• Adding features to an SQL Server 2008 standard with SP1

  I have MS SQL Server 2008 with SP1 installed. I want to add the Full text feature to the installation. Do I need to run the SP1 update again after I add this feature? If I do try to run it (SQLServer2008SP1-KB968369-x64-ENU) it fails with this error: "There are no SQL Server instances or shared features that can be updated on this computer". Should I uninstall SP1 and re-install? Doesnt make much sense.

• OS X Lion - Installing Oracle 10g Standard Edition

  Im trying to install oracle 10g on to OS X Lion, I have previous achieved this on snow leopard with the following http://blog.rayapps.com/2009/09/14/how-to-install-oracle-database-10g-on-mac-os-x-snow-leopard/ The issue im having is that the ulimit settings in the oracle/.bash_profile cannot be modified. I have the following in the bash_profile: export DISPLAY=:0.0 export ORACLE_BASE=$HOME umask 022 # must match `sysctl kern.maxprocperuid` ulimit -Hu 512 ulimit -Su 512 # must match `sysctl kern.maxfilesperproc` ulimit -Hn 10240 ulimit -Sn 10240 Upon applying the bash_profile settings . ~/.bash_profile i get the following error: -bash: ulimit: max user processes: cannot be modify limit: Invalid argument This then results in $ sqlplus / as sysdba not functioning correctly with a Segmentation fault: 11 The output of $ ulimit -a core file size (blocks, -c) 0 data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited file size (blocks, -f) unlimited max locked memory (kbytes, -l) unlimited max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited open files (-n) 10240 pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 1 stack size (kbytes, -s) 8192 cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited max user processes (-u) 512 virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited If any one knows how I can apply these ulimit settings to the oracle user I have created to allow me to install sqlplus and therefore create a db, that would be great.

• new SBS 2011 Standard problems

  Brand new SBS 2011 install. I went to remove the DHCP server role. It went into a "Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer." Been there for hours. Finally, decided to power off and restart. After boot up, the same window and message appear and it just sits there spinning. "Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer." I'd love to get this installed before the end of the day but it doesn't look like that's possible. Any ideas on how to get passed this?

• LCD monitor reports incorrect maximum resolution

  I have four 20" Planar 2010M LCD monitors with a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 connected to two nVidia video cards (8600 GT and 7600 GS). I'm running Windows Server 2003 x86. Recently, two of the monitors have started mis-reporting their maximum resolution as 1280 x 1024. When this first happened, I used nVidia's Custom Resolutions feature to force the monitors back to 1600 x 1200. Yesterday, however, I upgraded nVidia's video card driver, and ever since, I cannot get the DVI one back to 1600 x 1200. When I add the custom resolution in nVidia's control panel, if I set either the width or the height to even a single pixel more than 1280 x 1024, nothing changes when I click Test (the monitor doesn't even flash black, although after 15 seconds, it flashes black and doesn't change). After adding Does anyone know what the problem is? Is there anything I can do about it?

• SSH through standard Belkin router to Asus Tomato router

  I've set up SSH on the Tomato firmware on an Asus N10, via port 22 with key authentication. I've tested the keys by connecting with putty directly to the router when connected to its network. That works OK. But this router is behind a Belkin (F5D7632-4) router which also acts as modem and when I try to connect through with the (dynamic) public IP it times out. I'm guessing it's something to do with the NAT? My putty settings are taken from various online tutorials, but it's set up for port 22, with the correct key as mentioned. The Belkin router has port forwarding to the Asus (192.168.2.3) for port 22 TCP and UDP set up. It's now tough to see what to do in order to connect to the Asus router with an external IP - if it's even possible. Ideally I would have liked to have only needed to use the Asus router, but as it doesn't act as a modem, I need to connect it to the Belkin to use Tomato's features. • nagios wrongly reports packet loss

  Lately, on my nagios 3.2.3 install (CentOS5, monitoring ~ 300 hosts, 1150 services) has sdtarted to occasionally report high packet loss on 50-60 hosts at a time. Problem is it's bogus. Manual runs of ping (or its own check_ping binary) finds no fault with any of the affected hosts. The only possible cures I found so far are: run all the checks manually (they will succeed but it may act up again on next check) acknowledge and wait for the problem to go away (may take several ours) I suspect (but have no particular reason other than single rescheduled checks succeeding) that the problem may lay with all the checks being mass scheduled together - in which case introducing some jitter in the scheduling (how?) might help. Or it may be something completely different. Ideas, anyone?

  My company is currently trying to migrate a Windows Small Business Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012. We know the general procedure, but we want to make sure we aren't going to mess anything up tremendously. Here's the steps we were planning on taking: 1. Uninstall exchange 2. Remove legacy GPO's 3. Demote the domain controller 4. Promote the new server to the primary domain controller. We have no mail servers to worry about. My question is, will the above method work or will we need to make a complete new domain? Thanks!

• Excel - graphing mean and standard deviation

  Hi all, I have measurements for multiple devices, and have their mean and sd values. I would like to produce a chart that would show these values, and I think the best would be if I could have something that looks like a bar chart(-ish) - the device names in x axis, values in y axis, and for each device to have a 'floating' bar that would represent values (mean - sd :: mean + sd), and some marker in the middle to show the actual mean value. is it doable? or would you suggest some other chart?   I do some technical work for an Internet Radio Show/Podcast, and need to fix something that has been broken for a while. The hosts have a Skype-In number to take listener calls, and for convenience sake, I bought and paid for a toll free number for a period of time. I used to use Asterlink for routing calls, but they folded and sent my number to OneBox, but they're ridiculously expensive by comparison. I'm looking for a cheap solution for this one simple task. Forward toll free calls to a skype-in number. The definition of cheap is as cheap or cheaper than Asterlink was. I paid something like $2 a month, and then the termination/call rate, which was a fraction of a sent for termination, and only whole cents after some serious time on the call. A $20 preload lasted me months at a time. I don't want to be upsold too, I want a simple web based management screen (CDR/stats are fun!), and obviously, it needs to be reliable. What vendors out there are you a fan of that solves this need?

  For 3 days now I've been unable to boot into my Windows 7 partition, and all my research has been to no avail. I'm hoping someone here has more ideas on how to fix this. When I boot up now, I get the black screen with BCD error that says theres no valid file system or it may be corrupt (pardon my lack of detail, no copy/paste is available then). When I boot with the Windows 7 disc and go into repair tools, no operating system is found, and attempting to automatically repair the problem fails with Unknown Operating System (Unknown Disk) or something similar. When I drop into the command prompt, I am able to see and navigate my C:\ drive without issue. I attempt to use bootrec: C:\> bootrec /ScanOS Finds C:\Windows as a system partition. C:\> bootrec /RebuildBCD Fails with volume does not contain a recognized file system. please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted. So then I attempt to fix the bootsector: C:\> bootsect /nt60 C: /force Which completes successfully (sorry, no output..) Upon rebooting, I have the same problem. I've also tried all of the above after making my Windows partition active: C:\> diskpart DISKPART> select disk 1 DISKPART> select partition 1 DISKPART> active DISKPART> exit Then bootrec as above, both with and without a reboot after the DISKPART commands. Then I've also tried rebuilding the BCD store by hand: set systemdrive=C: set tempbcd=C:\boot\bcd.temp set tempfile=C:\boot\temp.txt bcdedit -createstore %tempbcd% bcdedit.exe -store %tempbcd% -create {bootmgr} -d "Windows Boot Manager" bcdedit -store %tempbcd% -create -d "Windows Vista" -application osloader>%tempfile% set /p winvistaguid= <%tempfile% set winvistaguid=%winvistaguid:~10,38% bcdedit -store %tempbcd% -set %winvistaguid% osdevice partition=%systemdrive% bcdedit -store %tempbcd% -set %winvistaguid% device partition=%systemdrive% bcdedit -store %tempbcd% -set %winvistaguid% path \Windows\system32\winload.exe bcdedit -store %tempbcd% -set %winvistaguid% systemroot \Windows bcdedit -import %tempbcd% However on the import, I get my familiar friendly message: volume does not contain a recognized file system. please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted I'm at my wits end here, and I cannot understand why Windows refuses to see this as a valid install. • Windows 7 wifi reports "no network access" and "no internet access" but connects in fedora

  I am running windows 7 home basic (64bit) on a Acer 5742G laptop with Atheos wifi adapter in it. Yesterday, I hiberneted my computer as I always do and up untill then the wifi was working fine. When I booted my computer up again today I started having a strange problem: It detects my wifi but after connecting to it, it keeps on oscillating between states of no network access and no internet access. I can't connect to anything (the internet or my router). I tried to reset my internet protocol stack using this fixit file. I also tried to uninstall and reinstall my network driver. Neither helped. I am using the same laptop's fedora installation right now and the wifi is working perfectly fine. Please help. Edit To add additional details, I have Microsoft Security essentials as my antivirus software and I haven't messed with the firewall or the router configurations.

• Windows Server 2003 Standard R2 CD 1 cannot boot: freeze at No Emulation

  Hi everyone. I've been interested in the Windows Server line of OSes, so since I apply for DreamSpark, I thought I'd go download it and try it. I just so happened to have an old desktop that I was using awhile ago for Windows XP, so I imaged the drive in preparation for it to be overwritten with the new OS. (This system has an Asus A7V8X-X motherboard, an AMD Athlon XP 2800+ processor, and 1GB of RAM.) I tried burning the first disk image on my newer desktop computer, running Windows XP, although the CD burner consistently failed at a particular track area from cd to cd, so it seemed like the burner was toast there. Fortunately, I had a laptop, so I transferred the images over to that, then burned the first disc there. First time around went great, and the burning program reported no errors. I then took the CD over to the computer that I was intending to install Server onto, set the BIOS to boot from the CD drive, then I booted it up. Like normal, after the POST, it printed "Boot from ATAPI CD-Rom: No Emulation", which I was used to seeing with bootable cds. I waited for the "Press any key to continue..." message that I had become so familiar with in windows discs, although I saw none. The computer sat there for about 5 seconds with the cd spinning, then it spun down like it was done reading it. Nothing else happened. No response from the keyboard. I tried again, same result. I then downloaded IMGBurn, and I put the burned cd into the laptop that burned it originally. I also downloaded a fresh image from the dreamspark site. I ran a verify session, and everything checked out. I later tried getting various DOS startup discs, then I tried booting the winnt binary, which supposedly initiates the installation process. Either the shells reported that not enough memory was available (since they would be running in low memory mode), or FreeDOS in particular would report Illegal instructions right away. Is the image corrupt at dreamspark, or am I doing something wrong?

  How can I allow access to the foo.html files in the .com/song/private/ subfolder for: a logged-in Wordpress user; or any referral domains (including subfolders) I add; or any URL on our own domain from the com/song/private folder; For all others, the user should be redirected to the corresponding public version of the Post, which is the same html filename and structured .com/song/foo.html. (The private versions uses a different template with different custom fields for each Post.) • nmap reports host up when it isn't

  On an Ubuntu VM I ran: sudo nmap -sP 192.168.0.* This returned: Starting Nmap 5.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2010-12-28 22:46 PST Host 192.168.0.0 is up (0.00064s latency). Host 192.168.0.1 is up (0.00078s latency). Host 192.168.0.2 is up (0.00011s latency). . . . Host 192.168.0.254 is up (0.00068s latency). Host 192.168.0.255 is up (0.00066s latency). The problem is I only have 4 live machines on 192.168.0.* so why did nmap report every ip in the subnet has a live host? The ip address of the Ubuntu machine is 192.168.28.131 From this VM I can ping the live systems on my internal subnet 192.168.0.* and get the expected response. And if I ping a machine that doesn't exist I can get no response as expected.

• Trouble installing Windows Embedded Standard 2009

  Getting the following error when attempting to install: Error attempting to create the destination file: C:\Windows Embedded Data\Repositories\{25C88912-9870-4686-97CE-8244C A1B0DAB}.CAB. System error code: 5 Code 5 looks to be an "Access denied" issue. Not sure if this is a generic Windows error, or specific to this install. Any insight is appreciated! -Tim
