• Drupal 7: Unable to find the wrapper "public"

  Can anyone help me with this major issue I have. I have downloaded my Drupal 7 site running fine on current server, but I cant run it on localhost or on the new server where I am trying to move it... It just gives me the "White Screen of Death"... and after commenting "set_error_handler" in boostrap.inc, I find out that the errors are all related to "public://" wrapper. This is how all the errors look like: Warning: is_dir() [function.is-dir]: Unable to find the wrapper "public" - did you forget to enable it when you configured PHP All these errors are coming from the following file: /includes/file.inc

• Syncing large personal school-material -git-repo with things such as casual notes? Rsync, wget and Git -- or some ready tool?

  My friend wants to store electrically her school -notes and process them fast, with backups. She has over 2GB -size repo already and growing all the time (mostly appended material i.e. more school notes, different formats, pdf, pictures and scanned, some text -files, etc). The goal of my friend is to process fast the notes. I suggested command like this here i.e. "# crontab -e @weekly wget --random-wait -e robots=off -U mozilla -mirror http://VeryLong.com". But I think plugging in Rsync somewhere could make it much better with Git. How would you help my friend to process and store the school -material under Git-version-controlling and still keep the size reasonable? • Pass Session data to a Class Library without using a bunch of constructors?

  Hi all, I've got my application here where literally every object has a lastUpdatedBy property. The information I put into here is the person's username, which is retrieved from the session("username") variable. How can I pass this data to my DAL in the class library? At first I was just passing in the value into each method, but this is ridiculous I thought, there should be no reason to do that every time a method is called. Then I thought well if I just put it in a constructor for each of the DAL related classes, that will make it even easier. However, even still on any given page, I've got a plethora of New() declarations, for which every single line I need to pass in the session username casted as a string. Is there an even still more efficient way of doing this so that I could only declare this in one place, and everything will know what it is and I can pass it to classes in a class library?

• .NET 2d library for circuit diagrams

  I want to draw and manipulate logic flow (as opposed to analog) circuit diagrams and I'm trying not to reinvent the wheel. Problems like positioning, line drawing, line crossing and connecting, path finding, rubberband lines, and drag & drop are also identical in flow charts, UML diagrams, or class diagrams so I started by viewing related topics via Google and Stack Overflow. However, the following requirements seemed to keep me from finding anything that quite fit: assuming a chip has an image with input and output stubs, the connecting lines would connect to the chip only in the exact spots of the I/O stubs the color of connecting lines are able to be set as per a chip's output Is there an existing .NET 2d graphics library that would be suitable for drawing circuit diagrams?

  I have a bunch of related constants that are not identical. What's the better way to name them? way #1 kWalkSpeed kRunSpeed kEatSpeed kDrinkSpeed Or, way #2 kSpeedWalk kSpeedRun kSpeedEat kSpeedDrink If we evaluate these based on readability understandability not bug prone with subtle errors due to using wrong variable name I think way #1 wins readability, they tie for understandability, and way #2 wins for not bug prone. I'm not sure how often it happens to others, but when variable names like this get long, then its easy to write kSpeedEatingWhenInAHurry when you really meant kSpeedEatingWhenInHome, especially when using autocomplete. Any perspectives?

• Django: Proper place to unregister ModelAdmins

  Sometimes I need to UNREGISTER some ModelAdmins from the admin site, because I don't want them to be there as they are, eg. if I'm using the Sites framework, and I dont want it to appear in the admin. It's no big deal to e.g. call admin.site.unregister(Site) to do so. In most cases I put it in admin.py of some related app that I have made, but sometimes I end up putting it in a place that hasn't much to do with the original app; another possibility would be making a "dummy app" and put it there... Does anybody know a more descent place where these calls can live?

• Looking for a wiki-style, standalone, version-control-"safe" documenation package

My team and I have found that documenting our project (a development platform w/ API) with a wiki is both useful to us and useful to the users. Due to some organizational issues, we're forced to do multi-site development without network connectivity. We've switched to a DVCS (Mercurial) and had great success with this. The wiki documentation proves to be a problem as the central site is setup with MediaWiki. The offsite people have no way to access or edit the wiki. Is there any sort of wiki-style package which doesn't not require a server/database and will be useable in a DVCS environment? Update: Should be open-source and cross-platform

• How do I extend the classpath used for 'grails run-app'

  I have the following in my Config.groovy file: grails.config.locations = [ "classpath:env.groovy" ] Now, where exactly am I supposed to place "env.groovy" such that it is available on the CLASSPATH during grails run-app? The documentation here is sorely lacking. I am able to get it to work on the pure commandline by placing "env.groovy" in $APP_HOME/etc and then running: $ grails -classpath ./etc run-app This seems a little hackish, but I can live with it... However, I am unable to get any such configuration working when I launch run-app using the Grails eclipse plugin (STS): Unable to load specified config location classpath:env.groovy : class path resource [env.groovy] cannot be opened because it does not exist I've seen related posts here, here, here, and here but the answers have been unfulfilling. I am looking for a CLASSPATH-based solution that will work with 'run-app' in development mode (both commandline and from eclipse). I know how to set up the CLASSPATH for my deployment servlet container, so that is not an issue.

• How can I implement "real time" messaging on Google AppEngine?

  I'm creating a web application on Google AppEngine where I want the user to be notified a quickly as possible after certain events occour. The problem is similar to say a chat server in that I need something happening on one connection (someone is writing a message in a chat room) to propagate to a number of other connections (other people in that chat room gets the message). To get speedy updates from the server to the client I'm planning on using long polling with XmlHttpRequest, hoping that AppEngine won't interfere other than possibly restriing the timeout. The real problem however is efficient notification between connections on AppEngine. Is there any support for this type of cross connection notification on AppEngine that does not involve busy-waiting? The only tools I can think of to do this at all is either using the data storage (slow) or memcache (unreliable), and none of them would let me avoid busy-waiting. Note: I know about XMPP support on AppEngine. It's related, but I want a browser based solution, sending messages to the users by XMPP is not an option.

I work on OS X - right now I am using ~/Development/ as the root folder, and I have many types of projects. For example, I have my iPhone apps under ~/Development/Xcode I develop in many languages, from PHP, to Ruby, to Python, to Objective-C. So, for example, I might have a couple of open-source apps based on PHP where I am using the Zend framework. Some of these projects are for clients, others are tests/experiments when learning a new language or general experimenting. I am really interested in how other developers have organized code/projects and could pass along some advice to make it very easy to navigate through code/projects related to many languages and types of projects.

• How to find thousands of company names?

  How can I find or generate thousands of company names for testing and demo purposes? (Address, phone number, and related information would be nice too.) I've got a system I'm building which includes business contact information. Pretty common no doubt. My test/demo database currently has randomly generated individual's names loaded (thanks to a handy IRS spreadsheet I found). This has worked great for internal testing and review purposes, but it looks really odd when shown to prospective customers. I've tried various online public information sources (e.g. EDGAR, and county based property records searches), but these all require me to manually stitch together the results in blocks of 50 names or so at a time. I could do this, but was really hoping for a search service or data store out there that had this type of information readily searchable and retrievable in very large batches.

• Retrieve text from external HTML/asp page with JavaScript

  Hi, I am using an external asp page (On the company's server - not related to me beside the fact that I'm using it for my job). The asp page has one query in it, I'm writing something in it and it gives me some information. In the information there is a certain line with constant header (let's assume 'HEADER'), I want to build an HTA that pulls the line that contains 'HEADER' to my HTA and display only this line. I think that this isn't possible without any server interaction, but I'm asking anyway. Can someone think of a way doing it? Thanks, Rotem

• How does Play recognize a particular websocket message?

  I am looking at the websocket-chat example. It unveils much, but I still cannot get something. I understand how messages are received, processed and sent on the web page side. However, Play captures websocket messages by means of the receive method of an Akka actor. In the websocket-chat, there are several cases in this method, but I don't get, how does it know which websocket message should be mapped to which case. In fact, I don't understand the path that a websocket message follows upon entering Play's domain, how is it processed and how can different message types/kinds be sent from the webpage. I have not find any info or sources related to this. Could please someone explain this or point to some kind of a good reference? UPDATE: The link to the original example.

  Hi all, My question pretty much says it all: I'm looking for a way to display Amazon Marketplace listings based on an item lookup. Example: If I do a call to ItemLookup with an ASIN of 0590353403 (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone), I'm looking for a result set of perhaps the top ten new or used Marketplace listings, preferably with seller information attached. I apologize if this is clearly documented somewhere, but I have been looking all through the Amazon API docs and on Google to no avail. • Validation for selected row in JSF h:datatable

  Hi all, I am having a tough time trying to find a solution to the following design related to h:dataTable. I have certain number of rows predisplayed. The first column is only checkboxes. The rest of the columns are disabled by default. On selecting a checkbox the elements in the corresponding rows get enabled. On submit of the for the values in the enabled row have to be validated on the server side. I am able to validate for invalid inputs but am not finding a method to use required="true" conditionally. Or any other method. Could anyone please help me on this. Thanks Barun

  I am a long time agile advocated but one of the things that bothers me about Agile is that a lot of agile practitioners, especially the younger ones, have thrown out or are missing a whole lot of good (non Scrum, non XP) practices. Alistair Cockburn's style of writing Use Cases springs to mind; orthogonal arrays (pairwise testing) is another. I hope this is an okay forum to ask this, but since I read mostly Agile related books and articles and work with mostly Agile folk ... is there anything I'm missing? Thanks for all your help. • How can I collapse a dataframe by some variables, taking mean across others

  I need to summarize a data frame by some variables, ignoring the others. This is sometimes referred to as collapsing. E.g. if I have a dataframe like this: Widget Type Energy egg 1 20 egg 2 30 jap 3 50 jap 1 60 Then collapsing by Widget, with Energy the dependent variable, Energy~Widget, would yield Widget Energy egg 25 jap 55 In Excel the closest functionality might be "Pivot tables" and I've worked out how to do it in python (http://alexholcombe.wordpress.com/2009/01/26/summarizing-data-by-combinations-of-variables-with-python/), and here's an example with R using doBy library to do something very related (http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg02643.html), but is there an easy way to do the above? And even better is there anything built into the ggplot2 library to create plots that collapse across some variables?

• ASP MVC: Keeping track of logged in users.

  I'm creating a ASP MVC application. And because of the complex authorization i'm trying to build my own login system. (So i'm not using asp membership providers, and related classes). Now i'm able to create new accounts in the database with hashed passwords. But how do i keep track that a user is logged in. Is generating a long random number and putting this with the userID in the database and cookie enough? Sorry for my rather bad english! Ty in advance :)

  Hi! I need to retrieve the name, email and picture from a google account. I am already using the openid to make the user login with it's google acc. Can I have the picture URL from the openid proccess? with OAuth I cant'seem to find the right scope to retrieve this information... See this link: http://code.google.com/apis/gdata/docs/directory.html there is a list of scopes that you can fetch with REST api to google and I didnt't see the one related to the profile. Btw, I am using PHP and the openid is already working, but didn't start with the oauth untill I know if I can(and need) retrieve the picture (because email and name already comes within the openid proccess) thanks, Joe

• Are self-described / auto-descriptive services loosely or tightly coupled in a SOA architecture ?

  I consider a self-described / auto-descriptive service as a good thing in a SOA architecture, since (almost) everything you know to call the service is present in the service contract (such a WSDL). Sample of a non self-described service for me is Facebook Query Language (FQL http://wiki.developers.facebook.com/index.php/FQL), or any web service exchanging XML flow in a one String parameter for then parsing XML and performing treatments. Last ones seem further more technically decoupled, since technically you can switch implementations without technical impact on the caller, handling compatibility between implementations/versions at a business level. On the other side, having no strong interface (diluted into the service and its version), make the service tightly coupled to the existing implementation (more difficulty to interchange the service and to ensure perfect compatibility). • cross domain gwt ?

  is there a way to run gwt on a proxy loaded web page ? ex) using proxy script on myexamplesite.com that loads finance.google.com, and running GWT on the newly loaded page. I've been doing the above before I found about GWT, using LAMP stack + Jquery (UI), which quickly turned out to be crap and inefficient. All this trouble to bypass browser's default Single Origin Policy. So, right now, is it possible to overcome this problem with GWT ? Is it possible to some how, run javascript on a html page from finance.google.com loaded into myexamplesite.com's frame with GWT or other solution? I am not looking to do JSON or RSS related topics. What I need is high lighted in bold. Is GWT + Gears what I should be using ? Thank you.

• Experiences with OpenLaszlo?

  In a related question, I asked about Web Development. I came across something called OpenLaszlo yesterday and thought it looked interesting for doing some website development. The site has a bunch of good information on it and they've got some nice tutorials and such, but being a total novice (as far as web development goes), I'm wondering whether anyone here would recommend this. As I stated in my other question, this is a new world for me and there are a lot of directions I could go. Can you compare/contrast this and other web development you've done?   Let's say you have two kinds, Message and Contact, related by a db.ListProperty of keys on Message. A user creates a message, adds some contacts as recipients, and emails the message. Later, the user deletes one of the contact entities that was a recipient of the message. Our application should delete the appropriate Contact entity, but we want to preserve the original recipient list for the message that was sent for the user's records. In essence, we want a snapshot of the message entity at the time it was sent. If we naively delete the contact entity, though, we lose snapshot integrity; if not, we are left with an invalid key. • Manage dirty rect efficiently

  Hi all, I am implementing a view system and I want to keep track of all the dirty rects. It seems my dirty rect management is a bottleneck for the whole system. On one hand, invalidating the bounding box of the dirty region seems to be an easy approach. But in the situation like this: Say I have a client area of 100x100; I have a dirty rect with (0, 0, 1, 1) and another dirty rect with (99, 99, 1, 1). Invalidating the bounding box which turns out to be 100x100 is not efficient at all. So I want to ask if someone can give any hint or give me a link of the related literatures. Thanks in advance!
