• Creating PDF Invoices - Are there any templating solutions?

  Our company is looking to integrate invoices into a new system we are developing. We require some a solution to create a layout of the invoice and then convert to pdf. We have considered just laying out the invoice in html/css then converting to pdf. We have also considered using SVG-PDf conversion. Both of these solutions integrate well into our existing templating language used for our web application. Historically we have been a Microsoft based business and used Crystal Reports for such a task but we are looking an open source Linux solution for this project. Does any one have any suggestions of an approach or technology we could use for such a task?

• Solutions for redundant server and client code?

  In our system, the code which exists on the client side (in Flash and Javascript) mirrors the code that exists on the server side (e.g. in Python or PHP), normally with respect to the models, the methods available for those models, and the unit tests written for them. This becomes a problem in systems where you want to minimize data transfer (e.g. multiplayer games). I do not want to write the same code and unit tests redundantly for both the client and server, but I don't know of any standard solutions to deal with this. Basically, I want a language/compiler which can produce models and methods for three main languages: Actionscript, Javascript, and any server language. Does something like this exist?

• Cost-effective .Net solutions for report generation in Excel and PDF

  I'm looking for some cost-effective solutions and/or open source options for generating reports in Excel and PDF format. I realize some of the open source options may have less in terms of functionality and flexibility than the COTS versions with all the bells and whistles, but are there any options out there that fall somewhere in between? EDIT: Essentially what I'll have are just some basic HTML reports of data in tables with some calculations/summary data but nothing fancy like graphs, etc. I'll then need the ability to export these HTML reports to Excel and/or PDF.

• Old solutions being recalled in VisualStudio

  I have an odd scenario that I can't figure out, and would appreciate any advice offered. I'm running VisualStudio 2010 pro. I have a web application solution with 6 projects. On one occasion I opened up some files from a number of backup solutions to look at some historic code. I viewed them and closed the files. I did this with my current project open. I may have rebuilt the solution with them open but I'm not sure. I recently did a 'find', searching the whole solution, and noticed that the files from the backups are referenced as being part of the solution. How do I remove them?

• Lines-of-code counting for many C# solutions

  I am currently researching a solution for counting lines of code in C#. I pretty much need a combination of the following two tools: http://richnewman.wordpress.com/2007/07/01/c-and-vbnet-line-count-utility/ http://www.locmetrics.com/index.html My problem is that I need to recursively scan a folder containing a lot of visual studio solutions. So can't really use the first tool without any major work on its code, as it's only able to scan a single solution at a time. But I also need to split the results for each solution, preferably even the contained projects. This disqualifies the second tool I found. I also found NDepend which suffers from the same problem. Do you know of any free tools that do what I need? I am unable to find anything suitable.

• Looking for Team Development type Software like SVN

  I am in need of a software that is PHP-Based, or similar that can be installed on my server that doesn't offer SVN Perks. It should be somewhat similar to an SVN, however, since the server doesn't support SVN, we'll need another means of doing sort of the same thing. We have a team of Developers and need to accomplish progress in the same way that an SVN does, but without that type of server support. Is there any software that could be installed via webhosting that would be somewhat, if not exactly, similar to an SVN? Please help, Thanks :) P.S. - This is related to development AFAIK, but not exactly code-related.

My main question is, what's the recommended approach for managing dependencies to commercial libraries that are not available in the Maven repos? How can I manage the dependency of these commercial libraries on the open source libraries that they use and are available in Maven repos? Also, are there any other recommendations and advices that I should know or implement to make the setup as efficient, effective, and smooth as possible? Thanks in advance.

• unable to retract Sharepoint solutions

  Hi all: I am having trouble retracting solutions in SharePoint 2007. I used both the retract solution button and the stsadm command in command line. The timer job was created in both instances, but it never gets run... it just sits in the timer job definition. The Status of the target just said "Retracting (scheduled at m/dd/yyyy MM:SS AM/PM)". I've waited for a long time and nothing happens. Has anyone experienced this before, and does anyone have a solution to this problem? Thanks.

How do you handle having multiple projects running at once in the scrum model? Most of the time we have a main projects and some small ones. How do you combine multiple sprints efficiently? • TFS 2008 ignores team project check-in settings

  I'm trying to set up our TFS 2008 instance to require that projects build before they can be checked in. I have created a check-in policy using the out of the box "Builds" policy, but I'm still able to check broken projects in after mangling the code and attempting to build the project. We're a small shop, and TFS was originally set up with our team's Active Directory group listed as TFS admins. Is this the problem? Do check-in policies apply to TFS admins? Any other suggestions?

• Code reviews for larger ASP.NET MVC team using TFS

  I'm trying to find a good code review workflow for my team. Most questions similar to this on SO revolve around using shelved changes for the review, however I'm curious about how this works for people with larger teams. We usually have 2-3 people working a story (UI person, Domain/Repository person, sometimes DB person). I've recommended the shelf idea but we're all concerned about how to manage that with multiple people working the same feature. How could you share a shelf between multiple programmers at that point? We worry it would be clunky and we might easily have unintended consequences moving to this workflow. Of course moving to shelfs for each feature avoids having 10 or so checkins per feature (as developers need to share code) making seeing the diffs at code review time painful. Has anyone else been able to successfully deal with this? Are there any tools out there people have found useful aside from shelfs in TFS (preferably open-source)?

  I am just beginning to develop for Android. The tutorial book I am using uses the code below, but, put simply, it does not work. As I've searched for an answer, I find that none of the solutions people say have rid them of this error have worked for me. Here is a list of methods that did not work. -Cleaning: It just said it couldn't clean until I resolved the error. -Building the Project: It built it, but the error did not go away. -Deleting import R: The error did not go away. -Renaming import R to import me.package.R: The error persisted. • PHP-friendly NoSQL solutions

  I'm looking to use a NoSQL solution for my next project, which will be written in PHP. What choices do I have in terms of NoSQL solutions that can easily interfaced via PHP? I haven't done much thinking about the architecture yet, so I'm not sure what my needs will be; I'd simply like to know what my choices are so I don't build something I can't reasonably implement. For instance, I know Cassandra has Pandra, but that's just a PHP library. MongoDB has a native PECL extension.

To complete the work fast we have created a macro that has been updated on all the machines. This macro corrects the font, size and formatting. How can I ensure and implement that nobody can change/replace or delete this macro from their system? In case this happens I should get an alert. Known Issues/Limitations Customizing the generated report by changing the template, adding comments, including attachments etc… is not supported While opening a test plan summary document in  Office 2007, if you get the warning: “The file Test Plan Summary cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents” (with Details: ‘The file is corrupt and cannot be opened’), click ‘OK’. Then, click ‘Yes’ to recover the contents of the document. This will then open the document in Office 2007. The same problem is not found in Office 2010. Generated documents are stored by default in the “My documents” folder. The output path of the generated report cannot be modified. Exporting word documents for individual test suites or test cases in a test plan is not supported. JMS Module A JMS module is a definition which contains JMS resources such as queues and topics. A JMS module is required in order to create a JMS queue. Subdeployment JMS modules are targeted to one or more WLS instances or a cluster. Resources within a JMS module, such as queues and topics are also targeted to a JMS server or WLS server instances. A subdeployment is a grouping of targets. It is also known as advanced targeting. Connection Factory A connection factory is a resource that enables JMS clients to create connections to JMS destinations. JMS Queue A JMS queue (as opposed to a JMS topic) is a point-to-point destination type. A message is written to a specific queue or received from a specific queue. The objects used in this example are: Object Name Type JNDI Name TestJMSServer JMS Server TestJMSModule JMS Module TestSubDeployment Subdeployment TestConnectionFactory Connection Factory jms/TestConnectionFactory TestJMSQueue JMS Queue jms/TestJMSQueue 2. Configuration Steps The following steps are done in the WebLogic Server Console, beginning with the left-hand navigation menu. 2.1 Create a JMS Server Services > Messaging > JMS Servers Select New Name: TestJMSServer Persistent Store: (none) Target: soa_server1  (or choose an available server) Finish The JMS server should now be visible in the list with Health OK. 2.2 Create a JMS Module Services > Messaging > JMS Modules Select New Name: TestJMSModule Leave the other options empty Targets: soa_server1  (or choose the same one as the JMS server)Press Next Leave “Would you like to add resources to this JMS system module” unchecked and  press Finish . 2.3 Create a SubDeployment A subdeployment is not necessary for the JMS queue to work, but it allows you to easily target subcomponents of the JMS module to a single target or group of targets. We will use the subdeployment in this example to target the following connection factory and JMS queue to the JMS server we created earlier. Services > Messaging > JMS Modules Select TestJMSModule Select the Subdeployments  tab and New Subdeployment Name: TestSubdeployment Press Next Here you can select the target(s) for the subdeployment. You can choose either Servers (i.e. WebLogic managed servers, such as the soa_server1) or JMS Servers such as the JMS Server created earlier. As the purpose of our subdeployment in this example is to target a specific JMS server, we will choose the JMS Server option. Select the TestJMSServer created earlier Press Finish 2.4  Create a Connection Factory Services > Messaging > JMS Modules Select TestJMSModule  and press New Select Connection Factory  and Next Name: TestConnectionFactory JNDI Name: jms/TestConnectionFactory Leave the other values at default On the Targets page, select the Advanced Targeting  button and select TestSubdeployment Press Finish The connection factory should be listed on the following page with TestSubdeployment and TestJMSServer as the target. 2.5 Create a JMS Queue Services > Messaging > JMS Modules Select TestJMSModule  and press New Select Queue and Next Name: TestJMSQueueJNDI Name: jms/TestJMSQueueTemplate: NonePress Next Subdeployments: TestSubdeployment Finish The TestJMSQueue should be listed on the following page with TestSubdeployment and TestJMSServer. I hope to have more tips, best practices - but here is a quick thing that people seem to trip up on..."How to Run OWSM related WLST commands" The most common issue people seem to run into is trying to run the OWSM WLST commands from the wrong location. You need to run the WLST commands from "oracle_common/common/bin/wlst.sh" (ex: /home/Oracle/Middleware/oracle_common/common/bin/wlst.sh) This is documented in the OWSM doc (Security And Administrator's Guide) under the section "Accessing the Web Services Custom WLST Commands". Note: This location is different from the location from where you run the SOA WLST commands. If you try to run the OWSM WLST command from the wrong location - you will see errors like the following: "The MBean ,@ oracle.wsm:*,name=WSMDocumentManager,type=Repository was not found"
