  • My First 5K, the recap.

    It was a nice day to be outside (and trust me, those aren't words you'll hear from me often.) I got to the site around 7:45, hit the pre-reg table and got my number along with a goody bag full of coupons for racing gear, a water bottle and a tshirt. Oh and a map. Stashed all that stuff in the jeep, emptied my pockets of everything but my iPhone and my jeep key, and proceeded to walk around for a bit as people started showing up and signing in. It was fairly breezy, and there was definitely a storm coming... but it was anyone's guess on when it would actually arrive. It was interesting to see everyone who was participating. If I had to guess, I would say the event was 60-70% women, with a pretty broad distribution of age... as young as 13 to well over 60 (in both genders.) I don't know exactly how many folks were there, but it was well over 300. Eventually it was time to kick things off, and everyone made their way to the start line. All of the 5k and 10k runners were mixed together, starting at the same time. All the walkers and the people with strollers or dogs were in the back. It was pretty chaotic at first, once things started, but it thinned out fairly quickly. The 10k people and the hardcore runners sped ahead of everyone else and the walkers gradually lagged behind. The 5K course was pretty nice, winding around a lake down in Eden Prairie. The 10K course overlapped most of ours, but branched off a couple times too. I didn't run the whole time, but I started the race running and I ended it running, and did a mix of walking and running along the way. I met my goals, which were a) don't ever stop and b) don't be last. The weather managed to hold out for the entire race. It never got too hot, there was a nice breeze and it was mostly overcast. Pretty much perfect in my book. About 20-30 minutes after I left, the rain came down pretty hard. I had a good time, and will most likely do more of them. We'll see.

  • Android app crashes on emulator - logCat shows no errors

    I have just added the SherlockActionBar library to my android project. After some small changes (FragmentActivity - SherlockFragmentActivity, getActionBar() - getSupportActionBar(), imports) it all compiled nicely. After I run the app, however, the debugger stops, as though it had encountered an exception. However, there are no errors shown in the LogCat output. I just can't wrap my head around what's going on.   • Annotation Processor for Superclass Sensitive Actions

    Someone creating superclass sensitive actions should need to specify only the following things: The condition under which the popup menu item should be available, i.e., the condition under which the action is relevant. And, for superclass sensitive actions, the condition is the name of a superclass. I.e., if I'm creating an action that should only be invokable if the class implements "org.openide.windows.TopComponent",  then that fully qualified name is the condition. The position in the list of Java class popup menus where the new menu item should be found, relative to the existing menu items. The display name. The path to the action folder where the new action is registered in the Central Registry. The code that should be executed when the action is invoked. In other words, the code for the enablement (which, in this case, means the visibility of the popup menu item when you right-click on the Java class) should be handled generically, under the hood, and not every time all over again in each action that needs this special kind of enablement.   • Uncovering Compiler Errors in ASP.NET MVC Views

    ASPX and ASCX files are compiled on the fly when they are requested on the web server. This means it’s possible that you aren’t catching compile errors associated with your views when you build your ASP.NET MVC project in Visual Studio.  Unless you’re willing to click through your entire application, rendering each view looking for errors, you application is left a little vulnerable to user issues.  Fortunately, there’s a work around.  Open up your MVC project file in notepad or within the Visual Studio IDE by unloading the project and then editing the .csproj file (both actions are available by right-clicking on the Project Node in Solution Explorer.)  Notice the MvcBuildViews option.  It’s probably set to false.  Flip the value to true and you’ll magically start compiling your views when you build your application. <MvcBuildViews>false</MvcBuildViews> Taking this action will slow down your builds a bit, but if you’re a hack like me, it’ll probably save your day in the long run. Now you’re probably thinking, “Neat trick – how’s it work?”  Scroll down toward the bottom of your csproj file and you will notice the AfterBuild target triggers the AspNetCompiler action if the MvcBuildViews option is set to true.  <Target Name="AfterBuild" Condition="'$(MvcBuildViews)'=='true'">   <AspNetCompiler VirtualPath="temp"                   PhysicalPath="$(ProjectDir)\..\$(ProjectName)" /> </Target> Great. Let’s say you don’t want to slow down all of your builds, but you absolutely want to know if there are any compiler issues with your views before you commit your code to version control or deploy or whatever.  Here’s what you can do – change the AfterBuild condition to run if your configuration is set to Release mode.  <Target Name="AfterBuild" Condition="'$(Configuration)'=='Release'">   <!– Always pre-compile ASPX and ASCX in release mode –>   <AspNetCompiler VirtualPath="temp"                   PhysicalPath="$(ProjectDir)\..\$(ProjectName)" /> </Target> Now your debug mode builds will continue to be as fast as ever and you can quickly validate your views by building in release mode when you so choose.  There’s one little catch – this setup won’t consider the MvcBuildViews option whatsoever! So if you decide to go with this configuration, you might want to add a comment near the MvcBuildViews option letting other developers know they can change the MvcBuildViews option as much as they’d like but it’s not going to affect the AfterBuild action.  Or don’t include the comment and let your team members figure it out for themselves…

  • SQL SERVER – What are Actions in SSAS and How to Make a Reporting Action

    Actions are used for customized browsing and drilling of data for the end-user. It’s an event that a user can raise while accessing the cube data. They are used in cube browsers like excel and are triggered when a user in a client tool clicks on a particular member, level, dimension, cells or may be the cube itself.  For example a user might be able to see a reporting services report, open a web page or drill through to detailed information related to the cube data. Analysis server supports 3 types of actions :- Report Drill-through Standard Actions In this blog post, I will explain the Reporting  action. The objective of this action is to return a report with details of the product where the sales amount is greater than 1000 in cube browser analysis. You need to create a basic cube first with the facts and dimensions you want in the analysis. Following are the steps to create reporting action. Go to SQL server data tools and open the analysis services project. Navigate to actions and click on new reporting action. 2.) Specify the name of the action and choose target type as attribute members since we have to create the action on members for a attribute. 3.) Specify the Target object of your report action. Target object would be the dimension or attribute on which you want the report to appear. In our case it is product name. 4.) Next you have to define the condition on which you want the report link to appear. However, this is an optional feature. In this example we are specifying a condition, which will check if the sales amount is greater than 10,000. So, that the link appears only for those products where the defined condition is met. 5.) Next you have to specify the server name on which the report is present, report path  and the report format in which you want the report to appear. 6.) Additionally you can specify the parameters. As with conditional expression, the parameters should be a valid MDX expression. The parameter name should be same as the one defined in the report. 7.) Deploy your solution after you are done with specifying parameters and go to the cube browser. 8.) Click on the analyze in excel button, this will open your cube in excel 9.) Make an analysis which shows product names and their sales amount. 10.) Right click on a product where sales amount is greater than 10000 you will see the reporting action link. Click on that and you will be taken to your reporting services report. 11.) Clicking on the link will take you to the URL of the report. I created this report using report project wizard in SQL server data tools. So, this is how we can launch reports from a cube browser. Similarly you can open web pages, run applications and a number of  other tasks. Koenig Solutions offers SSAS training which contains all Analysis Services including Reporting in great detail.   • WiX: Prevent 32-bit installer from running on 64-bit Windows

    Hi everyone, Due to user confusion, our app requires separate installers for 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows. While the 32-bit installer runs fine on win64, it has the potential to create support headaches and we would like to prevent this from happening. I want to prevent the 32-bit MSI installer from running on 64-bit Windows machines. To that end I have the following condition: <Condition Message="You are attempting to run the 32-bit installer on a 64-bit version of Windows."> <![CDATA[Msix64 AND (NOT Win64)]]> </Condition> With the Win64 defined like this: <?if $(var.Platform) = "x64"?> <?define PlatformString = "64-bit"?> <?define Win64 ?> <?else?> <?define PlatformString = "32-bit"?> <?endif?> Thing is, I can't get this check to work right. Either it fires all the time, or none of the time. The goal is to check presence of the run-time msix64 variable against the compile-time Win64 variable and throw an error if these don't line up, but the logic is not working how I intend it to.   • Code Golf: Leibniz formula for Pi

    I recently posted one of my favourite interview whiteboard coding questions in "What's your more controversial programming opinion", which is to write a function that computes Pi using the Leibniz formula. It can be approached in a number of different ways, and the exit condition takes a bit of thought, so I thought it might make an interesting code golf question. Shortest code wins! Given that Pi can be estimated using the function 4 * (1 - 1/3 + 1/5 - 1/7 + ...) with more terms giving greater accuracy, write a function that calculates Pi to within 0.00001. Edit: 3 Jan 2008 As suggested in the comments I changed the exit condition to be within 0.00001 as that's what I really meant (an accuracy 5 decimal places is much harder due to rounding and so I wouldn't want to ask that in an interview, whereas within 0.00001 is an easier to understand and implement exit condition). Also, to answer the comments, I guess my intention was that the solution should compute the number of iterations, or check when it had done enough, but there's nothing to prevent you from pre-computing the number of iterations and using that number. I really asked the question out of interest to see what people would come up with.

  • Rails add a param to the end of a search query

    Hello, I am trying to implement a sort on the returned results of a search with rails. Filter by: 'recent' % | 'lowest_price' % | 'highest_price' % here are my links. I would like to add a filter to the end of my search query. So for example, I submit a search and I get back results and in my url I have http://localhost:3000/junks?search=handbag&condition=&category=&main_submit=Go! I would then like the user to be able to click one of the above links and have the page come back with a new query (i have this set up in the controller like such) con_id = params[:condition] if params[:category].nil? || params[:category].empty? cat_id = params[:category] results = Junk.search params[:search], :with => { :category_id => cat_id, :condition_id => con_id } case params[:filter] when "lowest_price" @junks = results.lowest_price.paginate :page => params[:page], :per_page => 12 when "highest_price" @junks = results.highest_price.paginate :page => params[:page], :per_page => 12 else @junks = results.paginate :page => params[:page], :per_page => 12 end else I would like the user to be able to click on of the above links and append a filter param to the end of the search query so that my controller can pick it up and call the correct database queries as seen in the case statement above. I'm guessing the url will look like this http://localhost:3000/junks?search=handbag&condition=&category=&main_submit=Go!&filter="lowest_price" How can I do this? Is there a better way?
