• asp.net mvc: What is the correct way to return html from controller to refresh select list?

  Hi, I am new to ASP.NET MVC, particularly ajax operations. I have a form with a jquery dialog for adding items to a drop-down list. This posts to the controller action. If nothing (ie void method) is returned from the Controller Action the page returns having updated the database, but obviously there no chnage to the form. What would be the best practice in updating the drop down list with the added id/value and selecting the item. I think my options are: 1) Construct and return the html manually that makes up the new <select> tag [this would be easy enough and work, but seems like I am missing something] 2) Use some kind of "helper" to construct the new html [This seems to make sense] 3) Only return the id/value and add this to the list and select the item [This seems like an overkill considering the item needs to be placed in the correct order etc] 4) Use some kind of Partial View [Does this mean creating additional forms within ascx controls? not sure how this would effect submitting the main form its on? Also unless this is reusable by passing in parameters(not sure how thats done) maybe 2 is the option?] UPDATE: Having looked around a bit, it seems that generating html withing the controller is not a good idea. I have seen other posts that render partialviews to strings which I guess is what I need and separates concerns (since the html bits are in the ascx). Any comments on whether that is good practice.

  I have a datagrid where a row can be deleted (using ajax). I'm have problem with the pager in the following scenario: Lets say my PageSize is 10, I have 101 rows so that's 11 pages with the last page with an single element. Let no assume that I'm on page 10 (PageIndex=9) and delete a row. Then I go to the 11'th page (who's now empty and doesn't really exist). ASP now shows me the EmptyDataTemplate and no pager so I can't go back.   C++ preprocessor __VA_ARGS__ number of arguments The accepted answer there doesn't work for me. I've tried with MSVC++ 10 and g++ 3.4.5. The error output of g++ more specifically says that only one argument is supplied. Having trouble believing that the answer would be proposed and then accepted when it totally fails to work, so what am I doing wrong? Why is XXX being interpreted as the argument and not being expanded? In my own messing around everything works fine until I try to pass off VA_ARGS to a macro containing some names followed by ... like so: #define WTF(X,Y,...) X , Y , __VA_ARGS__ #define WOT(...) WTF(__VA_ARGS__) WOT(52,2,5,2,2) I've tried both with and without () in the various macros that take no input.

• C# - Naming a value combined "getter/setter" method (WebForms & Binding)

  Looking for some help on some names for a project I'm currently working on. I don't have a compsci degree so I don't know what to call this. I have a method called TryToGetSetValue(Direction direction, object value, object valueOnFail) Then there would be a Direction enum public enum Direction { ModelToForm, FormToModel } Background This is a legacy ASP.NET application. The models, database, and mainframe are designed poorly. I can't put in MVP or MVC patterns yet (too much work). ASP.NET code is a ridiculous mess (partial pages, single-page design, 5x the normal amount of jQuery, everything is a jQuery UI dialog). I'm just trying to put in a bridge so then I can do more refactoring over the next year. I have ~200 fields that need to be set on a GET and written back on a POST. I trying not to x2 these 200 fields and have 400 lines of code to support. What would you call my method? enum? Is there so other form of binding that would be easy to use instead? I'm not a fan of the DetailsView or FormView built-ins of ASP.NET WebForms.

  I have been bothered for so long by the MySQL injections and was thinking of a way to eliminate this problem all together. I have came up with something below hope that many people will find this useful. The only Draw back I can think of this is the partial search: Jo =returns "John" by using the like %% statement. • Logging class using delegates (NullReferenceException)

  I have created a small application but I would now like to incorporate some type of logging that can be viewed via listbox. The source of the data can be sent from any number of places. I have created a new logging class that will pass in a delegate. I think Im close to a solution but Im receiving a NullReferenceException and I don’t know the proper solution.   I have a path defined: when /the admin home\s?page/ "/admin/" I have scenario that is passing: Scenario: Let admins see the admin homepage Given "pojo" is logged in And "pojo" is an "admin" And I am on the admin home page Then I should see "Hi there." And I have a scenario that is failing: Scenario: Review flagged photo Given "pojo" is logged in And "pojo" is an "admin" ...bunch of steps that create stuff in the database... And I am on the admin home page Then ... the rest of the steps The step that fails in the second one is "And I am on the admin home page" which passes just fine in the first scenario. • What does the Excel VBA range.Rows property really do?

  OK, I am finishing up an add-on project for a legacy Excel-VBA application, and I have once again run up against the conundrum of the mysterious range.Rows(?) and worksheet.Rows properties. Does anyone know what these properties really do and what they are supposed to provide to me? (note: all of this probably applies to the corresponding *.Columns properties also). What I would really like to be able to use it for is to return a range of rows, like this: SET rng = wks.Rows(iStartRow, iEndRow) But I have never been able to get it to do that, even though the Intellisense shows two arguments for it. Instead I have to use one of the two or three other (very kludgy) techniques. The help is very unhelpful (typically so for Office VBA), and googling for "Rows" is not very useful, no matter how many other terms I add to it. The only things that I have been able to use it for are 1) return a single row as a range ( rng.Rows(i) ) and 2) return a count of the rows in a range ( rng.Rows.Count ). Is that it? Is there really nothing else that it's good for? Clarification: I know that it returns a range and that there are other ways to get a range of rows. What I am asking for is specifically what do we get from .Rows() that we do not already get from .Cells() and .Range()? The two things that I know are 1) an easier way to return a range of a single row and 2) a way to count the number of rows in a range. Is there anything else?

• Problem with UserControl with custom Dependency Property

  Hi, I'm writing a user control with a dependency property for a search text called SearchText. It is a dependency property because I want to allow consumers of the control to use data binding. The user control contains a WPF TextBox where the user can enter the search text. I could use data binding to connect the SearchText dependency property of the user control with the Text dependency property of the TextBox, but this binding only fires when the text box looses input focus. What I want is SearchText to be updated after every change of Text. So I have added a TextChanged event handler to the user control where I set SearchText to the value of Text. My Problem is, the SearchText binding doesn't work, the source never gets updated. What am I doing wrong? • Add Ellipsis to a Path in a WinForms Program without Win32 API call (revisited)

  I was searching for a way to insert an ellipsis in a C# path, and found an answer here on stackoverflow: http://tinyurl.com/y6rmdfr Using the RTM versions of VS2010 and .Net 4.0, I was unable to get the suggested method to work. I searched the 'Net and found example code that uses the same method, but it failed in the same way. You can see the string I'm trying to shorten in my code below. After calling the MeasureText method, both the input string (OriginalName) and the output string (ellipsisedName) look like this: d:\abcd\efgh\ijkl\mnop\qrst\...\test.txt\0F\GHIJ\KLMN\OPQR\STIV\WXYZ\test.txt Two problems: 1) The resulting string is narfed (the path is truncated as expected, but is followed by what looks like a C-style terminating null and a chunk of the original path). 2) My original string is changed to be identical to the output string. • Am I using Settings in .NET correctly?

  Here's what I'm doing. I have three properties: MomsBackground, DadsBackground and ChosenBackground. When Momsbackground is selected in the program, I set the ChosenBackground string according to what item the user has clicked (either "Mom" or "Dad"). Then on Form_Load() I use a switch case for the ChosenBackground string and according to that select This.BackgroundColor to MomsBackground or DadsBackground. • jQuery - how to repeat a function within itself to include nested files

  I'm not sure what to call this question, since it involves a variety of things, but we'll start with the first issue... I've been trying to write a simple to use jQuery for includes (similar to php or ssi) on static html sites. Whenever it finds div.jqinclude it gets attr('title') (which is my external html file), then uses load() to include the external html file. Afterwards it changes the class of the div to jqincluded So my main index.html might contain several lines like so: <div class="jqinclude" title="menu.html"></div> However, within menu.html there might be other includes nested. So it needs to make the first level of includes, then perform the same action on the newly included content. So far it works fine, but it's very verbose and only goes a couple levels deep. How would I make the following repeated function to continually loop until no more class="jqinclude" elements are left on the page? I've tried arguments.callee and some other convoluted wacky attempts to no avail. • Rspec Selenium. Test to check certain Ajax functions passes when i expect it to fail.

  I am testing a Ajax action using Rspec and Selenium. My story is as follows: it "should create a new User with any input" do @browser.open "/people" @browser.wait_for_page_to_load "2000" @browser.type "user_name", "Alok Swain" @browser.click "user_submit" @browser.text?("Alok Swain").should be_true end The action i am testing is: def add_user @users = User.all User.create(params[:user]) render :update do |page| page.alert "Created User" page.replace_html "users", :partial => '/people/users_list', :locals => {:users => @users} end end The test fails and the error I get is: 'User should create a new User with any input' FAILED expected false to be true. This test should pass right ? I also kept an alert and tried @browser.is_alert_present.should be_true but i got the same error. I tried @browser.is_text_present("test") and this test succeeded. In the test database a record was created for Alok Swain but when I tried the above assertion it passed when i expected it to fail. Is there any thing else to be done here. What am I missing ?

• Open the Word Application from a button on a web page

  I'm developing a proof of concept web application: A web page with a button that opens the Word Application installed on the user's PC. I'm stuck with a C# project in Visual Studio 2008 Express (Windows XP client, LAMP server). I've followed the Writing an ActiveX Control in .NET tutorial and after some tuning it worked fine. Then I added my button for opening Word. The problem is that I can reference the Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word from the project, but I'm not able to access it from the web page. The error says "That assembly does not allow partially trusted callers". I've read a lot about security in .NET, but I'm totally lost now. Disclaimer: I'm into .NET since 4 days ago. I've tried to work around this issue but I cannot see the light!! • Static library not included in resulting LLVM executable

  Hi, I am trying to compile a c program using LLVM and I am having trouble getting some static libraries included. I have successfully compiled those static libraries using LLVM and, for example, libogg.a is present, as is ogg.l.bc. However, when I try to build the final program, it does not include the static ogg library.   Environment: asp.net 3.5 (C# and VB) , Ms-sql server 2005 express Tables Table:tableUser ID (primary key) username Table:userSchedule ID (primary key) thecreator (foreign key = tableUser.ID) other fields I have created a procedure that accepts a parameter username and gets the userid and inserts a row in Table:userSchedule Problem: Using stored procedure with datalist control to only fetch data from the database by passing the current username using statement below works fine protected void SqlDataSourceGetUserID_Selecting(object sender, SqlDataSourceSelectingEventArgs e) { e.Command.Parameters["@CurrentUserName"].Value = Context.User.Identity.Name; } But while inserting using DetailsView it shows error Procedure or function OASNewSchedule has too many arguments specified. I did use protected void SqlDataSourceCreateNewSchedule_Selecting(object sender, SqlDataSourceSelectingEventArgs e) { e.Command.Parameters["@CreatedBy"].Value = Context.User.Identity.Name; } DetailsView properties: autogen fields: off, default mode: insert, it shows all the fields that may not be expected by the procedure like ID (primary key) not required in procedure and CreatedBy (user id ) field . So I tried removing the 2 fields from detailsview and shows error Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'CreatedBy', table 'D:\OAS\OAS\APP_DATA\ASPNETDB.MDF.dbo.OASTest'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails. The statement has been terminated. For some reason parameters value is not being set. Can anybody bother to understand this and help?

  Does ASP.NET MVC offer any simple way to get model binding to work when you have model classes that inherit from others? In my scenario I have a View that is strongly typed to List<Person>. I have a couple of classes that inherit from Person, namely PersonTypeOne and PersonTypeTwo. I have three strongly typed partial views with names that match these class names (and render form elements for the properties of their respective models). This means that in my main View I can have the following code: <% for(int i = 0; i < Model.Count; i++) { Html.RenderPartial(Model[i].GetType().Name, Model[i]); } %> This works well, apart from when the user submits the form the relevant controller action method just gets a List<Person>, rather than a list of Person, PersonTypeOne and PersonTypeTwo. This is pretty much as expected as the form submission doesn't contain enough information to tell the default model binder to create any instances of PersonTypeOne and PersonTypeTwo classes. So, is there any way to get such functionality from the default model binder?

• Incorporating Devise Authentication into an already existing user structure?

  I have a fully functional authentication system with a user table that has over fifty columns. It's simple but it does hash encryption with salt, uses email instead of usernames, and has two separate kinds of users with an admin as well. I'm looking to incorporate Devise authentication into my application to beef up the extra parts like email validation, forgetting passwords, remember me tokens, etc... I just wanted to see if anyone has any advice or problems they've encountered when incorporating Devise into an already existing user structure. Empty string? What is the __? How do I call the function? Keyword like python, positional arguments or do I have to pass an array? I have managed to encode a qr using this package, but when i try to decode, using the code below it comes up with 2 errors (at the bottom of the page) I believe this is because I am not getting the image correctly after uploading, but can someone point out exactly where I have gone wrong.
