• C#, WinForms: Which view type for periodically updated list?

  I'm having an application, that periodically polls a web service (about every 10 seconds). In my application logic I'm having a List<Message> holding the messages. All messages have an id, and might be received out of order. Therefore the class implements the Comparable Interface. What WinForm control would fit to be regurarly updated (with the items in order). I plan to hold the last 500 messages. Should I sort the list and then update the whole form? Or is data binding approriate (concerning performance)?

• WPF ListView.CurrentChanged too fast for binding

  My case: MVVM ListView+Details(custom UserControl) List bound to MV.Items (IsSynchronizedWithCurrent=true) Details bound to MV.Items.Current MV.Items.Count == 100 about 0.2sec to read details (lazy mode) When I hold the down arrow on the list, very strange things happen: list items order change current changes in the random order CPU usage drastically increments and eventually all hangs. I've read some post that one should start the timer or run handler in the background, but I am not able to do that, since all the binding WPF does for me. Is there some way to instruct the binding in my DetailsControl, to wait a while before accepting CurrentItem? Or should I just resign from the clean solution and write custom code in my MV to handle that?

• Fast partial sorting algorithm

  I'm looking for a fast way to do a partial sort of 81 numbers - Ideally I'm looking to extract the lowest 16 values (its not necessary for the 16 to be in the absolutely correct order). The target for this is dedicated hardware in an FPGA - so this slightly complicated matters as I want the area of the resultant implementation as small as possible. I looked at and implemented the odd-even merge sort algorithm, but I'm ideally looking for anything that might be more efficient for my needs (trade algorithm implementation size for a partial sort giving lowest 16, not necessarily in order as opposed to a full sort) Any suggestions would be very welcome Many thanks

  Hello I have this in my .htaccess file, in the site root: Options -Indexes <directory ../.*> Deny from all </directory> <Files .htaccess> order allow,deny deny from all </Files> <Files index.php> Order allow,deny allow from all </Files> What I'm trying to achieve is to block folder and file access to anything that isn't called index.php, regardless of which directory is accessed. I have the folder part working perfectly and the deny from all rule is working as well - but my attempt to allow access to index.php is failing. Basically could someone tell me how to get it working?

• TooManyRowsAffectedException with encrypted triggers

  I'm using nHibernate to update 2 columns in a table that has 3 encrypted triggers on it. The triggers are not owned by me and I can not make changes to them, so unfortunately I can't SET NOCOUNT ON inside of them. Is there another way to get around the TooManyRowsAffectedException that is thrown on commit? Update 1 So far only way I've gotten around the issue is to step around the .Save routine with var query = session.CreateSQLQuery("update Orders set Notes = :Notes, Status = :Status where OrderId = :Order"); query.SetString("Notes", orderHeader.Notes); query.SetString("Status", orderHeader.OrderStatus); query.SetInt32("Order", orderHeader.OrderHeaderId); query.ExecuteUpdate(); It feels dirty and is not easily to extend, but it doesn't crater.

• Getting a screenshot of a page using .NET - Need help with code

  I'm writing a specialized crawler and parser for internal use and I require the ability to take a screenshot of a web page in order to check what colours are being used throughout. The program will take in around ten web addresses and will save them as a bitmap image, from there I plan to use LockBits in order to create a list of the five most used colours within the image. To my knowledge it's the easiest way to get the colours used within a web page but if there is an easier way to do it please chime in with your suggestions. Anyway, I was going to use this program until I saw the price tag. I'm also fairly new to C#, having only used it for a few months. Can anyone provide me with a solution to my problem of taking a screenshot of a web page in order to extract the colour scheme? EDIT: Sorry for not getting back to this sooner, but I've been busy with some other things. Anyway, the code seems to work well, but the problem I am having right now is that I am running it within a form, and naturally with Application.Run() being called I cannot run two instances of the same form at once. It recommended Form.showDialog() but that broke everything. • What is a typical scenario for and end-user reports design?

  Hello! I'm wondering what would be the typical scenario for using an end-user report designer. What I'm thinking of is to have a base report with all the columns that I can have, also with a basic view of the report (formatting, order of columns, etc.) and then let the user to change that format and order, take out or add (from the available columns) data to it, etc. Is that a common way to address what is called end-user designer for reports or I'm off track? I know it depends on the user (if it's someone that can handle SQL or not for example), but is it common to have a scenario where the user can build everthing from the sql query to the formatting? • django-haystack ordering - How do I handle this?

  Hi there, I'm using django-haystack for a search page on my site. I'm basically done, but not quite happy with the ordering and not quite sure how haystack decides how to order everything. I know I can over-ride the SearchQuerySet by using order_by but that over-rides it entirely. Let's say I want to force the search to order by in stock (BooleanField), so that the products that are in stock show up on top, but then do everything else as it normally would. How do I do that? I tried doing order_by('-in_stock', 'content') figure content was what it used by default but it produces very different results from if I just leave it to do its own ordering. • Lenovo V570 CPU fan running constantly, CPU core 1 running over 90%!

  I have seen that a lot of people are having this same issue. I am running a Lenovo V570 i5 4 core, 6 gigs of ram, and am running 11.10 Onieric Ocelot. On my system monitor graph it shows CPU at 20%, when I open the monitor it shows core #1 at around 90%, the other cores fluctuate at or below 5-12% if even. Now this seems like a really terrible balance of power between the cores, especially with so much stress on one core only, when these things are designed to work with 4 cores and not at such high temps. My current readings say 64 degrees Celsius, this does not seem normal for any cpu, and I am seriously considering, working on my windows7 partition until I see a real solution to this issue or upgrading to 12.04 right away when it comes out... I have seen countless things saying it has something to do with the Kernel, the kernel on mine is the same as when I upgraded, I really do not like messing with it, as when I had 11.04, I did tinker with it due to the freeze issues I was having, and that just made worse issues. I like this version 11.10 and would like to keep it for a while, but without the fear that my core is going to fry! So any help would be much appreciated! I did try changing a couple things in ACPI, and restarting this did not help, and here I am. I tried one thing prior to that that was listed under a different computer brand, but it would not do a make on the file. I really need help with this, I rely on this computer for a lot of things, and love this OS! Please help so I do not need to resort to my Microsoft partition! PLEASE! • Needing forward declaration in Ruby

  Hi, I am trying to write a Ruby script in one file. I would like to know if it is possible to write the "main" function in the beginning, having the other functions that are used by main, defined after it. In other words, I would like to call a not yet defined function, so that they do not depends on definition order. Just changing the order is not possible because it gives an "undefined method" error. In C/C++ we use forward declarations... is there something similar in Ruby or another solution to this?

  I understand that is not possible to have applications with multiple entry points under Windows. I have a MFC application and I added code for making it running as a service (main() entry point and other required stuff) but it looks that Windows will always run the WinMain() from MFC instead of my main. The question is how can I disable the WinMain() from MFC in order to be able to run my own main(). Probably the same problem would apply if you want to run the same application as a console application. What do I have to change in project properties in order to build it as a console application (main instead of WinMain)? Is commenting my CWinApp the only solution?

• Stopping Windows Mobile 6.5 tab reordering

  I have a C++ Visual Studio 2008 Windows Mobile 6.5 application that uses a tab control. I've noticed that depending on how careful you are with the stylus, when using the tab control you can accidentally re-order the tabs. It's difficult to do deliberately, but it's very easy to do when you're not trying. I assume this is a new "feature" of Windows Mobile 6.5 as it doesn't happen in Windows Mobile 6.1 with the same code. Is there a window style or something I can set that will lock the tab order such that people don't accidentally re-arrange them? Also, is there an MSDN page that describes this behavior and how it is supposed to work? I've looked, but have come up empty. Thanks, PaulH

• Discussion: Working TDD in a Scrum context

  Hi all, When I work TDD I tend to start out with the big picture and create the tests that should succeed in order for the overall assignment to be completed - it then kicks off a number of supporting classes/methods/tests as I 'dig in'. If my assignment has been planned out in detail, I would then open one task, and in order to solve it, open another and then another. Only when the overall tests are succeeding can I close the original task, which means that at any given time, I would have a number of open tasks. I find that this approach conflict somewhat with the scrum approach where, ideally, I should be able to take and close a task within a day's work - and never have more than one task open at a time. I'm looking for input about how you manage this in your project - references to articles are also very welcome, I'm sure this has been debated thoroughly somewhere...   How can we Implement Bisect Python functionality in PHP Implement function bisect_left($arr, $item); as a pure-PHP routine to do a binary-bisection search for the position at which to insert $item into $list, maintaining the sort order therein. Assumptions: Assume that $arr is already sorted by whatever comparisons would be yielded by the stock PHP < operator, and that it's indexed on ints. The function should return an int, representing the index within the array at which $item would be inserted to maintain the order of the array. The returned index should be below any elements in $arr equal to $item, i.e., the insertion index should be "to the left" of anything equal to $item. Search routine should not be linear! That is, it should honor the name, and should attempt to find it by iteratively bisecting the list and comparing only around the midpoint.

• Storing credit card details

  I have a business requirement that forces me to store a customer's full credit card details (number, name, expiry date, CVV2) for a short period of time. Rationale: If a customer calls to order a product and their credit card is declined on the spot you are likely to lose the sale. If you take their details, thank them for the transaction and then find that the card is declined, you can phone them back and they are more likely to find another way of paying for the product. If the credit card is accepted you clear the details from the order. I cannot change this. The existing system stores the credit card details in clear text, and in the new system I am building to replace this I am clearly not going to replicate this! My question, then, is how I can securely store a credit card for a short period of time. I obviously want some kind of encryption, but what's the best way to do this? Environment: C#, WinForms, SQL-Server.

• Sort by an object's type

  Hi all, I have code that statically registers (type, handler_function) pairs at module load time, resulting in a dict like this: HANDLERS = { str: HandleStr, int: HandleInt, ParentClass: HandleCustomParent, ChildClass: HandleCustomChild } def HandleObject(obj): for data_type in sorted(HANDLERS.keys(), ???): if isinstance(obj, data_type): HANDLERS[data_type](obj) Where ChildClass inherits from ParentClass. The problem is that, since its a dict, the order isn't defined - but how do I introspect type objects to figure out a sort key? The resulting order should be child classes follow by super classes (most specific types first). E.g. str comes before basestring, and ChildClass comes before ParentClass. If types are unrelated, it doesn't matter where they go relative to each other.

• IntPtr in 32 Bit OS, UInt64 in 64 bit OS

  I'm trying to do an interop to a C++ structure from C#. The structure ( in C# wrapper) is something like this [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential, CharSet = CharSet.Auto)] public struct SENSE4_CONTEXT { public System.IntPtr dwIndex; //or UInt64, depending on platform. } The underlying C++ structure is a bit abnormal. In 32 bit OS, dwIndex must be IntPtr in order for the interop to work, but in 64 bit OS, it must be UInt64 in order for the interop to work. Any idea how to modify the above structure to make it work on both 32 and 64 bit OS?

  I need regexp to match string build from several groups (A is any letter, 9 is any digit): group 1 regex [A-Z]{1,2}[0-9]? A A9 AA9 group 2 regex [A-Z]{1,3}[0-9]? A AA AAA AAA9 group 3 regex [A-Z]{2,3}[0-9]?[A-Z]? AAA AA9 AA9A group 4 regex [0-9]{1,2}[A-Z]{1,2}[0-9]? 9A 9AA 9A9 99A9 Not each group must be present but there must be all in correct order - I mean (digit is group number): 1 12 123 1234 So if there is present group 3 there must me all preceding groups present also. As there are four groups (can be more), so alternative like ^[A-Z]{1,2}[0-9]{1}|[A-Z]{1,2}[0-9]{1}\s{1}[A-Z]{1}[0-9]?$ is not the best option as it would be complicated and difficult to maintain. Is there any solution with groups or something? The order of groups is important.

• How can I pass a raw System.Drawing.Image to an .ashx?

  I am developing an application that stores images as Base64 strings in xml files. I also want to allow the user to crop the image before saving it to the file, preferably all in memory without having to save a temp file, and then delete it afterwards. In order to display the newly uploaded image, I need to create a HTTP handler that I can bind the asp:Image to. The only examples for doing this online require passing the .ashx an ID and then pulling the image from a DB or other data store. Is it possible to somehow pass the raw data to the .ashx in order to get back the image? Thanks, Mike

• Get #part in URL with PHP/Symfony

  Hi, I'm working with Symfony 1.2. I've a view with a list of objects. I can order them, filter them by category, or moving to the next page (there is pagination). Everything is done with AJAX, so I don't have to load all the page again. What I want to achieve is to have http://urltopage#page=1&order=title&cats=1,2 for example; so the new page is saved in the browser history, and he can paste it to another web. I haven't found a way to get the #part. I know that's only for the browser but I can't believe I can't get through PHP. I'm sure there is a simple solution I'm missing... thanks a lot!

• SQL Server: export data via SQL query?

  I have FK and PK all over my db and table data needs to be specified in a certain order or else I get FK/PK insertion errors. I'm tired of executing the wizard again and again to transfer data one table at a time. In the SQL Server export data wizard there is an option to "Write a query to specify the data to transfer". I'd like to write the query myself and specify the correct order. Will this solve my problem? How do I do this? Can you provide a sample query (or link to one) The databases are on two different servers - SQL Server 2008 on each ; The database names & permissions are the same ; each table name & col is the same ; I need Identity Insert for each table.
