• ListSelector applies to the entire list

  I have a simple list with a listselector like so. <ListView android:id="@+id/list" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_below="@+id/round" android:listSelector="#99000000" android:clickable="true" android:cacheColorHint="#00000000" android:background="#00000000"> </ListView> As you can see android:listSelector="#99000000" but the "black alpha" color is applied to the entire list, not the selected item. • CSS:Hover's problem with text that is hidden because of overflow:hidden ?

  In my application i have lots of divs containing text. All divs have overflow set to hidden so that the user does not see the text if the container is not large enough to contain the writing. If the user wants to see the hidden text they are supposed to mouse over the "box". The box then expands and shows the text. Sounds simple enough, right? Well i am having problems and the solution i tried did not work. The problem is that when the user mouses over the box, the text does indeed appears but stays really narrow and comes out of the bottom box, the sameway it would if overflow was set to visible. below is the standard css applied to the div box: .newevent { overflow: hidden; z-index: 0; } I Tried to fix this by setting a hover trigger, when it is activated the box widens, i thought that this would then mean there would be more space to display the text, below is the hover effect: .newevent div:hover { width: 200px; padding: 50px; background-color:#D4D4D4; border: medium red dashed; overflow: visible; z-index: 1; } How do i go about "redrawing" the text when it is hovered over, so that the text can use the new widened area rather than behaving as it is still in a narrow box.

• Why is my view controllers view not quadratic?

  I created an UIViewController subclass, and figured out that the default implementation of -loadView in UIViewController will ignore my frame size settings in a strange way. To simplify it and to make sure it's really not the fault of my code, I did a clean test with a plain instance of UIViewController directly, rather than making a subclass. The result is the same. I try to make an exactly quadratic view of 320 x 320, but the view appears like 320 x 200. iPhone OS 3.0, please check this out: UIViewController *ts = [[UIViewController alloc] initWithNibName:nil bundle:nil]; ts.view.frame = CGRectMake(0.0f, 0.0f, 320.0f, 320.0f); ts.view.backgroundColor = [UIColor cyanColor]; [self.view addSubview:ts.view]; like you can see, I do this: 1) Create a UIViewController instance 2) Set the frame of the view to a quadratic dimension of 320 x 320 3) Give it a color, so I can see it 4) Added it as a subview. Now the part, that's even more strange: When I make my own implementation of -loadView, i.e. if I put this code in there like this: - (void)loadView { UIView *v = [[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0.0f, 0.0f, 320.0f, 320.0f)]; v.backgroundColor = [UIColor cyanColor]; self.view = v; [v release]; } then it looks right. Now lets think about that: In the first example, I do pretty much exactly the same, just that I let UIViewController create the view on it's own, and then take it over in order to change it's frame. Right? So why do I get this strange error? Right now I see no other way of messing around like that to correct this wrong behavior. I did not activate anything like clipsToBounds and there's no other code touching this.

• How to play sound automatically when scrolling to the next page?

  I'm using Page Control example from Apple. I want to be able to scroll horizontally to certain page and get the sound automatically play when viewing that page? And then sound stop when viewing the other page? So, for example. On page 1, i have some texts. When i go to the next page which is on page 2, i want sound to be automatically play and stop when i go to page 3. I'm planning to use If statements (since it's not that many pages) to determine which page will get the sound. My question is simple. How do you get the sound play automatically when viewing certain page? By the way, I'm planning to use System Sound. I know how to play the sound using button. But how do you get it automatically - start when certain page appear and stop when moving to the next page. Thank you in advance! • Using "margin: 0 auto;" in Internet Explorer 8

  I'm in the process of doing some advance IE8 testing, and it seems that the old technique of using "margin: 0 auto;" doesn't work in all cases in IE8. The following piece of HTML gives a centered button in FF3, Opera, Safari, Chrome, IE7, and IE8 compat, but NOT in IE8 standard: <div style="height: 500px; width: 500px; background-color: Yellow;"> <input type="submit" style="display: block; margin: 0 auto;" /> </div> (As a work-around I can add an explicit width to the button). So the question is: which browsers are correct? Or is this one of those cases where the behaviour is undefined? (My thinking is that all the browsers are incorrect - shouldn't the button be 100% width if it's "display: block"?) UPDATE: I'm being a dunce. Since input isn't a block-level element, I should have just contained it within a div with "text-align: center". Having said that, for curiosity's sake, I'd still like to know whether the button should or shouldn't be centered in the example above. FOR THE BOUNTY: I know I'm doing odd things in the example, and as I point out in the update, I should have just aligned it center. For the bounty, I'd like references to the specs that answer: If I set "display: block", should the button be width 100%? Or is this undefined? Since the display is block, should "margin: 0 auto;" center the button, or not, or undefined?

• Is there a concise way to map a string to an enum in Objective-C?

  I have a string I want to parse and return an equivalent enum. I need to use the enum type elsewhere, and I think I like how I'm defining the class. • What is a good use case for static import of methods?

  Just got a review comment that my static import of the method was not a good idea. The static import was of a method from a DA class, which has mostly static methods. So in middle of the business logic I had a da activity that apparently seemed to belong to the current class: import static some.package.DA.*; class BusinessObject { void someMethod() { .... save(this); } } The reviewer was not keen that I change the code and I didn't but I do kind of agree with him. One reason given for not static-importing was it was confusing where the method was defined, it wasn't in the current class and not in any superclass so it too some time to identify its definition (the web based review system does not have clickable links like IDE :-) I don't really think this matters, static-imports are still quite new and soon we will all get used to locating them. But the other reason, the one I agree with, is that an unqualified method call seems to belong to current object and should not jump contexts. But if it really did belong, it would make sense to extend that super class. So, when does it make sense to static import methods? When have you done it? Did/do you like the way the unqualified calls look? EDIT: The popular opinion seems to be that static-import methods if nobody is going to confuse them as methods of the current class. For example methods from java.lang.Math and java.awt.Color. But if abs and getAlpha are not ambiguous I don't see why readEmployee is. As in lot of programming choices, I think this too is a personal preference thing. Thanks for your response guys, I am closing the question.

• Conditional WHERE Clauses in SQL Server 2008

  Hello, I am trying to execute a query on a table in my SQL Server 2008 database. I have a stored procedure that uses five int parameters. Currently, my parameters are defined as follows: @memberType int, @color int, @preference int, @groupNumber int, @departmentNumber int This procedure will be passed -1 or higher for each parameter. A value of -1 means that the WHERE clause should not consider that parameter in the join/clause. If the value of the parameter is greater than -1, I need to consider the value in my WHERE clause. I would prefer to NOT use an IF-ELSE statement because it seems sloppy for this case. I saw this question here. However, it did not work for me. I think the reason why is because each of the columns in my table can have a NULL value. Someone pointed this scenario out in the fifth answer. That appears to be happening to me. Is there a slick approach to my question? Or do I just need to brute force it (I hope not :(). Thank you!

• Search Box/Transition won't work in Firefox

  I disabled the search box on IE, because IE kept centering it over the navigation. It works in Chrome, I'm not sure about opera (and I'm not sure if I care) but it won't work in Firefox. The ease-out timing works in Firefox, but nothing else really works. I've tried other things to work around the issue, but every time I try something different, the search box's positioning gets thrown off. If you look at it in Firefox, it looks fine-- until you click on it to search. http://kissoff.weebly.com/ You can see what the search box is supposed to do if you look at it and click on it in Chrome. • View Source and Chrome Developer Tools showing different output

  I have a page located here. Viewing it in Chrome and Firefox show a really small h1 title, and also it changes color as if it is a link. The template that generates everything looks exactly how it should be. When diagnosing the issue, the relevant section of code looks like this when I go to view source: <div class="page-heading"> <h1>Title Here</h1> </div> However, when I go to view it in Chrome's Developer tools, it is throwing in extraneous malformed anchor tags, which is obviously causing the hovering behavior. This is what it looks like to the dev tools: <div class="page-heading"> <h1> <a style="font-family: arial; font-size: 9px" <="" a="">Title Here</a> </h1> </div> In addition, when viewing a local copy of the site, the output shown in the dev tools is the same as viewing the source and they both render correctly locally. Oddly enough, all version of IE render it correctly. The current version of both Chrome and Firefox both render it weirdly. Initially I thought it may be a user agent stylesheet problem, but if anything the CSS is fine, it's the HTML that is malformed.

• Child elements changing opacity with parent Image

  I have a <div> element which has a background image. On top of that I have some text that is hidden but when the user hovers over the <div> element that text will show and the <div> opacity will lower. My problem is when you hover over the div all elements inside that change opacity as well. I have looked through stackoverflow to see if anyone has the same problem but all i found were answers that had RGBA using background colors (not images). • Best way to implement some type of ITaggable interface

  I've got a program I'm creating that reports on another certain programs backup xml files. I've gotten to the point where I need to implement some type of ITaggable interface - but am unsure how to go about it code wise. My idea is that each item (BackupClient, BackupVersion, and BackupFile) should implement an ITaggable interface for highlighting old, out of date, or non-existent files in their HTML or Excel report. The user will be able to specify tags in the settings. My question is this, how can a user dynamically specify a "tag" such as File Date 3 days old? - Background Color = Red. Actually I guess my question is more, how can I, the programmer, implement this dynamically? I was thinking Expression trees, but am unsure this is the way to go as I havn't studied them much. I know my ITaggable interface would have methods such as AddTag(T tag), RemoveTag(T tag), but what exactly specifies the criteria for the tag to be added? I realize this may be subjective, and can be marked as wiki if need be, but I truly am stuck. Any input would be greatly helpful!

  I set up the SimpleModal plugin to work from our Ad server(Real 24/7). Essentially, attempting to make an interstitial ad. • GIT: head has dissapeared, want to merge it into master.

  The top image is the output of: git reflog. The bottom is what GITK in GIT GUI (msysgit) shows me when I look at all branch history. The last few commits do not show on GIT GUI. Why do they not show on GITK (at least as a branch or something)? How do I merge them into master? I gather this happened when I checked out tag 0.42. Why is that not the same as master? (I had tagged the master in its latest state) When I click push, why does the remote repo claim to be up to date.. shouldn't it try to update these commits into whatever branch they are in? The first of the questions is important - I would like to begin to understand what GIT is thinking. It's more oracle than logic at this point. If it makes a difference to see the earlier history, the project is a [pretty powerful] JS color picker that can be viewed here in its entirety.

• Margin-Top push outer div down

  Hello, I have a header div as the first element in my wrapper div, but when I add a top margin to a h1 inside the header div it pushes the entire header div down. I realize this happens whenever I apply a top margin to the first visible element on a page. Here is a sample of the css. • using same ids for many tags?
