platform, ability to combine several SWFs within a "movie" (which also implies code reusability). A Flash developer have pretty much freedom. What are most important things that i must know in order to jump into silverlight development? I've recently started learning web programming. I really like SVG + CSS, and was wondering -- why do people not design entire webpages in SVG? Context SVG provides beautiful primitive: quadratic + cubic bezier curves; lines + filling -- all as vector graphics SVG provides text SVG provides affine transformations Questions Are there examples of people designing entire websites as a giant SVG file? If not, what the limitations? Are there performance hits when using SVG primitives as opposed to divs/tables?

• Adding behaviour to a set of classes

  I have defined an Event class: Event and all the following classes inherit from Event: SportEventType1 SportEventType2 SportEventType3 SportEventType4 Right now I will only have SportEvents but I don't know if in the future I'll want some other kind of events that doesn't even have anything to do with Sports. Later, I will want to draw some graphics with info taken from Events, and the drawing logic can be a bit complex. But, for the moment, I think I shouldn't think of how the drawing will be done and I believe that maybe it'd be better if that drawing part was not put as an integral part of the Event/SportEventX class chain. I am looking for solutions for this problem. I know I could just make Event have an instance variable(attribute, for the java crowds) pointing to something as an IDrawInterface, but that would make the Event class "assume" it will be later used for drawing. I would like to make the Event class oblivious to this if possible. Thanks!

• Controling the visibility of a Bitmap in .NET

  Hi everyone, I am trying to create this simple application in c#: when the user double clicks on specific location in the form, a little circle will be drawn. By one click, if the current location is marked by a circle - the circle will be removed. I am trying to do this by simply register the MouseDoubleClick and MouseClick events, and to draw the circle from a .bmp file the following way: private void MouseDoubleClick (object sender, MouseEventArgs e) { Graphics g = this.CreateGraphics(); Bitmap myImage = (Bitmap)Bitmap.FromFile("Circle.bmp"); g.DrawImage(myImage, e.X, e.Y); } My problem is that I dont know how to make the circle unvisible when the user clicks its location: I know how to check if the selected location contains a circle (by managing a list of all the locations containig circles...), but I dont know how exactly to delete it. Another question: should I call the method this.CreateGraphics() everytime the user double-clicks a location, as I wrote in my code snippet, or should I call it once on initialization?

  Hi! I'm searched adobe and android developers sites, but can't find any details on this. Is it possible to use Flash as a part of my app? E.g. like a widget/GUI element? Or it's integrated in browser only and can't be simple accessible? I know, Adobe AIR apps are supported as standalone .apk. So it must be some API/SDK (from Google) to connect with Flash player.   Hi, We are doing the following in the Application_Start (Global.ascx.cs) for a WCF Service hosted by IIS 7.0 (integrated pipeline). var mapperConfigurations = AppDomain.CurrentDomain.GetAssemblies() .SelectMany(a => a.GetExportedTypes().Where(t => typeof (IMapperConfiguration).IsAssignableFrom(t) && t.IsClass)) .ToList(); The web-service has 8-10 assemblies in its bin folder and each of them have multiple implementations of IMapperConfiguration. After an IIS Reset, no mapper configurations are found (found this using debug.write). However, this behaviour is inconsistent and at other times all implementations of IMapperConfiguration are found. When exactly does IIS load assemblies and what is wrong with this code? Thanks

• What can cause the language bar to disappear in a win32 application?

  When I run my Win32 application the Windows language bar (which is visible in all other applications) disappears after about 5 seconds. It reappears if I quit my application or alt-tab to a different application. If I alt-tab back into my application, it disappears again after five seconds. The switch key doesn't work either. It seems as if the system somehow has concluded that my application doesn't "support" the language bar. Is there something I need to do to for the language bar to be enabled? Or something I shouldn't be doing that can cause it to disappear? The application has a single custom window (where I draw DirectX graphics). I've looked through the arguments to CreateWindow and RegisterClass as well as the window messages that I handle (instead of passing to DefWindowProc) but nothing seems to be directly related to the language bar. I've only tested this on Windows 7.

• How to know when the user touches the OK button of the last StoreKit alert "Thank you. Your purchase

  I have integrated "In App Purchase" in a game to let the user unlock more levels. Everything works fine, but I have a little problem with the last alert "Thank You. Your purchase was successful. [OK]". My program gets informed that the transaction was successfully completed before this last alert pops up and so my game starts running again - then the alert comes up, annoying the user. I would like to wait with my game running until the user touches the "OK" button, but since it is an alert from StoreKit I have no idea when this happens or how I could catch it. I don't want to create another dialog (this time my own, therefor under my control) below the alert, just asking for touching "OK" again - would be a bad user experience. Anybody have any ideas?

• Fitting place names into map shapes

  I'm drawing shapes using GDI+ using a list of lat/lon floats, and I need to place the name of the place within the borders of the polygon. Simply centering the text in the bounding rectangle doesn't work for irregular shapes. I have the text and the font so I can get the size of the rectangle that the text will need to fit in, but at that point I'm stuck. This seems like a common problem that all mapping software solves, as well as the kind of thing you would find in an algorithm or computer graphics textbook. So, given a list of floats for a polygon and a rectangle, is there a way to get the best possible point to place the text, using: 1) GDI+; 2) SQL Server Geospatial; or 3) c# code (or c, pseudocode, etc)

• Bootstrap jquery methods Magento's prototype lib

  Wonder if anyone has had this issue. I've integrated Bootstrap nicely into a Magento theme I'm building, all good. That is, until I try using the accordian functions. There seems to be an issue with the code finding the Prototype Libs Methods instead of jQuery's. I've tried the usual fixes, $ - jQuery and no conflict but it only works when I disable the prototype lib - which obviously is not good. Anyone out there come across this and can advise me on a work round? At the moment I'm resigned to using Scriptaculous for the accordian.

• Interactive Charts for web application

  We are working on a web based application (implemented in JAVA) on commodity prices and one part of it is interactive charting. I provide a simplified example here. We have a table in Mysql database where we have information on commodity prices in US states and counties. One aspect of the application is to create interactive plots based on user choice. For example, if the user needs to see the price density in Oregon and Linn county then she chooses it from the menu in a webpage and it is rendered on fly with accompanying quantile information in a table. As the user changes state and county these plots and table change on fly.For our computational need we are using R (and use rjava to integrate it to our web application) and I know that if interactivity is not an issue this is a piece of cake in ggplot2, but I am not aware of any interactive version of R graphics framework (like lattice, ggplot2). We are exploring google visualization API but I am not sure we can have the statistical power we need in some of the plots.Please help.

• Java or C# + XNA for some simple animations?

  I want to make a program that will involve some faces with various facial expressions. They will change from one facial expression to another based on their "mood" as influenced by user input. I know some java but I have done pretty much nothing with graphics. A friend tells me that it will be easier to do this in C# with XNA than to do it in java. I have about a month to do this, so I was hoping you folks would help me make a decision. Would I be better off figuring out how to do this in java, or learning C# and XNA and doing it in C#? Is it so much easier to do this in C# that it would be quicker to learn C# than to struggle with doing it in java? Will it probably come out looking much better if it is in C#?
