• Manage dirty rect efficiently

  Hi all, I am implementing a view system and I want to keep track of all the dirty rects. It seems my dirty rect management is a bottleneck for the whole system. On one hand, invalidating the bounding box of the dirty region seems to be an easy approach. But in the situation like this: Say I have a client area of 100x100; I have a dirty rect with (0, 0, 1, 1) and another dirty rect with (99, 99, 1, 1). Invalidating the bounding box which turns out to be 100x100 is not efficient at all. So I want to ask if someone can give any hint or give me a link of the related literatures. Thanks in advance!

• 100+ tables to joined

  Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone ever had a change to measure how a would 100 joined tables perform? Each table would have an ID column with primary index and all table are 1:1 related. It is a common problem within many data entry applications where we need to collect 1000+ data points. One solution would be to have one big table with 1000+ columns and the alternative would be to split them into multiple tables and join them when it is necessary. So perhaps more real question would be how 30 tables (30 columns each) would behave with multitable join. 500K-1M rows should be the expected size of the tables. Cheers

• jQuery version of YAHOO.lang (isUndefined, isNull, isString etc.)

  Does anyone know of a jQuery plugin that has 'helpers' or extensions like those found in the YAHOO.lang namespace? I have in mind functions such as: isNull isDefined isString isFunction I would also appreciate the same kind of thing for strings and arrays, such as Contains, StartsWith (I know these are easy to write, I'm just looking for a plugin that encompasses them all). It's not in the YAHOO.lang namespace but also form related extensions- determining a radiobox's value (from the one checked), a form element's type in a friendly name. Specifically a plugin with fluent API rather than selector based such as $("input[@type=radio][@checked]") Again I'm aware they're easy to implement but I don't want to reinvent the wheel.

• I'm getting reports that my app is draining the battery, but only on HTC Incredible.

  Has anyone else noticed behavior specific to the HTC Incredible that might result in an app keeping the device awake and busy? I've received reports that my app is responsible for keeping the device awake and draining the battery, but only from HTC Incredible users. My app responds to a number of Intents that might be related. It has a service that starts on boot, and it also responds to changes in network connectivity. I do use a WakeLock, but I'm careful to release it when I'm done processing, and the WakeLock times out after a couple minutes whether I'm done or not. I've heard that the Incredible may have some connectivity problems, or that some of them do. Could it be that the network is going up and down frequently, triggering my app? Any other ideas? I've asked a user to send me their logs with aLogCat. If they're willing, that may help narrow down the cause.

  Yesterday I stumbled over the information that Crystal Reports will no longer be included in Visual Studio 2010. Instead – it will be provided as a free download, but with a separate installation and a separate release date. According to the linked information the release of CR will be later than that of VS. My projects depend in parts on CR and I want to shift early to VS 2010. So there are some related questions: Can I use VS 2010 with the older 2008 version of CR? Do I need a workstation with a preinstalled VS 2008 or is the installation of the CR redistribution package sufficient to run that? Are there any experiences with the VS Beta concerning that?

• Solution for distributing MANY simple network tasks?

  I would like to create some sort of a distributed setup for running a ton of small/simple REST web queries in a production environment. For each 5-10 related queries which are executed from a node, I will generate a very small amount of derived data, which will need to be stored in a standard relational database (such as PostgreSQL). What platforms are built for this type of problem set? The nature, data sizes, and quantities seem to contradict the mindset of Hadoop. There are also more grid based architectures such as Condor and Sun Grid Engine, which I have seen mentioned. I'm not sure if these platforms have any recovery from errors though (checking if a job succeeds). What I would really like is a FIFO type queue that I could add jobs to, with the end result of my database getting updated. Any suggestions on the best tool for the job?

• loading Data in VBA from a text file

  I am not very familiar with VBA but need to use it for a new software program I am using (not Microsoft related) I have a text file that has columns of data I would like to read into VBA. Specifically the text file has 4 entries per row. Thus I would like to load in the column vectors (N by 1). The text file is separated by a space between each entry. So for example I want to load in column one and save it as array A, then column two and save as array B, then column three and save as array C, and then column four and save as array D. This code snippet found below from http://www.tek-tips.com/faqs.cfm?fid=482 is something I found that can load in text to an array, but I need to adapt it to be able to save the columns as different arrays as specified above... • Best way to handle MySQL date for performance with thousands of users

  I am currently part of a team designing a site that will potentially have thousands of users who will be doing a number of date related searches. During the design phase we have been trying to determine which makes more sense for performance optimization. Should we store the datetime field as a mysql datetime. Or should be break it up into a number of fields (year, month, day, hour, minute, ...) The question is with a large data set and a potentially large set of users, would we gain performance wise breaking the datetime into multiple fields and saving on relying on mysql date functions? Or is mysql already optimized for this?

• IIS Not working

  I have a web site that built on Visual studio 2008 and i need to run it from my computer (Win 7 Ultimate) as a server I tried to publish it to IIS and this is simply not working and i have the flowing error : Error Summary HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. Config Error This configuration section cannot be used at this path. This happens when the section is locked at a parent level. Locking is either by default (overrideModeDefault="Deny"), or set explicitly by a location tag with overrideMode="Deny" or the legacy allowOverride="false". any one can help?

• UITextField showing trash instead of characters

  There's quite a strange thing happening to text fields in application I'm developing (see image below).  [1]: http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/1449/zrzutekranu20100506godz.png At some point in the application I'm using    - (void) viewWillAppear:(BOOL)animated { [super viewWillAppear:animated]; [[(TextFieldView*)[self view] usernameTextField] becomeFirstResponder];    } Which results in the above image. If it's called in viewDidAppear - everything is fine. The funny thing about this error is that it breaks ALL text fields throught the application. Has anyone ever encountered such an error? Might it be related to openGL use?

• IE 6&7 Hanging When Opening New Window

  I've got a real interesting situation. I have an existing web app that runs on a number of desktops fine. On a few desktops I see the following behavior: Upon clicking a link that opens up a new window (to another URL in the same domain) the IE window freezes and IE needs to be killed. This happens on IE 6 & 7. When using Fiddler I see NO traffic when clicking the link. When using IE HttpAnalyzer I see a request register but no response. If I change the MaxConnectionsPerServer registry setting to a higher value, e.g. 10 the problem goes away. Looking at netstat I dont see any abnormal connections. So I'm totally confused, the issue seems to be on the client side and seems to be related to IE not being able to make an additional socket connection to the server, but netstat doesn't show that. Ideas?

  I'm currently writing an in house coding challenge web application and I am wondering if there is any other security precaution I would need to have other than below java option at runtime. java -Djava.security.manager=default Basically, challenges would be more of single threaded math and algorithm focused. So I would need to enable basic data structure objects and disable any file, sockets, threading or any thing that might be not so important. Based on my quick search turning on security manager as above seems to be a solution but since this is a security related I would like to be sure before it goes alive. Is there anything else I could do more?

  Any easy way to read all the columns in Matlab? my format is date time y1 y2 y3 y4 ......................... 4/27/2010 00:3:09 34 45 45 56 ................ so on currently i am reading these with the code [c,pathc]=uigetfile({'*.txt'},'Select the data','C:\Data'); file=[pathc c]; data= dlmread(file, ',', 1,3); so needless to say i am skipping the time stamps. Was wondering if there is aeasy way to read the time stamps and plot my other colums agianst the time in hours. my files are 43200 X 30 and some are 86400 X 90 Related question : is the format same for .csv and .xls files , i mean except ofcourse xlsread

• Ensuring Updated CSS/JavaScript on Client Side

  I'm trying to ensure that visitors of my ASP.NET MVC website always have the most-current CSS and Javascript (and not some older cached version). I tried to realize this by generating a seed value when the application domain starts, and automatically append it to the CSS and Javascript URLs (so now instead of /Content/All.js the link is /Content/All.js?549238 etc.). Unfortunately I just found out by debugging via Firebug that this causes now a full download request every time (the new "seeded" response is no longer cached at all, but I only wanted the first check to download the 'updated' version, but then cache again/only check if there is a difference). How can I achieve my goal, is there a better way of doing this? I need the client to always request the newest version, but then cache if no change happened. Edit: This appears to be related to the fact that my page is served over SSL. I asked a follow up question here regarding enabling clientside caching with SSL.

  How do YOU debug a Scala program? I mean YOU as in the person posting the Answer :) Please answer only from personal experience, not from stuff you've heard or read on the Internet. You should not believe everything you read on the Internet, especially tales of complex open-source software configurations that actually work :-) The are many Java tools which claim to support Scala in some way or another, but I have so far struck out in trying to get any one of them to actually let me set a breakpoint in Scala code and step through it. These are big, major open-source IDEs I'm talking about here. The main problem in getting a debugger to work seems to be the "version hell" with fast-changing IDEs, Plug-Ins, JDKs, and the Scala language itself. Hence, the more detailed re-statement of the question is appropriate: What is the exact version number of the IDE, Plug-In, JDK, Scala, and even Operating System, that you are successfully using?   Sorry for bad English :( Suppose i can preliminary organize recipes and ingredients data in any way. How can i effectively conduct search of recipes by user-provided ingredients, preferably sorted by max match - so, first going recipes that use maximum of provided ingridients and do not contain any other ingrs, after them recipes that uses less of provided set and still not any other ingrs, after them recipes with minimum additional requirements and so on? All i can think about is represent recipe ingridients like bitmasks, and compare required bitmask with all recipes, but it is obviously a bad way to go. And related things like Levenstein distance i don't see how to use here. I believe it should be quite common task...

  Hello, I have a question related to correct handling of returns of the DAO library I'm writing for one project. This library probably is going to be used by another people and I want to do it correctly. So I would like to know, how I should deal with return statements of the functions of my DAO. Example 1 I have function to getCustomer which should return String. In case query doesn't return any result should I return null, empty string or throw some kind of Exception? Example 2 I have function getCutomerList which return ArrayList. In case query doesn't return any result should I return null, empty ArrayList or throw some Exception? Example 3 Some sql exception was detected, what should I do: throw exception or do try..catch of the block where it can occur? What is the "good" practice or "best" practice to apply in my case?   hi, I'm having a problem with custom formatters in Drupal. I'm using a custom formatter on a CCK file file with the following content: but when I select it to use I get an internal server error: PHP has encountered an Access Violation at 16B357F9 Please note: 1) It sometimes worked, but the page becomes soon unavailable after a while 2) I've tried to replace the custom formatter content with a simple Hello and I get the error anyway, so it should not be related to the content. 3) I'm using another custom formatter with another CCK field and it doesn't give any error.   I am trying to add an entity to the DB. Once I have added it, I want to detach it, so I can manipulate the object safely without making any changes to the DB. After calling context.SaveChanges() I do the following to detach the entity: // save context.Stories.Add(story); // attach tags. They already exists in the database foreach(var tag in story.Tags) context.Entry(tag).State = System.Data.EntityState.Unchanged; context.SaveChanges(); context.Entry(story).State = System.Data.EntityState.Detached; However, changing the entity state to DETACHED will remove all related entities associated with the my entity. Is there a way to stop this ? If I don't detach the entity, all my changes are sent to the DB next time I call context.SaveChanges() Thanks!!

  Ok, i saw some other posts about this sort of thing, but not exactly related. This is not what I want to do, but need to do unfortunately. We have in this order right now Prototype 1.6 jQuery 1.2.6 with noConflict on jQuery with j I need to add jQuery 1.4.2 in that mix as well. It will always be the last one loaded. No option.   I have 30 categories in mysql. I have 450 subcategories which are related to the 30 categories in another table. Categories table id _ title _ Keywords 1 _ Animals _ animal, animals, pet, parrot 2 _ Books _ books, book, educational n _ xxx _ xxx Subcategories table id _ ref _ title _ keywords 1 _ 1 _ cats _ cats, persian cat, bengal cat 2 _ 1 _ dogs _ dogs, labrador, golder retriver 3 _ 2 _ Classic _ The davinci code, books, book, classical books I need to implement the filter to a textfield. If the users enters labrador in the textfield then show the categories or/and subcategories which contain 'labrador' in the keywords. In this case the "dogs" subcategory would appear! I know that this has been done using jquery. But is there anyway to implement this with angularJs? If you got a jsfiddle then it would be awesome! :) Thank you

  I want to learn C++ so that i can develop C++ Python modules for server-related stuff. I'm a purely dynamic languages developer (Python, PHP, Ruby, etc). I want to learn a fast language, and if I'm going to do this, I'd rather learn a really fast language like C++. Before I even get started though, I understand that suddenly working with static types, a different syntax, and compiling code will be quite the paradigm shift. Is there any advice that a C++ dev who also has dynamic languages experience can give me to me to help me make that shift faster?

  There is now a competition for creating a T-shirt design for useR2010. Someone proposed the idea to use R for creating the T-shirt image. Which leads me to my questions: What type of images do you think might be fitting for this? How would you suggest to use R to create the images ? Would anyone here want to have a go at it? (p.s: I understand this is not a pure "programming" question. Yet it involves R programming, the understanding of R aesthetics, and some caring for the R community. I also understand I am at the risk of annoying people here with this question, so in case that happens - I deeply apologies!
