• Windows Domain Controller: Create a test environment from a production environment

  I need to create a working test environment of a domain we have. I need to have all the data from the production environment in the test environment. What is the best way to go about doing this? Here are some ideas I have but I am not sure if there is a better/recommended way of doing this. Use Vmware converter to create a VM of one of the production DCs create a VM and promo it on the real domain and move the vm to my test environment. use some kind of backup utility to backup the domain info and restore it to my vm I created. Thanks in advance for any help!

• Strange error when Bootcamp attempts to create partition for Windows

  I get a strange error when I tell Bootcamp to create a partition for Windows. I get to the Create a Partition stage. I select 20GB for Windows leaving 91GB (39GB free) for OS X. I then click Partition and it gives me the following error The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again. My disk is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), I have closed all applications (besides Bootcamp Assistant) and I have even restarted and tried again to see if that might help. Nothing. I can't get it to partition. I also tried to create the partition using Disk Utility and I got the following error Partition failed Partition failed with the error: Could not modify partition map because filesystem verification failed Any ideas? BTW - I am running OS X 10.6.2

• Eee PC - Create USB Recovery Drive w/ Files Copied From Recovery Partition

  I have an Eee PC 1005HAB whose hard disk has failed. I have no recovery CD/DVD, but I did previously back up the contents of the recovery partition, and would like to use them to create a bootable USB to reinstall the factory settings on the new hard drive. Since I simply copied all the files in the recovery partition, rather than hitting F9 during boot and running through the process to create a recovery disk or drive, how do I now use the files to create a bootable USB drive that will do the recovery? In the BIOS I have disabled boot booster and set external drives to the top of the boot priority, but simply copying all the recovery partion files to a usb doesn't allow it to be booted from. I've downloaded the HP utility for creating bootable USB drives and have tried using it to make the USB drive bootable, but I'm not sure what to do with the ghost image and utilities from the recovery partition to get the process to start properly.   I am familiar with adding Groups with the GUI in MAC OS X, but I am trying to do it via SSH to a computer I remotely manage as a production server. I want to create / modify some of my users for a particular directory by creating a new group. In Another helpful serverfault post, I see that I need to add the users to the group name at /Groups/foo, however my system's Groups folder does not exist... Does Mac OS X create the Groups directory only when you actually create the group – if there do not already exist any groups on the Machine? Is this something that I can do simply using: mkdir "Groups" Or maybe I'm wrong altogether. Any pointers for how to go about this with Unix? – I should note also that this group will be used to manage the access to a directory on my server via an .htaccess file. Thanks!

• Create and Utilize a Vista VHD via Windows 7

  I have a windows 7 base install and a windows 7 vhd. I am attempting to create the scenario where when I boot up I have the option of loading the windows 7 base, the windows 7 vhd or a vista vhd. I used virtual PC to create a vista vhd and then used bcdedit to set up that vhd as an option on start up. When I select that option though it goes to a repairing installation screen, fails and asks to restart (repeats if i try and select that option again). Anyone know either a) what is happening in my situation and what i can do to fix it or b) a good tutorial/reference on how to create and use a vista vhd from windows 7

  I'm new to Chef and I think I'm missing something in reading the docs. I want to create servers using knife server create (options) but can't seem to find fully complete documentation on the options. Specifically, how do I find a mapping of server flavors to whatever knife is looking for? Given the official wiki entry for "Launch Cloud Instances with Knife," the following is an example server creation on Rackspace: knife rackspace server create 'role[webserver]' --server-name server01 --image 49 --flavor 2 Likewise, on the Knife Man Page, there are commands for EC2 server images (using --d --distro DISTRO) and for Slicehost servers (using -f --flavor FLAVOR) However, what none of the documentation I've found describes is how to translate what I want to build on Rackspace ("I want Ubuntu 10.04 LTS") to what the integer entry that knife is seeking. It strikes me that, given the lack of a description in the documentation for how to find the flavor, this should be obvious. Thus, I think I'm missing something.

  I've setup a shared mailbox on our Exchange 2010/SBS2011 server. I've added some users as Full permission-users on this mailbox, and when they open Outlook/login to OWA the mailbox is automatically opened. Great stuff. However, only the Inbox folder is visible, and the alternative to create a folder is grayed out. If they open the mailbox explicitly (for instance in OWA by clicking open other user's mailbox) they can see other folders, as well as create new ones. What configuration is needed to be able to view and create subfolders directly?

  I would like to create reusable fields that I can type in, then reuse those fields throughout the document without having to retype them. As an example, I have a cover sheet that contains "Title", "Document ID", "Version Number", and "Published Date". I used the MACROBUTTON trick to create a field that someone can just click on and type, but I don't see how I can re-use what is typed in other parts of the document (such as putting the Document title in the header). I've found something called "fill-in" fields, which don't seem to be what i'm looking for, and "ASK" fields, but that creates a dialog that you have to enter the information into. I'm trying to create a generic template for my documentation needs. Can anyone suggest a method to do what I am looking for?

  I'm looking for software to create street map images that show the route from address 1 to address 2. It needs to be able to create the map images from either a database file that contains the addresses, a delimited text file that lists the addresses to route in each row, or an Excel file. I need to do this to create custom maps in bulk- 500 to 20,000 quantity from the data file. The purpose is to provide a map with a route from a location (address 1) to a retail store (address 2). The maps will be printed on a postcard. I have the data. I just need the mapping software. Is there software available that can do this?

  We are running a win 2008 core host in a HyperV role. We have expanded the logical drive on a RAID 1+0 array belonging to the server, as we needed more space. We have two data partitions D: and E: I want to expand them both so they use all space, and are equally sized. There is data on all partitions, although E is not in live use (so files can be moved and copied from it. Current: What I want- temporary Partition (F:) at end of drive: I am going to create a temporary partition F: so I can move the files from E: onto it, then delete E:, expand D: to the desired size, then rename F: to E: To do this I need to create F: from the end of the drive, ie. have unused space between E: and F: tl;dr How do I create a partition with a large offset in Windows server?

• Unable to mount Amazon Public Dataset using ec2-create-volume

  I am trying to use a Public Dataset with the snapshot id of snap-­e1608d88. I am looking at these instructions, but they do not seem to help. The first suggestion there says I should click on Volumes and create a new volume, set it's size and availability zone, as well as specifying the snapshot id. The problem is, snapshot id is a dropdown, not a text field, and there are over 100 options in the dropdown. Next I installed the ec2 command line tools and tried to run the ec2-create-volume command. For my first attempt I tried ec2-create-volume --snapshot snap-­e1608d88 --availability-zone us-east-1 but that gave output indicating I need to provide a certificate with the --cert switch. Which certficate exactly? I tried my SSH cert at ~/.ssh/id_rsa. No dice. I got the following Java error: "org.codehaus.xfire.fault.XFireFault: General security error;"

  I am trying to setup a loadBalancer on AWS. The A-Record it gave me looks like myLoadBalancer-**********.us-east-1.elb.amazonaws.com however when i try to put that in my domain registrars A-Record, i get an errorIP address is not valid. Must be of type x.x.x.x where x is 0-255. amazons solution is you should create a CNAME record for the LoadBalancer DNS name, or use Amazon Route 53 to create a hosted zone. route 53 gives me DNS numbers but if i use that then my email doesnt work from the registrar. question: is there a way to use route 53 and retain my emails? or should i create a CNAME record for the LoadBalancer DNS name, if so how do i do this ... not sure what this means?

  Hi, I'm Running Mysql on ubuntu 9.10, the process of Mysql is running as root, I'm using root account when logging to Mysql, which I gave all privileges, I'm using my own db(not mysql), I can create a table, but when i try to create Temporary table i get this error: ERROR 1005 (HY000): Can't create table 'tmp' (errno: 13) For this query: CREATE TEMPORARY TABLE tmp (id int); I've plenty of space in my hard drive, all permissions are granted(also var/lib/mysql have mysql permissions).   From a practical standpoint, is there any real-world difference between Read/Write permissions and Create/Read/Update/Delete permissions? It would seem that if a user had the ability to 'create', he should always have the ability to 'update' or 'delete'? If this is correct, then read/write should always be sufficient, and there is no need to store separate Create/Read/Update/Delete permissions? Are there any real-world use cases in which a user should be given permissions to create but not update, or update but not delete, etc...?
