• How can I tell which laptop touch-screens work well with a stylus (for drawing/taking notes)?

  I'm looking for a laptop with a touch-screen and stylus for drawing/note-taking. I've read the difference between the different kinds of styluses, but that's only half the story - what about the touch-screen? How do I know if the touch-screen supports "palm-rejection"? Or if the included stylus is a capacitive stylus or a "Wacom digitizer"? Or if the screen will even support Wacom? How can I tell how accurate the touch-screen is (from my testing, some definitely seem to have higher "resolution" than others)? Is there anything else I should be looking at? I don't see any of this information on, for instance, the Newegg specs page for a laptop.

• No Cure for a Slow Computer?

  I have a laptop with the following specs: 2.2gHz dual-core processor. 4gb of DDR2 Ram. 180gb HDD space. I have tried everything. I have reinstalled the OS. Installed Ubuntu with Lubuntu, LXDE, Gnome Classic, Unity 2D desktop. I have even tried downgrading to XP with all non-critical processes and services turned off. Even with the most stripped down version of Ubuntu it heats up and the fan starts churning. I'm out of ideas. I have tried everything. If you have any tips, please help. :'(

Membase also does not have secondary index (as far as I know). MongoDB and MySQL memory engine have table-level locks. What engine will fit our use case?

• Slow running Ubuntu 10.10 laptop

  Hello everyone. I have a slow computer. When I click on an icon say Firefox it can take 10 seconds to load. when I minimize and maximize windows you can see it happening. I get "ghost" screens where you see the window outline of the box but nothing in it or it may be white. The laptop is two years old and has these specs: Intel core two duo 2.8GHZ CPU 4GB RAM 500GB HDD 512MB Nvidia 8600GT video Realtek HD audio What is going on and where should I start looking for issues? Ubuntu 10.10 was upgraded from 10.04LTS following the instructions from the Ubuntu Wiki and it was done through the update manager GUI, not the CLI. Thanks for the help.

• tomcat processParameters complains about "invalid chunk ignored"

  I am hosting a software system running under tomcat for quite a number of customers. Some of these send invalid URLs as request. These URLs may contain "&=" or "&&", which is not within the http specs. Now my tomcat complains about the following: "08.09.2010 12:36:04 org.apache.tomcat.util.http.Parameters processParameters WARNING: Parameters: Invalid chunk '' ignored." It is no problem, as is doesn't affect the operation in any way. Only problem ist that the tomcat/logs/catalina.out is growing with every single request. In the net you can find suggestions like: - Fix your URLs (which I can't, as it is the customers who send them) - Raise tomcats log level to ERROR (which I don't want to do, as it would suppress INFO like "INFO: Reloading context [/ContextName]" and other stuff you want to know. - Redirect the log to the application log (which won't solve the problem, as the message will flood just another log) Does anyone know how to solve the problem at its ROOT, which means: Tell tomcat not to complain about invalid request parameters any longer

• When computer turns on: keyboard/mouse/monitor don't work?

  the computer is barely good,at least i think..features Intel core 2 4 GB ram Nvidia Radeon 9600 512 mb Gigabite motherboad (the others i can't remember).. Used this computer for 3 years with no problem...The problem started one day after while it froze everything, then I shut down with removing the electricity power. A few hours later, I tried to log in to the computer but nothing moved. Nor keyboard nor mouse nor monitor worked, I was thinking that should be a delay so I left it some time. After a minute it turned off without my help around 30 seconds then it turned on automatically, but was the same problem like before and it goes again and again...any suggestions? If more info/specs required, let me know.

  I have a website, and I want to host it on my own computer, but I'm wondering if it's good enough. The website check`s if the user is logged in and then displays 15 items (title, description) from a mysql database and the rating (stored in another database) and the comments (another database) for each item. It also displays some stats (number of items, comments). I also have an image for each item. My specs are: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ 2.90 GHz RAM memory: 4.00GB Windows 7 64bit So what do you think, how much visitors and items could it handle (at once or daily) ? My internet connection is good, around 7-10 mb upload and same download speed

  Possible Duplicate: How do you do Load Testing and Capacity Planning for Web Sites I’m working on a community platform writen in PHP, MySQL. I have some questions about the server usage maybe someone can help me out. The community is based on JQuery with many ajax requests to update content. It makes 5 - 10 AJAX(Json, GET, POST) requests every 5 seconds, the requests fetch user data like user notifications and messages by doing mySQL queries. I wonder how a server will handle this when there are for more than 5000 users online. Then it will be 50.000 requests every 5 seconds, what kind of server you need to handle this? Or maybe even more, when there are 15.000 users online, 150.000 requests every 5 seconds. My webserver have the following specs. Xeon Quad 2048MB 5000GB traffic Will it be good enough, and for how many users? Anyone can help me out or know where to find such information, like make a calculation?

• High system cpu load (%sys), system locks

  For the last two weeks we are having intermittent severe spikes in system cpu usage (shown as %sys), which last for maybe half a minute, locking most processes, including ssh. I've been trying to figure this out, but atop doesn't show anything relevant (system usage for processes it shows is insignificant), spikes are intermittent and I could not reproduce the spike using any workload for the web application this webserver hosts. If you have any ideas on how to debug high %sys and (sometimes) %si CPU usage, please share them. System specs (don't know if any of this is relevant): Dedicated server, CentOS 6, core i7 950, consistent 4 to 8 GB RAM free at any time, hard drives are in RAID-1. Additional info: dmesg output doesn't change between spikes /var/log/messages doesn't change between spikes Here is cat /proc/vmstat Here is output of mpstat 1 during a typical spike Add 07.11.11: looks like simple reboot restored system state, and we might never know what caused the disturbance in first place.

  I dont need wireless. I am expecting very heavy traffic, with possibly thousands of tcp connections open at one time. This would require that the router has good hardware. I also need to limit the different services i will provide. Lets say i need to guarantee 60% of all the bandwidth to HTTP, 10% FTP, and 10% for Mail... So the router software must have flexible QoS options as well. I don't know which one to chooose, because this information is usually not given on the router specs.

  I am currently testing openstack for windows guests (XP and 7). I have deployed openstack "all in one" on system with following specs Processor corei5. (4 physical cores and 8 Threads with HT Technology) RAM 8 GB. HD 500 GB. I have created 4 windows xp guests with 512MB RAM and 1VCPU. On each windows guest i have installed visual studio 2008 only. In nova.conf CPU Over-Commit ratio is 2 for better performance (as mentioned in openstack operation guide). Using KVM as hyerpvisor. I have observed poor performance when simultaneously using visual studio in four windows instances. How i can improve performance ? Should i use KVM or Hyper-V ? or any other suggestion ?

• Why do I have inconsistent network issues with my laptop's wireless?

  I'm having trouble with my laptop Internet connection. It's patchy at best and resets or freezes a lot. The signal strength is also random. I thought it might be a driver issue but now I don't know. Three other computers using the same wireless network run well. I've switched out wireless routers so I don't think it's the router. I thought it might be the laptop's internal wireless card but I just bought an external USB network card and I'm still having problems. • How many xml http requests is too much for a pc to handle?

  I'm running mediawiki on an apache on a regular pc running vista (don't know the specific specs, but I'm guessing at least duo core 2 2 giga hertz processor, broadband connection (500 kb/s at least, probably 1 mega). I want to use the MediaWiki api to send a lot of requests to this server. Most of the time the requests will be sent through LAN (but sometimes through the internet). I'm talking thousands of requests every few seconds at worst case. (A lot of these requests may repeat themselves, I guess some sort of cache would help) Will the server handle this, or do I need a stronger/dedicated computer? (I'm not looking for specific yes/no, but just want to get an idea as to what configuration of computer will support how many request per second) Thanks

• random hard disk errors

  For the past 2 years or so (4 year old custom build) I've been getting random moments where everything stops responding (or takes a very long time to respond) followed by I/O and hdd not detected errors on restart. To fix it, all I usually need to do is unplug my SATA cables from the hdd and mobo and plug them back in again and the problem disappears, at least for a little while (it ranges anywhere from a day to a few months time). Sometimes even a startup repair does the job. I've done multiple reformats and have also ran chkdsk more times than I can remember and both do not seem to help in the long run. Both the drives seem to be exhibiting the same problem. Have both my hdds been "dying" for the past couple of years, even though they are fully functional besides these occasional hiccups?   I want to build a small warehousing application for my company. We have a central warehouse which distributes to 8 sales points across the country. They insist on an in-house solution. I am thinking to setup a central mySQL db Linux server and have the branches connect to it to store sales. Queries to the db from the branches will be minimum, maybe 10 per hour. However I need all the branches to be able to store each sale data ( product ID, customer ID ) in the central db at peak time at most once every five minutes. My question is can I get away with simple 24mbps/768kbps DSL lines? If not what is the bandwith requirement? Can I rely on a load balancing router to combine additional lines if needed? Can you propose some server hardware specs?

• Received a RAMPAGE IV FORMULA MOBO. Possible CPU Socket problems

  I recently received a Rampage IV Formula MOBO in a trade. From everything I read online this seems like a pretty nice piece of hardware. There's one thing I'm worried about though. It appears as though the socket where the CPU goes might have some bent/missing pins. I'm not exactly a computer expert and I wanted to know if this could be any sort of problem. • Windows 8 freezes on startup when intel VT-d is enabled

  I don't know what to make of this situation: Windows 8 freezes after about 3 seconds after booting to the log in screen. The only way i have been able to avoid the freeze, is if i set VT-d disabled VT-d enabled, but Nvidia drivers uninstalled (running on integrated graphics) VT-d enabled, Nvidia drivers installed, Hyper-V feature enabled My goal is to get Windows 8 running with VMWare (ie. Hyper-V has to stay disabled), VT-d and the latest NVidia drivers. Specs: 32 GB of ram Intel Core i7-2760QM NVidia Quadro 1000M Intel 520 SSD 480GB Maybe somebody has experience with this kind of a situation ?

• Why does using 2 memory sticks cause my computer to crash?

  My computer randomly crashes when playing games, but if I remove one memory stick (it does not matter which one I remove), it does not crash anymore. Memory tests do not find errors, I just put in a new power supply (650W), I only have 1 graphics card, so why is this happening? BTW, they are the same memory, same vendor same specs, everything I bought it together (2x2GB) My motherboard is a Asus P5Q Pro, so it supports both dual channel and more than 4gb. Switching slots does nothing, as long as I don't use more than 1 I'm fine.

• Computer restarts infinitely after Bios/Motherboard screen

  Like every morning I turn on my computer (which is kinda new and only couple months old) and I never had any issue with it until now. It starts booting, shows that very first screen which has some motherboard picture and stuff and then it show which buttons to press to enter BIOS and etc. Then it suddenly restarted and after that just kept restarting every 3-5 seconds forever. What could that be? I unplugged power cable, checked all the cables, moved a case, it had some wires stuck under it, blew some dust (but didn't open the case yet) and I tried to boot again and it booted successfully and I am writing this issue now. My specs: i3-3220 3.30Ghz 8GB DDR3 RAM 1TB HDD GeForce GTX 650 Windows 8 x64 I also recently upgraded my security software (that's the most recent thing I did) and it includes ZoneAlarm firewall, Comodo Antivirus and Spybot Search & Destroy.   My computer started to freeze randomly. I was pretty sure it was the hard drive that was starting to fail. Before I could change it, the motherboard was completely dead. I bought the same one and reinstall it. Everything went working well until my computer started to freeze again and doing the same problem has before. Bearing in mind 5850's are sort of hard to come buy now as they are not stocked in shops usually, which means they have to be bought second hand.

  Hello everyone i'm a little worry about my graphic card. before I get into that I will tell you my system specs. I have intel dx58so mainboard, 6gb corsair xms ddr3 ram, intel i7 960 cpu, and ati hd 5970. I'm also using a coolmaster haf92 case. My OS is vista X64. Here is my issue when I type in dxdiag in (Start Search) and I look into display. I see in (approx total memory) 716mb graphic memory. The ati hd 5970 is a 2gb graphic card. • Best Linux distro for media server on older box

  I have an older machine with these specs: CPU: AMD Athlon X2 @ 2,8 Ghz, 2MB L2 RAM: 4 GB DDR2@ 800 Mhz GPU: Asus 4890 TOP 1 GB I want to turn the machine into a media server via XBMC (so good video and wireless peripherial driver support would also be a plus), but I also want to use it as an OpenVPN server so I can tunnel RDP to my other Windows machine in the network.
