  • Books on hiring technical people?

    - by Mark Gibaud
I've just finished reading "Smart, and Gets Things Done" and while entertaining and byte-sized ;-) I found it a little US-centric and slightly less applicable to workplaces that are "only" above-average instead of rockstar--at-work places. I'm looking for more books on how to hire technical people. The only other one that has been recommended is Hiring the Best Knowledge Workers... Can anyone recommend any more?

  • Parsing a file with hierarchical structure in Python

    - by Kevin Stargel
I'm trying to parse the output from a tool into a data structure but I'm having some difficulty getting things right. The file looks like this: Fruits Apple Auxiliary Core Extras Banana Something Coconut Vegetables Eggplant Rutabaga You can see that top-level items are indented by one space, and items beneath that are indented by two spaces for each level. The items are also in alphabetical order. How do I turn the file into a Python list that's something like ["Fruits", "Fruits/Apple", "Fruits/Banana", ..., "Vegetables", "Vegetables/Eggplant", "Vegetables/Rutabaga"]?

  • How to: mirror a staging server from a production server

    - by Zombies
We want to mirror our current production app server (Oracle Application Server) onto our staging server. As it stands right now, various things are out of sync, and what may work in testing/QA can easily fail in production because of settings/patch/etc inconsistencies. I was thinking what would be best is to clone the entire disk daily and push it onto the staging server... Would this be the best method...?

  • How to set the cursor in kEventControlSetCursor?

    - by fret
I want to be able to change the appearance of the mouse cursor as it moves over various hot spots in my view's and it seems to me that I should be doing that in the kEventControlSetCursor handler (which I can get). The function "SetCursor" is deprecated, which leads to the question, what do I call to actually change the cursor? And is there some standard list of cursors I can use? Things like horizontal and vertical arrows? I beam?

  • agility of asp.net MVC

    - by Hellnar
Hello I am wondering how agile (fast to develop yet stable) asp.net MVC compared to frameworks using dynamic languages such as Django or Ruby on Rails. I will be happy if you share you experiance in the name of development speed (assuming each language/framework is known at a similar level) Things I love about Django Fast model design thanks to ORM Good template system Not too hard to deploy Easy to extend Lots of free apps to plugin and great documentation Thanks

  • Why isn't there a good scheme/lisp on llvm?

    - by anon
There is Gambit scheme, MIT scheme, PLT scheme, chicken scheme, bigloo, larceny, ...; then there are all the lisps. Yet, there's not (to my knowledge) a single popular scheme/lisp on LLVM, even though LLVM provides lots of nice things like: easier to generate code than x85 easy to make C ffi calls ... So why is it that there isn't a good scheme/lisp on LLVM?

  • Implementation Phase in SDLC

    - by ultrajohn
What are the different things that a developer (or a team of developer or the manager) needs to consider if the project they are working is now in the Implementation Phase. I am probably asking 'best practices' during the said phase. Maybe also the tools that should be made available and should be use by the developer. Thank you! I hope you won't find my question stupid. or please label it appropriately as needed.

  • Childwindows in MVVM

    - by VexXtreme
Hi I'm having a problem understanding something about MVVM. My application relies on dialogs for certain things. The question is, where should these childwindows originate from? According to MVVM, viewmodels should contain only businesslogic and have zero actual knowledge about UI. However, what other place should I call my childwindows from, considering they're UI elements? Doesn't this create tight coupling between elements?

  • Git sh.exe process forking issue on windows XP, slow?

    - by AndyL
Git is essential to my workflow. I run MSYS Git on Windows XP on my quad core machine with 3GB of RAM, and normally it is responsive and zippy. Suddenly an issue has cropped up whereby it takes 30 seconds to run any command from the Git Bash command prompt, including ls or cd. Interestingly, from the bash prompt it looks likes ls runs fairly quickly, I can then see the output from ls, but it then takes ~30 seconds for the prompt to return. If I switch to the windows command prompt (by running cmd from the start menu) git related commands also take forever, even just to run. For example git status can take close to a minute before anything happens. Sometimes the processes simply don't finish. Note that I have "MSYS Git" installed as well as regular "MSYS" for things like MinGW and make. I believe the problem is related to sh.exe located in C:\Program Files\Git\bin. When I run ls from the bash prompt, or when I invoke git from the windows prompt, task manager shows up to four instances of sh.exe processes that come and go. Here I am waiting for ls to return and you can see the task manager has git.exe running and four instances of sh.exe: If I ctrl-c in the middle of an ls I sometimes get errors that include: sh.exe": fork: Resource temporarily unavailable 0 [main] sh.exe" 1624 proc_subproc: Couldn't duplicate my handle<0x6FC> fo r pid 6052, Win32 error 5 sh.exe": fork: Resource temporarily unavailable Or for git status: $ git status sh.exe": fork: Resource temporarily unavailable sh.exe": fork: Resource temporarily unavailable sh.exe": fork: Resource temporarily unavailable sh.exe": fork: Resource temporarily unavailable Can I fix this so that git runs quickly again, and if so how? Things I have tried: Reboot Upgrade MSYS Git to most recent version & Reboot Upgrade MSYS to most recent version & Reboot Uninstall MSYS & uninstall and reinstall MSYS Git alone & Reboot I'd very much like to not wipe my box and reinstall Windows, but I will if I can't get this fixed. I can no longer code if it takes me 30 s to run git status or cd.

  • Help: Instance Variables & Properties [iPhone]

    - by Devoted
In something like this: @interface Control_FunViewController : UIViewController { UITextField *nameField; UITextField *numberField; } @property (nonatomic, retain) IBOutlet UITextField *nameField; @property (nonatomic, retain) IBOutlet UITextField *numberField; I understand that "UITextField *nameField;" is an instance variable and "@property ..." is a property. But what do these individual things do? I guess what I'm really asking is how the property is used for example in the implementation file (.m)

  • Can immutable be a memory hog?

    - by ciscoheat
Let's say we have a memory-intensive class like an Image, with chainable methods like Resize() and ConvertTo(). If this class is immutable, won't it take a huge amount of memory when I start doing things like i.Resize(500, 800).Rotate(90).ConvertTo(Gif), compared to a mutable one which modifies itself? How to handle a situation like this in a functional language?

  • URLScan and percent signs

    - by Hobbes
So I just ran into a stupid problem in which users could not download files that had a percent sign in it. It wound up being URLScan. I had to un-set two things in urlscan.ini: 1) Set VerifyNormalization to 0 (disabled) 2) Remove the percent sign from the "DenyUrlSequences" section Do an iisreset, and it problem solved. But the big question is: How much of a security risk is this?

  • Securing a .NET Application [closed]

    - by beakersoft
Duplicate: Protecting .NET Code from Reverse Engineering We've recently released a small application and this weekend I found a cracked version of it on Piratebay that had the registration checking removed, so the app ran as if it was a registered version. Apart from using a code obfuscation tool (which doesn't seem to be that hard to get around), are there any standard things we should be doing to make our .NET applications more difficult to crack?

  • Gathering Staff anyone interested?

    - by kasene
Thread Title - Gathering Staff Rush-Soft Game Design is currently looking for staff of a moderate skill level. Team Name - RushSoft Game Design Project Name - N/A We are gathering staff so that we can begin working on a new game. Target Aim - Freeware / Free Version - Paid Version With our first project our aim is to simply get our name out there. Generally we will be targeting a freeware distribution platform or a Free and Paid version. Compensation - Prehaps in the future but don't rely on it If in the future we start developing a game we intend to make any sort of sizable profit from then yes, there will be compensation however currently our low, low funding comes from generous donations. Any money that we make for now will go to the teams funding for things like engine licenses and company registration. Technology - C/C++ RSETech Our primary functional language will be C/C++ as most games are. We will be using a custom built library built on Direct3D called RSETech or RushSoft Engine Technology. Currently its is fully capable of being used for developing a game. The final version is made up of almost entirely C (No C++ or OOP). There is a C++ version currently in the works. Programming: - Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 / 2010 2D Art - Photoshop CS2 - GIMP Talent Needed - We currently are in need of x2 Programmers - With understanding of the following C/C ++ and game programming aspects: -If/Else Conditions -Functions/Methods -Arrays -Pointers (You don't need to fully understand these. Just know when they need to be used.) -Enums -Loops (For and While) -Structs (and How to use . and - syntax) -Classes (and how to call methods and access variables from a class) -State Machines -Switches -Include Guards -Understanding of how game loops work in general. (Init, Update, Render, Deinit) x2 Artists - As long as you have the means to and are able to draw 2D sprites and collab with a game designer to get a good result. 1 or more Game Designers - You can design levels (for platformers) as well as write game scripts and you can come up with good ideas and game mechanics. As long as you can do these things and are able to work well with artists and programmers you're golden. Business Consultant - Someone who knows the industry and how it works. Will inquire about possible distribution platforms as well as contact other developers, websites, and publishers on RushSofts behalf. Team Structure - Kasene Clark - Co-Founder/Lead Programmer/Game Designer Casey W - Co-Founder/Artist(GC/Animation)/Game Designer Nathan Mayworm - Game Designer. Website - RushSoft Websitek Contact - Kasene Clark [email protected] - [email protected] Phone - 12075181967 Feedback - Any Thank You! -Kasene
