• Correcting color-shifted mirrored i915 driver in 12.04?

  I was called in to fix a friend's malfunctioning HP Pavilion. She's not sure exactly which model, but the sticker on the bottom says "G60". The problem was a failed upgrade to 12.04. I was able to mostly repair it with sudo apt-get -f install, which ran setup and configuration for several hundred packages. The biggest problem at the moment is Xorg. The login screen (lightdm) loads normally but at a reduced resolution (1024x768 instead of 1366x768). But once you log in, it looks like this: Observe that the colors of the dock on the left and the bar at the top are normal. But the background is filled with bizarro color-skewed ghost images of the desktop. In all cases, the actual contents of any programs you run is a totally illegible mess, except that the bar at the top of any program windows looks and acts normally. And the ghost images are interactive! For example, if you click the icon in the top right corner to get the "shut down" menu, the same menu will appear in the ghost images below. Starting a terminal will start a terminal window in both the real desktop and the ghost images, and moving it around updates both the real and ghost desktops. I suspect Xorg is using some kind of wrong driver and/or parameter for the graphics hardware. I would ordinarily check xorg.conf to see what it says, but that apparently doesn't exist any more, and my googling has not yielded any useful techniques for getting Xorg to tell me what settings it decided to use. The weird part is that it works fine on the login screen. It's only when you actually log in as a user that the display gets screwed up. Suggestions?

• Cool Tools You Can Use: Validation Templates for PeopleSoft Contracts Processes

  This is the first in a series of postings we’ll be making under the heading of Cool Tools You Can Use. Our PeopleSoft product management team identified the need for this series after reflecting on the many conversations we have each year with our PeopleSoft community members. During these conversations, we were discovering that customers and implementation partners were often not aware that solutions exist to the problems they were trying to address and that the solutions were readily available at no additional charge. Thus, the Cool Tools You Can Use series will describe the business challenge we’ve heard, the PeopleSoft solution to the challenge, and how you can learn more about the solution so that everyone can be sure to make full use of what PeopleSoft applications have to offer. The first cool tool we’ll look at is the Validation Template for PeopleSoft Contracts Process Requests, which was first released in December 2013 as part of PeopleSoft Contracts 9.2 Update Image 4. The business issue our customers highlighted to us is the need to tightly control but easily configure and manage the scope of data that any user can process when initiating a process. Control of each user’s span of impact is essential to reducing billing reconciliation issues, passing span of authority audits, and reducing (or even eliminating) the frequency of unexpected process results.  Setting Up the Validation Template for a PeopleSoft Contracts Process With the validation template, organizations can easily and quickly ensure the software restricts the scope of transactions a user can affect and gives organizations the confidence to know that business processes are being governed effectively. Additionally, this control of PeopleSoft Contracts process requests can be applied and easily maintained and adjusted from a web browser thereby enabling analysts to administer the rules without having to engage software developers to customize the software. During the field validation template setup, an analyst specifies the combinations of fields that must contain values when a user tries to setup a run control and initiate a PeopleSoft Contracts process from a process request page. For example, for the Process Limits component, an organization could require that users enter a valid combination of values for the business unit, contract, and contract type fields or a value in the contract administrator field. Until the user enters a valid combination of entries on the process request page, he cannot launch the process. With the validation template activated for process request pages, organizations can be confident that PeopleSoft Contracts users will not accidentally begin generating invoices or triggering other revenue management processes for transactions beyond their scope of authority. Since that post, Rachna Agarwal from MSIT in India updated the RDL files that are ready to go in a single ZIP. The reports assume that they will ne uploaded to the Report Manager’s root folder and use a shared data source named MDW. The reports also integrate with the new Query Hash Statistics reports. • No sound while playing multi-media in Ubuntu 12.04 for XPS15

  I have an XPS15 laptop, core i5, 8GB ram. Whenever I login my laptop I here the startup bongo sound. But my sound system just doesn't play anything, may it be a short audio clip or a movie. • Inexpensive ways to add seek to a filetype object

  PdfFileReader reads the content from a pdf file to create an object. I am querying the pdf from a cdn via urllib.urlopen(), this provides me a file like object, which has no seek. PdfFileReader, however uses seek. What is the simple way to create a PdfFileReader object from a pdf downloaded via url. Now, what can I do to avoid writing to disk and reading it again via file(). Thanks in advance.

• Lenovo IdeaPad P400 - Disabling the annoying requirement for the Fn key to use F1-F12

  On Lenovo laptops, in order to use F5 you need to press Fn-F5 (same with F1-F12). It's really annoying and I'd like to reverse the situation. On Windows, a Lenovo driver could help: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/Disable-Fn-Keys-E420/td-p/803609 How can I resolve this on Ubuntu 12.04? I couldn't find Lenovo drivers for Linux. UPDATE: Found a peculiar solution for this on Windows. • Alternatives to Project Euler for improving Excel ability

  I've recently been enjoying using the mathematical problems listed at Project Euler to learn Python. My Excel ability is better than my Python, but I think I'd still benefit from the sort of inductive learning that comes with solving a series of increasingly difficult puzzles using a particular tool. I know Project Euler can be completed using Excel, but are there any other puzzle series similar to this or The Python Challenge specifically tailored for people trying to increase their knowledge of Excel and what it can do? NB. I'm not looking for a "tutorial", I know there are plenty of these. And apologies if this isn't completely appropriate for programmers.SE.com - some of the folks at SuperUser suggested it was a better fit here than there!

• Is There a Real Advantage to Generic Repository?

  Was reading through some articles on the advantages of creating Generic Repositories for a new app (example). But given the slow uptake of Linq on other data access technologies outside of Entity Framework, what advantage does this provide over working directly with the DbContext? I attempted to write a PetaPoco version of the Repository, but PetaPoco doesn't support Linq Expressions, which makes creating a generic IRepository interface pretty much useless unless you only use it for the basic GetAll, GetById, Add, Update, Delete, and Save methods and utilize it as a base class. Then you have to create specific repositories with specialized methods to handle all the "where" clauses that I could previously pass in as a predicate. Is the Generic Repository pattern useful for anything outside of Entity Framework? If not, why would someone use it at all instead of working directly with Entity Framework? • Lubuntu wireless issue with Broadcom chipset

  I'm a web dev that just started a new venture in buying wiped laptops in bulk and selling them at a low cost to lower income families that want a laptop that will simply preform and not become virus ridden and require constant maintenance, so naturally I opted for a linux distro and after some research, lubuntu was my top pick. I'm not a stranger to linux as all of my servers for my web dev business are linux, but I am however new to L/Ubuntu and I'm having some issues with both wifi (broadcom chipsets) on the 20 or so dells that I have right now, D800's, D810's and E5400's. Not sure if you can point me in a solid direction, I've scoured (and implemented) the suggestions on ask ubuntu and still coming up short. • First Windows Phone 7 &ndash; Mobile LOB App.

  So I spent a couple of hours yesterday building my first Windows 7 Phone Series. application.   I still can’t get used to saying Windows 7 Phone Series.   So I think I’ll just go with WP7.   I must say I’m really impressed.    Calling web-services a breeze laying out User Interface a very straight forward.   I had made called into Dynamics NAV using web-services in under 10 minutes. Working in XAML takes a bit of getting used to,  I’m not trying to-do anything too clever yet. One thing I will point out to transition from one XAML page to the next use this.NavigationService.Navigate(new Uri("/Primary.xaml", UriKind.Relative)); Going from Compact Framework this is equivalent of a Window.Show Its so nice to be able to talk nicely again, about Windows Based Mobile Development!

• How can I connect my HP Photosmart C3100 printer in 10.04 (regression from 9.x)

  My printer was working under 9.x. It is a an HP Photosmart C3100 series. When I open Admin-Printing no local printers are found. I try to add via Other (My local choices are Serial and other). I have tried many url's - ipp://localhost:631/ipp, http://localhost/ipp, localhost, 127.0.0.1, etc... None have worked. Under the networked I have tried JetDirect, using localhost and 127.0.0.1 and port 631. I have tried many options under IPP with different variants in the host trying to verify a printer. No luck .I tried LPD/LPR with localhost and tried the probe. no luck. I tried the cups admin via localhost:631 and that didn't work. On the old version its simply found the local printer, I might have picked the driver, I can't remember but it was the photosmart c3100 series that was working.I just can't get 10.04 to print.

• Portable Device Path on Windows

  Hey guys I actually got an Windows/Java Question. I've got an plugged in Device which I want to access via Java. Normaly u can access an e.g. USB-Stick via the Drive letter... but this Tablet is displayed by Windows as an "Portable Device"... which means, that the Path is sth. like "Computer\Archos 5S" and there is no Drive letter. I want to access a File on this Device via Java, but I am not able to figure out the correct Path to it. There is a similar Question out there, but without a productive answear. Or is there an other way to access this Device via Java? thanks in advance ripei

• ls output changing when used through exec()

  I'm using the ls command via PHP and exec() and I get a different output than when I run the same command via the shell. When running ls through PHP the year and month of the date get changed into the month name: Running the command through the shell: $ ls -lh /path/to/file -rw-r--r-- 1 sysadmin sysadmin 36M 2011-05-18 13:25 file Running the command via PHP: <?php exec("ls -lh /path/to/file", $output); print_r($output); /* Array ( [0] => -rw-r--r-- 1 sysadmin sysadmin 36M May 18 13:25 file ) */ Please note that: -the issue doesn't occur when I run the PHP script via the cli (it only occurs when run through apache) -I checked the source code of the page to make sure that what I was seeing was what I was getting (and I do get the month name instead of the proper date) -I also run the ls command through the shell as the www-data user to see if ls was giving different output depending on the user (the output is the always the same from the shell, that is I get the date in yyyy-mm-dd instead of the month name)

• Q&amp;A: Will my favourite ORM Foo work with SQL Azure?

  short answer: Quite probably, as SQL Azure is very similar to SQL Server longer answer: Object Relational Mappers (ORMs) that work with SQL Server are likely but not guaranteed to work with SQL Azure. The differences between the RDBMS versions are small – but may cause problems, for example in tools used to create the mapping between objects and tables or in generated SQL from the ORM which expects “certain things” :-) More specifically: ADO.NET Entity Framework / LINQ to Entities can be used with SQL Azure, but the Visual Studio designer does not currently work. You will need to point the designer at a version of your database running of SQL Server to create the mapping, then change the connection details to run against SQL Azure. LINQ to SQL has similar issues to ADO.NET Entity Framework above NHibernate can be used against SQL Azure DevExpress XPO supports SQL Azure from version 9.3 DataObjects.Net supports SQL Azure Open Access from Telerik works “seamlessly”  - their words not mine :-) The list above is by no means comprehensive – please leave a comment with details of other ORMs that work (or do not work) with SQL Azure.   The Commandos series of games and its similar western counterpart, Desperados, use a mix of 2D and 3D elements to achieve a very pleasing and immersive atmosphere. Apart from the concept that alone made the series a best-seller, the graphics eye-candy was also a much appreciated asset of that game. I was very curious on what was the technique used to model and adorn the realistic terrains in those titles? Below are some screenshots that could be relevant as a reference for whomever has a candidate answer: The tiny details and patternless distribution of ornamental textures make me think that these terrains were not generated using a standard heightmap-blendmap method.
