• Server 2008 email on Event variables

  One of the new features of Server 2008 is the ability to attach a task to a specific event in the event logs. One of the actions available is to send an email through a SMTP server. This is working great, however it would be ideal if in the message body, the Event contents could be placed. I have tried using $eventdescription and %eventdescription%, but those are just shots in the dark. Any amount of googling produces no results. Does anyone know if this is possible? Update: Sparks' suggestion below is a step in the right direction I believe, however that method doesn't seem to work for all values. For example, I can pull the RecordID, Severity and Channel as shown, but I can't use the same method to retreive the EventID, or most importantly the description. • Cannot terminate process, "already terminated"

  On Windows 8, I regularly get processes into a state where I can't terminate them. Skypekit.exe seems to be the process that's most likely to trigger that issue, but other processes can do that, too. When I try to terminate these processes, I sometimes get an "access denied" message, sometimes nothing happens - but every following attempt to kill that process results in an "access denied" message, too, even though I... have administrative rights (and ran the task manager with it) own that process have the right to terminate it "Process Hacker 2" shows a more detailed error message, stating that I couldn't terminate the process because it already is terminated. Still, the process is most definitely still there, because every task manager I tested still can see it. Process Hacker's "Terminator" is unable to kill such a process, but when running the "Close the process' handles" tactic, Process Hacker gets stuck himself, leaving its windows in "not responding". In that state, other task managers are in turn unable to kill Process Hacker. The only way I found to actually end these processes is to shutdown (which works without any problems). Why is this happening? How can I kill these processes?

• what are these weird IP address connections in resource monitor?

  I decided to check out Resource Monitor (on the 'Performance' tab in Task Manager, Windows 7) and I noticed in the "Network" section that the 'System' image name kept making a bunch (~5 at a time) of connections to random IP addresses, it would show anywhere from 1-500 bytes/sec 'sent'. They would stay connected for 1-2 minutes. -All web browsers are closed So, first thing I did was run a trace from network-tools.com on some of these IP addresses. 8/10 were outside of US and did not resolve to any host name. Of the 10 IP addresses I traced, 2 were in US, 4 showed origins in China, and one each to Algeria, Russia, Pakistan, Korea. (!) So, the next thing I did was turn off my wireless card, watch the connections disappear, then turn the card back on, and within 30 seconds more random connections were created by System, with different IP addresses from the first time. The next thing I did was go open Task Manager, Show Processes From All Users, then I killed just about everything that wasn't (what appeared to be) a windows process. Turned on wi-fi, and again within 30 seconds, random IP addresses connect for ~ 1 min at a time, new ones coming and going. I occasionally use bit torrent on this machine, but there was definitely no process that seemed related to bt running after I went through task manager, and bt wasn't open to begin with. So, any ideas on what these connections might be for? I have been using Ad-Aware Free and AVG Free on this computer for a while now, always up to date..

• NTbackup doesn't complete on system state

  I have a Windows 2003 server that is running a semi-custom backup task. The scheduled task calls NTbackup with a few switches depending on whether it is a full or incremental backup. Most of the time, the NTbackup completes fine, and the wrapper then appends the NTbackup log into its own log before adding a few final comments and completing. The problem I am having is that sometimes, NTbackup seems to just... blank out. It always completes backup of the C: and E: drives, but then it will start the system state and not add any more messages into the event log saying it completed that. And the NTbackup log is left empty, since it doesn't write anything to the log until all the backup tasks are complete. This is causing the wrapper to append no text into its own log. That causes problems for us because we read the information out of that log to determine whether backups are failing. The wrapper task also reports that it is completing normally in the event log. Anyone ever seen a case where system state doesn't complete consistently? To be clear, the server is not logging any error messages anywhere. It's just not seeming to complete or log anything.

• Missing Memory on Windows Server 2008

  I have a windows 2008 x64 server with 8GB of RAM installed. Task Manager and Resource Monitor both insist that 7.5GB of the RAM is in use. However, the memory list under Processes (Memory Private Bytes) doesn't add up. I do have Show Processes from all users checked and hand adding the numbers I come up with about 3.5GB of RAM. I also looked at the latest copy of SysInternals Process Explorer. And neither the Private Bytes or Working Set adds up to more than about 3.5GB of RAM in use. What's going on? ===== Update: I bounced the server to see what would happen with the memory utilization. After boot and regular operations began it sat at 3GB of RAM usage. 18 hours later, it's back up to 6.8GB of usage with no indication as to where the additional 3.5GB or so of RAM is being used. Here are links to screen shots of the resource monitor and task manager: Resource Monitor Task Manager Update 2: Well, I believe I located the problem. When I detached one of the larger databases from my sql server the amount of ram shown as "in use" dropped drastically. The Memory Private Bytes count barely moved. So I'm guessing that SQL server has some way of allocating memory where it doesn't really show up in any of the monitors. I went further and created a new database file, then transferred all of the data from the one I detached. Even though it has the same data, and the same transactions going through it, the memory in use has stayed low. Maybe there was some corruption in the DB? I'll leave it to the DB gods and go searching for another "problem" ;)

• How to make Microsoft JVM work on Windows 7?

  I am struggling with the following problem. I cannot install MS JVM 3810 properly on Windows 7. When I start Interner Explorer 8 without starting any java 1.1 programs choosing Java custom settings under Internet options causes the crash of the browser. I have some Java 1.1 programs that work well in Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP after the installation of MS JVM 3810. I know that it is not advised to use this old JVM but it is not a short-term option to port the programs in newer Java since it contains 3rd party components. Complete rewrite is a long-term plan. Strangely jview and appletviewer (jview /a) works from a console so the MS JVM 3810 is not completely busted just IE 8 does not like it. The problem with the appletviewer is that it cannot connect to the server even if both signed and unsigned content in Java custom settings have been set to Enable all. (Since Java custom settings was unreachable due to the crash the modifications - including My computer - were performed through the registry and pre-checked to behave correctly on Windows XP and Internet Explorer 8.) If jview was working then I could at least think of a workaround. Is there a way to configure MS JVM or jview properly on Windows 7? Another options would be: Checking Internet Explorer 9 Beta. Using virtualbox and Windows XP older IE in it. Delaying Windows 7 upgrade. ... Update Finally we have modified all the programs to work parallelly as applet and application as well. This way the programs can still be used from browser on older Windows versions. On Windows 7 the applications are started from the desktop. Installation to all user machine can easily be solved since they already have a large common application drive. The code update is fortunately only a few lines of modification: including a main method in the applet class. Furthermore instead of the starting html page a bat file is used to set the classpath before the startup with jview.

• Why is my browser using so much memory?

  Hi. I've recently had problems with Firefox running very slowly when I have many tabs open; say 20 tabs. My whole system would slow down. I decided to give Google Chrome a try, and it started out fine. But lately I am finding that it too, slows down my whole system. Looking at Task Manager, chrome.exe is using about 250MB of memory in about 6 different entries in task manager. However, when I shut Chrome down, memory usage is reduced by about 600MB. How can this be? (shows drop in memory usage after ending Chrome.) When my system locks up with Chrome having many tabs open, it takes 10 seconds to load the Start Menu, 10 seconds to expand All Programs, and each folder and subfolder, and 30 seconds for the program to be highlighted under my mouse. It also takes 10 seconds to switch to Notepad. Why is Chrome appearing to use so much more memory than Task Manager indicates? Why is my pagefile being used when I have around 1.1GB of memory? Can I set Chrome to run in RAM and not in the pagefile? How can 20 tabs use 600MB? That's 30MB per tab. Thanks for your help.

• Cannot Add Particular Word to Dictionary

  I am trying to add a particular word to my custom dictionary using Word 2007. (The word happens to be "deserialized".) When I right-click on the word and click Add to Dictionary, the red underline does not go away. When I use the Spelling & Grammar tool from the Review tab on the ribbon, it will stop on that word; clicking the Add to Dictionary button has no effect. Oddly, I am able to add other words to the custom dictionary without a problem. I recently added "deserializes", for instance. I have only encountered this problem with that one particular word. Does anyone know what might be wrong and how I might fix it? Clarifications My document and all its content is set to English (United States). My custom dictionary is set to apply to All Languages, which is the default value. "Serialize" is in the US English default dictionary, but "deserialize" and its various forms is not.

• Shell replacement for kiosk environment with desktop icons

  I have to deploy around 80 touch-screen terminals for my company. We're going to run several Windows applications on those terminals and they'll be operated by touch input only. I basically want those machines to run in a kiosk mode, so employees won't be able to launch any programs than the ones they're supposed to (also, this will hide the task bar/start menu, which will give it a much nicer, corporate look). There's usually one app that should automatically launch on startup and other apps that can be launched from the desktop. I've tried to accomplish this (under Windows 7 Pro) with a custom shell replacement. This removes the task bar/start menu like I described earlier. I used an AutoHotKey script for this, because it's easy to, for instance, define hotkeys so admins will still be able to launch stuff like Windows Explorer (okay, I know I could just launch it from the task manager [Ctrl+Shift+Esc] but I'm considering locking that as well). So far so good. Some problems though: No desktop icons. Needed to launch apps from the desktop. No wallpaper. Required for CI. Is there any way around this? I wouldn't mind using another shell replacement, as long as it's reasonably lightweight. I'd love to get the wallpaper and desktop icons to show with something like AutoHotKey though. Thanks!

• allow public access to subfolder of protected folder on apache

  I have password-protected the root folder of my website while i do maintenance, but I want to display a custom 401 error page to let people know the site is under construction. Unfortunately, my web host doesn't allow me write access to anything outside the root folder of my website, so this custom error page must by stored in the root folder or one of its subfolders. Instead of my custom error page I get the Apache default error page and it also says "Additionally, a 401 Authorization Required error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request." I searched for ways to make a subfolder of a protected directory public, and all I could find was to use the "Satisfy any" directive, but this doesn't work for me. As I've been told: You need to configure the custom DNS server in your VPS, to setup the custom nameservers. Please refer the following article that would help: http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/wiki/index.php/Quick_HOWTO_:_Ch18_:_Configuring_DNS Once you configure the nameserver records, please update the domain registrar panel with the custom nameserver details. I tried to follow this guide but it seems to be a bit outdated, and I am complete newb with non-windows systems. I also scanned the google for other articles which could help me with this problem but, alas, nothing I found was of any value for someone who doesn't know this stuff better than his own pockets. I realize this is quite a complex thing to do, but maybe there is some way to automate it? Or a better solution, like a paid service which would act as my nameservers (this one would be interesting), or even hoped to find some company which "rents" people to do stuff like that. Blah, any help will be appreciated, I am at a complete loss here. I can follow some of these steps, but then I soon find that half of the files which are mentioned in the article are somehow not existing anywhere on the server which confuses me, and once we get to the point of creating Zone I can't really decipher all the things written there :/. As per title, my system is Debian 5.0.

• Is there some sort of CacheDependency in System.Runtime.Caching?

  I heard that .NET 4 has a new caching API. Okay, so the good old System.Web.Caching.Cache (which is, by the way, still there in .NET 4) has the ability to set so-called CacheDependency objects to determine whether a cached item is expired or not. One can also specify custom logic for determining whether a cached item is still useable or not by deriving a custom subclass from CacheDependency. I'm curious, is there a way to provide such a logic in the new API?

• How to troubleshoot errors with TeamCity

  I'm following this guide to set up a small environment for source control and automated builds - mostly for learning what it is and how it works, but also for using in those of my hobby projects that I believe will actually be useful some day. However, at the step where he commits and builds, I fail to get a success status in the TeamCity history log. I keep getting the error described in the stack trace below. • NSFetchedResultsController fetch request - updating predicate and UITableView

  In my iPhone Core Data app I have it configured in a master-detail view setup. The master view is a UITableView that lists objects of the List entity. The List entity has a to-many relationship with the Task entity (called "tasks"), and the Task entity has an inverse to-one relationship with List called "list". When a List object is selected in the master view, I want the detail view (another UITableView) to list the Task objects that correspond to that List object. What I've done so far is this: In the detail view controller I've declared a property for a List object: @property (nonatomic, retain) List *list; Then in the master view controller I use this table view delegate method to set the list property of the detail view controller when a list is selected: - (void)tableView:(UITableView *)aTableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { NSManagedObject *selectedObject = [[self fetchedResultsController] objectAtIndexPath:indexPath]; detailViewController.list = (List*)selectedObject; } Then, I've overriden the setter for the list property in the detail view controller like this: - (void)setList:(List*)newList { if (list != newList) { [list release]; list = [newList retain]; NSPredicate *newPredicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"(list == %@)", list]; [NSFetchedResultsController deleteCacheWithName:@"Root"]; [[[self fetchedResultsController] fetchRequest] setPredicate:newPredicate]; NSError *error = nil; if (![[self fetchedResultsController] performFetch:&error]) { NSLog(@"Unresolved error %@, %@", error, [error userInfo]); abort(); } } } What I'm doing here is setting a predicate on the fetched results to filter out the objects so that I only get the ones that belong to the selected List object. However, when I select a list item, nothing really happens. Nothing in the table view changes, it stays empty. I'm sure my logic is flawed in several places, advice is appreciated Thanks

I'd like to write a custom filter for that adapter so that when I call getListAdapter().getFilter().filter("abc") the list will get filtered by an arbitrary transformation of "abc". I thought I would just try to override ArrayAdapter.getFilter(), but that requires I re-implement the private ArrayAdapter.ArrayFilter which requires access to a bunch of ArrayAdapter's private instances. What's the simplest way to do this?

• Adding button to jqGrid top toolbar

  Looks like the default toolbar for jqGrid is always at the bottom. Buttons like Next/Prev page and the dropdown to select the number of rows per page will always show at the bottom of the grid. I found a way to add a custom top toolbar and push custom buttons into it. What a really need is a way to add default functionality (like paging) to the top of the grid, instead the bottom.

Create a custom view or create an empty window with a backing NSWindowController and then add stuff to it when the window is opened? I've seen the examples on the O'Reilly Cocoa book and those effectively create a custom NSView. Is this the right way to do it, 8 year later?

• Project compilation requires a class that is not used anywhere

  When I build with ant my project that uses libgdx, I get a strange error. It says that a class com.google.gwt.dom.client.ImageElement is not found, but it isn't used at all in the code. How can I find what makes this class necessary? Even searching over the whole project doesn't give any results. It says that error is at PixmapTextureAtlas.java:16 (class source), but there is no code that uses that ImageElement class. Adding the library containing com.google.gwt.dom.client.ImageElement class helps, of course, but I'd like to figure out why this class in needed. • How to get a collection of UIComponents based on a stylename in Adobe Flex

  Does anyone know an Actionscript equivalent of the javascript getElementsByClassName. What I would like to do is add a custom 'stylename' to various components which I can then use to get a collection of these objects and therefore process their visibility property. The idea is I want to hide various components based on what roles a logged in user has - I just want to make this flexible by adding an array of rolenames to a custom property or use the stylename property on a Canvas or Panel etc. Thanks
