  • Can aynone tell me what exactly 32bit/64bit and x86 and AMD64 have to do with the different choices on the download site of Ubuntu?

    - by Elysium
SORRY for the newbie question, but I am still learning. I am wondering if x86 simply refers to the intel CPUs and AMD64 simply refers to the AMD CPUs? While....32bit and 64bit to the processor types? I was trying to download the intel 64bit version of the Ubuntu installer, but it wont give the option of x86 and AMD64....only the 32bit and 64bit can be chosen. Does this mean that someone with an Intel CPU and another person with an AMD CPU will download the same install file? (obviously depending on the bit version of their CPUs this might differ....but that's another thing).

  • I've changed my URL schema. How do I tell Google to index the new schema and forget the old one?

    - by growse
I had a site where the urls were constructed like this /index.php/Topic /index.php/AnotherTopic These were indexed in google, and search results returned that pointed to these. However, I've recently replatformed that site, and reconfigured it so the above urls would be: /index.php?title=Topic /index.php?title=AnotherTopic The original urls are returning 404s. The site is linking to the correct URL schema internally, but Google is retaining the original schema in its search results. I've updated and resubmitted the sitemap which only contains the new schema. Also, Google's webmasters tool is going slightly bananas at the fact there's now a spike in 404 errors in its crawl results. What would be the best approach to get Google to 'forget' about the old schema, and instead index the new schema? Should I try blocking /index.php/ in robots.txt? Should I be returning 301 codes instead of 404 for the original urls?

  • Turned off my computer and o it's opened up in grub. How do I tell it to boot into lubuntu?

    - by Magpie
It's just a commandline. I have tried my usual trick of sticking a usb with lubuntu in there to see if I can boot from my usb but I get a boot error (I normally wouldn't using that usb). GNU grub version 2.00-7ubuntu11 also just using basic things I know I hits ls then tried boot hd0 but it says: you need to load the kernel first I have no idea how to do this. I looked at the commands and most of them hve obscure names that are not helpful. UPDATE: I hit exit and that allowed be to boot from usb. Hopefully I will be able to find what I need to install to get it booting normally again from there.

  • Applescript Adobe Updater

    - by Alex
So, I am new to Applescript editor and I am trying to write code to automatically update computers. For some odd reason I can not seem to get Adobe to update successfully. I tried using Accessibility Inspector, but nothing appeared like AXButton So is there even a way of writing code for Adobe when there is not an AXButton option? This is the code: tell application "Adobe Application Manager" activate end tell delay 7.0 tell application "System Events" tell process "Adobe Application Manager" click button "Update" of window "Adobe Application Manager" end tell end tell and this is the error message: error "System Events got an error: Can’t get button \"Update\" of window \"Adobe Application Manager\" of process \"Adobe Application Manager\"." number -1728 from button "Update" of window "Adobe Application Manager" of process "Adobe Application Manager

  • Applescript create event in calendar, how do I remove the default alert?

    - by zero0cool
Running 10.8 Mountain Lion, I'm trying to create a new event with Applescript like this: set theDate to (current date) tell application "Calendar" tell calendar "Calendar" set timeString to time string of theDate set newEvent to make new event at end with properties {description:"Last Backup", summary:"Last Backup " & timeString, location:"To a local unix system", start date:theDate, end date:theDate + 15 * minutes, allday event:false, status:confirmed} tell newEvent delete every display alarm delete every sound alarm delete every mail alarm delete every open file alarm end tell end tell end tell However, this does not remove the default Calendar alert which one can set through Calendar preferences (30 minutes prior in my case). How do I create an event with no alarms at all through Applescript?

  • ocunit testing on iPhone

    - by Magnus Poromaa
Hi I am trying to get ocunit working in my project from XCode. Since I also need to debug in the unit tests I am using a script that automates the setup (see below). I just include it in the project under resources and change the name to the .ocunit file I want it to run. The problem I get is that it cant find the bundle file and therefore exists with an error. Can anyone who has a clue about XCode and objective-c take a look at it and tell me what is wrong. Also how am I supposed to produce the .ocunit file that I need to run. By setting up a new unit test target for the iPhone and add tests to it or? Hope someone has a clue since I just started ny iPhone development and need to get it up and running quickly Apple Script -- The only customized value we need is the name of the test bundle tell me to activate tell application "Xcode" activate set thisProject to project of active project document tell thisProject set testBundleName to name of active target set unitTestExecutable to make new executable at end of executables set name of unitTestExecutable to testBundleName set path of unitTestExecutable to "/Applications/TextEdit.app" tell unitTestExecutable -- Add a "-SenTest All" argument make new launch argument with properties {active:true, name:"-SenTest All"} -- Add the magic set injectValue to "$(BUILT_PRODUCTS_DIR)/" & testBundleName & ".octest" make new environment variable with properties {active:true, name:"XCInjectBundle", value:injectValue} make new environment variable with properties {active:true, name:"XCInjectBundleInto", value:"/Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit"} make new environment variable with properties {active:true, name:"DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES", value:"$(DEVELOPER_LIBRARY_DIR)/PrivateFrameworks/DevToolsBundleInjection.framework/DevToolsBundleInjection"} make new environment variable with properties {active:true, name:"DYLD_FALLBACK_FRAMEWORK_PATH", value:"$(DEVELOPER_LIBRARY_DIR)/Frameworks"} end tell end tell end tell Cheers Magnus

  • Turing-Complete language possibilities?

    - by I can't tell you my name.
In every Turing-Complete language, is it possible to create a working Compiler for itself which first runs on an interpreter written in some other language and then compiles it's own source code? (Bootstrapping) Standards-Compilant C++ compiler which outputs binaries for, e.g.: Windows? Regex Parser and Evaluater? World of Warcraft clone? (Assuming the language gets the necessary API bindings as, for example, OpenGL and the WoW source code is available) (Everything here theoretical) Let's take Brainf*ck as an example language.

  • Can you help me think of problems for my programming language?

    - by I can't tell you my name.
I've created an experimental toy programming language with a (now) working interpreter. It is turing-complete and has a pretty low-level instruction set. Even if everything takes four to six times more code and time than in PHP, Python or Ruby I still love programming all kinds of things in it. So I got the "basic" things that are written in many languages working: Hello World Input - Output Countdowns (not as easy as you think as there are no loops) Factorials Array emulation 99 Bottles of Beer (simple, wrong inflection) 99 Bottles of Beer (canonical) Conjatz conjecture Quine (that was a fun one!) Brainf*ck interpreter (To proof turing-completeness, made me happy) So I implemented all of the above examples because: They all used many different aspects of the language They are pretty interesting They don't take hours to write Now my problem is: I've run out of ideas! I don't find any more examples of what problems I could solve using my language. Do you have any programming problems which fit into some of the criteria above for me to work out?

  • I'm trying to install Spree on my Mac with Rails 1.9.2 - I'm getting an error message.

    - by william tell
I'm doing a local install on Mac OSX of Spree (a Ruby-based ecommerce package) following the tutorial on this page. I'm using RVM to run Ruby 1.9.2 and rails 3.0.3. I run "gem install spree" successfully to load spree version 0.40. But when I run "Gem Install Spree" I get the following message. Can anyone help? /Library/Ruby/Site/1.8/rubygems.rb:335:in `bin_path': can't find executable spree for spree-0.40.0 (Gem::Exception) from /usr/bin/spree:19 Also, when I run "Gem list spree" I get an empty list.

  • What information about me and my system do compilers add to executeables?

    - by I can't tell you my name.
I'm currently using Microsoft Visual Studio 2010. If we say that we give 10 different people a copy of MSVC 10 and a short C++ Hello, World listing. They all create a new project using exactly the same settings, add a new cpp file with the Hello, World program and compile it. Do they all get the exactly same binary? If not, what are the exact differences? What information about my system does MSVC add to my executeable? Paranoia!

  • What is this Design Pattern?

    - by Can't Tell
I read the Wikipedia articles on FactoryMethod and AbstractFactory but the following code doesn't seem to fit anywhere. Can someone explain to me what the following pattern is or if it is an anti-pattern? interace PaymentGateway{ void makePayment(); } class PaypalPaymentGateway implements PaymentGateway { public void makePayment() { //some implementation } } class AuthorizeNetPaymentGateway implements PaymentGateway { public void makePayment() { //some implementation } } class PaymentGatewayFacotry{ PaymentGateway createPaymentGateway(int gatewayId) { if(gatewayId == 1) return PaypalPaymentGateway(); else if(gatewayId == 2) return AuthorizeNetPaymentGateway(); } } Let's say the user selects the payment method using a radio button on an html page and the gatewayId is derived from the radio button value. I have seen code like this and thought it was the AbstractFactory pattern but after reading the Wikipedia article, I'm having doubts.

  • What should I know about Python to identify comments in different source files?

    - by Can't Tell
I have a need to identify comments in different kinds of source files in a given directory. ( For example java,XML, JavaScript, bash). I have decided to do this using Python (as an attempt to learn Python). The questions I have are 1) What should I know about python to get this done? ( I have an idea that Regular Expressions will be useful but are there alternatives/other modules that will be useful? Libraries that I can use to get this done?) 2) Is Python a good choice for such a task? Will some other language make this easier to accomplish?

  • Methods to see result fo a code change faster

    - by Can't Tell
This question came to me when developing using Eclipse. I use JBoss Application Server and use hot code replacement. But this option requires that the 'build automatically' option to be enabled. This makes Eclipse build the workspace automatically (periodically or when a file is saved?) and for a large code base this takes too much time and processing which makes the machine freeze for a while. Also sometimes an error message is shown saying that hot code replacement failed. The question that I have is: is there a better way to see the result of a code change? Currently I have the following two suggestions: Have unit tests - this will allow to run a single test and see the result of a code change. ( But for a JavaEE application that uses EJBs is it easy to setup unit tests?) Use OSGi - which allows to add jars to the running system without bringing down the JVM. Any ideas on above suggestions or any other suggestion or a framework that allows to do this is welcome.

  • What do the numbers 240 and 360 mean when downloading video? How can I tell which video is more compressed?

    - by DaMing
I have downloaded some computer science lectures from YouTube recently. There is usually more than one choice of file size and file format to download. I noticed that for the same video, the downloadable one with FLV 240 extension is larger than another one with MPEG4 360 extension. What does the number (240 and 360) mean? And which file's compression rate is bigger? That is to say, which one removed much more file elements than the other from the orignal file?

  • How to tell Windows 7 "sleep when laptop is closed, unless there's an external monitor connected; then use that"?

    - by Josh
Most of the time, I would like my Windows 7 laptop to sleep when I close it. But sometimes, I like to connect an external monitor over DVI. I would like my laptop to use the external monitor when I close the lid, but only when a monitor is connected to the DVI port. Otherwise, sleep when closed. Is there any way I can do that, without manually changing the power settings every time I decide to use the monitor?

  • Repeat over files in a File > Open dialog with Applescript

    - by GotNoSugarBaby
In the below script I use an Application other than Finder to launch an "Open" browser and perform a search in it. I've got the window into the state I want, but whatever I try can't access the list of files to repeat over. If anyone can help by adding the code to repeat over that file list and log out the file path of each file it'd be a huge help. Thanks a lot. tell application "Preview" -- start the app activate -- let it boot up delay 3 -- ensure it still has focus activate end tell tell application "System Events" tell process "Preview" -- spawn "Open" window keystroke "o" using {command down} delay 0.5 -- spawn "Go to" window keystroke "g" using {command down, shift down} delay 0.5 -- expand scope of search to all of this mac keystroke "/" keystroke return delay 0.5 -- spawn search field keystroke "f" using {command down} delay 0.5 -- perform search keystroke ".jpg OR .jpeg" keystroke return end tell end tell

  • Perl script segfaulting after 64-bit upgrade

    - by Brent
I recently upgraded a 32-bit Debian server to 64-bit by re-installing, and copying my data into place. After this I have a perl script that repeats the following, and is segfaulting on the tell line: seek(FIN,$ps,0); tell(FIN, $ps); $line=<FIN>; I don't speak perl, so I'm not sure exactly what is going on here. I can get the script to run (apparently successfully) by commenting every occurrence of tell, but this is obviously not the best solution. I suspect that tell is calling a 32-bit binary or something, and that is the cause of the segfault - but I don't know. Can someone explain what tell does, and if it is indeed a separate binary, what package it belongs to (or how it is installed ie. cpan)? Or perhaps I am on the wrong track?

  • Event-Driven Debugging

    - by Brian Donahue
Most application troubleshooting involves getting an error, analyzing the error message, and at worst, attaching a debugger to work out the real cause. What is not really covered is how to troubleshoot an applicaiton that is not errant, but is having a performance issue, and more than likely, in the middle of the night when you are snug in your bed, sawing logs. What you need is an ever-vigilant cyborg who never sleeps to sit in front of your server all night, but as SkyNet is not live yet, you can settle for the next-best thing. Windows provides performance counters and alerts that can tell you when an applicaiton reaches an unacceptable threshold of naughty behavior, but although it can tattle on your brainchild, it won't be the child psychiatrist that you need to tell you why he's pulling your server's pigtails and pulling faces at the teacher. What you need is to plug a debugger into performance monitor and have it tell you what's going on with your applicaiton at the time. For this purpose, I'd used Microsoft's MDbgEngine as the basis for an applicaiton that will dump a program's stacks, I call it Application Slicer Dicer Wonder Dumper Super Cyborg, or StackOMatic for short. StackOMatic can look at a program's behavior and tell you if the stacks are not moving, but it can also work on the command-line to dump all managed methods on the stack at will. Now that there is a command you can use to dump the stacks, all you need to do is politely tell Windows to run it when you're displeased with your creation as it's trashing the CPU of your server at 3 AM. The first step is to create a scheduled task to tell StackOMatic to dump your applicaiton. Start Task Scheduler and right-click Task Scheduler Library and then Create Task. For this exercise I'm creating a task that will dump the Red Gate SQL Monitor Base Monitor Service. In the Actions tab, I enter the path to StackOMatic and use the arguments to log the stack dump to a file: /PN:RedGate.Response.Engine.Alerting.Base.Service /OUT:c:\users\administrator\MonitorLog.txt Next, I go into Windows Server 2008's Reliability and Performance Monitor and add a new Data Collector Set. This set will produce an alert on the %Processor Time for the service. When the processor time breaches 50%, it will run the StackDumpBaseService task I created. Whenever the service misbehaves, it will append to the log file. Now when I go to work in the morning, I can see what the service was doing when it overloaded the processor and take action.
