• VMWare - Windows XP guest licensing

  Hi, If I have a VMWare ESXi server with 4 Windows XP guests running on it, I understand that I need a separate license for each guest. Is there a way to simplify license compliance on these VMs? For example, I want to create a master VM image and boot it 4 times. By default those 4 VMs will have the same Windows activation key installed. Is there a simple solution for this? Or is it ok to do what I've described above provided I have 4 unique license keys on hand in case of audit? thanks!

• Newbie: VirtualBox "no bootable medium found"

  My first foray into VM land so please excuse the stupidity expressed below. Running VirtualBox on Kubuntu 9.10 and trying to set up a VM running Windows 7. Windows 7 came installed and is functional as a dual-boot but I want to stay in kubuntu hence the VM. Received "Fatal: no bootable medium found" when trying to start a VM. Not surprising since VBox never gave me an option (that I recognized anyway) to tell it to look on the hard drive. I did not receive a CD of Windows 7 with the machine. How can I tell VirtualBox to grab what it needs from the hard drive? Or am I out of luck because I don't have a CD? Update: This might not be possible. The installed Windows 7 is useful only to pull the installation key. It is easier to just to download or get an ISO from a friend and enter in your own key.

• Change Linux Console's Default Monitor

  Is there any way to specify which monitor the console is displayed on in Linux? Details: I have a 3 monitor setup with 2 video cards. When I boot the computer, the BIOS displays on the PCI graphics card (which has a small monitor). When starting Linux, the console is displayed on the same monitor. Is there a way to have the console output on a different monitor? I'm using the vesafb framebuffer. I don't see a way in my BIOS to change the default video card.

  My questions are: 1) Where to buy it and what to buy? I have heard that this RAM is generic enough and it does not have to come from Apple. 2) Can I reuse my existing stick(s)? Would I have a single 2GB module, or 2 x 1GB modules? 3) If I have 2GB already, is it a good idea to have one old stick and one new one? Which one is better placed at the top and which one at the bottom? Let me know what questions you have.   We have a GA-H61M-DS2 rev 2.0 motherboard. It has an "F4" BIOS. We went to the vendors website: http://hu.gigabyte.com/products/page/mb/ga-h61m-ds2rev_20/download/bios and downloaded "F7", the latest BIOS version. We already tried: 1) "Efiflash.exe H61MDS22.F7" command from windows 7/32bit, it said nothing, the command line just flashed for a second.. 2) boot the win7 in "dos" mode (...) but the same thing happened. Q: How can we upgrade the BIOS? There aren't any ways for it?

  I'm using windows 7, Now I need to install Ubuntu 11.04 to the my lap top, I want keep win7 in my lap, I'm planing to keep dual boot system on my lap, I want to install Ubuntu on separate partition, I have deleted my windows empty partition to allocate the space to Ubuntu but when I'm proceeding with installation in Ubuntu, I couldn't recognize the empty partition, Ubuntu shows my full hard disk space one 50GB partition to install, I couldn't recognize the 50GB partition, can anyone tell me how to install Ubuntu on my lap.   I have a Windows 7 installation DVD that came with a computer with no optical drive. I have an empty USB thumb drive. I have access to two computers with optical drives, one running Linux and the other running Mac OS X. Notably, I do not have access to any Windows computer at this time. With the tools that I have, how can I create a thumb drive that I can boot with and install Windows 7? Do I have to look out for anything when making the ISO from the DVD (DRM or anything)? After the ISO is made, will UNetbootin work? How about dd?

  Ok.... So I'm part of the iOS developer program and downloaded iOS 6.0 Beta to my iPod Touch. But, I was having troubles getting XCode Beta to run so I tried to downgrade back to the current 5.1.1. Halfway through the downgrade, the process encountered an error. Now my iPod won't boot. I tried restoring it in iTunes, but I think it's trying to restore it to version 6.0, not finding it on the Apple website since it's not out yet, and failing. Any ideas on how to restore my ipod??

• Multiple users writing to one Samba mount point in OSX

  I have an OSX box containing a script which writes a unique file to a Samba share. The first part of the script mounts the share. On the machine are 2 users- UserA and UserB. Each requires to run this script at any given time however only the user who mounted the share is able to write to it. I really need both users to have rwx access. Here is what I have tried: Mounting then chmod'ing the mountpoint (no effect- overruled by Samba server?) chmod'ing the mountpoint then mounting (same as above) sudo mount_smbfs Both users have admin privileges. Ideally a solution would be executable by one of the users (contained in the script) and not rely on mounting at machine boot time. Any ideas appreciated, thanks!

  I have this: Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 1 1217 9775552 83 Linux /dev/sda2 1218 60801 478608480 83 Linux And I'd like to shrink sda2 by about 10 Gigs to give some more space to sda1. sda2 is a PV on an LVM, but there is some free space in the VG so I don't have to worry about filesystem shrinking. How can I tell my LVM to move the data off of the first 10 gigs of sda2 and then redo my partition table to give it to sda1? (I don't have enough free space to just pvremove sda2, which would be the easy solution).

  I'm trying to set up an Web Server running Ubuntu server to host some Java web applications, with MySQL running on it, an so on .. here is the tutorial I follow: perfect server ubuntu 11.10 The server configuration is: CPU S1155 INTEL Pentium G850 2.9GHz VGA 5GTs 3MB 65W MB Gigabyte GA-H77-D3H Ram 4x4Gb HDD 5x1TB Seagate (4 in RAID5 and 1 for Backup) The problem is that when I am trying to install the Server version of Ubuntu, when the installer asks me whether to activate ATA RAID Devices, and I click yes, he sees only that one, if I click no, he sees all 5 HDD's separate without any RAID, is this normal? I also tried to install the Desktop version on RAID5, but after restart, Ubuntu does't want to boot up, an underscore stands on the top of the screen. I am a newbie in servers and their configuration, in fact I am developer. I need a help from you guys.

  I Used to download Chromium Vanilla build Virtual-box image from hexxeh. recently i wanted to try Lime build which only gives a .img file. I used the mentioned Windows Image Writer (link given on the lime website.) and a 8GB Transcend Website. When i tried to boot from pen-drive, the screen only flashed and nothing happened. Now when i tried to access my pendrive, it shows only 0.99 gb capacity. What happened wrong. How can i recover my pendrive. I tried to create vdi using VBoxManage.exe convertdd chromiumos.img chromiumos.vdi command given in This link. But it is not running on VBox either.

• How to load previous kernel via ssh?

  I work remotely on my work computer. I am also the root of the workstation that I am sharing with my colleague. Yesterday, I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.31-17 when asked by the update manager but refrained from restarting because I knew my NVIDIA and several other kernel modules wouldn't work. Unfortunately my colleague who is a linux noob restarted the machine and here I am :( I am thinking of changing the symlinks /initrd.img and /vmlinuz to the previous kernel image and use kexec. Please tell some better way to load the 2.6.31-16 release of kernel from ssh and not the grub boot menu. I am using Ubuntu Karmic.

• JFFS2 poor mount performance

  I run multiple ARM boards with Debian Linux installed. Board is equipped with 512 MB of NAND memory. I've observed that after ~3 months of continuous run booting time increased significantly - it takes over 3 minutes to mount filesystem (JFFS2). System was using about 35% of available storage so I’ve removed unnecessary files (got to ~18%) but this didn't change anything. Then I realized that my software produces directories that are left empty so I’ve removed ~500 empty and unnecessary dirs. This didn’t help either. After system is started I see JFFS2 garbage collector (jffs2_gcd_mtd4) running and occupying over 90% of CPU. Now my question: is there a way to „optimize” JFFS2 filesystem for better performance - faster booting (my system have limited timid to boot up)? It would be great if this optimization could be done remotely - I have no physical access to boards.

• HP DL160 G6 memory PC3-10600R vs PC3-10600E

  I am using a HP DL 160 G6 server that according to specs takes PC3 Registered or Unbuffered. When I combine the two types of memory below the system will not POST. When I use just the first type of memory listed the system will POST. I have two pieces of HP memory that came with the server labeled PC3-10600E-9-10-E0 and then I have some Crucial memory labeled PC3-10600R-9-10-B0 I wager that the R means Registered memory and the E means ECC - then shouldn't the crucial memory boot with the system according to the HP specs? Or does the E mean it is Unbuffered and therefore I shouldn't mix and match as according to this HP memory config doc?

• Weird RAM Upgrade Experience

  I have a laptop, HP EliteBook 8540p having originally 4GB RAM and I've recently bought Corsair Value Select SO-DIMM 16 Go (2x 8 Go) DDR3 1333 MHz. It fits the required RAM specifications perfectly, and once I've inserted them, the BIOS recognizes the memory correctly, but my linux Gentoo running on kernel 3.1.6 SMP x86_64 crashes immediately when I'm running an app which consumes a lot of memory. The laptop crashes as if there's no more battery left, when the memory reaches at least 6000MB ram. Windows 7 doesn't want to run anymore, it shows a blue screen with the IRQ LESS OR EQUAL error if I set 8GB, and it doesn't boot at all if I set 16GB. Is there something I could do to fix this please ?

  I've got an eeePC with a really tiny monitor, so whenever I go (home, faculty, parent's home, friend's home, ...) I attach it to any external monitor I can find. If it matters my system is like this: Archlinux Linux 2.6.36 Xorg 7.6 X server 1.9.2 Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (fully accelerated by intel modules) When I boot up the system, it uses the integrated monitor (LVDS1) only, and I have to manually manually switch to the external monitor (VGA1) using xrandr. Is it possible to configure my Xorg (or whatever) so that it uses the VGA1 output if present?

• Weird symbols on Mac

  Since I've had my mac, I keep seeing this weird symbol. Till today, it had been only in the place of bullet points in OpenOffice.org. The first pictures shows this in a .doc file created on a Windows system. I thought nothing of it - just an annoyance. It appears no matter what the font. Real bullets appear if I delete the text and insert a bulletted list using the toolbar. Then, today I noticed in in iTunes - which seemed strange. Image 3 is a zoom of the character. It says on it: Private Use E000 F8FF. What is it (unicode related?), and how do I get the bullets working properly? Edit: The plot thickens... If I boot in Safe Mode, the symbols look like little snap boards like you'd have at the beginning of filming a scene in a film...

  I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 yesterday on a headless home server. I use the server for a variety of purposes, and what I don't know how to do via SSH I've alway been able to do through VNC. However, since the upgrade vino-server will no longer run if there isn't a monitor attached. Before it used to start up without a problem. Even by attempting to run the server via SSH gives me a "could not load display" error. Summary: I need to get vino-server running at boot time on a server with Ubuntu 10.04, without a monitor attached.

  Just installed Windows Server 2008R2 SP1 to see if it would fix this problem, but it didn't. Until an administrator logs onto the domain controller, there are many events that WFP blocked a connection from Server60 to Server60 or Server60 to Server70. Both server60 and server70 are the domain controllers. One the admin logs on, the WFP events stop. The firewall is off by default GPO. Yes, i know that the WFP kicks in during the boot up sequence until the firewall takes over or in my case does not take over (since Vista), but i clearly should not have to autologon to a domain controller and call autolock or something. • Environment variable for volume names in Windows?

  I'm trying to write a batch file that will look at the volume label of the current drive and report if it's not equivalent to a certain string. Is there a default variable in the shell for this? Can I define one? Am I SOL and I'll actually have to do some (shudder) programming? EDIT: If this is possible in PowerShell that would work fine. (For the curious, we ship our machines with software cloning as a rapid bootable backup solution since most of our customers are daytraders and aren't interested in RAID due to urgency of getting-the-hell-back-to-work-right-away if there's a software corruption problem, and we want to make it immediately obvious if they're booting to the backup drive unintentionally, like say the primary failed entirely. The hope was just to write a simple batch file that would autostart on boot and throw a warning in the event of a problem.)

• if a usb pen drive has 64349 cylinders, is it damaged?

  I have a 4Gb USB pen drive that I'm trying to format with FAT32. When I run fdisk, it gives me this message: The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 64349. There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024, and could in certain setups cause problems with: 1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO) 2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) I've tried deleting the partition table, creating new partitions, etc, but they never work. Sometimes I can write to the drive the first time I use it after formatting it, but then it becomes read-only in both Windows and Linux. I've tried this on multiple computers. Am I doing something wrong, or is the drive reporting an incorrect number of cylinders? Is the drive itself likely to be corrupted, and is there anyway to fix this under Windows Vista or Linux?   Is it possible to create a script/live distro that replaces some system32 files? To explain it a bit more in details: There is a company that has multiple computers (think in 100/1000's) and they all are missing the same system32 files since the company's software removed it. The systems are distributed all over the world and are managed by "normal" people who don't have any knowledge about computers. I want to create a usb stick that i can mail to all those people which contains a script that executes when you boot the usb. this script should replace the missing system32 files without any user input is this possible, and if so how could i manage this?
