  • PDF form submission

    I have a PDF form (made in Acrobat) that has button to submit via HTTP. What I want to do it have a PHP script that will take the PDF form and e-mail it to me via attachment. What I don't want: --PDF Submit via e-mail button. This requires webmail users to save the pdf and attach it, and is just too confusing for most users. I want one-click and done. --Submit via mailto:[email protected]. Does the same thing as above. If there's a pdf on the server, I know how to use PHP's mail() function to e-mail it to someone. What I don't know how to do is process the PDF once someone hits Submit within the PDF. Does that make sense? Thanks, Jeff

  • Duplicate content in ASP.NET MVC because of custom routes MapRoute(), are areas the rescue?

    I use custom routes for my URLs and my action become accessible via two URLs (not counting trailing slash and lower\upper case letters): one via my custom route /my-custom-route-url/ and one via default /controller/action. I see one possible solution -- put all controllers which use default routing (they are mostly backend) in one area, and place all others in separate area and use it without default route. May be there is a better way?

  • Creating Wizard in ASP.NET MVC (Part 2)

    In Part 1 of this article series you developed a wizard in an ASP.NET MVC application. Although the wizard developed in Part 1 works as expected it has one shortcoming. It causes full page postback whenever you click on Previous or Next button. This behavior may not pose much problem if a wizard has only a few steps. However, if a wizard has many steps and each step accepts many entries then full page postback can deteriorate the user experience. To overcome this shortcoming you can add Ajax to the wizard so that only the form is posted to the server.   • Performance surprise with "as" and nullable types

    I'm just revising chapter 4 of C# in Depth which deals with nullable types, and I'm adding a section about using the "as" operator, which allows you to write: object o = ...; int? x = o as int?; if (x.HasValue) { ... // Use x.Value in here } I thought this was really neat, and that it could improve performance over the C# 1 equivalent, using "is" followed by a cast - after all, this way we only need to ask for dynamic type checking once, and then a simple value check. This appears not to be the case, however. I've included a sample test app below, which basically sums all the integers within an object array - but the array contains a lot of null references and string references as well as boxed integers. The benchmark measures the code you'd have to use in C# 1, the code using the "as" operator, and just for kicks a LINQ solution. To my astonishment, the C# 1 code is 20 times faster in this case - and even the LINQ code (which I'd have expected to be slower, given the iterators involved) beats the "as" code. Is the .NET implementation of isinst for nullable types just really slow? Is it the additional unbox.any that causes the problem? Is there another explanation for this? At the moment it feels like I'm going to have to include a warning against using this in performance sensitive situations...   • Showing schema.org aggregate rating in Google rich snippets

    After adding schema.org microdata markup for reviews and aggregate ratings, I expected review and rating information to show up in rich snippets. Unfortunately, neither are being shown. Google's Structured Data Testing Tool finds the microdata, and there're no errors or warnings on the page. Any idea what's wrong with the microdata markup?   • Cannot control the fan on a Sony Vaio laptop

    I've got Sony Vaio laptop and my fan is on all the time, though the temperature on the video-adapter is always over 60°?. As I've googled, vaiofand does not support VPC-EA series. Is there anything I can do with that or I need another laptop? I'm using the following graphics card: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Manhattan [Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series] though the problem is not with the graphics card. I've mentioned its temperature as the highest (64°C now btw). Seems like the notebook is always overheated and I cannot control the fan speed to make it cooler. And yes, I'm using the proprietary driver ATI/AMD FGLRX graphics driver. I'm using Kubuntu 11.04.

  • Using Subversion in Xcode

    It seems that all of the initial Google results for "using subversion with xcode" are actually just tutorials for installing and configuring svn and Xcode, as opposed to actually using the two (i.e. interacting with svn via Xcode's GUI). Is anyone aware of a good guide that teaches the tricks and pitfalls of working with svn via Xcode's GUI? Something that bridges the gap between the most excellent Version Control with Subversion book and the Xcode IDE (as in pure Xcode GUI without any terminal command use)? Edit: We all love our terminal commands, and we all love Eclipse but (and I mean this in the nicest possible way) neither is really the point of the question. I’d prefer to use svn via Xcode’s IDE instead of via terminal just as I prefer (well, for this case) to code in Xcode’s IDE instead of using vim and gcc. Apple engineers spent a good bit of time implementing that SCM menu in Xcode; someone has to have seen a usage guide somewhere.

    My brother has come up with an interesting business idea that could be commercialised. For over a month I have been creating the foundation for SaaS. I have been treating this as commercial project so designing using patterns and best practices. One of the reasons I want to include this in my Resume is my full time job doesn't involve current trendy ASP.Net technologies (e.g Linq/Entity Relationships, jQuery, ASP.Net MVC 3, Silverlight, etc) so the resume lacks impact. In my full time job I work on a 7 year old well designed product and since our data and web layers work well it would be stupid to re-engineer them only because recruiters think Linq, ASP.Net MVC and jQuery are cool. How can I include my personal project in Resume so that it doesn't sound like experiment or quick'n'dirty pet project? Many thanks.

  • Comparing Checksums

    This is something trivial, yet got me to think for a little. I had two checksums, one received from a client invoking a service, another one calculated once data sent into service is received. Checksums are plain arrays of bytes. I wanted to have comparison to be expressed as simple as possible. Quick google search brought me to a post that dealt with the same issue. But linq expression was too chatty and I think the solution was a bit muddy. So I looked a bit more into linq options presented in the post, and this is what ended up using: var matching = original_checksum.SequenceEqual(new_checksum); Sometimes things are so simple, we tend to overcomplicate them.

  • Working with Reporting Services Filters – Part 3: The TOP and BOTTOM Operators

    Thus far in this series, I have described using the IN operator and the LIKE operator. Today, I’ll continue the series by reviewing the TOP and BOTTOM operators. Today, I happened to be working on an example of using the TOP N operator and was not successful on my first try because the behavior is just a bit different than we find when using an “equals” comparison as I described in my first post in this series. In my example, I wanted to display a list of the top 5 resellers in the United States for AdventureWorks, but I wanted it based on a filter. I started with a hard-coded filter like this: Expression Data Type Operator Value [ResellerSalesAmount] Float Top N 5 And received the following error: A filter value in the filter for tablix 'Tablix1' specifies a data type that is not supported by the 'TopN' operator. Verify that the data type for each filter value is Integer. Well, that puzzled me. Did I really have to convert ResellerSalesAmount to an integer to use the Top N operator? Just for kicks, I switched to the Top % operator like this: Expression Data Type Operator Value [ResellerSalesAmount] Float Top % 50 This time, I got exactly the results I expected – I had a total of 10 records in my dataset results, so 50% of that should yield 5 rows in my tablix. So thinking about the problem with Top N some  more, I switched the Value to an expression, like this: Expression Data Type Operator Value [ResellerSalesAmount] Float Top N =5 And it worked! So the value for Top N or Top % must reflect a number to plug into the calculation, such as Top 5 or Top 50%, and the expression is the basis for determining what’s in that group. In other words, Reporting Services will sort the rows by the expression – ResellerSalesAmount in this case – in descending order, and then filter out everything except the topmost rows based on the operator you specify. The curious thing is that, if you’re going to hard-code the value, you must enter the value for Top N with an equal sign in front of the integer, but you can omit the equal sign when entering a hard-coded value for Top %. This experience is why working with Reporting Services filters is not always intuitive! When you use a report parameter to set the value, you won’t have this problem. Just be sure that the data type of the report parameter is set to Integer. Jessica Moss has an example of using a Top N filter in a tablix which you can view here. Working with Bottom N and Bottom % works similarly. You just provide a number for N or for the percentage and Reporting Services works from the bottom up to determine which rows are kept and which are excluded.
