• Design Code Outside of an IDE (C#)?

  Does anyone design code outside of an IDE? I think that code design is great and all but the only place I find myself actually design code (besides in my head) is in the IDE itself. I generally think about it a little before hand but when I go to type it out, it is always in the IDE; no UML or anything like that. Now I think having UML of your code is really good because you are able to see a lot more of the code on one screen however the issue I have is that once I type it in UML, I then have to type the actual code and that is just a big duplicate for me. For those who work with C# and design code outside of Visual Studio (or at least outside Visual Studio's text editor), what tools do you use? Do those tools allow you to convert your design to actual skeleton code? It is also possible to convert code to the design (when you update the code and need an updated UML diagram or whatnot)?

  Hello! I'd like a little bit of assistance here. I am trying to send a request to a .NET SOAP server from PHP with Zend. I have the WSDL file but it does not contain any header information. Though I have tried to add a custom header this does not seem to work and the worst is that the WSDL file itself does not seem to be "right"..... • How to use a different assembly name for different configurations?

  In Visual Studio 2008 (and others) when creating a .NET or silverlight application if you look at your project properties, it seems like you can only have one assembly name - across all configurations. I would like to compile my application as: MyAppDebug - in debug mode and just MyApp - in release mode Does anyone know if this is possible? Edit: It seems some people are questioning the reasoning behind the question, so I'll explain a little further: I'm working on a Silverlight application which gets automatically uploaded to our test site when I to a "build solution". The trouble is, the test team are now testing the online version, whilst I work on a new one. So, I want to have a url like .\MyApp.html for the regular version that the QA team will test and then .\MyApp.html?version=debug for the current version that I'm working on.

• Activator.CreateInstance(string) and Activator.CreateInstance<T>() difference

  No, this is not a question about generics. I have a Factory pattern with several classes with internal constructors (I don't want them being instantiated if not through the factory). My problem is that CreateInstance fails with a "No parameterless constructor defined for this object" error unless I pass "true" on the non-public parameter. Example // Fails Activator.CreateInstance(type); // Works Activator.CreateInstance(type, true); I wanted to make the factory generic to make it a little simpler, like this: public class GenericFactory<T> where T : MyAbstractType { public static T GetInstance() { return Activator.CreateInstance<T>(); } } However, I was unable to find how to pass that "true" parameter for it to accept non-public constructors (internal). Did I miss something or it isn't possible?

• Managing multiple WCF endpoints for the same service

  I am building an single application that uses WCF to call out to multiple external endpoints. All of the remote endpoints are identical except for the URI. I would like to treat them as a pool: add and remove endpoints through configuration and have the application understand what to do. My original plan was to define one endoint in the app.config, then iterate over my list of endpoints and update client.Endpoint.Address on the fly to point to the right place. Unfortunately, that property is read-only, rendering that plan unworkable. I'm a little bit stumped here. Any suggestions on how I might accomplish this?

  I'm just getting started with OOP PHP via PHP Object-Oriented Solutions and am a little curious about the notion of protection in OOP. The author clearly explains how protection works, but the bit about not wanting others to be able to change properties falls a bit flat. I'm having a hard time imagining a situation where it is ever possible to prevent others from altering your classes, since they could just open up your class.php and manually tweak whatever they pleased seeing as how PHP is always in plaintext. Caution: all of the above written by a beginner with a beginner's understanding of programming...

• Need to work out database structure

  Hi, Just need a little kickstart with this. I have Mysql/PHP, and I have 5,000 products. I have 30 companies I need to store some data for those 30 companies for each product as follows: a) prices b) stock qty I also need to store data historically on a daily basis. So the table... It makes sense that the records will be the products because there's 5000, and if I put the companies as the columns, I can store the prices, but what about the stock quantities? I could create two columns for each compoany, one for prices, one for qty. Then make the tablename the date for that day...so theer would be a new table for every day with 5000 products in it? is this the correct way? Some idea on how I'll be retreiving data the top 5 lowest prices (and the company) by product for a certain date the price and stock changes in the past 7 days by product

• What is the correct way to unit test areas around exceptions

  Hi, Looking at our code coverage of our unit tests we're quite high. But the last few % is tricky because a lot of them are catching things like database exceptions - which in normal circumstances just dont happen. For example the code prevents fields being too long etc, so the only possible database exceptions are if the DB is broken/down, or if the schema is changed under our feet. So is the only way to Mock the objects such that the exception can be thrown? That seems a little bit pointless. Perhaps it's better to just accept not getting 100% code coverage? Thanks, Dan

  Is it recommended to count in small loops (where possible) down from length - 1 to zero instead of counting up to length - 1? 1.) Counting down for (int i = a.length - 1; i >= 0; i--) { if (a[i] == key) return i; } 2.) Counting up for (int i = 0; i < a.length; i++) { if (a[i] == key) return i; } The first one is slightly faster that the second one (because comparing to zero is faster) but is a little more error-prone in my opinion. Besides, the first one could maybe not be optimized by future improvements of the JVM. Any ideas on that?

• How do I create a solr core with the data from an existing one?

  Solr 1.4 Enterprise Search Server recommends doing large updates on a copy of the core, and then swapping it in for the main core. I am following these steps: Create prep core: http://localhost:8983/solr/admin/cores?action=CREATE&name=prep&instanceDir=main Perform index update, then commit/optimize on prep core. Swap main and prep core: http://localhost:8983/solr/admin/cores?action=SWAP&core=main&other=prep Unload prep core: http://localhost:8983/solr/admin/cores?action=UNLOAD&core=prep The problem I am having is, the core created in step 1 doesn't have any data in it. If I am going to do a full index of everything and the kitchen sink, that would be fine, but if I just want to update a (large) subset of the documents - that's obviously not going to work. (I could merge the cores, but part of what I'm trying to do is get rid of any deleted documents without trying to make a list of them.) Is there some flag to the CREATE action that I'm missing? The Solr Wiki page for CoreAdmin is a little sparse on details.

  I've used Page Scroller Lite http://pagescroller.com to set up a single-page site at http://www.thestitchshop.co.uk There seems to be an issue that scolling works only once when clicking on a menu item. It will only work again after one touched scrolls the page 'manually' by sliding the finger across the page. Apparently, the issue is that the content gets the focus after the scroll and tapping on navigation then actually taps behind it. I've tried contacting the author of pagecroller, but no luck. So, how do I fix it? I don't have any JS knowledge, so I need a little more help along the way. Many thanks.   I come from a web developer background, so I'm fairly familiar with PHP and JavaScript, but I'd eventually like to branch out into other languages.   Hi Folks, I'm complaining about the growth of jQuery tagged questions at stackoverflow. There are so many people who ask, 'How to implement a specific plugin?' or 'How to use that plugin?' which makes me kinda sick. IMO: If you Tag a question to jQuery, javascript or C, it should be a question about the language itself and not some 'goofy' little plugin. Best case scenario, Tag those questions with jquery-plugins. • Word on HTML document point, using UIWebView, DOM and Javascript

  Hey guys, How can I figure out which word is at the point where the user tapped on a UIWebView? I am able to detect the CGPoint for the tap (subclassing UIWindow like this), and I can actually get the DOM element on that point using javascript. But I know very little of javascript and DOM to figure out how can I actually get which word the user tapped on. Is that possible?   Hi, my layout's requirement is to keep all thumbnails at 80px height, not higher, not smaller. In my model I set the style to :thumb= "500x80", so basically almost every picture which is not too wide gets its perfect miniature with 80px height. Sometimes, however, my pictures are narrow and high, so the thumb can have unclickable dimensions of like 5x80. So I dont want to crop pictures as long as thumbnails are not getting crazy narrow, but I think I can make a little sacrifice and crop them if thumb's width is getting smaller than 25px. So my questions is - is it possible in paperclip to set minimal proportions of a picture by which the style will be "500x80" and beyond that it will turn to sth like "25x80#"?

  I'm done some Googling, and I've found nothing. I'm scoping out writing a plugin for an editor I use, and I am wondering whether there is a way I can access the PHP documentation via an API? For instance, I'd like to get raw access to the information (besides the comments) located here: http://php.net/file_exists. php.net seemingly uses MediaWiki which provides an API. The tutorial provides the example URL, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=login&format=xml. This does not work for php.net, however (http://php.net/w/api.php?action=login&format=xml). I'm just looking for a little information on how to interface with the PHP documentation.

  So I have what is essentially a spreadsheet in TIFF format. There is some uniformity to it...for example, all the column widths are the same. I want to de-limit this sheet by those known-column widths and basically create lots of little graphic files, one for each cell, and run OCR on them and store it into a database. The problem is that the horizontal lines are not all the same height, so I need to use some kind of graphics library command to check if every pixel across is the same color (i.e. black). And if so, then I know I've reached the height-delimiter for a cell. How would I go about doing that? (I'm using RMagick)

  I have a many-to-many relationship between two entities; Item and Tag. I'm trying to create a predicate to take the selectedItem and return a ranking of items based on how many similar tags they have. So far I've tried: NSPredicate *predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"SUBQUERY(itemToTag, $item, $item in %@).@count > 0", selectedItem.itemToTag]; Any other iterations that have failed. It currently only returns the selectedItem in the list. I've found little on Subquery. Is there a guru out there that can help me refine this? Thanks in advance for the help!

• How many address fields would you use for a UK database?

  Address records are probably used in most database, but I've seen a number of slightly different sets of fields used to store them. The number of fields seems to vary from 3-7, and sometimes all fields are simple labelled address1..addressN, other times given specific meaning (town, city, etc). This is UK specific, though I'm open to comments about the rest of the world too. Here you need the first line of the address (actually just the number) and the post code to identify the address - everything else is mostly an added bonus. I'm currently favouring: Address 1 Address 2 Address 3 Town County Post Code We could add Country if we ever needed it (unlikely). What do you think? Is this too little, too much?

  lastly I've been feeling like jquery is slowly becoming the defacto standard in js libraries I might be wrong!) or at least that is more active than the rest of the frameworks... for example I've been looking for a fine open source calendar like componente and found http://fullcalendar.vinsol.com/ we've been using prototype for very little things, like its selector capabilities ($ function as a shortcut for document.getElementById, mainly), executing some piece of js when the page is loaded and to issue some very simple ajax calls. so I guess the migration should be quite straight forward, but I'd like to know the pros / cons of migrating to prototype... on the other hand, I guess that having both of them together is not a good choice, specially taking into account that the migration should be quite simple... am I right? saludos sas
