• Firefox 15 hangs with Ubuntu kernel update

  I recently ran updates and it told me that in order to get those updates I had to update my kernel. I did that and also updated Firefox to 15. Since then Firefox hangs/gray screens sites I go to. This lasts anywhere from 5-10 seconds to 2-3 minutes. I have restarted Firefox with all add-ons disabled but it still did the same thing. I found a bug report on Launchpad that sounded like what was happening with me, but I haven't received any error codes, just the hanging/frozen screens. Also it seems that it ups my CPU making the rest of Ubuntu lag while Firefox is hung. I would guess the cause is a conflict between the updated kernel and the updated Firefox, but I'm still fairly new at Ubuntu and not sure where to go from here. Is there anything else to try? • What FOSS solutions are available to manage software requirements?

  In the company where I work, we are starting to plan to be compliant to the software development life cycle. We already have, wiki, vcs system, bug tracking system, and a continuous integration system. The next step we want to have is to start to manage, in a structured way, software requirements. We dont want to use a wiki or shared documentation because we have many input (developer, manager, commercial, security analyst and other) and we dont want to handle proliferation of .doc around the network share. We are trying to search and we hope we can find and use a FOSS software to manage all this things. We have about 30 people, and don't have a budget for commercial software. We need a free solution for requirements management. What we want is software that can manage: Required features: Software requirements divided in a structured configurable way Versioning of the requirements (history, diff, etc, like source code) Interdependency of requirements (child of, parent of, related to) Rule Based Access Control for data handling Multi user, multi project File upload (for graph, document related to or so on) Report and extraction features Optional Features: Web Based Test case Time based management (timeline, excepted data, result data) Person allocation and so on Business related stuff Hardware allocation handling I have already play with testlink and now i'm playing with RTH, the next one i try is redmine.

• Doesn't boot after installation

  Downloaded Ubuntu 12.04.1-alternate-amd64 Installed to USB stick Integrity check fails on ./install/netboot/ubuntu-installer/amd64/pxelinux.cfg/default but that seems to be a known bug where the file isn't included in the alternative 64-bit ISO and shouldn't affect installation. I ignore it and proceed on. For partitioning on 2 SSD Drives: Partition 300MB and 63GB on both RAID1 the 300MB and 63GBs Set the 300MB to EXT4 on /boot Encrypt the rest as MD1 and set it for LVM Create two volumes from MD1: 4GB swap and 59GB to / I go through the installation and get to the point where it says everything is ready and to take the media out so as to boot from the drives I receive the error "Error: No video mode activated." on startup I've read that this can be solved by running "cp /usr/share/grub/*.pf2 /boot/grub" and then updating grub but I can't get to a place where I can actually run this command. In rescue mode I can get to a shell from installer with /boot mounted to /target. So from there I can run "cp /cdrom/boot/grub/font.pf2 /target/grub/" but can't figure out a way to get it to update grub after that or know how what to change in manually updating the grub.cfg file. If I try other devices to mount the root filesystem I get the error "An error occurred while mounting the device you entered for your root file system". It just sits on the video mode error and doesn't progress further. Googling around it seems like people see the error briefly before it continues booting, not getting stuck on it the way I am which leads me to believe that error may be unrelated to Ubuntu not booting. So any ideas as to what I should try next or what needs to be done to install Ubuntu and get it to boot would be helpful.

• Is there an established or defined best practice for source control branching between development and production builds?

  Thanks for looking. I struggled in how to phrase my question, so let me give an example in hopes of making more clear what I am after: I currently work on a dev team responsible for maintaining and adding features to a web application. We have a development server and we use source control (TFS). Each day everyone checks in their code and when the code (running on the dev server) passes our QA/QC program, it goes to production. Recently, however, we had a bug in production which required an immediate production fix. The problem was that several of us developers had code checked in that was not ready for production so we had to either quickly complete and QA the code, or roll back everything, undo pending changes, etc. In other words, it was a mess. This made me wonder: Is there an established design pattern that prevents this type of scenario. It seems like there must be some "textbook" answer to this, but I am unsure what that would be. Perhaps a development branch of the code and a "release-ready" or production branch of the code?

• Oracle SPARC SuperCluster and US DoD Security guidelines

  I've worked in the past to help our government customers understand how best to secure Solaris.  For my customer base that means complying with Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) from the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA).  I recently worked with a team to apply both the Solaris and Oracle 11gR2 database STIGs to a SPARC SuperCluster.  The results have been published in an Oracle White paper. The SPARC SuperCluster is a highly available, high performance platform that incorporates: SPARC T4-4 servers Exadata Storage Servers and software ZFS Storage appliance InfiniBand interconnect Flash Cache  Oracle Solaris 11 Oracle VM for SPARC Oracle Database 11gR2 It is targeted towards large, mission critical database, middleware and general purpose workloads.  Using the Oracle Solution Center we configured a SSC applied DoD security guidance and confirmed functionality and performance of the system.  The white paper reviews our findings and includes a number of security recommendations.  In addition, customers can contact me for the itemized spreadsheets with our detailed STIG reports. Some notes: There is no DISA STIG  documentation for Solaris 11.  Oracle is working to help DISA create one using their new process. As a result, our report follows the Solaris 10 STIG document and applies it to Solaris 11 where applicable. • How to facilitate code reviews in a small team for embedded software?

  Short Question Does a cost-effective tool / workflow exist to facilitate code reviews in a small team? More specifically, a small team that relies on post-commit code reviews. Background Our team currently consists of 3 full time and 1 part time software engineers, with plans on hiring more in the near future. Due to our team size and volume of projects we all must juggle, the pre-commit workflow that major tools (such as Review Board and Code Collaborator) use is not obtainable for us right now. The best we can do at the moment is to perform post-commit reviews before major releases or as time permits. Nearly all of our projects are hosted on RepositoryHosting.com (which I highly recommend) and contain a mixture of SVN and GIT repositories. Current Thoughts Since I cannot find a tool that fits our needs right now, I am turning to TRAC that is built into our repository's site. At the moment we use TRAC to file tickets and track milestones, so to me this seems like a natural fit for code review results as well. The direction I am heading in right now is to use a spread sheet(s) to log all of the bugs and comments. Do some macro magic to get it in a format that I can use TRAC's import ticket method and use TRAC's ticketing system to create the action items / bug reports automatically. The auto ticket generation is darn near a must have, adding in bugs and comments one at a time from a web-gui is really painful. Secondary Question If this workflow makes sense, is there a good / standard template to use as a code review log?

Error details: Unknown Error Description  MessageId:  {********} InstanceID: {********}   My code was pretty simple and the source of the error was hidden somewhere inside it.   msg_MyMessage(SMTP.CC) = var_CC; msg_MyMessage(SMTP.From) = var_From; msg_MyMessage(SMTP.Subject) = var_Subject; msg_MyMessage(SMTP.EmailBodyText) = var_Message;    // #1    msg_MyMessage(SMTP.SMTPHost) = " localhost "; msg_MyMessage(SMTP.SMTPAuthenticate) = 0; When I added line #2, this frustrating error disappeared.    msg_MyMessage(SMTP.EmailBodyTextCharset) = "UTF-8"; // #2 Conclusion: If we use the SMTP.EmailBodyText property, we must set up the SMTP.EmailBodyTextCharset property. To me it looks like a bug in BizTalk. [Maybe it is "by design", but in this case give us a useful error text!!!] And don't ask me how much time I've spent with this investigation.

  SQL Server 2012 has many interesting features but the most talked feature is AlwaysOn. Performance tuning is always a hot topic. I see lots of need of the same and lots of business around it. However, many times when people talk about performance tuning they think of it as a either query tuning, performance tuning, or server tuning. All are valid points, but performance tuning expert usually understands the business workload and business logic before making suggestions. For example, if performance tuning expert analysis workload and realize that there are plenty of reports as well read only queries on the server they can for sure consider alternate options for the same. If read only data is not required real time or it can accept the data which is delayed a bit it makes sense to divide the workload. A secondary replica of the original data which can serve all the read only queries and report is a good idea in most of the cases where there is plenty of workload which is not dependent on the real time data. SQL Server 2012 has introduced the feature of AlwaysOn which can very well fit in this scenario and provide a solution in Read-Only Workloads. Microsoft has recently announced a white paper which is based on absolutely the same subject. I recommend it to read for every SQL Enthusiast who is are going to implement a solution to offload read-only workloads to secondary replicas. • Rawr Code Clone Analysis&ndash;Part 0

  Code Clone Analysis is a cool new feature in Visual Studio 11 (vNext).  It analyzes all the code in your solution and attempts to identify blocks of code that are similar, and thus candidates for refactoring to eliminate the duplication.  The power lies in the fact that the blocks of code don't need to be identical for Code Clone to identify them, it will report Exact, Strong, Medium and Weak matches indicating how similar the blocks of code in question are.   People that know me know that I'm anal enthusiastic about both writing clean code, and taking old crappy code and making it suck less. So the possibilities for this feature have me pretty excited if it works well - and thats a big if that I'm hoping to explore over the next few blog posts. I'm going to grab the Rawr source code from CodePlex (a World Of Warcraft gear calculator engine program), run Code Clone Analysis against it, then go through the results one-by-one and refactor where appropriate blogging along the way.  My goals with this blog series are twofold: Evaluate and demonstrate Code Clone Analysis Provide some concrete examples of refactoring code to eliminate duplication and improve the code-base Here are the initial results:   Code Clone Analysis has found: 129 Exact Matches 201 Strong Matches 300 Medium Matches 193 Weak Matches Also indicated is that there was a total of 45,181 potentially duplicated lines of code that could be eliminated through refactoring.  Considering the entire solution only has 109,763 lines of code, if true, the duplicates lines of code number is pretty significant. In the next post we’ll start examining some of the individual results and determine if they really do indicate a potential refactoring.

• SMART Status Data Interpretation - Disk Utility

  Last week my external harddisk (Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB in a custom enclosure) showed signs of failure (Disk Utility SMART Pre-failure status - several bad sectors) and I decided to change it. I bought a new HDD (Seagate Barracuda 2TB) and connected it to my Ubuntu box with a SATA to USB cable that could not report SMART status. I copied all the contents of the old HDD to the new HDD (one partition with rsync, the other with parted cp) and then gently replaced the old HDD with the new one inside my aluminum enclosure. For obscure reasons after reconnecting the new HDD through the old enclosure, the Linux box could not detect my partitions. I recovered the partitions with testdisk and restarted the computer. After the restart I checked the SMART status of the new HDD an I get this: Read Error Rate --------------- Normalized 108 Worst 99 Threshold 6 Value 16737944 I got a high value on the Seek Error Rate as well. Wondering why this happens I copied 2 GB directory from one partition to the other and rechecked the SMART status (5 minutes later). This time I got the following: Read Error Rate --------------- Normalized 109 Worst 99 Threshold 6 Value 24792504 As you see there has been an increase in the error rate. I am unable to interpret these numbers. Is my new hard disk already dying? What are the acceptable values in these fields for Seagate hard disks? Then why the assessment is still good? While I could get temperature and airflow temperature data from my old HDD, I can not fetch them for the new one. I noticed that my old hdd had got really hot sometimes. Is it possible that the enclosure is killing the harddisks due to high temperature?... Thanks

Within the results tabulation WolframAlpha provided me with all sorts of neat data break downs. I now know exactly how many days it is to my next birthday, the composition of my aggregate posting habits (how many posts are status updates, links, or photos), the time of day when I do the most posting (and what the composition of those posts is), and my average post length. I also know my most liked post and my most commented on post. It will even crunch the numbers on your network of friends (60.6% of my friends are married, for example). By far one of the more interesting data analysis it does on the friendship data, however, is organizing all your friends into relationship clusters so you can see who in your Facebook network is friends with other people in your Facebook network. The service from WolframAlpha is free: simply visit the WolframAlpha search portal and type in “Facebook report” to start the process. You’ll be prompted to create a WolframAlpha account if you don’t have one and to authorize the WolframAlpha Facebook app to access your data. Your Facebook data is cached to your WolframAlpha account for one hour in order to crunch the numbers and display the results. • Force Blank TextBox with ASP.Net MVC Html.TextBox

  I recently ran into a problem with the following scenario: I have data with a parent/child data with a one-to-many relationship from the parent to the child. I want to be able to update parent and existing child data AND add a new child record all in a single post. I don't want to create a model just to store the new values. One of the things I LOVE about MVC is how flexible it is in dealing with posted data.  If you have data that isn't in your model, you can simply use the non-strongly-typed HTML helper extensions and pass the data into your actions as parameters or use the FormCollection.  I thought this would give me the solution I was looking for.  I simply used Html.TextBox("NewChildKey") and Html.TextBox("NewChildValue") and added parameters to my action to take the new values.  So here is what my action looked like: [HttpPost] public ActionResult EditParent(int? id, string newChildKey, string newChildValue, FormCollection forms) {     Model model = ModelDataHelper.GetModel(id ?? 0);     if (model != null)     {         if (TryUpdateModel(model))         {             if (ModelState.IsValid)             {                 model = ModelDataHelper.UpdateModel(model);             }             string[] keys = forms.GetValues("ChildKey");             string[] values = forms.GetValues("ChildValue");             ModelDataHelper.UpdateChildData(id ?? 0, keys, values);             ModelDataHelper.AddChildData(id ?? 0, newChildKey, newChildValue);             model = ModelDataHelper.GetModel(id ?? 0);         }        return View(report);     }    return new EmptyResult(); } The only problem with this is that MVC is TOO smart.  Even though I am not using a model to store the new child values, MVC still passes the values back to the text boxes via the model state.  The fix for this is simple but not necessarily obvious, simply remove the data from the model state before returning the view: ModelState.Remove("NewChildKey"); ModelState.Remove("NewChildValue"); Two lines of code to save a lot of headaches.

  Hello, today we would like to show you few improvements we have prepared in PHP Smarty Framework for NetBeans 7.3. So let's talk about adjustable toggle comment action and code templates. Configurable Comments As some of you requested we implemented toggle comment action with adjustable behavior. In NetBeans 7.3 you can choose in Options between commenting as a "Smarty comments everywhere" or "Language sensitive comments" in Smarty Templates. Toggle comment language sensitive: Toggle comment as Smarty comment everywhere: Code Templates In NetBeans 7.3 we will provide by default many code templates inside Smarty templates or directly inside Smarty tags. Available should be code templates for all built-in or custom functions and modifiers of Smarty 3.x. Besides that you should be able to define additional custom templates easily in Options -> Editor -> Code Templates for "Smarty Templates" or directly for "Smarty Markup" (which means code templates inside Smarty tag). You can also take advantage of selection's template which are able to wrap your code with chosen Smarty tag. That's all for today. • JDK 7 Feature Complete Milestone Reached

  The JDK 7 project has reached Feature Complete (FC). This means that development and QA have finished all planned feature and test development work in the release and are moving the focus to testing and bug fixing on all supported JDK 7 platforms. This is a major step towards JDK 7 General Availability (GA) and implies that we are tracking close to the plan published on openjdk.java.net. (The original plan was FC on 12/16. We hit this less than a week late, but verifying that everything was done in time took a couple of weeks due to the intervening holidays.) The definition of the FC milestone allows for exceptions to be integrated later. There are very few such exceptions in the project, the most prominent being updated JAXP/JAXB/JAX-WS and integration of the enhanced JMX agent from JRockit. Our project management does not expect the exceptions to have any negative impact on the release plan. The project may still be delayed if the Expert Groups for the JSRs included in Java SE 7 (203, 292, 334, 336) decide to introduce changes which cannot be accomodated within the existing schedule. Apart from that caveat, Oracle remains confident with the published plan.

• How can I get Kubuntu to use my Multimedia keys

  I have tried to get Kubuntu to use my multimedia keys, and I cannot figure out how to do this. This feature is default in Ubuntu and in Linux Mint. They just work. I have followed the KUbuntu wiki post on Multimedia keys. I tried to enable Multimedia maps with xmodmap. It did not work. I tried to use the KDE GUI and could not seem to make the function I wanted work. The functions I am trying to get to work are fn+F12 = skip song fn+F11 = previous song fn+F10 = stop fn+ F9 = play/pause. I know this is possible because it worked in Ubuntu and in Mint, but it does not work in Kubuntu. I have submitted a bug report on this issue. Disclaimer: I am using Kubuntu 12.04 I have looked at this post, but Is there a way to enable Ubuntu Keyboard shortcuts in Kubuntu? do not know what to call the keys in that program.

• nvidia segfault crashes XServer (12.04 fresh install)

  I am on a fresh install of 12.04, and my video card is a Quadro FX 570, which appears to be supported (see output of unity_support_test below). But my Xserver crashes randomly and causes my session to just shutdown and bring me back to the logging screen. This happens several times per hour. • Source-control your BI Publisher reports

  Version control systems (VCS) like Subversion, Git and the others has been widely adopted and became the must-have tool in any software development project. Source artifacts and checked out, modified, checked in, all the history of changes is tracked by the VCS.  But what if the development tool stores the source/configuration artifacts not in your laptop's hard drive, but in some shared repository instead? Well, we definitely need a way for export/import our artifacts from/to this repository.   Oracle BI Publisher report development approach is based on such a shared repository model (catalog), and starting from BI Publisher 11.1.1.5 Oracle ships Catalog Utility, which can be utilized to export/import the reports from the command line.  To start using the BI Publisher Catalog Utility you should: Go to the file system of the server where BI Publisher binaries has been installed and locate the following file: <MW_HOME>/Oracle_BI1/clients/bipublisher/BIPCatalogUtil.zip Copy the file to your local filesystem and unzip it. I will refer to this unzipped directory as <BIP_CLIENT_DIR> below If you do not want to pass server BI Publisher server URL, username and password during each invocation, modify the corresponding values inside <BIP_CLIENT_DIR>/config/xmlp-client-config.xml Open the terminal window and go to <BIP_CLIENT_DIR>/bin Make sure that the following environment variables are set: JAVA_HOME, ORACLE_HOME Now it's time to run the utility: if you are on Linux - just run BIPCatalogUtil.sh and pass the parameters according to the utility documentation if you are on MS Windows the bad news are that the command script for MS Windows is missing, and support.oracle.com note 1333726.1 says that a temporary solution is "create a .cmd file by setting up a classpath and copying the same commands from the .sh script". • Interesting SSMS issue with waittype of PREEMPTIVE_OS_LOOKUPACCOUNTSID

  Saw a recent issue with SQL2008 sp 1 where SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) appeared to hang when a DBA expanded the database users tab of a database… ie like this :-   When we looked at the waittype of the SSMS session - via sys.dm_os_waiting_tasks– it was waiting on PREEMPTIVE_OS_LOOKUPACCOUNTSID. I’d not come across this waittype before, and there was very little information out on the web for it.. Looking at this issue using SQL Profiler – it them became apparent that SSMS was waiting on the function SUSER_SNAME. I did a quick test using SET STATISTICS TIME to prove it was the SUSER_SNAME function causing our issue :- SELECT * FROM sys.database_principals   -- completes in 6 milliseconds SELECT SUSER_SNAME(sid),* FROM sys.database_principals  -- completes in 188941 milliseconds. suser_sname validates a sid against Active Directory.. What I haven’t mentioned so far is that the database in question had been restored from a server on a different domain. This domain was untrusted from the current domain. However, it appeared that SSMS was still trying to validate the Windows login of each user when displaying the users list…. and taking a long time to return NULL for each user from the untrusted domain. When all users that had a login from the untrusted domain are removed from the database – this fixed the issue. To find out the users that had this issue :- SELECT name FROM sys.database_principals WHERE type_desc IN(‘WINDOWS_USER’, ‘WINDOWS_GROUP’) and SUSER_SNAME(sid) IS NULL Although I have not raised this as a case with MS – I do think this is a bug in SSMS – I do not see why windows logins should need to be validated when displaying only user details..
