• Suggestions on Calculating Advertising Rates [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do I set a price for advertising on my website? I recently launched a new developer website, Black Belt Coder. The site is only seeing about 150 visitors per day but, given that it's only been live two months, I feel I'm off to a good start. I'd like to start monetizing the site as soon as possible but consider AdSense and other programs largely a waste of time. I'd like to deal directly with the advertisers but have no idea what to charge. Are there any guidelines for determining advertising rates based on visitors or page views? I don't expect to do PPC. I want to charge a the time period for banner ads, knowing that advertisers will be keeping an eye on the number of clicks.

• How to categorize textures into atlases

  I am going to use texture atlasing for the first time in my games, and at first it seemed like a great idea to split textures into atlases by categorizing them by terrain themes e.g ForestTextures, WinterTextures etc. But that could cause a problem when for example a flower has to use transparency shader and other models use a diffuse shader. So those cannot be atlased into the same texture. Thus, would atlasing textures into themes as mentioned before and then splitting them by shader like ForestDiffuse and ForestTransparent be good? Or is there a better way to categorize and build them?

• Connecting Ubuntu 11.10 to Samsung LSCD TV over HDMI TV, gives screen in green and lila

  I have a Dell 5720 laptop with ubuntu 11.10. I can't connect to my Samsung LCD TV (over Marantz nr 1601 AV). Audio is ok but the pictures are displayed in two colours: green and lila ! Please send me a massage how can I fix this problem ! Thanks a lot. I am very confused because I do not do anything however it comes(seldom) to the right colouring but only for a while(5minutes) and returns to the green-lila picture again when I do something else for example surfing with firefox or starting other programs ! The settings : resolutions of laptopscreenplay and TV are the same and I did not change the colour profile as well . My laptop screen is HD+ truebright (1600x900) and my TV SAmsung 1280x720 I have no idea what to do my HDMI connection to make right with the colours! How can I fix this situation to gain a stable colouring ?

I seriously need some advice on getting MCTS certified (Windows Communication Foundation Development) I just cannot go to a MS certification courses as they are very expensive here and far from my hometown. I want to self educate myself and I don't know where to start with. My problem is finding good study materials and sample exam questions. I haven't taken any Microsoft exams before so I have got no idea what they would ask me on the exam (70-513). Can anyone give me some ideas on how to start from scratch?   I am developing a web app with an ASP server side and I use an iframe for data push. An ASP handler flushes every once in a while some javascript to the iframe: context.Response.Write("<script language='javascript'>top.update('lala');</script>"); context.Response.Flush(); My problem is that sometimes, when I receive the data, I don't get the full text. For example I will receive this : update('lala'); One workaround I have is to have a thread flushing '..........' every 500ms. (Then I will receive script...... which will complete my javascript.) However I am sure there must be a way to have Response.Flush() sending the whole chunk of data. Does someone have an idea on how to use properly Response.Flush() ? Thank you!

• Audio codec consuming high battery power

  My powertop reports this for the two audio codec components. 4.85 W 100.0% Device Audio codec hwC0D3: Intel 4.85 W 100.0% Device Audio codec hwC0D0: Realtek I think 10 W for audio is too high. Can somebody please suggest me a way to reduce the power consumption? It'd be nice if someone could educate me on this, I have an idea about codecs in general but I have no clue about their internals? Why is it that these two components keep running always even when I am not listening to audio?

No code in specific, but rather, just a general idea of how a collision engine does what it does, constantly refreshing the points of an object and comparing it to other objects? (see, I have the general gist of it here.) A collision engine is basically an engine used in games (generally) so that your player (call him Bob), whenever bob moves into a wall, Bob stops, Bob does not walk through the wall. They also generally handle the gravity in a game and environmental things like that.

• Dynamic MMap ran out of room when trying to sudo apt-get anything

  I was having an error in Update Manager that asks me to do a partial upgrade and it fails. Now I can't sudo apt-get install anything. I tried to fix it, and now I can't sudo apt-get anything. Every time, I get this output: Reading package lists... Error! E: Dynamic MMap ran out of room. Please increase the size of APT::Cache-Limit. Current value: 25165824. (man 5 apt.conf) E: Error occurred while processing libuptimed0 (NewVersion1) E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_lucid_universe_binary-i386_Packages W: Unable to munmap E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. I have no idea why this is happening or how to fix it, and I fear that if I try something that probably doesn't work that it will make my problem worse. (Just for reference I am currently running 10.04 (Lucid) on my machine.)

• What impact would a young developer in a consultancy struggling on a project have?

  I am a youngish developer (working for 3 yrs). I took a job 3 months ago as an IT consultant (for the first time, I'm a consultant). In my first project, all went will till the later stages where I ran into problems with Windows/WMI (lack of documentation etc). As important as it is to not leave surprises for the client, this did happen. I was supposed to go back to finish the project about a month and a half ago, after getting a date scheduled, but this did not happen either. The project (code) was slightly rushed too and went through QA (no idea what the results are). My probation review is in a few weeks time, and I was wondering, what sort of impact would this have? My manager hasn't mentioned this project to me and apart from this, everything's been ok and he has even said, at the beginning, if you are tight on time just ask for more, so he has been accomodating (At this time, I was doing well, the problems came later).

• Why my domain redirect on Google Apps is returning 404?

  I have a configuration in the Google Apps Control Panel (dcc.securepaynet.net) to redirect <tombrito.com to <http://buscatextual.cnpq.br/buscatextual/visualizacv.do?id=K4499244H9. It worked fine until some days ago, but now it's returning 404. If you access tombrito.com you can see the favicon in the title of the browser tab, but the page shows a 404 error. The target page <http://buscatextual.cnpq.br/buscatextual/visualizacv.do?id=K4499244H9 is fine, it's only some problem with my redirect. Any idea what's wrong here?

• Love2D engine for Lua; What about 3D?

  Lua has been really awesome to learn, it's so simple. I really enjoy scripting languages, and I had an equally enjoyable time learning Python. The Love engine, http://love2d.org/, is really awesome, but I'm looking for something that can handle 3D as well. Is there anything that accommodates 3D in Lua? • Why should I adopt MVC?

  I decided to get my hands wet and got the YII framework for PHP. I created my first application, then created new controller, model and view. Connected to database, got my record passed from controller to the view and printed the hello world. I am confused now. If I have to do the same thing for each page, this seems like a nightmare to me. In each controller I have to do a lot of same operations - declare variables, and pass them to views. I also need to create models for each page and this is all confusing to me. In my idea the main goal of development is to avoid duplication, but what I see here is lots and lots of duplicated code. Please advise and clarify. Maybe you could suggest a good reading about MVC and coding patterns and best practices in MVC. Because so far, it takes much more time to create a small site using MVC than using my own programming schema.

Suppose my current "open with" list is like below -- application z application y application x But I want it to be like -- application x application y application z i.e. I want to change the order of the list. I know that I can fix a "default program" for a particular file, but that's not what I am looking for. • Projectiles in tile mapped turn-based tactics game?

  I am planning to make a Laser Squad clone and I think I have most of the aspects covered. But the major headache is the projectiles shot/thrown. The easy way would be to figure out the probability of hit and just mark miss/hit. But I want to be able to have the projectile to hit something eventually (collateral damage!). Currently everything is flat 2D tile map and there would be full (wall, door) and half height (desk, chair, window) obstacles. My idea is to draw an imaginary line from the shooter to the target and add some horizontal&vertical error based on the player skills. Then I would trace the modified path until it hits something. This is basically what the original Laser Squad seems to do. Can you recommend any algorithms or other approaches for this?

  Current configuration file is as follows: mainwindow.title = 'test' mainwindow.position.x = 100 mainwindow.position.y = 200 mainwindow.button.label = 'apply' mainwindow.button.size.x = 100 mainwindow.button.size.y = 30 logger.datarate = 100 logger.enable = True logger.filename = './test.log' This is read with python to a nested dictionary: { 'mainwindow':{ 'button':{ 'label': {'value':'apply'}, ... }, 'logger':{ datarate: {'value': 100}, enable: {'value': True}, filename: {'value': './test.log'} }, ... } Is there a better way of doing this? The idea is to get XML type of behavior and avoid XML as long as possible. The end user is assumed almost totally computer illiterate and basically uses notepad and copy-paste. Thus the python standard "header + variables" type is considered too difficult. The dummy user edits the config file, able programmers handle the dictionaries. Nested dictionary is chosen for easy splitting (logger does not need or even cannot have/edit mainwindow parameters).

• Packaging a web application for deploying at customer site

  I want to develop a django webapp that would get deployed at the customer site. The web app would run in a private cloud environment (ESX server here) of the customer. My web app would use a mysql database. The problem is I would not have direct access/control of the webapp. My question is, how to package such a web application with it's database and other entities so that it's easier to upgrade/update the app and it's database in future. Right now the idea I have is that I would provide a vm with the django app and database setup. The customer can just start the vm and he would have the webapp running. What are the other options I should consider?

I know some basic anatomy as you can see by the picture but I have no idea how I will make draw the pics for animation of the character walking, attacking with his sword and protecting himself with shield. Is there any anatomy reference for 2d game out there, book or anything else? for your information, I did try to find but all of stuff I found are very amateur and incomplete The picture was my attempt of creating a example of the character walking, which I'm not happy with please help, thanks Update: Since I am in a hurry I decided I would copy the anatomy from other 2d games, it is not that clean but at least I wanna be able to start it. • Developing an online email service [closed]

  I am interested in developing an online email service (e.g. Gmail, Hotmail, but on a much smaller scale) allowing people to sign up for free email addresses on my domain. The domain in question is already purchased, but I have no idea how to even start. I was hoping to code this using a Ruby framework such as Rails or Sinatra. Firstly, are there any libraries/pre-made solutions to this problem that exist already that would be easy enough to just plug-in to my own site? • Cannot access BIOS on a Lenovo U410

  I recently took a step into Linux on my Lenovo Idea pad U410; after a couple hours I managed to get it installed with the drivers. However now I no longer have the ability to access the BIOS. I tried the usual FN+F2, F2,F1,Del,Tab,F12,F11; all to no avail. I was wondering is there something different to be done running Ubuntu? I know that the BIOS would generally not be affected by the OS. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  Hello, I need help with compiling midnight commander so that I can make some changes (for educational purposes). Or even creating the make files. After downloading latest version from git. I try to perform ./autogen.sh . • several subdomains pointing to one folder. fasthosts problem

  I have a asp.net website (e.g. www.website.com). The idea is that you will go to the url 'yourname.website.com' and my site will request the name from the sub domain, process it and change the content accordingly. So, I purchased my fasthosts hosting package and created a sub domain which points to a folder within my site. e.g. 'www.website.com/folder'. However, when i now go to the url 'yourname.website.com' it is immediately redirected to 'website.com/folder'. this means I cannot request the subdomain from the url because it has been lost. I have tried contacting these guys but they don't understand and keep going on about some sort of redirect script (although i don't see how any further redirects can solve my problem). Is there something I am missing here? Any suggests or help would be much appreciated!

• 'Invalid or corrupt kernel image' error while booting from USB stick

  I got the Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit edition and i used Unetbootin to write the ISO to a usb stick.After that i tried to boot from the stick,having changed the BIOS boot settings,and when the first interface shows up with the choices of istallation,whatever choice i select i got the message"invalid or corrupt kernel image".I use a netbook with windows 7 on it.I tried different usb sticks but same again.I also tried Universal USB installer instead of Unetbootin but same again.Any idea of what happens?I am using ASUS 1000H.The USB doesn't work in one more PC i tried to,but i also tried a second USB to both of the two computers and same again. I downloaded the ISO image once again and follow the same procedure but same again
