• Sudden restart when Ubuntu almost loaded from disc.

  Hi all, Here are the specs beforehand: ECS K7SEM motherboard AMD Duron 900MHz 2x 256MB PC133 SDRAM The Best Power MT-500P 500W PSU Integrated graphics No hard drive DVD-ROM - will update with brand & model Now, I was starting up this machine after it was left outside for 3 months in winter weather. (I got this from a friend.) I was able to get it started and tried to load Ubuntu from the DVD-ROM. It was fairly successful and got up to the point when the Ubuntu logo is glowing. However, when Ubuntu was about to go to the main screen, the computer crashed and automatically rebooted. Is there any reason why this is happening? Also, I should mention that when I try to hit Delete on the BIOS screen to go to Setup, it only shows a screen with four lines saying something Novell something... I will edit with exact lines. Should I be resetting the BIOS or something? Thanks in advance.

• Computer not displaying anything

  The computer in question worked last week. It's brand new, never been connected to the internet, up-to-date parts, etc. Last week, I installed some 3D software on it, then shut it down and waited for the license files that arrived this week. I've done this to 4 other PCs with the same hardware and software. I've tried: Hooking it up to 3 different monitors using different video cables 2 other graphics cards and a handful of other things like switching which port it's plugged into before and after a restart. I have the driver disc, and a windows reinstallation disc, but they won't do me any good because no display at all for any interval of time. All the fans are moving: psu, gfx, cpu etc, so I don't believe it's a power issue. Here are the specs I know of: 4GB RAM 8800 GTX 700w PSU Intel dual core (not sure of model) Anyways, I'm open to ideas.

Not too positive about the relevance of this question to Server Fault, but I'll let you guys poke around at it anyway. :) I'm trying to figure out what an accepted ratio of endpoints to concurrent calls on the "average" office PBX. I'm defining concurrent calls as any call being placed, including internal calls. I'm not going to be considering call centers into this ratio, I'll be looking at those differently, anyway. To give you guys a little history behind the question: I need this ratio to be able to figure out decent specs for a virtual PBX service I'm going to be rolling out within the upcoming months. • Computer randomly shuts down with a fading alarm power button and CD drive

  I am currently experiencing something very very odd. Having build my PC myself, I have never had any issues (or anything heat related). A few moments ago my computer shut down very randomly and everything goes blank, when I looked down on my case's power button it was fading on and off in such way I've had never seen before. I noticed the CD drive all of a sudden also started blinking randomly. What do you guys think this problem is related to? It is definitely not a overheating issue and I am pretty sure my 600 watt power supply didn't blow because right now I am able to turn it on and boot up the PC but 20 seconds later it shuts down (sometimes doesn't shut down for 2 minutes). I have no idea what this is... My specs are (built by myself): i5 3570k (unoverclocked) GTX 560ti Asrock Z77 Pro4-M motherboard 8GB Vengeance RAM 600W Corsair power supply 500GB of Seagate HD Case: Corsair Carbide 300R

• Brand new Lenovo u410 heats up around touchpad

  My Lenovo u410 started heating around the right palm rest minutes after I unpacked it! I am devastated, because I bought this for programming, and it's impossible to type on this for extended periods with the surface getting so hot. I haven't run any serious programs on it yet, so the processor has been pretty much idle. I've been Googling this problem, and found only one person who had this issue too. Is this is a defect in the product? Why aren't many others getting this problem? I bought it via newegg.com and as per their policy you can't return a product once you've opened it. Specs: Core i5, 6 GB RAM, 750 GB harddisk. Running Windows 8.

• How does the build quality of laptops compare?

  I'm looking to replace my 5 year old laptop. I want my next laptop to endure at least this long. I typically have Thunderbird, Firefox, Eclipse Java IDE, Skype, a ssh session, and Apache Tomcat running. I'm currently running Karmic Ubuntu, but am agnostic about operating system and would move to Win 7 or OS X. I frequently travel with this computer. I also value battery longevity and power conservation (if possible). Above all I'm looking to minimize cost. I think the hardware that best meets my needs is an Intel i7 processor, 8 GB RAM, 100GB @7200 rpm or SSD hardrive, and about 15 inch monitor. These specs are met by most brands. Does anyone know specific pros/cons and build quality for Macbook Pro, Lenovo Thinkpad (W510 or T510), Sony's VPC-F1190, and ASUS G Series G73JH-X1 NoteBook? Are all i7 processors created equal? Do you have other suggestion that meet my needs?

• setting up/installing/configuring nginx LEMP stack on fresh VPS server

  I need some help in settingup/installing and configuring nginx LEMP stack on a fresh new VPS I have. The specs of the CentOS 5.7 VPS are 2GB DDR3 ECC RAM(4GB burst), 1 core 1.5Ghz(3Ghz burst) and 100GB RAID 10 storage, unmetered bandwidth @ 100Mpbs all for a whopping $25/month(unbeatable, yeah I know :) Anyways I have followed this LEMP (will also need MySQL and PHP) stack guide on linode http://library.linode.com/lemp-guides/centos-5 but basically what I want is to be able to host multiple website on this webserver after everything is setup. I am used to using DirectAdmin control panel on other server and want to have things setup so I can host multiple websites - mostly wordpress and drupal themes. Lets say 10 websites on this nginx web server. So can someone please help me on what I need to do to take "full" advantage of nginx power and performance, while been able to easily manage these multiple websites (wordpress and drupal themes)?

• Does it mean video card is broken?

  Hello, I've just installed some sort of relatively old video card and now computer freezes while playing certain video games (Civilization 4, HOMM V). Some other video games with far better graphics works well (Dawn of War I). Note that "freezing" games runs nicely and smoothly for about 10-15 mins, no lag or any other indication that video card may be not good enough. And then PC suddenly freezes, nothing works but rebooting. The question is, is this a normal behavior of a video card which is simply "not good enough" for the games in question, or is there something broken? Card itself or motherboard or whatever? OS is Windows 7 if that matters, and I don't know exact videocard specs but that probably doesn't matter for this sort of question... thanks in advance!

• Benchmarks relevant for a Visual Studio .Net development workstation

  I am developing a system with Windows 7-64, Visual Studio and Sharepoint on a virtual workstation on some kind of VMWare server. The system is painfully slow, with VS lagging behind when entering code, Intellisense lagging, opening and saving files takes ages when compared to a normal budget laptop. As far as I can see the virtual machine has OK specs and does not seem to be swapping etc., and the IT dept also says that they can't see anything wrong when they're monitoring the system. As long as the problem is not well-documented, the IT dept and management does not want to throw money (=upgraded laptops) at us, so I need to show some sort of benchmark. It has been many years since I did any system benchmarking, and I don't know the current benchmark software, so my question is which benchmark will be most relevant for Visual Studio performance? Not just for compiling fast, but also to reflect the "responsiveness" of the system. Cheers, user30715

• Stuttery 1080p playback on decent system

  We have a media center system that was recently built. It works well for all types of content, however it has issues with 1080p content. 720p plays fine. I have tried VLC, ffdshow and finally, CoreAVC. CoreAVC plays the best however it still eventually loses sync due to stutter - this does not happen on other systems with the same file. Specs: Asrock 4core-2dual sata PCI Express ATI 2400 HD 1.5GB DDR 2100 Intel Pentium E5300 120GB Maxtor Diamondmax PATA Any ideas?

• Only some motherboards can support faster RAM?

  This is a question relating to one of my builds. Here are the specs: ECS P4VXASD2+ V5.0 motherboard Intel P4 Northwood 2.8 GHz (533 MHz FSB, 512 KB L2) 2x 1GB PC3200 DDR RAM Maxtor 300GB IDE HDD 16 MB NVIDIA TNT2 Pro AGP OKIA 300W ATX PSU Gigabyte 52x CD-ROM The issue right now is that I'm trying to install Windows XP from the CD drive but the computer randomly restarts partway through installation. My other build was BSODing due to RAM latency errors. This ECS board manual states that memory modules "up to 333 MHz" (i.e. PC2700) is supported. However, I am running PC3200 modules, which is clearly faster than PC2700. Would this be causing the computer from randomly restarting? EDIT 1: I also wanted to mention that my Emachines T2482 is actually running 2x 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM when it should only be supporting PC1600 and PC2100 DDR RAM. Yet there are no issues with it.

• Mixing RAM brands

  Hey guys, I'm scheduled to install a server at a colo facility tomorrow, but I've hit a snag. ESXi doesn't like the fact that I have 12GB ram in my server (8gb on one side of CPU, 4gb on the other). I currently have 3xCrucial 4gb ECC DDR3 1333mhz sticks (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001TGT7EE/ref=oss_product) and I'm planning on stopping by Fry's on the way to the colo facility so I can pick up another stick so that ESXi will install. Problem is, Fry's doesn't stock Crucial RAM. They do have a stick that I think is identical to my crucial one: http://www.frys.com/product/5915524?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG Will this be dangerous to use in my server? The specs on the RAM are the same as far as I know (ecc registered, 1333mhz, ddr3, 4gb).

• Does a Samsung G3 Station external hard drive stop working when power supply is too high?

  I have a Samsung G3 Station 2TB external hard drive (link to PDF specs here). It was working perfectly when I accidentally plugged it in my notebook's power source. The notebook's power source is 19V/3.42A. The hard drive's is 12V/2A and I know that, inside its case, there is regular 2TB SATA drive, along with some sort of adapter. Does this adapter has some kind of power protection? I opened the case and the hard drive board smells bad. Does my data is forever lost or can I replace its board?

• Modifying a gedit syntax highlighting file

  I am trying to change a highlighting file from Gedit. I have modified the file /usr/share/gtksourceview-3.0/language-specs/fortran.lang because I want to change the cases in which the editor takes a statement as a comment. The problem I have is that when I choose the new highlighting scheme nothing highlights, it just remains as plain text. The file fortran.lang was opened with su permissions and I just copy-pasted everything into a new Gedit file and later saved it as fortran_enhanced.lang in the same folder. • PostgresQL on Amazon EBS volume, realistic performance, or move to something more lightweight?

  Hi, I'm working on a little research project, currently running as an instance on ec2, and I'm hoping to figure out whether I'm going down the right path. We, like a thousand other people, are making use of some of twitters streaming feeds to do gather some data to have fun with and my db seems to be having problems keeping up, and queries take what seems to be a very long time. I'm not a DBA by trade, so I'll just dump some info here and add more if need be. System specs: ec2 xl, 15 gigs of ram ebs: 4 100 gb drives, raid 0. The stream we're getting we're looking at around 10k inserts per minute. 3 main tables, with the users we're tracking somewhere in the neighborhood of 26M rows currently. Is this amount of inserts on this hardware too much to ask out of ebs? Should take a look at some things with less overhead like mongodb?

• EEE PC 701/4G Surf Internal Drive: Is it really SSD?

  I have an old EEE PC with the 4 Gig internal drive. Everything I've read keeps saying it's an SSD drive; running lshw tells me that it's an ATA disk, Silicon Motion SM. The thing seems to be rather slow, though. I know it has a 900 Mhz Celeron processor and only 512 meg of RAM, but it seems like drive access is slow even for those specs. Does anyone know if it really has an SSD drive? I thought that compared to regular hard disks SSD's were blazing fast, and this feels like and acts like it's pulling from something more akin to an internal USB memory stick.

  What is it? And what causes it? Is it only for uncorrectable DIMM Errors(Troubleshooting DIMM errors)? When an UCE occurs, the memory controller causes an immediate reboot of the system. During reboot, the BIOS checks the Machine Check registers and determines that the previous reboot was due to an UCE, then reports this in POST after the memtest stage: A Hypertransport Sync Flood occurred on last boot 3 BIOS reports this event in the service processor’s system event log (SEL) as shown in the sample IPMItool output There are what seems to be some suggested answers to include Bad Caps Bios verisons (happens in one version not the other) Graphics card issues Lack of power to the CPU The list of possible generators seems to target everything but the computer case. • Blue screen - BCCode: 7F

  I've recently bought a refurbished Toshiba Satellite A660 11M and I get the blue screen of death appearing fairly frequently now, and I can't seem to work out why or how to prevent/cure it. Firstly I thought it was due to Zone Alarm from what I read on the net, but then I thought it was a memory issue after it crashed whilst I was running Memtest. But after I ran Memtest a second time, it completed without any errors... • How to share a VPN connection in a VMWare Guest VM with the Host

  The need - This question is relevant for all of those who want to bypass their corporate's annoying VPN, and access their work/corporate network from their private computer, especially if the corporate VPN client software can't run on their private computer. Homework: this question is very similar to this one and this one, which aren't answered :( The challange - Can't run the corporate VPN client from the private computer, so converted the work laptop to a VMWare Virtual Machine. The VPN client is working fine inside the Guest VM, now we want to share it with the Host (the private computer) The specs: * The private computer (Host OS) is Mac OS X Lion 64bit * The corporate laptop (Guest VM) is WinXP 32bit, running in Bridged network mode * The VPN client on the Guest VM is is Checkpoint SecuRemote NGX R60 HFA03 * While the VPN is running in the Guest VM, the Host can still ping the Guest and vice versa

• HP Laserjet "maintenance interval" vs "fuser life"

  I posted a question about the Laserjet 8100DN earlier here: http://serverfault.com/questions/139043/buying-an-old-laser-printer-what-will-need-to-be-replaced and from doing some more research I have a new question: I found the "maintence interval" -- "the interval at which you should install a maintenance kit" (which is a fuser and rollers), and it is...350,000 pages. BUT, when I look at the specs for an HP 8100 fuser, it says the fuser has a life span of 150,000 pages. What gives? – Will the fuser go bad after 150 or 350? ==== BTW I hope it's ok to ask another similar question in a new thread -- I'm just following instructions from my thread on the topic at Meta.

• Xenserver boot error

  I'm trying to get Xenserver 5.5 running on a spare computer here, hardware specs: Intel Q6600, 4GB Ram, and Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R motherboard Xenserver itself installs fine onto a 150GB sata hdd, however it fails to boot whatsoever, giving this garbled mess: http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/9918/biosi.jpg it's not frozen because if I press enter it just prints a different garble and it also says "could not find kernel image". The strangest thing is if I put that hdd in my desktop and assign it to a VMWare desktop vm (under the ESX profile no less) it boots perfectly... leading me to believe there are no problems with the install or the hdd itself. From what I can tell the error seems to be occuring completely seperately to Xenserver, in the bootloader extlinux?. If there was a motherboard compatibility issue I would think it would also have manifested during installation, and the fact the problem seems to be with the booting into Xen makes me doubt this. Any ideas guys? (I'm using Xen because it can do PCI passthrough without VT-d.)

• Weird problem, special characters after formatting the hard drive, computer not starting 0_o

  Hya friends , Last night my computer was working fine. But today when i came back from college and started it , it was starting fine but after sometime it's getting restarted , again and again getting restarted at different points , so i tried to boot it in safe mode but same problem. Now after all this , i finally decided to format the drive C (it is in 80 GB) and load new OS windows XP3. After formatting and loading xp3 sufficient files , when it was getting rebooted for copying the actual os files , it hung and a weird screen came.   My computer specs: Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-945PL-S3 OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate CPU Socket: LGA775 CPU: Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E4300 (2M Cache, 1.80 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) After I bought new hard drive (Western Digital 250GB, 7200rpm, 32MB, Sata III, Caviar Blue, WD2500AAKX) I saw that my processor temperature started to raise to higher value then before. Now while surfing internet it goes to 70°C. Cleaned my motherboard - nothing; cleaned fan - nothing; replaced thermal paste - nothing; replaced thermal paste with care - still nothing. So I went to friend just to check if he doesn't have any spear fan, and he did. But with fan he had another processor that he didn't need and he wanted to give it to me, but I told him that I will think about this. So my CPU, he's CPU (Intel® Pentium® D Processor 820 (2M Cache, 2.80 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)). Question: which proccesor is better for gaming and for recording games?

• Windows Server 2003 not automatically assigning drive letter to external drives

  My newly rebuilt Windows Server 2003 doesn't automatically assign drive letters to external usb devices. I have to manually open the Disk Management Console and assign it a drive letter every time. It does this with two different drives in all USB ports. I have been doing some reading and I don't have any network drives, I have also already tried USBDLM and it doesn't seem to have made any difference. Specs: ProLiant ML150 G5 with Windows 2003 Enterprise and all updates installed. Any ideas on what I can try to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated. Chris

• Linux only recognizes 800Mhz from 2Ghz

  I tried with Suse 11 (KDE), Xubuntu 11.10 and Lubuntu 11.10 and these systems only recognizes 800Mhz from my processor of 2Ghz! The utilities I used are: linuxinfo, sysinfo, "system profiler and benchmark". And all of this only shows 800Mhz My system specs are: AMD Turion 64 Mobile MK36 512 RAM nVidia Geforce Go 6150 (I also tried with nVidia restricted drivers) 120GB Hard drive The weirdest thing is that Windows XP and 7 recognize the 2Ghz of my processor, What can I do? p.s. (It is not just the value of 800Mhz, I also feel my system very slow with linux)
