  We have SQL Server 2008 installed on 64Bit Windows Server 2003. When we try connect to the local SQL Server using SQL Server Management Studio at the console, we get the error: A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe. When we try TCP from same local SSMS to local server, we get the same error but intead of the pipe message its something like "connection forcibly closed". Now, here is the strange part - we CAN connect to this SQL Server from any other machine on the network using SSMS. - AND - WE CAN'T connect to ANY SQL Server from the problem server. So it seems the SQL Server instance is fine and accepting remote connections. However, the SSMS on that machine will not connect to any SQL Server even remotely. When we try an ADO.NET connection from C# remotely we can connect, run that same code on the console of the trouble server and we get the same errors. How can this be solved?

  I have a bit of a problem. We run a wordpress blog behind a ngnix proxy and looking to terminate the ssl on the nginx side. • how to remove background layer of djvu file

  Hello, I've downloaded some files from the Internet Archive. They come in different file formats and most of the time I use pdf. However, sometimes the scans are saves in colour instead of b/w. This makes it difficult/impossible to read on a dedicated ebook reader. In that case I downloaded the djvu files as on the PC you can select which layer (color, bw,fore,back) one would like to see. Selecting the bw gives excellent results. However, the ebook reader does not has this option. The question is, how can I remove /extract a layer from the djvu file and save only this layer. So far I've tried the following two approaches: 1) select bw in the djvu viewer on the PC and printed to postscript file. Followed by a ps2pdf conversion. This works, but generates a fairly large pdf file. Sure, I can again upload it to any2djvu but it just seems to much manual work for each file. 2) I tried the shared annotation feature and said (mode bw). This works on the PC as desired but is ignored on the ebook reader as the other layers are still present. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

• Hosting multiple websites from home

  I have just been accepted for Microsofts Wevsite Spark program which I mainly got for the tools, Visual Studio, Blend. I also have a few of my own websites, personal and a couple of business ones. I also work freelance and sometimes I would like a place to just put a demo up of a clients project. The websites I currently have are all on differnet hosting provders and domain registrars. The WebsiteSpark comes with Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008. It would be really advantagous of me to have all these in one place but also so I have complete control over the database and the environment. So I am thinking over the next 4-6 months of migrating all this to my own server that I will host from home, or maybe even setup at home and then store in a proper datacentre. I was wondering what steps I should take and what to be aware of, specifically: 1) having all these different websites on one computer and having the url got to the proper place. 2) Cost effectiveness? Having the server in home as apposed to datacentre. Most solutions I see charge over £1000 a month to have a machine in datacentre. This is mostly for my own ease of management and shared hosting which I currently have is very limited configuration wise. Would getting a server in house be beneficial for then upgrading to the cloud? What measures should I take with my ISP? I know this is a lot I've asked but just even links to good articles would be good. Thanks

• Files being rolled back on server 2008 R2

  I've got a weird situation occurring on my dev server. Randomly, and for no reason that I can see, files are being rolled back to an earlier version! This has happened twice now - the first time I assumed I'd done something wrong somewhere, restored the file I was after from a backup and gave it no further thought. The second time, just now, it happened to a folder containing just a few files that I was working on - suddenly all the changes I'd made over the last day or two were gone! (I know, commit more often, ay?). Thankfully I have a daily backup and so have recovered my files, but I'm very concerned about this and need to understand how and why it's happened. The only change made between file states is that I enabled sharing on a completely unrelated folder. I'm developing an app on Railo, which is running on Tomcat. The code was all fine and in c:\websites\appname. I shared the 'Railo' folder, which is c:\railo in order to allow my IDE access to the logs generated by the app (contained in c:\railo\tomcat\logs) and when I reloaded the app, the code was reverted to a few days ago! I'm at a complete loss here. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

• Users are getting a temporary profile

  A bit about current setup: It is windows 2008 R2 AD servers (all of them are 2008R2) and couple locations which set as Sites. Each location has DFS on AD server. Roaming profiles are not used nor configured. Users have their home folder configured as mapped S: drive to DFS shared folder. For example: in profile tab user has: Home Folder - connect - S: to \\domain.com\dc\users\%username% We also have redirected Desktop, Documents and Downloads folders to \\domain.com\dc\users. Everything was fine. Suddenly (today), users in most locations lost their local profile (both XP and W7 desktops) and got temporary profiles. Also, it looks like local profile was created today (from folder properties). I checked events at couple machines and there is not errors related to profiles or logon process. I do not see issues in event logs at servers as well. Basically, I run out of ideas what is wrong and why machines lost their local profiles. PS: Laptop users do not have their folders redirected, but lost profiles as well.

• While using an ntfs smb share for mac users, do symbolic links and extended attributes work?

  We have a majority of mac users but we'd rather support their file sharing using a Windows server with an ntfs drive, or at least a Linux server with ext3. We've had trouble, much trouble, utilizing the OS X server software and after the years are now looking to abandon it. What's mostly holding us back is the fact that the mac users very often utilize symbolic links and other special features that exist for an HFS+ partition. The shared locations are mostly primary storage and not just used as an archive storage location. While there is an option to create symbolic links under ntfs, I'm curious if there is anything I need to look out for if I were to move the files over to a new partition that's hosted from a Windows server from the HFS+ partition; in addition, how well creating a symbolic link from a mac might work. I am also worried about windows backup software and if it will ruin these special sym links, and how placing permissions on sub-folders will work. Alternatively I could remotely backup the files using a mac and Bru, nonetheless I still want to get away from mac server for hosting the shares.

• SSH to remote host (edgemarc 4200 or 4500 series routers) and pull arp data

  I've been trying to think of a method to do this for days, but have not come up with anything yet. Ideally, this is what I'm looking to do: From a windows XP machine, I need to open an SSH connection to a remote host, send the arp command, and pull the text results of the command back for use on the client. I will need to parse this data and preferably produce a 2D array of IPs and MAC addresses. There will be no shared keys, this is all done with a username and password that will always be different, they will need to be fed into the command via variables that will be pulled from a database using an autoit script based on the WAN ip of the remote host. Now the actual parsing of the data and creation of the array will be easy if I can just get the text of the arp table. Is there any way to ssh to a remote host, run a command and return the data from that command to the client in a batch script or perl script (it is ok if it writes the text to a file, I can read it out of the file later, I just need it to get to the client)?

  Vista Ultimate 32 bit Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit I've read through similar questions about sharing between Win7 and Vista, but none of them have resolved my issue of not being able to share between Win7 and Vista: Connecting to a Vista shared folder from Windows 7 Networking Windows 7 and Vista Enable File sharing in Windows Vista Previously I had previously had my Vista and XP system sharing back and forth without any problems. I was able to access the shares without entering a user name / password in the NT challenge prompt (note: account names and passwords were different on the Vista and XP systems). Currently I replaced my XP system with a Win7 system. Now, when I attempt to access shares to/from Vista / Win7, I am continually prompted with an NT challenge to enter my credentials. Things I've Verified/Tried Both systems are on the same workgroup. Win 7 is using the Home network. Vista is using the Private network. In other words, neither system is using a Public network profile. Enabled file sharing with and without password protection on both Vista and Win7 Tried HomeGroup Connections (win7) with Windows to manage connections and Use user accounts to connect. Reviewed too many online articles to count to trouble shoot. Set the shares to have full control by everyone. Set up the shares directly on the directory and through the share manager. My Question How can I enable file sharing between Vista and Win7 without being prompted with a username/password challenge, ever?

• Inbox not updating in Exchange 2010, all users affected

  I'm battling against this darn issue this morning. We have the following setup: Big Hyper-V machine hosting the servers as VM's VM for CAS: WEB.XXX.local VM for Mailbox: EXC.XXX.local Servers are running Server 2008 R2 with Exchange 2010 SP1 Clients are all running Windows 7 Pro x64 with Outlook 2010 x64 The problem we're having is that nobody is able to see any emails received today (16th of October), but they are able to send externally. When I reply back to the email received externally, I don't get an NDR, yet the user cannot see my email. This is what I found and tried thus far: If we create a subfolder in Outlook 2010 and move any email from the inbox into that folder, changes will be immediately reflected in OWA We've been sending test emails to other users internaly and external email addresses and the sent items folder contains all those tests, synced properly to OWA as well Have tried crating a new profile, new emails are still missing Tried disabling Cache Mode, still no luck Also disabled "Download shared folders", still no luck Tried to setup a brand new Exchange mailbox and configured it on a VM that never had Outlook on it, still the same issue Tried restarting Exchange services on both CAS and Mailbox servers, no luck Tried rebooting both CAS and Mailbox servers, still no luck Performed a Mailbox Discovery on my admin account, emails from today are being found in the Discovery results, so the stuff is there, just not updating the user inboxes Any idea about what this hellish thing can be? • Creating multiple SFTP users for one account

  I'm in the process of migrating an aging shared-hosting system to more modern technologies. Right now, plain old insecure FTP is the only way for customers to access their files. I plan on replacing this with SFTP, but I need a way to create multiple SFTP users that correspond to one UNIX account. A customer has one account on the machine (e.g. customer) with a home directory like /home/customer/. Our clients are used to being able to create an arbitrary number of FTP accounts for their domains (to give out to different people). We need the same capability with SFTP. My first thought is to use SSH keys and just add each new "user" to authorized_keys, but this is confusing for our customers, many of whom are not technically-inclined and would prefer to stick with passwords. SSH is not an issue, only SFTP is available. How can we create multiple SFTP accounts (customer, customer_developer1, customer_developer2, etc.) that all function as equivalents and don't interfere with file permissions (ideally, all files should retain customer as their owner)? My initial thought was some kind of PAM module, but I don't have a clear idea of how to accomplish this within our constraints. We are open to using an alternative SSH daemon if OpenSSH isn't suitable for our situation; again, it needs to support only SFTP and not SSH. Currently our SSH configuration has this appended to it in order to jail the users in their own directories: # all customers have group 'customer' Match group customer ChrootDirectory /home/%u # jail in home directories AllowTcpForwarding no X11Forwarding no ForceCommand internal-sftp # force SFTP PasswordAuthentication yes # for non-customer accounts we use keys instead Our servers are running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

• Looking for issue tracker software for residential property management

  This question is about a computer software (as per SU guidelines) application for centrally tracking issues concerning the management of a residental block of flats (apartments as they say in the US and France). Issues are incidents - and their resultant unplanned maintenance to address them, also planned one-off maintenance and also regular planned routine maintenance. I live in a block of flats (apartments), and along with other residents, are looking to more closely watch over issues with the communal, shared areas of the premises (corridors, courtyards, stairs, lifts, lights, trash/bin shed, bike stands, parking areas etc) and their maintenance, currently done by a property management company. Our own homes are our own affair internally, its the outside communal areas that I have the interest. The aim being to control costs and possibly reduce them, by proactively managing the property using historical data to predict issues and also to scrutinise maintenance charges against such data to ensure that the costs are as expected. Trending could also be established whereby recurrences of things can be detected and pre-empted to reduce costs. As a software professional, I'm aware of Bugzilla, eventum being free tools for software - which could be customised to fit this application, but wondered if there was something more appropriate. It might be useful for such software to be on a web server, with secure access, so that residents can log in and view the issues.

• How do I change the default ftp folder in MacOS X 10.6?

  I'm running WordPress 2.9.1 from a Mac running 10.6.3. WordPress is installed to the /Library/WebServer/Documents folder. WordPress has a feature called AutoUpdate. Clicking an autoupdate button will download and install updated versions of the WordPress software, or third-party plugin tools. It's a convenient way to keep things up to date. WordPress uses FTP to download the files. I've enabled FTP and set up a user account and opened the requisite ports in my firewall for FTP traffic. This doesn't seem to be enough for my self-hosted installation, though. I'm sure this feature was originally designed for someone who has access to a remote shared webserver, and that it's merely a configuration challenge related to the FTP setup. I feel that if I can adjust the initial directory that the FTP service presents to the AutoUpdate feature, everything else will work properly. So, my question is, how do I adjust what folder is presented when a given user connects to a Mac running 10.6.3 via FTP?

• VPS Memory Exchausted Even With Light Settings

  Linux noob here. I have a 256MB VPS on Ubuntu 11.04 server and when I run "free -m" the result shows all memory being used (including the second line re: buffers/cache). I found this very strange, considering I only have 5 Apache processes running each chewing up about 20MB each. MYSQL is taking up 30MB. To my knowledge, and according to "top", I have no other memory hogs operating. Settings that may be relevant: PHP memory_limit = 32M MYSQL key_buffer = 16M Prefork MPM Maxclients = 10 So when I reviewed these settings, I naturally thought maxclients was too high, so I tried switching it to 5. Now not only does my memory still show as being 100% used, my website loads much, much slower, despite not getting any traffic aside from mine at the moment. I don't understand this. I thought a single Apache process handles all requests from a client received within the "KeepAliveTimeout" window, which I've set to 2 seconds. With my initial config. of 10 maxclients, my page load times are around .3ms, so a single process should handle that no problem, correct? So next I went to an extreme level of 1 for maxclients. My memory is still at 100% usage and my site loads painfully slow. I'm a noob at a complete loss here. According to the many tutorials I've read on basic server setup, I should be good to go. Help! • Reset rc.d so software starts at boot again

  I ran the following 2 commands on my VPS box and now it boots without starting any software at all. According to rcconf it's still supposed to start my chosen software (ssh etc.) but it doesn't. update-rc.d vz defaults update-rc.d vzeventd defaults I already tried removing them again with update-rc.d -f vz remove update-rc.d -f vzeventd remove But that didnt't change anything. /etc/rc.local also still correctly lists some scripts I want to run at start-up, but they don't seem to be called either. How do I make my software start at boot again?

• Recommend a UK based VPS host equivalent to Dreamhost [closed]

  I appreciate this question could be considered subjective and argumentative so can people make recommendations rather than arguing about the best. I believe the "correct" answer is the one closest to what I am looking for. Basically I live in the UK but have been using the US based Dreamhost for about 6 years now, and my web projects are getting to the scale where the websites need to the UK based to cope with the demand and load. I originally had shared hosting with Dreamhost but upgraded to a VPS a while ago, getting 512mb of RAM, unlimited disk space, bandwidth and domains for $30. Their control panel is a custom easy to use build that they have created in house and offers features very similar to other web panels (as far as I am aware). So basically my question boils down to, is there anywhere that offers an equivalent package? In all honesty as long as I have over 50gb HDD space and unlimited domains it doesn't really matter? Are there any VPS providers you would recommend as reliable? I promise to check every link posted, many thanks for your time!

• Uninstallation of WSUS form SBS 2008

  I am not much experienced system admin, but i came across the client who was having SBS 2008. The server was running out of HDD space. So to recover some, I removed its WSUS role (twas not needed).this removed WSUS 3.0 SP1 & freed a lot of space. This SBS is: Domian controller, DNS, DHCP, File server. After i removed WSUS i disabled windows update service & i rebooted serer & checked from one of client if the shared folders are accessible. they were. Next day all of sudden i got call from them saying they can't login into their domain. I looked into server, the Active directory service was stopped. I never remember touching any service other than windows update. How come AD service stopped running all of sudden. Is removing WSUS have such impact? I am not aware of any such thing.

  In a test setup, we are running several virtual machines on a single vmware workstation host. All virtual machines are connected via a "host only" network. This runs fine up to 2 or 3 virtual machines (depending on the host hardware). To allow more virtual machines, we want to use more host machines. Details about the environment and applications: Host PCs are running Windows XP in a corporate intranet. VMware used is Workstation 6.5 Guests are running Windows Server 2003 All guests act as Web Servers One of the guests additionally acts as Windows File server, offering shared folders for the other guests to connect to. Restrictions: VMware guests shall not be visible from the intranet. Changes to the host PC are restricted by corporate policy. In the virtual network, no domain controller exists. All virtual machines are member of the same workgroup. Running the virtual network as NAT is possible. Port forwarding might be used if it does not conflict with ports used by the host PC. • Why is my cron daemon is being killed every few minutes?

  As of about a week ago, my cron daemon refuses to stay running. I'm using Debian 6 x64 on an OpenVZ virtual machine. Running something like pgrep cron shows that the daemon isn't running. I start the service with service cron start or /etc/init.d/cron start and it launches, but it disappears from the running process list after a few minutes (varying anywhere between 1 - 30 minutes before the process is killed again). Using strace -f service cron start, I can see that the process is being killed for some reason: nanosleep({60, 0}, <unfinished ...> +++ killed by SIGKILL +++ There's nothing relevant in /var/log/syslog, /var/log/messages, /var/log/auth.log, or /var/log/kern.log to explain why the the process is dying. The system has at least 800 MB of free memory, and cat /proc/loadavg returns 0.22 0.13 0.04 so resources shouldn't be the issue. With cron running, free -m reports: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 1024 211 812 0 0 0 -/+ buffers/cache: 211 812 Swap: 0 0 0 I also tried removing and reinstalling the cron package using apt-get. Update: I initially thought the problem was a resource issues. I erased my entire VPS and started from a fresh Debian image. There is now nothing else running on the system, but even from a clean install my cron daemon is still being killed at random. What else should I check? How do I find out what's killing my crond?

• Windows 7 sharing folder from command line, selecting users and triggering the "Apply" of changes

  I have a drive that doesn't get mounted until after I log in. (A Truecrypt thumbdrive device, and no, I'm not making it a "System Favorite" to get around this.) I'd like to construct a batch file to share it once I've gotten it mounted because the sharing info doesn't seem to stick through a reboot. From the GUI, I'd go into the folder Properties-Sharing. And then in Advanced Sharing I'd pick the name to share it as. And then under the "Share..." button I'd pick the users and the permissions I want to grant them. After "Apply" there's a pause -- I'm not sure what's happening here, but the dialog says "Sharing Items..." -- and then everything is okay. From the command line, I've done: net share MyFolder=F:\MyFolder cacls F:\MyFolder /G FirstUser:F cacls F:\MyFolder /G OtherUser:F And this almost works. I can see the share on the network then, but nobody has permissions to do anything. If I go into the GUI and change anything (and I can see my command-line changes in there already) and press "Apply" I get the: "Sharing Items.... This may take a few minutes" Dialog... and then Voila! It works. I get the "Your folder is shared" dialog with the command-line changes I made, along with the GUI change that I made to trigger the "Sharing Items..." dialog. Everything's peachy. Is a service being restarted? Which one? What's triggering the sharing to take effect? And -- more importantly -- how do I do it from the command line?

• Clone Microsoft VM > SharePoint issues

  Hi, We have an existing (production) Hyper-V VM that I want to clone to create a staging server. This server is NOT on a domain/active-directory - uses all local computer accounts. It is Windows 2008 OS, SharePoint 2007, SQL server 2008, Reporting Services, and some custom line-of-business web-applications. We rename the server etc as per the documentation we have, but are having troubles specifically with SharePoint. Some of the sites do not come up, and some issues adding/updating site settings such as site owners. Does anyone know of a definitive resource to this process? thanks Update: We seem to have most working, but the Shared Service Provider, and the SSP's admin site, are not working. In addition, the custom web-parts that reference IIS Session objects are failing (which seem to be related to the Share Service Provider). All the Windows user accounts for various services are renamed during the server cloning, but the windows account names in SQL server are not automatically changed. • Connecting to a subdomain severs the connection to the domain itself. What's going on?

  Hi all. We have a website on a third-party server (server leased and shared with other websites) and the server provides access to our SQL Server database through a subdomain in the form of mssql.DomainName.com. I was told to use SQL Management Studio Express to connect to this subdomain in order to manage the database. After a few tries and getting many "Timeout" messages, I finally manage to connect to the server; everything's fine. But now I can't connect to DomainName.com anymore. Trying to browse DomainName.com using Firefox, it tries to "lookup" DomainName.com address and fails, telling me "the server was not found". I have to disconnect Management Studio from the server and wait a couple of hour for DomainName.com to become available again, and after that, trying to reconnect to the SQL Server again repeats the scenario. While I can't browse DomainName.com directly, I can use a proxy to connect to it, meaning that the problem is somehow related to a DNS my computer tries to ask to translate the name to the corresponding IP. Anyone seen anything like this before? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
