  What's the best way for me to check if my website is compatible in IE7,8, Safari, FF, and Chrome without having to install each and everyone? I mainly want to check the CSS, HTML, and JavaScript. Update I put a bounty in hopes there is a more practical solution for someone like myself. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium x64. Update2 I don't mind installing these browsers now, but I can't even if I wanted to. Windows 7 doesn't allow me to install IE7.

  Hello. I am working for an intranet application. Therefore I have some control on the client machines. The Java Script library I am using is somewhat big in size. I would like to pre-install OR pre-load OR cache the Java Script library on each machine (each browser as well) so that it does not travel for each request. I know that browsers do cache a Java Script library for subsequent requests but I would like the library to be cached once so all subsequent requests, sessions and users. What is the best mechanism to achieve this?

• Best way to hide a window from the Alt-Tab program switcher?

  I've been a .NET developer for several years now and this is still one of those things I don't know how to do properly. It's easy to hide a window from the taskbar via a property in both Windows Forms and WPF, but as far as I can tell, this doesn't guarantee (or necessarily even affect) it being hidden from the Alt-Tab dialog. I've seen invisible windows show up in Alt-Tab, and I'm just wondering what is the best way to guarantee a window will never appear (visible or not) in the Alt-Tab dialog. Update: Please see my posted solution below. I'm not allowed to mark my own answers as the solution, but so far it's the only one that works. Update 2: There's now a proper solution by Franci Penov that looks pretty good, but haven't tried it out myself. Involves some Win32, but avoids the lame creation of off-screen windows.

• Best way to store large dataset in SQL Server?

  I have a dataset which contains a string key field and up to 50 keywords associated with that information. Once the data has been inserted into the database there will be very few writes (INSERTS) but mostly queries for one or more keywords. I have read "Tagsystems: performance tests" which is MySQL based and it seems 2NF appears to be a good method for implementing this, however I was wondering if anyone had experience with doing this with SQL Server 2008 and very large datasets. I am likely to initially have 1 million key fields which could have up to 50 keywords each. Would a structure of keyfield, keyword1, keyword2, ... , keyword50 be the best solution or two tables keyid keyfield | 1 | | M keyid keyword Be a better idea if my queries are mostly going to be looking for results that have one or more keywords?

  As I write code from now on, I plan to first lay out everything in beautiful, readable pseudocode and then implement the program around that structure. If I rank the languages that I currently know from easiest to most difficult to translate, I'd say: Lisp, Python, Lua, C++, Java, C I know that each language has its strength and weaknesses but I'm focusing specifically on pseudocode. What language do you use that is best suited for pseudocode-to-code? I always enjoy picking up new languages. Also, if you currently use this technique, I'd love to hear any tips you have about structuring practical pseudocode. Note: I feel this is subjective but has a clear answer per individual preference. I'm asking this here because the SO community has a very wide audience and is likely to suggest languages and techniques that I would otherwise not encounter.

  We have the following tools in place: Subversion (Version 1.5.9) Polarion (version 3.2.2) Polarion is based on Subversion, so on every action that changes anything (which is often the case), Polarion will use a Subversion commit to change anything. All things are currently stored in one and only one repository, so every commit of every user (some 100-200 on the same repository) will trigger the pre-commit hook. So what is the best strategy to provide pre-commit hooks that will trigger only for some, but not all projects run as fast as possible, because every pre-commit hook will block all other commits. We have tried to implement pre-commit hooks with Java (using SVNKit), but this will start on every commit a Java VM. So any ideas how to implement that nicely?

  I'm mostly interested in translation, but I'm sure someone else is looking for info on the other features of the language API (namely transliteration and virtual keyboard). I see alot of pages on the web about the limitations of the Language API, but I don't see anything about this in the official docs. Links to where this is described in the official docs would be greatly appreciated. Also, I'm guessing that the best solution will involve breaking up longer texts and translating each piece. Does this violate Google's term's of use? Doesn't this defeat the purpose of having a limit in the first place? Again, links to official documentation would be great.

  What is my best option for converting plain text links within a string into anchor tags? Say for example I have "I went and searched on http://www.google.com/ today". I would want to change that to "I went and searched on http://www.google.com/ today". The method will need to be safe from any kind of XSS attack also since the strings are user generated. They will be safe before parsing so I just need to make sure that no vulnerabilities are introduced through parsing the URLs.

I was thinking the mapper would emit siteID \t username and the reducer would keep a set() of the unique usersnames per key and then emit the length of that set. However that would be potentially storing millions of usernames in memory which doesn't seem right. Anyone have a better way? I'm using python streaming by the way thanks

  I'm working on a C# application that needs to use Direct3D in a control in a windows form, AND (at the same time) fullscreen on a secondary monitor. Basically, I want a Windows Forms application on one screen with a user-interface to control the graphics, and I'd like to show preview-graphics in a small control, and full-blown superduper megafancy graphics fullscreen on a secondary monitor. What's the best way to approach this? (For example, I know XNA can render in a Windows Forms control, but is it possible to then add a fullscreen window on another monitor as well?)

I know server's statistics (like Awstats) are very useful for that kind of purpose, specially to see 3XX, 4XX and 5XX errors (here's an Awstats example page) which are often bots or bad intentioned users that try well-known bad or malformed URLs.   I'm writing a .net web app that will read and write information to a SQL 2008 backend database. Some of this information will be highly confidential in nature so I want to encrypt certain data elements. I dont want to use TDE or any full-database encryption for performance reasons. My main concern is protecting this sensitive data as a last resort against a SQL injection or even a database server compromise. My question is what is the best way to do this to preserve performance? Is it faster to use the SQL2008 encryption functions such as EncryptByKey, or would it be faster to encrypt and decrypt the data in the .NET web app itself using a symmetric key stored in the secure web.config and store the encrypted values in the DB?

  We're working on a new ASP.Net site. The last major site we did was in classic ASP--the procedure we used there was to have the HTML completed first, then "bring it to life" with the ASP code. In the ASP.Net world, how does this work? I.e. how do the designers do their work if much of the mark-up is actually being generated by the server controls? We are also looking at ASP.Net MVC as a potential lightweight alternative.   Hello everybody, I want to generate html layout with areas (divs, spans) that can be shown/hidden conditionally. These areas are hidden by default. If I call .hide method with jquery on document.ready these areas may blink (browsers render partially loaded documents). So I apply "display: none" style in html layout. I wonder what is the best practice to avoid blinking, because applying "display:none" breaks incapsulation rule - I know what jquery does with hide/show and use it. If jquery's hiding/showing implementation will change one day, I'll get the whole site unworkable. Thank you in advance

I'm in the US, so it is not necessary for me to learn a second language to influence my career success, however I think knowing one and speaking it fluently could potentially put me in a more interesting career than if I did not.
