• Dell Dimension 2400 problem

  I have a new problem with a Dell Dimension 2400 PC. Until yesterday or the day before, it was working fine, but today when I press the power button the light on the power button turns yellow instead of green, the fan behind the processor increases speed until it sounds like a jet engine, and the computer does not boot up. I cleaned out the dust in the computer so that is not the problem. Also, the fan was blowing cold air. Do any of you know what might be causing this and how I might be able to fix it?

• Ports do not open after rules appended in iptables

  I have a server that I am trying to setup for OpenVPN. I have followed all the steps, but I see that when I try to connect to it in Windows, it doesn't allow me, it just hangs on connecting, so I did a nmap scan and I see that port 1194 is not open so naturally I append the rule to open 1194 with: iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 1194 -j ACCEPT followed by service iptables save and service iptables restart which all executed successfully. Then I try again, but it doesn't work and another nmap scan says that port 1194 is closed.   I've noticed that some Western Digital hard drives are now sporting 4K sectors, that is, the sectors are larger: 4096 bytes vs. the actual de facto standard of 512 bytes. So: What's the big deal with 4K sectors? Is it marketing hype, or a real advantage? Why should somebody building a new PC care, or not, about 4K sectors? Why is this transition taking place now? Why didn't it happen sooner? Are there things to look out for when buying a 4K sector hard drive? e.g. incompatibility? Anything else we should know about 4K sectors?

• Stuck in power saving mode

  I've got an LG monitor I tried attaching to my laptop for dual monitor goodness and it worked fine but when I tried attaching it back to the desktop it stuck in "Power Saving mode" and wouldn't go away. The CPU's starting up but nothing happens with the monitor. I try attaching it back to the laptop and it works fine again. I don't understand what could have happened. For reference, the laptop I'm using is an HP laptop with nVidia GT240M video card running on an i7 processor while the desktop runs on a Dual Core processor with an nVidia 9400GT video card. I've never had problems like these with other monitors I've attached my pc to. Anyone got any ideas?

• Wireless is not currently enabled

  I have a HP Pavilion TX2000 tablet PC with me with windows 7 OS running on it. I used to access the Internet using my D-Link DIR 615 wireless adapter on the tablet and it used to work quite fine until one day, when I hibernated my Windows 7, the wireless went off and the problem seems to persist even after my hard efforts to clear it. I checked if the router works fine, and yes it did as my iPod was still catching wireless signals on the other hand, when I checked mu device manager, I realized that I now had no wireless driver. I checked on HP's website for one, but ironically even they didn't have wireless drivers meant for my tablet for Windows 7. Please help me find a solution to this problem. • Block a URL at browser level

  Does anyone have a solution (that doesn't involve editing the hosts file) to block a particular URL from FireFox? Basic back story is that I'm trying to discipline myself. I'm spending FAR too much time over at Server Fault that I want to genuinely block the site from my work PC so that every time I find myself flicking to it during work time I can't see it, but I'd like to be able to disable it during my lunch break. (So I only spend 40 minutes a day there, rather than 4 hours). That said I don't want to block it at the router, nor for anyone else.

• What are the pros and cons of AWS Elastic Beanstalk compared with other deployment strategies?

  I'm pretty new to the whole Netflix OSS stack and deployments in general. As a background for my current level of knowledge ops-wise, my main role is as a front-end application engineer. However, I enjoy the operations side of things, so I'm attempting to setup a new deployment strategy and the tooling for a new project. Our Goals Super easy deploys (we want to push a button to update production) Automated deploys to test environments (using Jenkins) Ease of maintenance (we have an app to write, don't want to spend our time fiddling with production issues) Ability to handle a service oriented architecture (many small apps, various languages and data stores) Enough flexibility to ensure we won't have to change strategies any time soon (we're already trying to get away from RightScale) We're OK with a little more initial setup time if doing so will save us some headaches in the future. So, along these lines, I've been listening to podcasts, watching Ops talks, and reading tons of blog posts and based on our goals and what I've taken to be some forming best practices, we've started forming a plan using Asgard, rolling our package into a jar and rolling that into an AMI. We had this all planned out and like the advantages the process versus using a Chef server and converging instances on the fly (we felt this was error prone given our limited timeline and lack of understanding around a Chef server workflow). However, a coworker did a little looking around on his own and felt like Elastic Beanstalk met our needs. I've looked into it and spun up a test environment with a WAR file and an attached RDS database. Things seem to work and I believe that we can automate deploys to a testing environment using Jenkins via the AWS API. Seems simple enough... perhaps too simple. What I'm wondering is, what's the catch? If Elastic Beanstalk is so simple and effective, why isn't it talked about more? I'm having a hard time finding enough objective opinions and facts about the two different deployment strategies, so I thought I'd ask around. Do you use Elastic Beanstalk? If so, why and what factors lead to that decision? What do you like and dislike? If you don't use Elastic Beanstalk but considered it, what do you use and why didn't you use Elastic Beanstalk? What are the advantages and disadvantages to a Elastic Beanstalk based deployment strategy for an SOA? That is, will Elastic Beanstalk work well with many small applications that rely on each other to work?

• Unable to make my bios see my sata hdd

  I know there are many question about that, but I tried everything and I'm still not able to make my bios see my sata2 hdd. I've got a QDI motherbord with no sata port; only 2 ide ports. I had an old ide hdd, now i've removed it and bought a sata2 hdd. Since my pc has no sata slots i bouth a ide-to-sata adapter. So, i don't have any os installed on the new drive, and the old drive is removed. My problem is that I'm unable to see my hdd on bios. I suppose that my bios, since it's an old version, doesn't have sata drivers, but I don't know if I must install it and also I dont know how to do it. Anyone can help me?

• dialup connection script

  I've just started working for a company who produce a specialist modem. In the test department they simulate actual use with a bunch of pc's acting as clients connecting over this modem. As such each needs to dial a set of dial-up connections. Each of these has to be created manually, and currently takes quite a while on each machine, so i was hoping to be able to automate the creation process. Back in the early days of the internet i remember getting CD's from ISP's where the dial-up connection was configured automatically, and i was wondering if anyone lknew how to do this, or if they could point me in the direction of a tutorial about it. To be clear, i don't want to automate actually dialing the connection, but i do want to run a script which creates the icons in the networking applet that allows us to dial these connection. • Windows Updates - Does Not Install, how can I remove it

  Everytime I shutdown my Windows XP, it comes up with the following screen which says Turn Off with Installing Updates (Of course, it also gives me an option as follows, "Click here to turn off without installing updates.") When I do a normal shutdown asking it to "Install Updates and Turn It Off", it doesn't actually install the updates. Each subsequent time I try to shut down the PC, it still prompts me to "Turn Off with Installing Updates". I managed to find out that the install was this: Installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706) update 1 of 1 .... When I click on the Installing Updates icon (the yellow icon, that appears on the task bar near the clock), and install it, it tries to install but fails: Why is this install alone failing? Secondly, if it's not possible to ascertain why the installation is failing, can I at least ensure that it's removed from the list of possible installs so that each time it does not ask me to install it?

• How safe is locking the screen?

  So, both windows and linux have a pretty useful feature that allows you to leave everything running on the PC while also keeping invaders away by locking the screen. My question is: Say I leave my laptop with the screen locked while I go get a donnut, and then it gets stolen. Assuming the thief has access to whatever software he needs, how easy/hard would it be for him to access my (currently logged-in) account? Now let me be clear. I'm not asking if he can access the data on the harddrive. I know he can, and that issue would go under data encryption, which is not my question here. I'm focusing on how hard would it be to get around the "Insert Password" screen, and have full access to my account. I'm looking for answers regarding both OS's; but, if needed, assume Ubuntu. • Where can I download copies of a Windows XP ISO image with Internet Explorer 6 or Internet Explorer 7 for VirtualBox?

  I have Windows 7 Professional hosting Ubuntu inside VirtualBox for my development machine. To test my site, I run Internet Explorer and hit my Ubuntu box. This works great for Internet Explorer 8, the default browser on this Windows machine. I also want to run another VM with a copy of Windows XP with Internet Explorer 6 or Internet Explorer 7. Where can I download ISO image files of old copies of Windows XP? I've looked in Internet Explorer Application Compatibility VPC Image and these only run in Virtual PC/XP Mode which won't run while VirtualBox is running. If I have to run VirtualBox (can't work without Ubuntu running the site), is there any way to test Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, and Internet Explorer 8 from the same Windows 7 machine?

  I've started getting an error on my windows machine when sending an email through Windows Mail, using Mobile Me: An unknown error has occurred. I've deleted and re-added the account, and I get the same issue. I'm able to receive email fine. Note - this issue only affects one PC - my laptop has no issues. Any suggestions on what Error 503 means, or how I would fix this?

• Wireless Network Disappearing From Available Networks (Windows 7)

  I have been using Windows 7 with a BT Voyager wireless adapter to connect to my home wireless network for around the last 6 months or so and until recently have experienced no problems. However, over the last couple of days Windows has been unable to connect to the network and the network name is no longer visible in the list of available wireless networks. The only way I have got round the problem is to reboot the NetGear router and to change the SSID to a network name which has not already been used. I do not believe the problem is with the router as my mobile phone can connect to it without any problems. The BT Voyager wireless adapter detects all other available networks so I presume this is a Windows 7 issue as it seems to occur when the PC is rebooted. This problen has happened twice in the last 2 days and is becoming extremely annoying. Does anyone have any suggestions?

• Ho do you view all your monitoring software

  In my office I have all our monitoring tools setup and working great, but I dont have an easy way to view them. I have a large TV in my office plugged into an old PC that has my nagios status page always showing. If I need to change anything on that computer I use Synergy to access the computer from my desktop. We are thinking about adding another TV and I want some suggestions on setting it all up. We are a 99.99% Windows shop. What do you use to run all the TV's in your helpdesk? Synergy works for me, but what if one of the other admins want to change the screen? Is there any easy way that any of us (currently 4 people) can change the screen from our desktops? (Remote desktop doesn't work because it locks the console which is the output to the TVs.) Any advice would help, Thanks.

• How to create iso dvd image for use with Mac OS X's "Disk Utility"?

  This seemed way easier on my pc. I would just pop a blank dvd in the drive, it asked what I wanted to do with it, to which I would respond, "burn dvd with nero" (paraphrasing), then I would pick "new" and just drag and drop the folders in there. Mac appears to have "Disk Utility" which just requires that I 'choose an image' but then doesn't bother to detail: how to do this what the options mean e.g. format "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" is that ever going to be readable on a non Mac machine? I want to create an ISO standard DVD as per the 'default' you'd get on nero. All the stuff on the web points to doing things with 'Terminal' (the whole point of buying a Mac was to get away from command line jiggery pokery - I'm trying to burn some photos not land a friggin lunar module here!) Please, if you can just provide some simple instructions on what I need to achive this I'd be extremely grateful. Ta muchley in advance.

  Hello everyone, I'm here with some Vista-trouble. After a cigarette-break I returned to my desk to find my PC with a black screen, and after failing to wake it up did a forced restart. I haven't been installing any hardware or software for quite a while. Ever since, Vista gets stuck on the animated 'Microsoft Corporation' progress bar with the animation still running and no hard disk activity. With an F8 and safe-mode + prompt I saw that the boot gets stuck at crcdisk.sys. I'm running Vista64 SP1. What could the problem be? Any advice?

• WebClient/Publisher Temporary Files in CleanMgr(Disk Cleanup)

  When I run Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe) on my work PC (running WinXP), it claims to see 778,520 K of WebClient/Publisher Temporary Files Although I do check that field, the number never drops. I've manually scanned through all possible temp folders on the drive and don't see anyplace hiding 760 MB of temp files, which makes me wonder whether those files merely exist in some list (registry or INI) somewhere but don't actually exist on the drive. So, my questions are: 1. Where on the drive might those WebClient/Publisher Temporary Files be 2. Where does cleanmgr.exe look to determine how much disk space is used by WebClient/Publisher Temporary Files Thanks in advance.

• Programs minimized for long time takes long time to "wake up"

  I'm working in Photoshop CS6 and multiple browsers a lot. I'm not using them all at once, so sometimes some applications are minimized to taskbar for hours or days. The problem is, when I try to maximize them from the taskbar - it sometimes takes longer than starting them! Especially Photoshop feels really weird for many seconds after finally showing up, it's slow, unresponsive and even sometimes totally freezes for minute or two. It's not a hardware problem as it's been like that since always on all on my PCs. Would I also notice it after upgrading my HDD to SDD and adding RAM (my main PC holds 4 GB currently)? Could guys with powerful pcs / macs tell me - does it also happen to you? I guess OSes somehow "focus" on active software and move all the resources away from the ones that run, but are not used. Is it possible to somehow set RAM / CPU / HDD priorities or something, for let's say, Photoshop, so it won't slow down after long period of inactivity?

• How to access website on localhost from internet?

  Hello, I turned my pc into router by allowing port forwarding on port 80 and got my hostname(xyz.donexist.org) registered through dyndns.com. Now i when i type my public ip address in browser i get redirected to my browser. I have installed glassfish and have my website deployed in glassfish. I want that when i type xyz.donexist.org my website should be opened. What all steps more i need to take? I have made a entry in etc/hosts file as :- 127.0.0.1 xyz.donexist.org Please guide me. I am and beginner. Thanks in advance :)

• After installing Windows Phone 8 SDK, Connectify doesn't work

  Today I installed Windows Phone 8 SDK from the official site. After installing and a couple of restarts (it restarted the PC to enable Hyper-V), I opened Connectify. I use Connectify Hotspot to connect my iPod to the internet as I have an ethernet connection and no wireless router. The problem is that now, Connectify doesn't show WiFi in Share Over. The attached screenshot shows this. Previously, before I installed the SDK, it would show Ethernet and Wi-Fi. I would select WiFi and share my internet. Now, this is completely screwed. EDIT: I found out that the Microsoft Virtual Wi-Fi Miniport Driver has got disabled and I am not able to enable it again. Please advise. Please advise on what to do Hardware: Windows 8 Pro with Media Center, Apple MacBook Pro 9,1 15 inch Mid-2012 (non retina)

• Configure Windows Routes for VPN

  I have a Virtual PC/VMWare machine that runs Windows Server 2003. This virtual machine uses an IPSec VPN client program to connect to a remote network. I configured the virtual machine to have 2 NICs: NAT - to be used by the VPN Client to access the remote network Host only - to be able to access the virtual machine from the host The reason I have this setup is because I want to be able to access some remote network from the host machine. I could've installed the VPN client on the host machine, but the host runs Windows 7 and the client doesn't support it. The problem: although the virtual machine is normally reachable (ping + http access), as soon as the VPN client is started, neither of the NIC addresses are reachable anymore. I'm wondering if it is a routing problem that needs to be addressed? How do routing/VPN client connection affect the ability of the server to respond to client requests from the host?
