• Mythbusters- Programming/hacking myths [closed]

  Hey guys. I am a big fan of the Discovery show Mythbusters, as Im sure some of you are as well. I have always wanted them to do an episode on programming/hacking. They get a lot of their show ideas from fans so I though we could compile a list of possible myths to bust. Lets hear your ideas! (sorry if this is not appropriate, close if necessary) Edit: I am not necessarily looking for subjective "This is what I want to see" answers. I am talking more along the lines of interesting computer/programming/hacking stories that would appeal to a general audience. I do not expect them to do a show on "Whats faster i++ or i + 1".

• Is obtrusive JavaScript ever ok?

  I was thinking that if all the users of a website are required to have JavaScript enabled, Is it ok to use obtrusive JavaScript? I'm all for progressive enhancement, but whats the point when an advanced web applications bounces users at the door if they have an old browser or JavaScript disabled? We have a very slim target audience, and we can tell our target audience what browser and plugins/functionality they are required to have. So you my question is, is mixing JS and HTML alright in that case. Like using onclick attributes.

• sound stopped working after upgrade to 11.10 on Tuesday 20th March

  My sound card stopped working after a set of updates were installed 2 days ago. The sound card is detected, the volume is not muted and the speakers work, I can make the speakers hum if I touch the jack plug lead that normally plugs into the card. hugh@lindisfarne:~$ lspci -v | grep -A7 -i "audio" 07:01.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs CA0106 Soundblaster Subsystem: Creative Labs SB0570 [SB Audigy SE] Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 16 I/O ports at c000 [size=32] Capabilities: Kernel driver in use: CA0106 Kernel modules: snd-ca0106 I've tried reverting those upgraded packages that look like the could impact the kernal - but to no avail. alsamixer does not have anything muted, I've been though all the sound card debug/troubleshooting pages I can find. Kernal driver is attached. So whats gone pop ? I will boot from CD to check - but I am pretty sure this is a sw and not a hw problem.

• Programming for the iPhone

  Whats the best way to get started on iPhone development if you are an expeienced C++ or C# programmer? Most books either assume you know nothing or something. What are the steps to achieve this? For eg: first learn objective C (let's say), next learn cocoa... I am interested in books/resources. I read Getting started with iPhone development from Oreilly (the missing manuals book) but that just provided an over view on the programming and concentrated more on getting your app into the app store. I need need resources that will help be start coding. Other questions: How much of objective C do you need to know? How do go ahead with learning the cocoa framework? Can I directly start on cocoa touch or do I need to know the MAC cocoa framework first? Inputs from someone who was in the same situation (Know c++/c# but no clue about mac programming/objective c/cocoa) would help greatly.

• Kicked out when logged in?

  When i log into ubuntu the screen goes black as it were logging in but then i am back in the login screen. I can login as guest (i should disable that). I can login via ssh. The last time i had no issues was when i used it this morning and the only unusual thing i did was shutdown via ssh (i think i wrote shutdown now) which had ubuntu hang after showing the shuting down screen for many seconds (i kind of assumed it shut down properly since the UI froze as well and it usually takes less time). Whats the easiest way to fix this w/o reinstalling? Its a brand new install and so it probably takes me 10mins to recopy/setup everything so i may just do that -edit- using 12.04

• How do I become a programmer and not some guy that can type some C?

  From what I understand, programming has a lot more to it than learning syntax, that it involves an understanding of what happens under-the-hood and even more. Currently, I am just a guy that can pump out a few loops in Python or C and maybe make a small-scope Zork clone as the hight of skill. So, what can I do to become an actual programmer? How can I find out what I need to know and learn it? I know this has been vaguely asked before, but I kind of want an answer of how as opposed to the whats that I have seen. Would it be nice to know how real programmers define being a programmer? yes. Is that going to actually help me (or anyone else) learn what they need to learn? no. (well, maybe.)

• Memory Management/Embedded Management in C

  Im wondering if there is a set or a few good books/Tutorials/Etc.. that go into Memory Management/Allocation Specifically (or at least have a good dedicated section to it) when it comes to C. This is more for me learning Embedded and trying to keep Size down. I've read and Learned C fine, and the "standard" Learning books. However most of the books don't spend a huge amount of time (Understandably since C is pretty huge in general) going into the Finer details about whats going on Down Under.   I have an eth0 and eth1, eth0 has dynamic ip and on eth1 i setup static ip: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 10.10.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 gateway 10.10.0.1 ` and then i setup the "isc-dhcp-server" with the fowling command: INTERFACES="eth1" Finally... I went to this one "dhcpd.conf", with the fowling comand: default-lease-time 650; max-lease-time 79520; option subnet-mask 255.0.0.0; option broadcast-address 10.10.0.255; option routers 10.10.0.2; subnet 10.10.0.0 netmask 255.0.0.0 { range 10.10.0.10 10.10.0.250; } When I try to "sudo /etc/init.d/isc-dhcp-server start", I get "start: Job failed to start" Anyone knows whats wrong? :/

  My Step Father is starting his own company, and he gets the wonderful life of having to deal with multiple clients. He needs a calendar system that can do the following: Can be updated from iCal (I'm pretty sure this just means CalDAV support) Needs to be able to show different clients the details of whats on his calendar for them, while showing other client's arranged times as only busy Wants to show it in a professional way, preferably on his own website. I was looking at Google Calendar, but alas it doesn't seem to actually support it like I thought it would. He was looking at MobileMe, but its simply public. Is there a calendar app or PHP application that can be installed on his server that can do this?

• Wifi problem in ubuntu using macbook pro when it restart

• Should you document everything or just most?

  It seems a bit of a controversial subject to document everything, including the "JavaBean" syntax of getters and setters for fields: People say its needlessly long and repetitive breaking DRY (don't repeat yourself), that the naming convention should explain everything, and it clutters code/documentation. Sometimes those arguments work. But other times, you end up with this: Above is common to open source projects that do boldly follow those principles. Your left with entirely useless documentation. That doesn't explain anything about whats going on underneath, the possible effects, or even what the expected value is (could it be null or never null? I don't know, the Javadoc doesn't tell me). So when should I document? Do I document everything even if it occasionally clutters code? Or do I document nothing since in my eyes its "obvious"?

• Best practice Java - String array constant and indexing it

  For string constants its usual to use a class with final String values. But whats the best practice for storing string array. I want to store different categories in a constant array and everytime a category has been selected, I want to know which category it belongs to and process based on that. Addition : To make it more clear, I have a categories A,B,C,D,E which is a constant array. Whenever a user clicks one of the items(button will have those texts) I should know which item was clicked and do processing on that. I can define an enum(say cat) and everytime do if clickedItem == cat.A .... else if clickedItem = cat.B .... else if .... or even register listeners for each item seperately. But I wanted to know the best practice for doing handling these kind of problems.

• Cursor freezes for 5 secs every now and then

  I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 (64bit) on my new Thinkpad Edge 11 laptop from Lenovo with the following specs: Processor type AMD Athlon II Neo Processor Speed 1.8 GHz Memory Type DDR3 SDRAM RAM 2048 MB Hard Drive Type HDD Harddisk 250 GB Grafic processor ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6310 Ubuntu has found all my hardware and it works perfectly. I have one irritating problem though: From time to time (sometimes every minute, other times every hour)the cursor freezes for about 5 sec. This happens independently from the number of processes running on the laptop. It's only the cursor that freezes - I can still tab between windows and use the keyboard. I've installed GPointingDeviceSettings, activating the trackpoint, which btw works perfectly. Also I have installed the ATI Catalyst proprietary display driver. Anyone has an idea of whats wrong?   Is there any way to get ubuntu to recognise an ATI 6950? I have tried installing the proprietary ATI drivers, but these do not seem to work properly. It seems to screw up the gnome desktop, and starts booting into terminal. I'm somewhat of a linux newbie, so not really sure whats going wrong. I don't want to game on ubuntu, I just want it to recognise my dual monitor setup rather than mirroring the monitors, so any driver that does this is fine by me. It seems like the open source ATI radeon drivers will not support the 6950/6970 for some time, at least until kernel 2.6.38 is released. The card is also flashed with the 6970 firmware, not sure if this is important. I am running a 64 bit version of ubuntu, I installed ubuntu server 10.10, then installed gnome-desktop.

• Ubuntu 12.10 Unity Dash transparency problem

  I have just upgraded my Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 and there is following problem. When I press super button to show Unity Dash I get wrong background image behind the dash box. Especially I can see part of the bottom of the screen. Also when I set transparency to top panel the background behind is not correct. Tryd my ip xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx / localhost with / without :5900 added with / without in "Remote desktop" checked "Configure network automatically to accept connection" with / without in router WRT54G enabled port 5900 forwardet to my comp 192.168.1.3 UPNP is enabled. I can connect to one other comp witch isnt using router and checked "Configure network automatically to accept connection" and to one thrue TENDA W311R+ router where ive put port forwarding to 5900 and there works xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:5900 Whats wrong? What ive missed?

I have worked with applications where components from individual forms are docked on a single main form to provide the necessary GUI. But I don't have any idea whats happening in the background. According to Wikipedia A dock is a graphical user interface element that typically provides the user with a way of launching, switching between, and monitoring running programs or applications. Now I am a bit confused if it is some component or an event or a property or something else. EDIT : The applications was developed in Delphi on windows platform. • Home folder icons dont change

  I just installed my-humanity icon theme on my Ubuntu 12.10 but i have an issue : I extracted the archive to /usr/share/icons or/and to ~/.icons but when i apply the icon theme from gnome twek tool home folders icons dont update but stay to Ubuntu mono dark default icons. Only Launcher/tray icons change I attach screenshots in order to understand whats my issue : My folder icons on home : How they should be : Any ideas on how can i fix it ? Note : On nautilus as root (gksudo nautilus) they appear how they should be .. Only on user do not appear !

  I've made a game in unity3d for iOS and android. We have our own server to manage high scores and stuff like that. We'd also like to have the possibility post high scores to facebook, and also do things like this.. If you and your friend are have both posted a score for our game to facebook and you post a better score then you can send them a notification. I'm reading around about this now, but I'm wondering whats the normal way people do this? Possible ways.. Use the unity facebook SDK Looks like it would work but there are different versions for iOS and android. Call the facebook graph API directly from our server. This would unify the iOS and android versions and also it makes sense as our server holds / deals with all the highscore info. I can just imagine difficulties with logging in / authentication

• Convert each slide to PNG with LibreOffice Impress in terminal with excel graph

  I need to convert each slide in a powerpoint presentation to a PNG with the command line. I have tried to convert it to a PDF then to individual PNGs but the images haven't exported properly. These images are graphs originally from Microsoft Excel. If I export it as a PNG from within LibreOffice the graph exports properly, but not if I convert it to a PDF first using unoconv or the export tool in LibreOffice Impress. Here is a couple of examples, in impress: As you can see the image works. But when this is exported to PDF it looks like: So whats going wrong? As if its directly exported to PNG in libreoffice it looks exactly as is in the presentation. Also if I convert it to the LibreOffice file format this also happens.
