  • Web design process with CSS - during or after?

    - by SyaZ
Which is the better practice? Add CSS during web designing you can see the result (or close) as early as possible and make required changes. You also know how many divs or spans you might need (eg to make curved cross-browser hover background). But as you add more and more components to the page sometimes things get hack-ish as you need to patch here and there to get the exact design required. Add CSS after finishing page design you can see the page overall structure as it is well, without styles. You get to see how accessible your site is, and modify it right away if it's not good enough (unlike the former case where you may break multiple CSS rules). Plus after you finished it, you only need to spend most of the time to alter only the CSS file, which is good to get the momentum going. Granted I have never tried the latter approach, but am seriously considering it for my next project if I can see convincing reasons -- or if it's no good at all. Thanks.

  • Submit Data to a datatable from a View MVC

    - by user54197
    I have a view that I would like to populate data when the next button is clicked. It is 3 Views which will send data on every next button. How do I do this? Below is code I just made up, but should give an idea of what I am looking for. Page 1: <table> <tr> <td><b>Name:</b></td> <td colspan="2"><input id="txtName" type="text" /></td> </tr> </table> <input type="submit" value="Next" /> Page 2: <table> <tr> <td><b>Address:</b></td> <td colspan="2"><input id="txtAddress" type="text" /></td> </tr> </table> <input type="submit" value="Next" /> Page 3: <table> <tr> <td><b>Phone:</b></td> <td colspan="2"><input id="txtPhone" type="text" /></td> </tr> </table> <input type="submit" value="Next" />

    - by shinjuo
I have a page that I made that is going to be used for retrieving shipping rates from UPS by entering the weight and zip. Everything works fine but what I want to add to it is the ability for the user to choose something on a form and have it update the value in a different form box. I think this is done with javascript. Any suggestions will help.

  • Skip HTML escape in custom label_tag helper in Rail 3

    - by tricote
Hi, I have this nice class ErrorFormBuilder that allows me to add the error description near the corresponding field in the form view : class ErrorFormBuilder < ActionView::Helpers::FormBuilder #Adds error message directly inline to a form label #Accepts all the options normall passed to form.label as well as: # :hide_errors - true if you don't want errors displayed on this label # :additional_text - Will add additional text after the error message or after the label if no errors def label(method, text = nil, options = {}) #Check to see if text for this label has been supplied and humanize the field name if not. text = text || method.to_s.humanize #Get a reference to the model object object = @template.instance_variable_get("@#{@object_name}") #Make sure we have an object and we're not told to hide errors for this label unless object.nil? || options[:hide_errors] #Check if there are any errors for this field in the model errors = object.errors.on(method.to_sym) if errors #Generate the label using the text as well as the error message wrapped in a span with error class text += " <br/><span class=\"error\">#{errors.is_a?(Array) ? errors.first : errors}</span>" end end #Add any additional text that might be needed on the label text += " #{options[:additional_text]}" if options[:additional_text] #Finally hand off to super to deal with the display of the label super(method, text, options) end end But the HTML : text += " <br/><span class=\"error\">#{errors.is_a?(Array) ? errors.first : errors}</span>" is escaped by default in the view... I tried to add the {:escape = false} option : super(method, text, options.merge({:escape => false})) without success Is there any way to bypass this behavior ? Thanks

  • HttpUtility.HtmlEncode doesn't encode everything

    - by Anthony
I am interacting with a web server using a desktop client program in C# and .Net 3.5. I am using Fiddler to see what traffic the web browser sends, and emulate that. Sadly this server is old, and is a bit confused about the notions of charsets and utf-8. Mostly it uses Latin-1. When I enter data into the Web browser containing "special" chars, like "O p ? 8 ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?" fiddler show me that they are being transmitted as follows from browser to server: "&#9800; &#9801; &#9802; &#9803; &#9804; &#9805; &#9806; &#9807; &#9808; &#9809; &#9810; &#9811; " But for my client, HttpUtility.HtmlEncode does not convert these characters, it leaves them as is. What do I need to call to convert "?" to &#9800; and so on?

  • Populate table with JQuery

    - by Talkar
    I need to populate some data into a table. The data i have is something i get in response from my ASP.NET MVC site, when i make a json post call there. Yet i can't seem to find a way to actually display the data i get back in response. Here is my code so far. Any help would be much appreciated: $(document).ready(function () { var uName = '<%= Session["UserName"].ToString()%>'; var pWord = '<%= Session["Password"].ToString()%>'; var data = { UserName:uName,Password:pWord}; $.ajax( { type: 'POST', url: "http://someurl.goes.here/", crossDomain: true, data: data, dataType: 'jsonp', success: function(myData) { $.each(myData, function (index, element) { $("#ClassTable").append('<tr><td> ' + element[0] + ' </td> <td> ' + element[1] + '</td></tr>'); }) } }); }); myData looks like this: [Object { IsActive = True, ObjectId=1, ObjectString="someString", etc... etc... } ]

  • Very different font sizes across browsers

    - by Yang
Chrome/WebKit and Firefox have different rendering engines which render fonts differently, in particular with differing dimensions. This isn't too surprising, but what's surprising is the magnitude of some of the differences. I can always tweak individual elements on a page to be more similar, but that's tedious, to say the least. I've been searching for more systematic solutions, but many resources (e.g. SO answers) simply say "use a reset package." While I'm sure this fixes a bunch of other things like padding and spacing, it doesn't seem to make any difference for font dimensions. For instance, if I take the reset package from http://html5reset.org/, I can show pretty big differences (note the layout dimensions shown in the inspectors). [The images below are actually higher res than shown/resized in this answer.] <h1 style="font-size:64px; background-color: #eee;">Article Header</h1> With Helvetica, Chrome is has the shorter height instead. <h1 style="font-size:64px; background-color: #eee; font-family: Helvetica">Article Header</h1> Using a different font, Chrome again renders a much taller font, but additionally the letter spacing goes haywire (probably due to the boldification of the font): <style> @font-face { font-family: "MyriadProRegular"; src: url("fonts/myriadpro-regular-webfont.eot"); src: local("?"), url("fonts/myriadpro-regular-webfont.woff") format("woff"), url("fonts/myriadpro-regular-webfont.ttf") format("truetype"), url("fonts/myriadpro-regular-webfont.svg#webfonteknRmz0m") format("svg"); font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; } @font-face { font-family: "MyriadProLight"; src: url("fonts/myriadpro-light-webfont.eot"); src: local("?"), url("fonts/myriadpro-light-webfont.woff") format("woff"), url("fonts/myriadpro-light-webfont.ttf") format("truetype"), url("fonts/myriadpro-light-webfont.svg#webfont2SBUkD9p") format("svg"); font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; } @font-face { font-family: "MyriadProSemibold"; src: url("fonts/myriadpro-semibold-webfont.eot"); src: local("?"), url("fonts/myriadpro-semibold-webfont.woff") format("woff"), url("fonts/myriadpro-semibold-webfont.ttf") format("truetype"), url("fonts/myriadpro-semibold-webfont.svg#webfontM3ufnW4Z") format("svg"); font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; } </style> ... <h1 style="font-size:64px; background-color: #eee; font-family: Helvetica">Article Header</h1> I've tried a few resets/normalize packages to no avail. I just wanted to confirm here that this is indeed a fact of life (even omitting the more glaring offenders like IE and mobile) and I'm not missing some super-awesome solution to this mess.

    - by schmoopy
Can someone show me how to get the .top & .left position of a div or span tag when one is not specified? ie: <span id='11a' style='top:55px;' onmouseover="GetPos(this);">stuff</span> <span id='12a' onmouseover="GetPos(this);">stuff</span> In the above, if i do: document.getElementById('11a').style.top The the value of 55px is returned. However if i try that for span '12a', then nothing gets returned. I have a bunch of div/spans on a page that i cannot specify the top/left properties for, but i need to display a div directly under that element. Thanks for lookin :-)

  • xPath Groupings how?

    - by David
OK So, I'm learning/using xpath for a basic application thats effectively ripping data off another website. I need to gain the knowledge of each persons Countryy/Suburb/area. In some instances you can get Australia/Victoria/melborne for instance. Others may just be Australia/Melbourne. Or even just Melbourne OR just AUSTRALIA. who knows. So I'm current able to view the below code and rip all of the information with the string xpath search:@" //table/tr/td/tabke/tr/td/font/a, this returns every entry, but what I really want is to group each lot separately. I hope someone out there on planet earth knows what I just tried to explain... and can help... Good day! <font face="arial" size="2"> <strong>Location:</strong> <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Australia" target="mapblast" style="text-decoration:none">Australia</a>, <a href='http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Australia%20Victoria'target="mapblast" style='text-decoration:none'>Victoria</a>, <a href='http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Australia%20Melbourne%20Victoria'target="mapblast" style='text-decoration:none'>Melbourne</a> </font> </td> </tr>

  • Web UI for showing like/dislike community comments side-by-side

    - by Justin Grant
We want to add a comments/reviews feature to our website's plugin gallery, so users can not only vote up or down a particular plugin, but also leave an optional short comment about what they liked or didn't like about it. I'm looking for inspiration, ideally a good implementation elsewhere on the web which isn't annoying to end users, isn't impossibly complex to develop, and which enables users to see both good and bad comments side-by-side, like this: Like: 57 votes Dislike: 8 votes --------------------------------- -------------------------------- "great plugin, saved me hours..." "hard to install" "works well on MacOS and Ubuntu" "Broken on Windows Vista with UAC enabled" "integrates well with version 3.2" More... More... Anyone know a site which does something like this?

EDIT: Photoshop says it is an RGB 8-bit image.

  • how to number t-rows ,when table generated using nested forloop in django templates

    - by stackover
Hi, This part is from views.py results=[(A,[stuObj1,stuObj2,stuObj3]),(B,[stuObj4,stuObj5,stuObj6]),(C,[stuObj7,stuObj8])] for tup in results: total = tot+len(tup[1]) render_to_response(url,{'results':res , 'total':str(tot),}) this is template code: <th class="name">Name</th> <th class="id">Student ID</th> <th class="grade">Grade</th> {% for tup in results %} {% for student in tup|last %} {% with forloop.parentloop.counter as parentid%} {% with forloop.counter as centerid%} <tbody class="results-body"> <tr> <td>{{student.fname|lower|capfirst}} {{student.lname|lower|capfirst}}</td> <td>{{student.id}}</td> <td>{{tup|first}}</td> </tr> {% endfor %} {% endfor %} Now the problems am having are 1. numbering the rows. Here my problem is am not sure if i can do things like total=total-1 in the templates to get the numbered rows like <td>{{total}}</td> 2.applying css to tr:ever or odd. Whats happening in this case is everytime the loop is running the odd/even ordering is lost. these seems related problems. Any ideas would be great :)

  • Form loop db insertion + javascript altering

    - by MrStatic
    I basically need to check if there is an easier way to do this before I rewrite all the code. I have a fairly large form that I have each input named with []'s on the end so I can loop through via php for easy insertion. <input type="hidden" name="currentdate[]" value="<?php echo date('mdY'); ?>"> <td><input style="width: 50px" type="text" name="jackname[]" /></td> <td><input style="width: 20px" type="text" name="jackkey[]" /></td> <td><input style="width: 50px" type="text" name="jackbeg[]" /></td> <td><input style="width: 50px" type="text" name="jackend[]" /></td> <td><input style="width: 50px" type="text" name="jackbegveh" /></td> <td><input style="width: 50px" type="text" name="jackbegmon[]" /></td> <td><input style="width: 50px" type="text" name="jackendveh" /></td> <td><input style="width: 50px" type="text" name="jackendmon[]" /></td> <td><input style="width: 50px" type="text" name="jacktx" disabled /></td> There are quite a few more fields but you get the idea. I then use foreach ($_POST['jackname'] as $row=>$name) { $jackname = $name; $date = $_POST['currentdate'][$row]; $jackkey = $_POST['jackkey'][$row]; $jackbeg = $_POST['jackbeg'][$row]; $jackend = $_POST['jackend'][$row]; $jackbegveh = $_POST['jackbegveh'][$row]; $jackbegmon = $_POST['jackbegmon'][$row]; $jackendveh = $_POST['jackendveh'][$row]; $jackendmon = $_POST['jackendmon'][$row]; $jacktx = $_POST['jacktx'][$row]; if ($jacktx == '') { $jacktx = '0'; } if (empty($jackkey)) { echo 'Skipped empty! <br />'; } else { mysql_query("INSERT INTO `ticket_counts_jackson` VALUES('', '" . $date . "', '" . $jackname . "', '" . $jackkey . "', '" . $jackbeg . "', '" . $jackend . "', '" . $jackbegveh . "', '" . $jackbegmon . "', '" . $jackendveh . "', '" . $jackendmon . "', '" . $jacktx . "')", $mysql_link) or die(mysql_error()); echo 'Added the info the db! <br />'; } } I use the above to loop through the form and add it to the database. Now for my main question. I also want to add in some javascript to do a little math. Basically ($jackendveh - $jackbegveh) - ($jackendmon - $jackbegmon) and have that displayed in jacktx. Currently the only way I know of adding in the math calculations is to rename each input to a unique name and then rewrite my insert from 1 insert to 8 inserts.

  • Center aligned form with equal width labels

    - by James Goodwin
I have a very simple web form which consists of labels and input fields, however I can not seem to find a way of aligning the form in the center of the page and for the labels to have an equal width so that they appear neatly next to each other, one under the other. The structure of my page is basically: <body> <div class="form"> <form method="post"> <fieldset> <label>Mobile:</label><input type="text" name="msisdn"><br/> <label>Code:</label><input type="text" name="code"><br/> <br/> <input type="image" src="submit-button.gif" alt="Submit"> <br/> <input type="checkbox" name="ts_and_cs"><label> Accept Terms and Conditions</label> <br/><br/> </fieldset> </form> </div> </body> Usually I would fix this by doing float:left on the label fields and setting a width on the labels, however for this I need the labels and input fields to be centered on the page. Also I am not able to set the width of the page (or any containing divs) as the page will be displayed on mobile devices with different screen sizes. Any suggestions as to how best style the form? Thanks

  • Is there an application I can show a client the speed of their site via differring internet connecti

    - by Slimpickens
I have a new client with an old website using massive amounts of tables and inline styles. Some page weigh over 3MB due to huge backgrounds and other large images. I suggested they at least compress the files to speed up the site but they're convinced it's fast. Since they have 13Mbit connection at the office everything seems fast. I'm looking for a tweak, program or web app capable of loading pages at varying speeds so they understand how it might load for slower DSL or (gasp) dialup users. Thanks for any help!
