• Windows Phone 7 dev: C# or silverlight for a simple app?

  I'm about to hire a programmer to develop Windows Phone 7 apps. The current app that shall be developed is quite simple. The app will download content from a Web-API. There are two lists to select content. There is a single item content page. Users can rate the content and upload photos. The screens will be produced by our artist. I am pretty sure that most of the available programmers haven't touched WP7 development yet. Now the questions are: What technology is suitable for this kind of app? What technology requires less research, learning and production time? Do you already have experience of limitations of silverlight compared to C#? (I am also thinking of future projects) My guess is that silverlight programmers are more experienced in UI programming than C# coders. Do you feel the same way?

• Installing Ubuntu 12 on SATA III drive

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on a SATA III drive however the installer will not recognize my drive in the guided (dual-boot) install. I have changed the controller from IDE to AHCI to no avail, the install still will only recognize my very small second drive that is plugged into a SATA II port. The thing is, the unguided install sees this drive just fine, I just am not sure enough of what I'm doing to feel safe installing via this method. Is there a fix for this beyond plugging my drive into a SATA II port? I really would like to avoid this because of my terrible cable management skills it would be a huge pain to switch it over.

• Bitmap to Texture2D problem with colors

  I have a small problem with converting a bitmap to a Texture2D. The resulted image of the conversion has the red channel switched with the blue channel :/ I don't know why, because the pixel formats are the same.   What are basic programming directions? Can you please list them and give a brief review of each? Would be nice to have a list for each direction (web-development/*enterprise*/standalone/*mobile*/etc, correct me if I skipped something) like this: 1). Most popular languages of this direction (php for web, objective C for iOS mobile development etc) 2). It's demand on market (from 0 to 5, subjective) 3). How much tasks differ (do you always create same-of-a-kind programs which are like clones of each oother or projects change and you often get to create something interesting, new and fresh?) 4). • Avoid GPL violation by moving library out of process

  Assume there is a library that is licensed under GPL. I want to use it is closed source project. I do following: Create small wrapper application around that GPL library that listens to socket, parse messages and call GPL library. Then returns results back. Release it's sources (to comply with GPL) Create client for this wrapper in my main application and don't release sources. I know that this adds huge overhead compared to static/dynamic linking, but I am interested in theoretical way.

• Good Literature for "Object oriented programming in C"

  This is not a debate question about whether or not C is a good candidate for Object oriented programming or not. Quite often C is the primary platform where the development is happening. I have seen, and hopefully learnt through crawling many open source and commercial projects - that while the language inherently doesn't stop you if you create "non-object" code. However, you can still think in the "Object" way and reasonably write code that captures this designs thinking. For those who has done this, OO way is still the best way to write code even when you are programming in C. While, I have learnt most of it through the hard way, are there any deep literature that can help educate the relatively young guys about how to do OO programming in C?

And there is only few days left out, as I know many people in Stack Overflow are working in Software field, I thought to ask these question. Does the project that I'm doing in my final year need to be excellent? If so, what kind of project to do? And how do you say that the project is excellent or not? Writing the code is very fun and serious at times. But the code should have a good algorithm? And mostly in any software companies interview, what kind of question they ask?   I'm a software developer, currently working on web development. We are a small company a team with 2 persons, a developer and a designer and we have no-one to test our applications. From the last week I was somehow rushed to finish a task within a project programmed by someone else and I released it with a bug which I did not see. Today I got the last warning and if there is a release with a bug I will be fired. So is this fair enough to get fired because releases with bugs without any testers around or should I really improve my skills on testing?

• GParted wont resize extended partitions

  I have dual booted windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and have decided that I need more space on my Ubuntu partition. I used gparted on a Live CD to shrink my Windows 7 partition (/dev/sda3) but when i try to resize the extended partition (/dev/sda4), which houses my linux partition (/dev/sda6), the right click options are greyed out and there is a key next to the extended partition. I have resized the partitions within the extended partition before to provide room, but now I can go no further with that, and need to grow the extended partition. The free space lies to the left of the extended partition and there is a small amount of free space directly to the right as well. Also, within the extended partition is /dev/sda5 (ntfs) , which I have no idea what is on it, but most of the space (3.42GB) is used, /dev/sda6 (ext4, mount point: /), my partition containing Linux, and /dev/sda7 (linux-swap). I hope you guys can help me with this because I really don't want to screw something up while trying to resize the extended partition.

• What makes game sound effects "good"?

  I'm making a small game, and I've found some free sound effects that I'd like to use. The issue is that I can't get the sound effects to sound like they "belong" in my game. I don't know what to look for that can make sound effects match the rest of my game style. I have some ideas on what affects the meshing of audio with graphics. For example, I have a feeling that the current SFX I may be too "realistic" for my graphical style, which is pretty cartoon-like. Also, is there a golden standard for what volume various SFX should be at? (for example, I am thinking that footsteps or other common sounds should be at barely audible volumes, while enemy deaths or something that is a "big deal" should be louder). I found a similar question about graphics, I'm looking for a similar response with sound effects.

  I have been asked to compile a report into dropout rates during checkout for a global webstore I have used a sample size over one month as my sample because: google analytics slows to a crawl over larger sample sizes and makes much of the analysis agonisingly small I believe it to be statistically significant and a representative sample My client has asked me why I didn't use yearly figures and wants proof that one month of data is 'statistically significant'. Am I right in thinking that I need to compare the standard deviation of my monthly sample to the yearly sample and ensure that the deviation is under a certain %age? Question: how do I prove one month of Google Analytics data is representative to one year worth of data? Stats: 90k unique views/month ~1.1m per year.

• How do I deal with code of bad quality contributed by a third party?

  I've recently been promoted into managing one of our most important projects. Most of the code in this project has been written by a partner of ours, not by ourselves. The code in question is of very questionable quality. Code duplication, global variables, 6-page long functions, hungarian notation, you name it. And it's in C. I want to do something about this problem, but I have very little leverage on our partner, especially since the code, for all its problems, "just works, doesn't it?". To make things worse, we're now nearing the end of this project and must ship soon. Our partner has committed a certain number of person-hours to this project and will not put in more hours. I would very much appreciate any advice or pointers you could give me on how to deal with this situation.
