• Utility to add visual effects to Windows

  I have no idea how to go about looking for this utility, so I though I would ask here. I recall a small utility that would add Compiz like effects on Windows. It was relatively small, and was released a few years ago. Does anyone know what it was called, and where I can get it? EDIT: It does not add the desktop cube or window switchers. It is more like the Compiz panel, where you can check/uncheck the effects that you want. The effects are applied to windows, and is stuff like fade, blur, etc.

• cannot connect to MS FTP 7.5 on Windows 2008 on Amazon EC2 instance

  I have just installed the MS FTP 7.5 upgrade on my Windows 2008 Server (Service Pack 2) running on an Amazon EC2 instance. In the FTP Firewall Support settings for the server in IIS Manager I have set up the passive port range 45001 - 45005 and also set the External Firewall IP address to match the assigned Amazon Elastic IP address. Using the AWS Console I changed the Security Group for the server to allow access to the server through ports 21 and 45001 through 45005. Using an FTP client (either the command line FTP client or Windows Explorer) on the Amazon server I can connect to the FTP server but I cannot connect with an external FTP client. When I checked to see which ports were open on the server using Shields Up it shows that port 21 is open but ports 45001 to 45005 are closed. I assume I'm missing something. Any help greatly appreciated.

• Built-in webcam on Asus laptop missing under imaging devices in Windows 7

  My built-in webcam for U43JC Asus laptop (Windows 7 32 bit) did not work, saying The camera is being used by another program. I searched on the net to solve the problem and the solution that seemed to be working was to remove usb2.0 uvc 1.3m webcam and restart the computer and the webcam will automatically re-install. However, not only did the webcam not re-install automatically, but the webcam is still not working. Things have gotten only worse that now I'm missing the webcam under Imaging Devices. I even tried recovering Windows to the factory state, however, the webcam was still missing. What can I do to restore my usb2.0 uvc 1.3m webcam?

Why can't windows? Edit: Although the default number of FATS is 2 I tried adding -f 2 [number-of-FATs] since this is actually being done by busybox on an embedded platform but this didn't help. I understand the Linux MS-DOS file system does not support more than 2 FATs but there are only 2 on this target (the boot is also FAT which is visible), along with and EXT3 (on p2) for the root file system.

In our environment the end user Remote Desktop Client settings take precedence. If printing is disabled on the client but enabled in the user's AD profile then printing is not available. Is this working by design or can I change something to allow the user environment settings in AD to override the end user settings RDC settings?

  I have a bunch of PNG files, generated from a script. They represent consecutive frames of a video sequence and I'd like to encode them into a single AVI file (or some other video format) using mencoder. What parameters should I use to ensure that the video can be viewed on a vanilla Windows XP using Windows Media Player with no extra codecs installed apart from the default ones? So far I've tried -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=wmv2 and -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=msmpeg4 with no success. (Background story: some of the people I'm collaborating with on a scientific project cannot install any codecs on their university computers without the help of the local sysadmins, who are of course not very willing to install anything. I'd like to ensure that they can also view the video files I am creating).

  I have a Windows Server 2012, blue is nice... but I'd prefer a less "eyes puncher" color, maybe gray or black... I'm a GNU/Linux sysadmin and just the fact of have the entire GUI on a server is difficult for me, so I would avoid to install the Desktop Experience feature just to change the color of the GUI. I have read here: How to change color scheme in Windows Server 2012 That once I've changed color I may remove the Desktop Experience feature and the color will not be reverted to the original. So I guess there must be a way to change the color without install this feature pack, because looks like it just adds the control panel to set the color, but not the core feature, that maybe could be accessible within some registry key. Does someone have some idea?

• Selecting primary Internet connection in Windows XP

  There is a computer that has access to the Internet both via the local network and by a GSM modem. As far as I know, when both connections are active, the modem connection is the primary one and all data is transmitted by the modem. Because of the fact that the slow modem connection is supposed to be used as a backup connection, I want Windows to use it only when the connection via LAN is unavailable. At the same time I want the GSM modem connection to be active constantly. Is it possible to make Windows not use modem connection when there is a working LAN Internet connection?   I have been reinstalling windows 7 over and over again on an ASUS P5lD2 2Gb Ram 3Ghz P4 because it ultimately looses the contents of "Turn Windows Features On or Off" after I install software like Autocad 2010 & Microsoft Office 2007. I get install errors like 1935 and 1704 on the way tried different fixes at different times (install software in different order to try and isolate problem too). Ultimately I force the software to install after much buggering and end up loosing the contents of "TWFOOO" Should I be installing some older items like .net framework 1.1, 2.0 and visual studio items like vcredist_x86.exe? getting a bit lost because of compounded problems...

  I have a Windows 7 (32-bit) box with 2 users, both admins (my wife and I are both developers). My admin account was created during Windows setup, hers was created later. Both accounts are in the same groups, yet we have VERY different permissions. In the beta and RC, both accounts worked identically (RC to RTM was a fresh install on this box, not an upgrade). I have a C:\bin folder with the sysinternals utilities and a bunch of other stuff. Running anything in there or in system32 just works on my account, on hers I get access denied errors (cannot access file or path). If I right click and try Run As Administrator, I still get the same thing!!!

After the reboot tomcat doesnt start with error: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap We reduced the parameter -Xmx1024m to -Xmx768m and now tomcat starts. • sound clipping in windows 7 64bit

  something is up with 64 bit version of windows 7. i have 2 (good pro-sumer) sound cards which i've used in other version of windows 7 w/out problems, but now it is causing severe clipping (noise, sound having little gaps surrounded by static).. the cards i am using is echo mia, and native instruments audio kontrol 1. the audio kontrol 1 is a external card, and would work ok for a few hours after rebooting, and than it would go back into clipping mode, to the point where you tube videos would not play from trying to process sound and it stopping for extended periods of time. echo mia is performing better, but there is still some clipping and distortion. the machine i use is newly built, with i7 920 64 bit cpu, 6 gigs of ram and an outdated nvidia video card (geforece 7950 gx2)

We have a Xen 3.0 host which I'm trying to install a copy of Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition onto as a guest OS - but the install hangs at the "Starting Windows" screen when it starts running the installer. Is this is a known issue with the version of Xen we're running (I know it's positively ancient)? Is there a workaround for it at all? • Strip my windows NTFS disk of all ACLs

  When you purchase a windows PC nowadays, you don't actually "own" the whole disk... There are so many ACLs on each folder that there are portions of it you actually can access only through a complex sequence of actions requiring skills well beyond the average PC user. You have to drill down to deeply buried dialog boxes accessible through concealed buttons. You have to understand at which level of the hierarchy you have to take ownership, remove ACLs etc... Yet when you think of it, that's your PC, that's what the "P" of PC originally stand for... So I'm toying with the idea of just stripping the disk of all ACLs I just purchased and leave standard file protections do the basic protection work... Just like previous century Windows used to do... (before I chmod -R 777 ;-) Has anybody done that already and nevertheless survived in reasonably good shape for a reasonable amount of time ? Any technical advice to do that ? Powershell script ? basic script using iCACLS ?

After the switch was complete and some configurations were changed around we are running into what appear to be some bottlenecks in the network speed.   I have Windows 7 installed in my system. When I originally partitioned it I made 3 partitions and 16 gb space as unallocated. Later I tried to create a partition using this free space using diskmanagement tool. It shows free space as unusabe space and the only one option available is to make it as a simple partition. Unfortunately I made it as simple partition and all my partitions converted to simple dynamic partition. Now after reboot the OS is not loading. I tried to reinstall the OS by formatting the C drive, but it doesn't work. Now I can't load the OS properly. How can I install Windows 7 on my system without losing my data on the other two drives?

  I threw out a Windows XP machine a while ago (the motherboard failed). I kept the hard drive and the XP installation media. Problem is the license key was on a sticker on the machine - doh! The original manufacturer has gone bust (Evesham) and I suspect that Microsoft will be of little help. Is there any easy way to get the license key off the hard disk? • Trouble accessing network drives in Windows 7

  Hi, Recently purchased a LaCiE network drive. Connected it to my router, configured it, added a user for myself. Installed the "Network Assistant" that came with it - no problem. Went to My Computer Network, found the network drive - was prompted for a login/password to see the contents, types \user and password (leading slash to get rid of DOMAIN) and accesses contents. There is one open share that I can access/mount without problem and there's another share with my user name as set-up via the network drive's web-based config. Double-clicked on that, prompted again. user/password doesn't work! It says I have no permissions but the user/pass combination is PERFECT. Some Windows Vista posts talk about a Local Security Policy menu - but that's nowhere to be found. Any ideas? (Windows 7 Professional BTW).

  Hi guys, I have a time machine to backup my mac book pro. All work fine with it. Now, my girlfriend have a PC on windows 7. She wants to backup her PC with cobian backup on the time machine. But her PC doesn't see the time capsule, so it's impossible to connect it. The Time capsule is connected on my box adsl with wifi and the mac and the pc are connected on the box with wifi. Why windows doesn't see the TC ? I installed "bonjour" on the PC but nothing worked. Thanks for your help.
