  • Using AutoHotKey to change audio output source?

    I have two primary audio outputs on my machine: The speakers and a USB headset. Currently, in Windows 7 Professional x64, I type "sound" in the Start search menu to open up this dialog: I only care about the top two options for the purposes of this question. I would like to know if there's a way in AutoHotKey to switch from "Speakers (4- Sennheiser USB Headset)" to "Speakers (VIA High Definition Audio)" so I can avoid having to open this dialog every time I wish to switch.   • iPhoto printing PDFs sideways

    When I print to PDF from iPhoto (7.1.5), my scans (which are all portrait) all end up sideways in the PDF file. I've searched high and low for some setting that will alter this. The only one that I could find that would plausibly affect this is the Layout menu item in the Print customisation view, but this has no effect. Even rotating the images doesn't change it. Why is iPhoto printing my PDFs sideways, and how do I get it to stop?

    I am basically looking for a good guide on how to set up my home network with this set of hardware. I need: Dynamic DNS Firewall + port-forwarding VPN Wake-on-LAN from outside firewall VOIP would be nice QoS would be nice (make torrents take lower priority to other services when those other services are happening) DHCP Wireless + WPA2 security Ability to play multiplayer computer games I am not a networking or computing neophyte, but the last time I messed with network gear was a few years ago, so am needing to dust off knowledge I kinda half have. I have read that I should be wanting to set up the AM200 in half-bridge mode, so that the WRT54GL gets the WAN IP - this sounds like a good idea, but I'd still like to be advised. I have read that the dd-wrt firmware will meet my needs (though I gather I'll need the vpn-specific build, which appears to preclude supporting VOIP), but I'm not wedded to using it. I live in the UK and my ISP supplies me with: a block of 8 static IPs, of which 5 are usable to me a PPPoA ADSL2+ connection

  • SSH tunneling hangs with many connections

    I am forced to use SSH tunneling to access many servers (over 100) via one gateway server. To keep connection alive I am using autossh. Everything works pretty well until there is high traffic (people are connecting to most of the servers at once). then ssh process reaches 12% of cpu (which is configured maximum for separate process) and no connection is working anymore - i have to restart autossh script. What could be the possible reason for that?

(I think that what makes the server to be so slow)

  • Drupal on an NFS share has terrible performance

    We have a setup where a Drupal 7 site with the following setup - a VMware ESXi 4.1 host server running a web vm and an NFS VM. The web VM is using Apache and mod_php. The site is still in development thus we have to turn off all forms of caching due to the frequently-updated files. Each page request takes around 15-20 seconds to complete. Profiling the PHP code shows that the vast majority of time (normally over 90%) is taking by all the is_dir(), is_file() function calls that load up the modules. I've increased PHP's realpath cache size to several megs and an strace shows that the lstat calls then drop from over 200 to around 6 and stat() decreases a bit (around 600 calls). However, while this has shaved off quite a bit of time, I am simply unable to break past the 10 second per request barrier. Is there a way to get better performance out of this setup that doesn't involve caching?   • Internet Explorer cannot display page from apache with single SSL virtual host

    I have a question that has come up somehow in different questions but I still can't find the solution, yet. My problem is that I'm hosting a site on apache 2.4 on debian with SSL and Internet Explorer 7 on windows xp shows Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage I have only ONE virtual host that uses ssl, but DIFFERENT virtual hosts that use http. We get a connection to the internet using two broadband connections to a backbone and distribute the bandwidth across the 50 computers using a CISCO 1811 router, but the bandwidth is not enough for everybody.     I am trying to figure my needs regarding web service hosting. After trying Azure I have realized that the default MySql they provide (through a third party) limits the account to 4 connections. You can then upgrade the account to 15, 30 or 40 connections (which is quite expensive). Their 15 connections plan is descirbed as: "Excellent choice for light test and staging apps that need a reliable MySQL database". I have 2 questions: if my application is a web service which needs to preform ~120k Queries a day (Normal/BELL distribution) and each query is ~150ms(duration)/~400ms(fetch), how many connection do I need? If instead of using cloud computing, I will choose a VPS, how many connections will I be able to handle on a 1GB 2 cores VPS? Thank you!

  • What happens when you add a Graphics card to a i7 with build in graphics (e.g. HD 4000)

    I'm thinking of upgrading my computer from an AMD Phenom II X4 955BE with a AMD Radeon HD 6800 Graphics card (not integrated) to using a Intel Core i7 3770. As I have no knowledge of integrated graphics, my question is, what happens to the computing power when not using the HD4000 integrated graphics of the CPU (does it mean the CPU will run faster then it would if I relied on it?) Also what is better the CPUs inbuilt HD4000 or my Radeon Graphics card? I am mostly interested in terms of content creation: Using Adobe After Effects, 3D Rendering etc. Not too bothered about gaming performance. I will be using the spare parts of this build and older systems to make a second computer for network renders so what will be the advantages of keeping the Radeon with the current system for that?

  • Database Snapshots of Mirrored databases affect performance of Principal database?

    I have 2 servers set in Mirroring High-safety. One is Principal and another in Mirror. Currently I have 2 snapshots of a Production database (100 GB size) created on Principal server (for no_lock purpose of massive select processes) and 2 snapshots on the mirror server for the same database for reporting purposes. I know snapshots reduce performance of source databases but I am not sure if snapshots from mirror server have any impact on principal server's performance. thanks,
