• Lenovo Ideapad 205 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  I just wanted to report one thing, because I know there are a lot of Ideapad S205 users out there, that had issues running Ubuntu on their Lenovo Ideapad S205 in the past. Lenovo Ideapad with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS: Everything works out of the box. I just installed it and everything, including the microphone, the webcam, the WLAN, the AMD E-350 CPU/GPU and the sound worked right away. In other words: Everything works. Even the AMD E-350 GPU works very well with the Open Source drivers and with the prop. drivers. The prop. drivers were automatically offered to me via Ubuntu itself. It works great. A long idea, written short: I love it. It's extremly stable and very fast. I am using the German version of the Idepad S205, combined with the 32bit version of Ubuntu. There is only one, single thing to keep in mind when installing Ubuntu on the S205: Plugin your USB/CD/DVD drive in the left USB-Port. I don't know why, but it only works with the USB-Port on the left side of the Netbook. This is only for installing Ubuntu. • Performance Overhead of Encrypted /home

  I have a netbook with Windows on the second partition and Xubuntu (/ and /home) on the third partition. I selected to encrypt my home folder during installation. The performance of the netbook is adequate for the small machine that it is, but I'm looking to improve performance. I could not find much information about the overhead (CPU or drive) associated with home partition encryption. I ran the following, writing to my home partition as well as the the mounted Windows partition: dd if=/dev/zero of=~/dummy bs=512 count=10240 dd if=/dev/zero of=/media/Windows/dummy bs=512 count=10240 The first returned 2.4MB/s and the second returned 2.5MB/s. Can I therefore deduce that there is very little overhead to home folder encryption? I'm not sure if the different filesystems will make any difference (/ and /home are ext3). Update 1 I don't know why I didn't use /tmp instead of the mounted Windows folder. Only /home is encrypted, so /tmp is unencrypted ext3. The results of the dd as above are astounding: ~: 2.4 MB/s /tmp: 42.6 MB/s Comments please? The reason I am asking this is that disk access on the netbook is noticeably slow.   I'm seeing a number of problems trying to use JuJu with our internally deployed Openstack cloud. Most of this appears to be centered around DNS host resolution as well as the need to deal with our company's internal HTTP proxies. Our Openstack deployment relies upon an unroutable 172.16.0.0/12 block of addresses for VLAN allocation to each project (tenant) hosted on our internal cloud. User's have the option of assigning one or more floating addresses to instances, allocated from a block of routable addresses on our internal companies LAN. Currently, Openstack doesn't register instance names with anything other than the DNSMASQ service running on the cloud controller. As such, there's no way to resolve this address through our internal DNS hierarchy (this issue has already been reported as Bug #945505). As such, even though I can bootstrap my JuJu server node, I can't connect to it with the JuJu client, since it can't resolve the local (private) network name. I am able to ssh to the node, once I've assigned it an internally routable (i.e. floating) address. Which leads to the next issue. Next, to install software on an instance running in our cloud, it must have our internal proxy address defined - either in the apt.conf file or via environment variables. Unfortunately, when bootstrapping the server node, there's no provision to pass this info into a instance via JuJu environment.yaml file (if this is even the best way to handle this issue). As a result, the bootstrap node is unable to install the required packages. I'm assuming (dangerous, I know) that the way that I've deployed Openstack in our internal environment is probably not unique. Has anyone else encountered these issues? • NetBeans Sources as a Platform

  By default, when you create a new NetBeans module, the 'development IDE' is the platform to which you'll be deploying your module. It's a good idea to create your own platform and check that into your own repo, so that everyone working on your project will be able to work with a standardized platform, rather than whatever happens to be beneath the development IDE your using. Something else you can do is use the NetBeans sources as your platform, once you've checked them out. That's something I did the other day when trying to see whether adding 'setActivatedNodes' to NbSheet was sufficient for getting UndoRedo enabled in the Properties Window. So that's a good use case, i.e., you'd like to change the NetBeans Platform somehow, or you're fixing a bug, in other words, in some way you need to change the NetBeans Platform sources and then would like to try out the result of your changes as a client of your changes. In that scenario, here's how to set up and use a NetBeans Platform from the NetBeans sources. Run 'ant build platform' on the root of the NetBeans sources. You'll end up with nbbuild/netbeans containing a subfolder 'platform' and a subfolder 'harness'. There's your NetBeans Platform. Go to Tools | NetBeans Platform and browse to nbbuild/netbeans', registering it as your NetBeans Platform. Create a new NetBeans module, using the new NetBeans Platform as the platform. Now the cool thing is you can open any of the NetBeans modules from the NetBeans Platform modules in the NetBeans sources. When you change the source code of one of these modules and then build that module, the changed JAR will automatically be added to the right place in the nbbuild/netbeans folder. And when you do a 'clean' on a NetBeans Platform module, the related JAR will be removed from nbbuild/netbeans. In other words, in this way, by changing the NetBeans sources, you're directly changing the platform that your custom module will be running on when you deploy it. That's pretty cool and gives you a more connected relationship to your platform, since you're able to change it in the same way as the custom modules you create.

• Libgdx Box2d createfixture crashes vm intermittently

  I have a hard to debug problem. I have a Box2D game which creates a wheeled vehicle. I want the vehicle body to reflect when it goes from moving left to moving right. to do this i set a flag in a changelistener on a button and then in update method i destroy and recreate the body facing the other way. it works fine most of the time but if i flip the vehicle several times quickly JVM crashes. no errors nothing in log. i added system.out.prints and the errors occur in the routine that instantiates the new body and before anything gets deleted/removed so i don't think the UI is trying to access null pointers. and if it was it should throw an error. M the crash seems to be at createFixture statements. but the work most of the first time. I tried debugging but the error doesn't happen much when the flips are slow. in any case createFixture drops fairly quickly into jni. Is this a Box2D bug? Is GC the issue? From Mission Control I see the GC is collecting on a period of ooh maybe 5s and flipping slower than that mostly works. how do i debug this? i am win7 64bit with 64bit at and jdk7 64bit. libgdx-0.9.9 and sometimes libgdx-nightly-20140215.

  Flash backs from the past! It's truly amazing to discover that software development from freshman to senior level as well as project management hasn't changed that much. Kerry Nietz describes his memoir from his final year at college to his first job at Fox Software to 'an early retirement' at Microsoft. This title also brought his other fictional novels to my attention. Once again here is the review I published on Amazon: Built to last! I have been around in software development for more than a decade now but honestly I have to admit it is only now that I took the opportunity to read about the history of my used to be primary programming language. In fact, I started with Visual FoxPro 6 back in 1999 and went only down to FoxPro for Windows 2.6 during migration projects - long after the stories described in this title. It is really interesting to see how they actually managed to create a great product with such a small team of developers. "Create the best Report Writer in the world, out of only sawdust, bubblegum, and dreams." - That's the best sentence I'm going to quote from this title in the future. An inspiration to achieve the impossible, only by taking small steps. Just begin the journey - one step after the next one. If you fall, stand up and continue to walk. Kerry takes the reader on an amazing trip through almost 4 years working at a small software company in Perrysburg, Ohio. That went from a another 'look-alike' of the mighty Ashton-Tate dBase to the leading force in database development, long before Microsoft Access (project name: Cirrus) was even finished. It survived Borland Paradox and even nowadays Visual FoxPro is still in daily use in thousands of companies world-wide. Actually, I'm glad that I had the chance to foster my programming knowledge with Visual FoxPro. After his excellent work in software development, Kerry went for a second career as a writer. I'm looking forward to read his other titles soon:

• Best practice with branching source code and application lifecycle

  We are a small ISV shop and we usually ship a new version of our products every month. We use Subversion as our code repository and Visual Studio 2010 as our IDE. I am aware a lot of people are advocating Mercurial and other distributed source control systems but at this point I do not see how we could benefit from these, but I might be wrong. Our main problem is how to keep branches and main trunk in sync. Here is how we do things today: Release new version (automatically create a tag in Subversion) Continue working on the main trunk that will be released next month And the cycle repeats every month and works perfectly. The problem arises when an urgent service release needs to be released. We cannot release it from the main trunk (2) as it is under heavy development and it is not stable enough to be released urgently. In such case we do the following: Create a branch from the tag we created in step (1) Bug fix Test and release Push the change back to main trunk (if applicable) Our biggest problem is merging these two (branch with main). In most cases we cannot rely on automatic merging because e.g.: a lot of changes has been made to main trunk merging complex files (like Visual Studio XML files etc.) does not work very well another developer / team made changes you do not understand and you cannot just merge it So what you think is the best practice to keep these two different versions (branch and main) in sync. • Designing a Content-Based ETL Process with .NET and SFDC

  As my firm makes the transition to using SFDC as our main operational system, we've spun together a couple of SFDC portals where we can post customer-specific documents to be viewed at will. As such, we've had the need for pseudo-ETL applications to be implemented that are able to extract metadata from the documents our analysts generate internally (most are industry-standard PDFs, XML, or MS Office formats) and place in networked "queue" folders. From there, our applications scoop of the queued documents and upload them to the appropriate SFDC CRM Content Library along with some select pieces of metadata. I've mostly used DbAmp to broker communication with SFDC (DbAmp is a Linked Server provider that allows you to use SQL conventions to interact with your SFDC Org data). • Execute code every hour

  I need to create a web service that executes every hour. It will be used to review data in a database and add alerts to a table in the same database if certain conditions are met/not met. What we currently have is: We have end devices that use Python to report to an Amazon Web Services (AWS) virtual server. The AWS server takes that information and stores it in a MySQL database. The AWS server is Linux running Django and Apache. I need to be able to have some python code run every hour that verifies the data that has been stored by the end devices. If certain conditions are not met then a record will be added to the alerts table in the database. We originally contracted to have the above setup created. I am new to Python, Django, and Apache. However, I have already made several changes to the Python code that sends and also receives the data from the end devices. I am a coder that is breaking into web programming. Does anyone have any recommendations on how I can do this?

• How Do I Print Photos?

  Other than for Windows in Ubuntu there are no fancy utilities provided from printer manufacturers to print photos. I am aware of Gnome Photo Printer and of Photoprint, the first being easy to handle, the latter having more options. However I wonder if there are any other or maybe even better alternatives (including plugins) to perform the following tasks: Print photos in the best photo-resolution the driver offers Adjust paper size for standard values of photo papers Choose paper tray if the printer has more than one Print out multiple photos on one page including mixed sizes (grids) Multiple prints with same settings Borderless printing if the printer is capable of this Any additional options like pre-processing for color correction or noise reduction would be nice to have but are not so essential. Update According to this spec it seems not to so easy to accomplish the simple task of printing photos. Indeed all applications I have gone through have major drawbacks that make printing photos almost impossible. Below I will list what put me off using them for photo printing: Gnome Photo Printer: no thumbnails, no grids Photoprint: does not keep settings, GUI broken, no standard photo size, no thumbs Eye Of Gnome: no multiple pages, no grids Gimp + Images Grid Layout: far too many steps to finally find that prints are always different to their previews. F-Spot: no grids Picasa 3: no grids, very few fixed paper sizes, 300 dpi only flPhoto: strange GUI, no thumbs, no printer settings, did not print at all Windows: Ooops - everything works fine! But I want Ubuntu to do this! After half a pack of ink cartridges and half a pack of photo paper cards I am getting tired of testing. At least Gimp and Picasa looked promising but both don't keep their promise when it comes to printing. I'd already be happy to quickly print a few photos with EOG if bug #80220 was fixed - but it's still on "wishlist".

• Synaptics error "no touchpad found" at startup on HP laptop

  I know there are a lot of topics on the synaptics touchpad not working, but I can't seem to find the answer to my problem anywhere. Please forgive me if I missed it. Here is what happened. After using the "ambient light" F11 key on my HP laptop (Compaq nc8430), the touchpad was disabled and I couldn't get it to work. Then I found this thread : "Synaptic touchpad on laptop not working". And Salem's answer totally solved my problem, both for the session fix and for the permanent fix. But since then, after each reboot I get the same error pop-up, with the following content: No touchpad found. No touchpad was found in this system. If the system has a touchpad, please make sure that the synaptics driver is properly installed and configured. If your touchpad is not found, though the driver is installed and configured correctly, please compile detailed information about your touchpad hardware and report this issue to the issue tracker. Needless to say, the driver is indeed installed, activated and configured (even though it's kind of useless now, since I guess the .conf file I created is doing all the work). I know it's a minor issue, because the touchpad does work properly, but it's getting really annoying... So, could anyone please help me fix this error pop-up problem ? Thank you !

• Checking if your SIMPLE databases need a log backup

  Hopefully you have read the blog by William Durkin explaining why your SIMPLE databases need a log backup in some cases. There is a SQL Server bug that means in some cases databases are marked as being in SIMPLE RECOVERY but have a log wait type that shows they are not properly configured. Please read his blog for the full explanation and a great description of how to reproduce the issue. As part of our (William happens to be my Boss) work to recover our affected databases I wrote this small PowerShell script to quickly check our servers for databases that needed the attention that William details.  cls $Servers = “Server01″,”Server02″,”etc”,”etc” foreach($Server in $Servers){ write-host “************” $server “****************”     $server = New-Object Microsoft.sqlserver.management.smo.server $Server     foreach($db in $Server.databases){         $db | where {$_.RecoveryModel -eq “Simple” -and $_.logreusewaitstatus -ne “nothing”} | select name, LogReuseWaitStatus     } } If you get any results from this query then you should consult Williams blog for the details on what action you should take. This script does give out false positives if in some circumstances depending on how busy your databases are. Hopefully this will let you check your servers quickly and if you find any problems you can reference Williams blog to understand what you need to do.
