  As a newbie I seem to have messed up my upgrade leaving my system in a very unstable state. I attempted an upgrade from 8.04LTS which ended in an error about libc and kernel upgrades. I tried to upgrade the kernel but am now unsure if that worked, because when I retried my dist-upgrade there was a lot of errors about pre-dependencies and leaving packages un-configured. Now I have a system that answers almost every command with: /lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.8' not found (required by /lib/libselinux.so.1) I probably should try a complete re-installation, but I'm investigating if there is any possibility of getting a working glibc so that I at least can have some commands working to ensure that my backups are recent etc. before doing the clean install. not even 'ls' works without saying "glibc_2.8 not found".

• Free Typescript editor with definition based code completion feature

  I know that a plugin for Visual Studio exists. However i can't afford VS so i'm looking for a free alternative which can be used to code TypeScript and aware of the .d.ts definition files and can do code completion based on them. I know that Sublime Text and VIM can do syntax highlighting with the correct language definition file. However the biggest advantage of Typescript for me is that ability to give code assistance while coding. Are you aware of any editor which can do this? I'm interested even if it's in an experimental state.

• Android Emulator - Ubuntu 12.04

  When I type in the command @emulator Andreud where 'Andreud' is the name of the emulator I created. It gives the following errors and a blank screen in which I should get android home screen, icons, etc shows up. • Server-side Input

  Currently in my game, the client is nothing but a renderer. When input state is changed, the client sends a packet to the server and moves the player as if it were processing the input, but the server has the final say on the position. This generally works really well, except for one big problem: falling off edges. Basically, if a player is walking towards an edge, say a cliff, and stops right before going off the edge, sometimes a second later, he'll be teleported off of the edge. This is because the "I stopped pressing W" packet is sent after the server processes the information. Here's a lag diagram to help you understand what I mean: http://i.imgur.com/Prr8K.png I could just send a "W Pressed" packet each frame for the server to process, but that would seem to be a bandwidth-costly solution. • Server for online browser game

  I am going to be making an online single player browser game. The online element is needed so that a player can login and store the state of their game. This will include things like what buildings have been made and where they have been positioned as well as the users personal statistics and achievements. At this point in time, I am expecting all of the game logic to be performed client side So far, I am thinking I will use flash for creating the client side of the game. I am also creating a MySQL database to store all the users information. My question is how do I connect the two. Presumably I will need some sort of server application which will listen for incoming requests from any clients, perform the SQL query and then return the data. Does anyone have any recommendations of what technology/language to use?

• I want to host clients' websites, but not their email. What's the easiest way to handle this?

  My company lets non-technical users build their own niche industry websites on our server, which we host. they can currently point their nameservers at their registrar to us, which ends up with them no longer having access to their email if they've already set it up through said registrar. We don't want to interfere with their existing email, nor do we want to get into the business of setting up email for them through our service. Thus, having them point A records/cname to us would work, but is this too complex for a non-technie user? We thought of having them point nameservers to us but pointing the MX records back to them, but this is also beyond their scope. Is there an easy way to 'point records' at their initial state? Any other ideas/feedback?

• Ubuntu 14.04 Notification incorrectly displayed

  I have a problem with my notifications on Ubuntu 14.04 x64. The notifications are just plain text with a colored background, and are also strangely placed in the top left corner. I have no idea on how it changed. After one reboot it was just there.. Here is a picture of the problem in question.: As you can see the notification appear over the unified menu. How can I restore the original state of the notification bubble? • Doing practice jobsearch/technical interviews?

  I graduated college last year & I've never gone through the interview process - my current programming position evolved out of projects I did in school, but in a few months I'm making a clean break and moving across the country so I'm going to have to face a "grown-up" jobsearch. I'm kind of scared of technical interviews - I think I'm pretty good at my job and my hobby programming projects ... but what if it turns out I'm part of that group that thinks they're qualified, but really just cause despair at the state of education in the hearts of interviewers? So, I'm thinking of doing a "practice" job hunt in my current city to get an idea of what it's like and what kind of experience/expertise employers are really looking for. Is this a dick move ethically (applying to/interviewing for jobs I can't take)? If so, is there another good way to prepare for technical interviews, especially those little trick puzzle-type questions?

• Would google consider this a "link scheme"?

  I work for a County Government. In an effort to improve our search engine rankings I was considering contacting some of the other Counties in my state and seeing if we could setup an arrangement where we link to them and they link to us. It seems like a reasonable thing to have a "Other Counties" page with various links on a County website, but it also seems like it's bordering on a link scheme according to Google. When I read Google's article about link schemes it seems like we hit some of the right reasons for having links on another County's site but also some of the wrong. Does anyone have any insight into whether this is a good or bad idea?

• Why are the packages found with apt-get always horribly out of date?

  Whenever I use the package manager, it can only ever find really old versions of stuff. Example: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install postgresql The best it can do is version 8.4 (3 years out of date). Trying to get a later version, I get: $ sudo apt-get install postgresql-9.1 Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Couldn't find package postgresql-9.1 I experience the same issue whenever I use the package manager, so I usually just download and build things from source. • How do I draw video frames onto the screen permanently using XNA?

  I have an app that plays back a video and draws the video onto the screen at a moving position. When I run the app, the video moves around the screen as it plays.   Based on what I have read about Google's recent Panda and Penguin updates, I'm getting the impression that using semantic markup may help improve SEO results. On a EMD (exact match domain) site, that may have been hit, we list location-based products. We are now going to be adding a itemtype="http://schema.org/Product" to each product, with relevant details. However, that product may be available in Los Angeles and also in appear in a Seattle results page. We could add a LocalBusiness item type on each geo page to define the geo location for that page. While the definition states: A particular physical business or branch of an organization. Examples of LocalBusiness include a restaurant, a particular branch of a restaurant chain, a branch of a bank, a medical practice, a club, a bowling alley, etc. We could add use the location property which would simply include the city/state details. I realize that this looks like it is meant for a physical location, however could this be done without seeming black-hat?

• ubuntu 12.04 refuses to install with windows 7

  I have a desktop computer with windows 7 installed on it . Recently I downloaded ubuntu 12.04 and burned the iso image on a new blank DVD . After successfully burning DVD , I booted from the DVD. Ubutu interface appeared asking me to either choose try ubuntu or install ubuntu . I chose to install ubuntu. Again on next screen I choose to install ubuntu inside windows 7. After pressing continue button the following message appeared : " checking battery state .............. ok checking for running unattended upgrades : acpid : exiting speech dispatcher disabled ; edit /etc/default/ speech -dispatcher Asking all remaining processes to terminate ............. ok Please remove installation media and close the tray (if any) then press enter : " Now the problem is that when I remove the installation media ( ie the DVD ) and press enter then instead of installing ubuntu the computer reboots into windows 7 !!! I am a newbie to ubuntu and therefore do not know much about it . What should I do?

• Automatically zoom out the camera to show all players

  I am building a game in XNA that takes place in a rectangular arena. The game is multiplayer and each player may go where they like within the arena. The camera is a perspective camera that looks directly downwards. The camera should be automatically repositioned based on the game state. Currently, the xy position is a weighted sum of the xy positions of important entities. I would like the camera's z position to be calculated from the xy coordinates so that it zooms out to the point where all important entities are visible. My current approach is to: hw = the greatest x distance from the camera to an important entity hh = the greatest y distance from the camera to an important entity Calculate z = max(hw / tan(FoVx), hh / tan(FoVy)) My code seems to almost work as it should, but the resulting z values are always too low by a factor of about 4. Any ideas?

• Windows 7 Virtual PC - &ldquo;RPC server unavailable&rdquo;

  I use Windows 7 Virtual PC on my current project and I often bring home the files, so I can work some in the evenings.  Since my VHDs are large, I’ll only copy the undo disks, saved state, and virtual machine config files from my external drive.  I copy them to a small portable drive and once I get home, I’ll copy them to a large external drive. I’ve done this for over a year, but recently I started getting an error when I tried to start the VPC after the copying was finished.  It would open the initial window with the progress bar, but eventually the bar would stop, turn red, and then the error “RPC server unavailable” would appear.  When I first started seeing these, I’d try again, but no luck. After some testing, it turns out that my small portable drive is apparently going bad, so it was corrupting the files.  Lucky for me, that I never overwrote my good copies with corrupted copies, at least not at both the office and at home.

  The system in question has numerous examples of temporal objects and fields--ones which are a certain variable at a certain point in time. An example of this would be someone's rate of pay--there are different answers depending on when you ask and what the constraints might be; eg, can there ever be more than one of a certain temporal object concurrently, etc. Ideally, there would be an object that handles those constraints when a new state/stateful object is introduced; when a new value is set, it would prevent creating negative ranges and overlaps. Martin Fowler has written some great material on this (such as this description of Temporal Objects) , but what I've found of it tends to be entirely theoretic, with no concrete implementations. PHP is the target language, but examples in any language would be most helpful.
