    Is there a way to simplify the process of adding an overloaded method in C# using VS2005? In VB6, I would have just added an Optional parameter the function, but in C# do I have to have to type out a whole new method with this new parameter?

    I migrate my winforms crawler app to a asp.net web app and would like to know how to implement the background worker thread that I use for very long searches? Another posting mentioned asynchronous pages but I am not sure if this would work or how to apply it. The search function that would run can sometimes run for a few days and I would like the user to have the option to perform other functions still. Can this happen?

  • Best way to fix an out-of-sync TFS workspace after a back-up/restore

    Wednesday I had to restore from a back-up image I made on Monday. At the time of the snapshot I had about 20 files modified, which I later checked in, and more, on Tuesday. Now that I am back to a snapshot from Monday morning, my workspace has all of these files checked-out or added, etc. even my check-in comments and work-item associations. But I already did that check-in on Tuesday. I'm thinking I will shelve all the pending changes (just in-case), and then just undo all changes, and get latest (specific version). And I should be back to good. Any cautions or suggestions? (TFS 2008, VS2010)

  • Cant install .NET application in Clients PC

    Hello all, My client's PC runs Windows 7 Ultimate with .netframework 4 client profile. I am unable to install my application developed in VS2008. I tried uninstalling .NET Framework 4 From his PC and running the Clean up tool provided by Microsoft. But still I am unable to install it successfully. It provides Error 1001. I tried running the program as administrator. I also tried to Turn on .net 3.5 feature from add or remove program. Thanks in advance. :) Edit: The error what i get is shown here. Furthermore, I have confirmed that it is a 32bit processor and i run x86 release version of setup The application is developed in a Windows 7 OS with .NET Framework 3.5 I have installed this application in 7 PCs which have .NET 3.5 installed in them and having OS Windows XP,Vista and Windows 7; and all are working fine. In clients PC, when I try to install .NET 3.5 again, the installer starts but then it disappears suddenly without doing anything I have tried turning on .NET 3.5 framework feature from control panel Program and Features. I have tried running the program as Administrator I have tried setting the application setup in Windows XP and Vista compatible mode. But still the issue persists. Thanks :)

    We're trailing the use of the built in bug tracking, and have written some integration into our helpdesk software that allows for escalation via workitems. One thing I haven't found out how to do, is to merge all changes associated with a work item (say to go from dev branch to main) - I appreciate you can double click on a changeset in the merge dialog to view if it is associated with a workitem, and also that I can select individual changesets, and groups of adjacent changesets; but there doesn't appear to be any way to merge changes by workitem?

    I am exploring a structure of folders with C# projects such as the following: Projects ProjectA ProjectB ProjectC ProjectD Scattered around in the same folders as the .csproj files, there are several solution (.sln) files. Is there a fast way to find all the solutions that contain ProjectD.vsproj? I can open them one by one and see what they contain, but I would like a feature such as "find all the solutions containing this project".

  • Can you step into specific properties in VS 2010?

    I know that you can either step into every property or not step into every property, but I would really like to be able to step into a specific property, and not the rest. Is this possible? (I also know I can use keyboard commands, but I'm asking if there's a more permanent solution.) I have a lot of properties and my setters do important things, so it's silly to step over them, but most of my getters are pointless.   • backgroundworkers or threadpools

    I am trying to create an app that allows multiple search requests to occur whilst maintaining use of the user interface to allow interaction. For the multiple search requests, I initially only had one search request running with user interaction still capable by using a backgroundworker to do this. Now I need to extend these functions by allowing more search functions and basically just queueing them up. I am not sure whether to use multiple backgroundworkers or use the threadpool since I want to be able to know the progress of each search job at any time.

    I have a profiling issue - imagine I have the following code... void main() { well_written_function(); badly_written_function(); } void well_written_function() { for (a small number) { highly_optimised_subroutine(); } } void badly_written_function() { for (a wastefully and unnecessarily large number) { highly_optimised_subroutine(); } } void highly_optimised_subroutine() { // lots of code } If I run this under vtune (or other profilers) it is very hard to spot that anything is wrong. All the hotspots will appear in the section marked "// lots of code" which is already optimised. The badly_written_function() will not be highlighted in any way even though it is the cause of all the trouble. Is there some feature of vtune that will help me find the problem? Is there some sort of mode whereby I can find the time taken by badly_written_function() and all of its sub-functions?

    I'm working on creating a date/time user control in WPF using C# 2008. My first user control. I'm also using Matthew MacDonald's book, "Pro WPF in C# 2008". In that book he strongly recommended creating a user control using the WPF Custom Control Library project template; so I followed his suggestion. I've finished writing the code which would go into what I think of as the code-behind file. Now I'm ready to write the XAML. The only problem is, I just discovered there is no corresponding .xaml file? So, I don't get why using a WPF Custom Control Library project is better, or prefered, when writing a user control?

  • Why are types found on an imported namepace but not on a fully qualified namespace after retargeting the framework?

    We've just re-targeted a VB.NET project from .Net 2.0 to 3.5. Various framework types are now missing from our project. Wherever the type is referenced using a fully qualified namespace it's missing. If the relevant namespace is imported for the type; it's found. For example, this doesn't find the type Object, with compiler error "System.Object is not defined.": Public Class Foo Inherits System.Object End Class However, this works ok: Imports System Public Class Foo Inherits [Object] End Class I've already tried re-opening the solution with no success.

    So I have a number of namedRanges in an excel worksheet. I would like to use these to fill in comboboxes on a user form in the same WorkBook. I have tried: cboMember.DataSource = Globals.Sheet1.MemberRange.Value No error is given but the combo is blank. Does anybody have any ideas? I'm trying to use VSTO for VS 2008 on an excel 2003 work book.

    I have "Selected Text" color set to a default value in vs 2010 RGB 51,153,253. But really in text editor it is RGB 173,214,255 that is slightly darker. The same things are with some other colors, e.g. Resharper Dead Code. What can it be a problem and how should I solve it?

    I have an ASPX page (with VB Codebehind). I would like to extend the GridView class to show the header / footer when no rows are returned. I found a C# example online (link) (source). However, I cannot convert it to VB because it uses typed events (which are not legal in VB). I have tried several free C# to VB.NET converters online, but none have worked. Please convert the example to VB.NET or provide an alternate method of extending the GridView class. Notes / Difficulties: If you get an error with DataView objects, specify the type as System.Data.DataView and the type comparison could be the following: If data.[GetType]() Is GetType(System.Data.DataView) Then Since the event MustAddARow cannot have a type in VB (and RaiseEvent event doesn't have a return value), how can I compare it to Nothing in the function OnMustAddARow()?   • Update transaction in SQL Server 2008 R2 from ASP.Net not working

    Hello! Even though I've been a stalker here for ages, this is the first post I'm making. Hopefully, it won't end here and more optimistically future posts might actually be me trying to give a hand to someone else, I do owe this community that much and more. Now, what I'm trying to do is simple and most probably the reason behind it not working is my own stupidity. However, I'm stumped here. I'm working on an ASP.Net website that interacts with an SQL Server 2008 R2 database. So far everything has been going okay but updating a row (or more) just won't work. I even tried copying and pasting code from this site and others but it's always the same thing. In short: No exception or errors are shown when the update command executes (it even gives the correct count of affected rows) but no changes are actually made on the database. Apparently the update was working properly but I failed to notice that the textbox values were being overwritten in Page_Load.   • Where do I control the behavior of the "X" close button in the upper right of a winform?

    I'm venturing into making my VB.NET application a little better to use by making some of the forms modeless. I think I've figured out how to use dlg.Show() and dlg.Hide() instead of calling dlg.ShowDialog(). I have an instance of my modeless dialog in my main application form: Public theModelessDialog As New dlgModeless To fire up the modeless dialog I call theModelessDialog.Show() and within the OK and Cancel button handlers in dlgModeless I have Private Sub OK_Button_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles OK_Button.Click Me.DialogResult = System.Windows.Forms.DialogResult.OK Me.Hide() End Sub Private Sub Cancel_Button_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Cancel_Button.Click Me.DialogResult = System.Windows.Forms.DialogResult.Cancel Me.Hide() End Sub and that seems to work fine. The "X" button in the upper right is getting me, though. When I close the form with that button, then try to reopen the form, I get ObjectDisposedException was unhandled. Cannot access a disposed object. I feel like I'm most of the way there but I can't figure out how to do either of the following: Hide that "X" button Catch the event so I don't dispose of the object (just treat it like I hit Cancel) Any ideas? The class of this dialog is System.Windows.Forms.Form. Thanks as always!
